Teaching Culture In Textbooks For Spanish For Business Published In Spain, Maida Watson
Global Business Languages
During the last two decades, studies of how the teaching of culture is related to second language learning have grown enormously. At the same time an interest in Languages for Specific Purposes in both Europe and the USA has resulted in a study of how business languages are taught. But few people have examined how texts published in different countries to teach business languages present different facets of the target culture. The purpose of this article is to study how texts for Spanish for Business published in Spain during the last three decades have taught culture. These texts reflect a …

The Six-Tier Communication Gap For Multinational Corporations After Mergers And Acquisitions: Lessons Learned From The Case Of Duracell And Nanfu, May Hongmei Gao
Global Business Languages
The importance of cultural factors as antecedents of post-acquisition integration has been recognized in previous research. Nevertheless, there are not many case studies on the post–merger and acquisition (M&A) integration process of USA-based multinational corporations (MNCs) acquiring Chinese companies. This article summarizes lessons in communication learned from the integration process between Duracell and Nanfu, the two battery giants from the US and China. In 2003, the Gillette Company, who owned Duracell, acquired Nanfu. In 2005, Gillette was acquired by Procter and Gamble (P&G), and the management of Nanfu remains to be coordinated by Duracell. This case embodies the interplay of …

Incorporating New Areas Of Business Into Business Language Studies: Social Media Marketing, Annie Abbott
Global Business Languages
Despite the fact that social media marketing has established itself as a vital area of marketing for businesses both large and small, global and local, Business Language Studies (BLS) has yet to turn its full attention to this business activity that requires a keen sense of language, culture, and business. As BLS continues to build and articulate its theoretical and methodological grounds, social media marketing provides rich research and teaching possibilities. However, social media is a dynamic, constantly changing environment that can seem intimidating to BLS educators who are unfamiliar with its platforms and uses. This article serves as an …

Graduate Courses In Languages For Specific Purposes: Needs, Challenges, And Models, Diana M. Ruggiero
Graduate Courses In Languages For Specific Purposes: Needs, Challenges, And Models, Diana M. Ruggiero
Global Business Languages
The 2007 MLA assessment of the state of foreign languages in higher education correctly identifies the need for restructuring both program curricula and governance in order to meet current student needs. In its recommendations for doing so, however, the committee inadvertently defines the goals and objectives of graduate foreign language programs as narrowly focused on the production of future academics. The current reality of the academic job market, institutional demands, and of the global economy calls for a critical reassessment of this assumption. This article considers the potential benefits of, and challenges to, broadening existing graduate curricula, specifically through the …

Sustainability Pedagogies For The Business Language Classroom, Margaret Gonglewski, Anna H. Helm
Global Business Languages
Heightened urgency about the question of the earth’s survival has generated increased attention to how to teach sustainability across the curriculum. The business language course, positioned at the nexus of business and the humanities, is the ideal environment for bringing to bear perspectives from multiple disciplines on questions around sustainability. This article examines the notion of “sustainability pedagogies” framed within three key aspects of sustainability education noted in the scholarship: interdisciplinarity, transformative learning, and experiential learning. In each of these areas, we provide an example of how the sustainability pedagogies can be implemented in business language courses.
Reception And Variations Of Classical Narratology In Chinese Scholarship, Biwu Shang
Reception And Variations Of Classical Narratology In Chinese Scholarship, Biwu Shang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Reception and Variations of Classical Narratology in Chinese Scholarship" Biwu Shang discusses the field's impact starting in the 1970s to today. Shang's survey includes translations of Western frameworks including introductions published during three waves (the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s respectively). While Shang posits that Chinese narratology owes a debt to English-language Western scholarship, as it stands in the last decades this is counterbalanced with the development of Chinese narratology and Western scholarship started to show interest in Chinese scholarship: indeed, the more exchanges between Chinese scholarship and that of the West develop, the more beneficial the dialogue …

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Throughout the past century, the Missouri River has been highly modified which has negatively affected the native fish community. Previous research quantified the reduction of several native Cyprinidae species and made several recommendations to aid in recovery. However, these recommendations were not implemented. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to assess the current population trends of eight native cyprinid species and develop the current management objectives. Over 335,000 fish were collected from the Missouri River along Nebraska’s eastern border with mini-fyke nets and otter trawls from 2003 to 2012. Target Cyprinidae species consisted of less than five percent (n …
Turning Waste Into Resources In Haiti, Alexis Barnes
Turning Waste Into Resources In Haiti, Alexis Barnes
Capstones
Sanitation infrastructure in Haiti is an ongoing problem- one that only exacerbated a massive cholera epidemic brought to the country by Nepalese United Nations peacekeeping troops. SOIL is an NGO that works in alternative sanitation- using "urine-diverting dry toilets" to turn waste into a fertile resource. In my capstone, I explore the potential for alternative sanitation in Haiti, how it works and what internal and external political and economic factors lead to the current state of water and sanitation infrastructure in the country.
Mcdonald's Or Mesquite: Struggles On The Salt River Pima Reservation, Stefani Kim
Mcdonald's Or Mesquite: Struggles On The Salt River Pima Reservation, Stefani Kim
Capstones
The Salt River Pima Indians, prior to colonization, had a strong tradition of harvesting and food sovereignity. As the tribe adapted to a more Westernized diet which consisted mainly of processed food rations, the rate of diabetes began to skyrocket on the reservation and, at one point, the tribe had one of the highest per capita diabetes rates in the world. This year, the tribe's cultural resources department will resurrect a 16-year-old community garden program originally funded by a USDA/Habitat for Humanity grant as a way to help combat health problems related to a poor diet such as diabetes and …

Dynamics Of Suspended Sediment Flux On The Rivers Bandon And Owenabue, Ireland, S. T. Harrington, Joseph R. Harrington
Publications
Monitoring, analysis and modelling of suspended sediment transport in riverine systems has received much attention in recent decades. Quantitive analysis techniques have been applied to allow river basin managers to assess suspended sediment transport and its importance in transporting a range of pollutants including excess metals and nutrients, which negatively impact on aquatic systems. In this paper, an analysis of the suspended sediment fl ux (SSF) dynamics is presented for the small and medium sized catchments of the River Owenabue and the River Bandon, respectively. The results contribute to the fi lling of a research gap in an Irish context …

Native Plant Recovery In Study Plots After Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare) Control On Santa Cruz Island, Paula J. Power, Thomas Stanley, Clark Cowan, James R. Roberts
Native Plant Recovery In Study Plots After Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare) Control On Santa Cruz Island, Paula J. Power, Thomas Stanley, Clark Cowan, James R. Roberts
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the California Channel Islands and supports a diverse and unique flora which includes 9 federally listed species. Sheep, cattle, and pigs, introduced to the island in the mid-1800s, disturbed the soil, browsed native vegetation, and facilitated the spread of exotic invasive plants. Recent removal of introduced herbivores on the island led to the release of invasive fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), which expanded to become the dominant vegetation in some areas and has impeded the recovery of some native plant communities. In 2007, Channel Islands National Park initiated a program to control fennel …

Argentine Ant Management In Conservation Areas: Results Of A Pilot Study, Christina L. Boser, Cause Hanna, Kathryn R. Faulkner, Coleen Cory, John M. Randall, Scott A. Morrison
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) have invaded many areas of conservation concern, including half of the California Channel Islands. On Santa Cruz Island, the species has invaded approximately 2% of the island, and the infestations are expanding. Argentine ants displace many other invertebrates, and their expansion throughout the island could lead to the extirpation of native invertebrate species and the disruption of key ecological processes (e.g., plant-pollinator interactions and seed dispersal). We describe a treatment protocol to manage or eliminate Argentine ants on Santa Cruz Island developed by The Nature Conservancy and the National Park Service, in collaboration with …
Ecosystem Restoration On Santa Catalina Island: A Review Of Potential Approaches And The Promise Of Bottom-Up Invader Management, Denise A. Knapp
Ecosystem Restoration On Santa Catalina Island: A Review Of Potential Approaches And The Promise Of Bottom-Up Invader Management, Denise A. Knapp
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Restoring large, complex landscapes can be challenging, especially given that some threats to native diversity and ecological function cannot be wholly eliminated. Santa Catalina Island, California, provides a valuable case study because its challenges include a variety of ecosystem threats, legal restrictions, and cultural attachments, as well as a vocal resident human population that often does not agree with conservation actions. Catalina Island has been highly modified by numerous invasive species, fragmentation and erosion from roads, altered hydrology from dams, and increased fire frequency. In this paper, I build on a previously published review of resources and threats and discuss …
A Program To Eradicate Twenty-Four Nonnative Invasive Plant Species From Santa Cruz Island, Coleen Cory, John J. Knapp
A Program To Eradicate Twenty-Four Nonnative Invasive Plant Species From Santa Cruz Island, Coleen Cory, John J. Knapp
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Santa Cruz Island, California, has been free of nonnative vertebrates since 2007, but nonnative invasive plants remain one of the most significant threats to the recovery of the island’s native ecosystems. Just over one-fourth of the island’s flora is comprised of nonnative, naturalized plant species. In 2007, an island-wide invasive plant survey indicated that several species were candidates for eradication based on factors such as their distribution, abundance, invasiveness, and known or projected harmful impacts on the native biota. In 2008, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Native Range, Inc., initiated a program to eliminate 15 invasive plant species from TNC’s …

Laysan Albatross On Guadalupe Island, México: Current Status And Conservation Actions, Julio C. Hernández-Montoya, Luciana Luna-Mendoza, Alfonso Aguirre-Muñoz, Federico Méndez-Sánchez, Maria Maria Félix-Lizárraga, J. M. Barredo-Barberena
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Guadalupe Island, off the Baja California peninsula, México, hosts the most important growing Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) breeding colony in the eastern Pacific. Since this seabird’s first arrival in 1983, it has been affected by predation from feral cats (Felis catus), present on Guadalupe since the late 19th century. Heavy predation events have been recorded on the island, so we initiated a feral cat control campaign in 2003 and began collecting baseline information for developing an eradication plan. At the same time, we conducted seasonal monitoring of Laysan Albatross reproductive success in order to assess the …
Reintroduction Of Historically Extirpated Taxa On The California Channel Islands, Scott A. Morrison, Kevin A. Parker, Paul W. Collins, W. Chris Funk, T. Scott Sillett
Reintroduction Of Historically Extirpated Taxa On The California Channel Islands, Scott A. Morrison, Kevin A. Parker, Paul W. Collins, W. Chris Funk, T. Scott Sillett
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Most invasive alien vertebrate populations on the Channel Islands of California have been eradicated over the past 30 years. Unfortunately, removal of these introduced herbivores or predators came too late for some native flora and fauna, and numerous populations are now extinct. Here, we describe a systematic approach to reintroducing extirpated native taxa as a means for rebuilding natural communities and enhancing the resiliency of island ecosystems. Reintroduction efforts typically focus on a single species or site. In contrast, we propose that if reintroduction is a shared conservation goal of managers across the islands, the associated planning, implementation, and monitoring …
Importance Of Early Life Stage Limitations On Recovering Populations Of Leptosyne Gigantea, San Miguel Island, California, Catherin A. Schwemm
Importance Of Early Life Stage Limitations On Recovering Populations Of Leptosyne Gigantea, San Miguel Island, California, Catherin A. Schwemm
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Plant communities dominated by Leptosyne gigantea (tickseed, formerly giant coreopsis) are distributed widely across the California Islands and provide critical habitat for understory plants and vertebrates, especially in landscapes where trees are absent. Leptosyne gigantea populations were severely impacted by nonnative herbivores and by grazing and ranching practices during the last century. Although these impacts have been absent from most of the islands for over 2 decades, extensive spatial heterogeneity exists both within and across the islands in relation to population growth. Many sites support very dense stands of L. gigantea that established postgrazing; whereas others, particularly on Santa Barbara …
