Microtopography-Dominated Discontinuous Overland Flow Modeling And Hydrologic Connectivity Analysis, Jun Yang Jan 2014

Microtopography-Dominated Discontinuous Overland Flow Modeling And Hydrologic Connectivity Analysis, Jun Yang

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Surface microtopography affects a series of complex and dynamic hydrologic and environmental processes that are associated with both surface and subsurface systems, such as overland flow generation, infiltration, soil erosion, and sediment transport. Due to the influence of surface depressions, overland flow essentially features a series of progressive puddle-to-puddle (P2P) filling, spilling, merging, and splitting processes; and hydrologic systems often exhibit threshold behaviors in hydrologic connectivity and the associated overland flow generation process. It is inherently difficult to realistically simulate the discontinuous overland flow on irregular topographic surfaces and quantify the spatio-temporal variations in dynamic behaviors of topography-dominated hydrologic systems. …

Modeling Of Temperature Impacts On Fixed Film Microbial Growth And Nitrification Kinetics, Jacob Strombeck Jan 2014

Modeling Of Temperature Impacts On Fixed Film Microbial Growth And Nitrification Kinetics, Jacob Strombeck

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Monod-type kinetic models, used in simulating microbial growth in biological treatment systems, suggest significant decreases of substrate utilization at lower temperatures. However, it is documented that performance of fixed film treatment systems are not hindered with declining temperatures. Previous studies at the Moorhead, MN, Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) showed significant impacts of temperature on biofilm growth in its moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), and studies noted that at low temperatures more biomass was present. Previously, a series of kinetic bench-scale batch tests was performed to measure ammonium removal in the full-scale system. As part of this research, a diffusion based …

Ph Responsive Capsules Containing Composite Coatings For Corrosion Inhibition In Metal Alloys, Kiran Bhat Kashi Jan 2014

Ph Responsive Capsules Containing Composite Coatings For Corrosion Inhibition In Metal Alloys, Kiran Bhat Kashi

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Hexavalent chromes have be used as effective corrosion inhibitors due to their high inhibitor efficiency and low cost for the protection of several metal alloys. However, owing to their toxicity federal legislations restrict the use and distribution of these highly toxic materials. The need for an environmentally friendly yet effective alternative to the chrome based corrosion inhibitors has led to the investigation of rare earth metals as potential candidates. Cerium is one such rare earth metal that has received considerable attention as an alternative to hexavalent chromes. However, the high water solubility of some of the cerium salts makes it …

Synthesis And Characterization Of 2,3-Difunctionalized Thieno[3,4-B]Pyrazine-Based Terthienyls Structure-Function Relationships And Side Chain Tunability, Ryan Schwiderski

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The ability to tune the physical, electronic, and optical properties of polymer precursors has garnered a great deal of interest in the conjugated organic materials field. The Rasmussen group has previously demonstrated the ability to produce tunable, low band gap materials through the generation of new families of functionalized thieno[3,4-b]pyrazines (TPs). The scope of conventional TPs has been limited to either 2,3-dialkyl or diaryl analogues due to the standard synthetic approach of 3,4-diaminothiophene condensation with available stable α-diones. As a consequence, this limited the ability to effectively tune the electronic and optical properties of the TP unit. In an effort …

Requirement Eliciting Process: A Method To Analyze Requirements Through Concept Maps, Marie Nilukshi Fonseka

Computer Science

Conceptual modeling involves the understanding and communication between system analysts and end-users. Concept maps (CM) are informal, semantic, node-link conceptual graphs used to represent knowledge in a variety of applications. Concept maps capture knowledge about the concepts and concept relationships in a domain, using a two-dimensional visually-based representation. In this paper we examine hoe concept maps created for student requirements are different from that of a domain expert. This will aid us as analysts, to understand how well we interpret requirements in known and unknown domains using two requirements eliciting methods problem description and use case method. The results show …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The cores of the fourteen Advanced Gas-cooled nuclear Reactors (AGRs) within the UK comprise Gilsocarbon graphite, a manufactured material surrounded predominantly by CO2 at high pressure and temperature to provide heat exchange. The intense ionising radiation within the reactors causes radiolytic oxidation, and the resulting mass loss is a primary factor in determining reactor lifetime. The void structure of the porous Gilsocarbon graphite affects the permeability and diffusion of the carbon dioxide, and the sites of oxidation. To model this void structure, the porosities and densities of ten virgin Gilsocarbon graphite samples have been measured by powder and helium pycnometry. …

Investigating The Use Of Model-Based Method For Improving The Quality Of Natural Language Requirements: A Controlled Empirical Study, Munmun Gupta

Computer Science

Requirement engineering is a critical phase in software development that describes the customer needs and specifications for the software. Requirements are gathered through various sources and documented for a software product to be developed, written in Natural Language (NL). NL requirements are fault prone because they can be interpreted in different ways due its inherent imprecision, ambiguity, and vagueness. To address these problems, model-based requirements verification method called NLtoSTD (State Transition Diagram) is proposed. This paper evaluates the ability of NLtoSTD method in detecting faults when used on NL requirements and to improve its cognitive friendliness to the stakeholders. Motivated …
