Relating structure and function of neuronal circuits is a challenging problem. It requires demonstrating how dynamical patterns of spiking activity lead to functions like cognitive behaviour and identifying the neurons and connections that lead to appropriate activity of a circuit. We apply a "developmental approach" to define the connectome of a simple nervous system, where connections between neurons are not prescribed but appear as a result of neuron growth. A gradient based mathematical model of two-dimensional axon growth from rows of undifferentiated neurons is derived for the different types of neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord of young tadpoles …

Potential consequences of climate change on crop production can be studied using mechanistic crop simulation models. While a broad variety of maize simulation models exist, it is not known whether different models diverge on grain yield responses to changes in climatic factors, or whether they agree in their general trends related to phenology, growth, and yield. With the goal of analyzing the sensitivity of simulated yields to changes in temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2], we present the largest maize crop model intercomparison to date, including 23 different models. These models were evaluated for four locations representing a wide …

Human pathogens can internalize food crops through root and surface uptake and persist inside crop plants. The goal of the study was to elucidate the global modulation of bacteria and plant protein expression after Salmonella internalizes lettuce. A quantitative proteomic approach was used to analyse the protein expression of Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis and lettuce cultivar Green Salad Bowl 24 h after infiltrating S. Infantis into lettuce leaves. Among the 50 differentially expressed proteins identified by comparing internalized S. Infantis against S. Infantis grown in Luria Broth, proteins involved in glycolysis were down-regulated, while one protein involved in ascorbate …

Corn (Zea mays L.) stover was identified as an important feedstock for cellulosic bioenergy production because of the extensive area upon which the crop is already grown. This report summarizes 239 site-years of field research examining effects of zero, moderate, and high stover removal rates at 36 sites in seven different states. Grain and stover yields from all sites as well as N, P, and K removal from 28 sites are summarized for nine longitude and six latitude bands, two tillage practices (conventional vs no tillage), two stoverharvest methods (machine vs calculated), and two crop rotations {continuous corn (maize) …

Constructing A Block And Fence Growing Bench For Use With A Capillary Mat Irrigation System For Greenhouse Plant Production, Stacy A. Adams, Ellen T. Paparozzi
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Plant health and productivity of greenhouse grown plants are improved when grown on raised benches where they can have optimal environmental conditions. Often seasonal plant growers set plants directly on the greenhouse floor which is less than optimum due to temperature stratification, cold drafts, poor air movement, and wet conditions. This publication describes how to construct simple and economical growing benches and a irrigation system useful for the specialty crop grower.

Do Cover Crops Increase Or Decrease Nitrous Oxide Emissions? A Meta-Analysis, Andrea D. Basche, F. E. Miguez, T. C. Kaspar, M. J. Castellano
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
There are many environmental benefits to incorporating cover crops into crop rotations, such as their potential to decrease soil erosion, reduce nitrate (NO3) leaching, and increase soil organic matter. Some of these benefits impact other agroecosystem processes, such as greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, there is not a consensus in the literature regarding the effect of cover crops on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Compared to site-specific studies, meta-analysis can provide a more general investigation into these effects. Twenty-six peer-reviewed articles including 106 observations of cover crop effects on N2O emissions from the soil surface …

Agriculture in the twenty-first century faces unprecedented challenges from increasing climate variability to growing demands on natural resources to globalizing economic markets. These emerging agricultural issues, spanning both human and natural dimensions, are uniquely formulated, exceedingly complex, and difficult to address within existing disciplinary domains (Eigenbrode et al. 2007; Reganold et al. 2011; Foley et al. 2005; Hansen et al. 2013). Therefore, the next generation of scientists working on these issues must not only be highly trained within a disciplinary context but must also have the capacity to collaborate with others to solve systems-level problems.

Metathesis Reaction Of Ethylene And 2-Butene On Molybdenum-Based Catalysts, Benjamas Netiworaruksa
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This dissertation studies and develops the supported molybdenum catalyst for metathesis reaction of ethylene and 2-butene to produce propylene. It was found that the major factor affecting the catalytic performance for metathesis reaction is the catalyst support. From this study, it was firstly revealed that the suitable support for molybdenum-based catalyst is the mixed support of alumina and zeolite. The catalyst containing alumina support prepared from aluminium nitrate physically mixed with HBeta support could provide high selectivity of propylene. The optimum ratio of the composite support of alumina and zeolite was 3:1. However, the most optimum support obtaining propylene selectivity …

Incremental Concentration Of Black Carbon Aerosol From Road Traffic In Inner Bangkok, Panwadee Suwattiga
Applied Environmental Research
Commonly referred to as soot, black carbon (BC) is a primary aerosol emitted from incomplete combustion of organic materials such as fossil fuels, biofuels and biomass. BC aerosolis a dominant anthropogenic solar radiation absorber, absorbing approximately 1 million times more radiation per unit of mass than CO2. Recent research has found that BC is the second largest anthropogenic contributor to global warming. BC aerosol is not only a short-lived climate forcer (SLCF) but also an air pollutant that adversely affects human health. Emission sources of BC aerosol are mainly residential, industrial, transportation related and/or and open burning sources. In a …

Impact Of Carbon Nanotubes On Bacterial Viability: Indicators, Mitigation, And Role Of Phage Shock Proteins, Tu Thi Anh Le
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
The toxicity of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to a model bacterium, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 was investigated. Estimates of E. coli viability following treatment with SWCNTs were similar using four viability methods: plate count, galactosidase enzyme assay, LIVE/DEAD® Baclight™ assay, and RNA quantificatio. Pristine SWCNTs, carboxylic functionalized SWCNTs (SWCNT-COOHs) and hydroxyl functionalized SWCNTs (SWCNTOHs) were used to assess toxicity. Regardless of the length of SWCNTs, the toxicity was in the following order: SWCNT-OHs < SWCNTs < SWCNT-COOHs. While there was no difference in the impact of short and long SWCNT-OHs, the long pristine SWCNTs and SWCNT-COOHs were more toxic than the corresponding short SWCNTs. The viability of cells exposed to all three types of SWCNTs was greater with increasing cell density. Alterations of cell morphology ware observed after the cells were exposed to SWCNTs. Entrapment of cells in alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a means to limit the antibacterial effect of SWCNTs was examined. The results showed that cell entrapment could reduce the bactericidal effects of SWCNTs. Calcium alginate and PVA provided equivalent cell protection against SWCNTs. The toxicity of SWCNTs for entrapped cells depended on the length and concentrations of SWCNTs, the presence of functional groups, and the initial cell density. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses were used to study the molecular mechanisms by which SWCNTs induce bactericidal activity. Expression levels of genes and proteins, particularly phage shock proteins (Psp) that are known to react under membrane stress such as iv pspA, pspB, and pspC, changed following cell exposure to SWCNTs. Expression of the Psp operon was affected by the length, concentration, and functionalization of SWCNTs. Overall, this study provided multiple methods that can be used to quantify the toxicity of SWCNTs for bacterial cells. A way to mitigate the bactericidal effects of SWCNTs was identified and verified. Gene and protein expression, particularly expression of the Psp operon, were reported in cells stressed by exposure to SWCNTs.

Conceptual modeling involves the understanding and communication between system analysts and end-users. Concept maps (CM) are informal, semantic, node-link conceptual graphs used to represent knowledge in a variety of applications. Concept maps capture knowledge about the concepts and concept relationships in a domain, using a two-dimensional visually-based representation. In this paper we examine hoe concept maps created for student requirements are different from that of a domain expert. This will aid us as analysts, to understand how well we interpret requirements in known and unknown domains using two requirements eliciting methods problem description and use case method. The results show …

Data mining techniques have an important implication in social and biological network analysis, were we're interested in finding related complexes and communities. A modern paradigm for solving this problem involves finding densely connected interacting members such as bound proteins in a PPI. It's important to also consider the properties of members. In the context of social networks, we might be interested in finding groups of friends of similar age and sharing common interests. This information can lead to better targeting for advertising and suggestions. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm that can be applied to mining entity- relationship networks. …

Current research on network analysis; such as community detection, pattern mining and many other graph mining application mostly focus on large social or biological networks. Such experiments may find interesting patterns that helps us to understand the unknown relationship within the network. Sometimes the size of the input networks are so big that it needs an efficient algorithm to overcome the time and space complexities. In this paper we modify an existing algorithm that finds the maximal patterns from a set of input networks. Maximal patterns are those patterns that are not part of any frequent patterns. We introduce a …

A brain-computer interface (BCI) enables a paralyzed user to interact with an external device through brain signals. A BCI measures identi es patterns within these measured signals, translating such patterns into commands. The P300 is a pattern of a scalp potentials elicited by a luminance increment of an attended target rather than a non-target character of an alphanumeric matrix. The Row-Column Paradigm (RCP) can utilize responses to series of illuminations of matrix target and non-target characters to spell out alphanumeric strings of P300-eliciting target characters, yet this popular RCP speller faces three challenges. The adjacent problem concerns the proximity of …

The shift from traditional software development for personal computers to mobile applications on iOS comes with new challenges and considerations. Software development teams similar to my work group built expertise in delivering quality products for the Mac OS platform. Although the core development and testing processes largely remain the same on iOS devices (iPhones and iPads), a major concern is around an application’s power consumption. The engineering challenge is to build innovative applications that do not drain the battery too quickly. Power consumption testing on iOS is an important area to validate and optimize to deliver quality applications to mobile …

One can arrive at as many as three or more airports on the way to their destination with two layovers during the trip, KFAR to KMSP to KSLC to KPSP for example. How can an airport design be more than just a vehicle for aviation, but serve as a desirable location to be, rather than just one more step along the path. It can have such a lack of circumstance that you only remember menial inconveniences, rather than a positive experience. With effort, can an airport be made to evoke a similar set of circumstance as a national landmark when …
