Analysis Of Lacustrine Deposits Of Custer Lookout And Lefor Butte, Stark County, North Dakota, Andrea Dove Jan 2014

Analysis Of Lacustrine Deposits Of Custer Lookout And Lefor Butte, Stark County, North Dakota, Andrea Dove

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Stark County, North Dakota has several limestone-capped buttes. These units are commonly considered to be of lacustrine origin, although no specific paleoenvironmental analysis has been conducted. The purpose of this research was to determine if petrographic or other laboratory evidence supports a lacustrine origin for these units. Methods included collecting limestone caprock samples from two buttes in question, Custer Lookout and Lefor Butte. Thin sections were made to help determine paleosetting of the limestone units through petrographic analysis and fossil allochems. Fossil ostracods and a charaphyte were critical in determining the lacustrine origin of the limestone beds.

Annual Erosion Of A Small Watershed In The North Dakota Badlands; Usa, Erin Hoeft Jan 2014

Annual Erosion Of A Small Watershed In The North Dakota Badlands; Usa, Erin Hoeft

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Understanding the process of erosion is important and necessary to guide not only land management today, but serve as a basis for future practices. The seasonal rate of sediment transport was monitored in a small drainage basin near the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota. Soil traps, erosion pins, painted pebble lines, and aluminum markers were placed throughout the valley to monitor seasonal sediment transport. Once the observation period ended, the amount of sediment leaving the drainage basin was calculated to be 81.4 m3. It is not certain that all of this sediment traveled directly …

Wisco Oil Field Special Waste Landfill : Final Design Report ; For Williams County, North Dakota Section 26 T. 154 N.R. 104 W, Jacob Friesz, Tanner Bryantt, Luke Hanson, Emily Delaney Jan 2014

Wisco Oil Field Special Waste Landfill : Final Design Report ; For Williams County, North Dakota Section 26 T. 154 N.R. 104 W, Jacob Friesz, Tanner Bryantt, Luke Hanson, Emily Delaney

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The increasing amount of special waste generated from drilling activity in western North Dakota has created the need for a local special waste landfill for the region. A quarter section of land has been selected for landfill use 20 miles west of Williston on ND 2, (sec.26, T. 154 N, R. 104 W.), Williams County. WISCO Oil Co. recognized this site as an appropriate destination to deposit the special waste. ND 2 dividing the site into Northern and Southern divisions leaves the smaller Northern division to be used for processing waste and maintenance buildings, while the larger 7 4-acre Southern …

Wisco Special Waste Landfill : Site Location Northwest 1/4 Of Section 26, Township 154 North, Range 104 West, Williams County, North Dakota, Ryan Rasanen, Allison Smrekar, Paul Jahraus Jan 2014

Wisco Special Waste Landfill : Site Location Northwest 1/4 Of Section 26, Township 154 North, Range 104 West, Williams County, North Dakota, Ryan Rasanen, Allison Smrekar, Paul Jahraus

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The WISCO Special Waste Landfill was developed to meet the need for a waste disposal site for the growing oilfield industry in western North Dakota. The design report was prepared on behalf of the North Dakota Department of Health - Division of Waste Management to demonstrate that the site meets the geological and hydrogeological requirements set forth in the North Dakota Century Code. The report details the site analysis utilized in design, the assumptions made in regards to contamination prevention, and the execution of the landfill design. The WISCO Special Waste Landfill was designed to accept special and small volume …

Acting White Among Black College Students: A Phenomenological Study Of Social Constructions Of Race, Evette L. Allen Jan 2014

Acting White Among Black College Students: A Phenomenological Study Of Social Constructions Of Race, Evette L. Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was a qualitative examination of Black college students' experiences with the Acting White label. In conducting this study, two gaps in literature were addressed: (1) the lack of literature on Black college students and the acting white label, and (2) lack of attention to a US racial history and current structures which allow a label such as "acting white" to exist. Thus, the purpose of this study was to call attention to the experiences of Black college students as it relates to the acting white label. Additionally, the study calls attention to social constructions that allow the acting …

We model the observed J(++) mesonic mass spectrum in terms of energies for tightly knotted and linked chromoelectric QCD flux tubes. The data is fit with one- and two-parameter models. We predict a possible new state at approximately 1190 MeV and a plethora of new states above 1690 MeV.

Allosteric Regulation Of The Hsp90 Dynamics And Stability By Client Recruiter Cochaperones: Protein Structure Network Modeling, Kristin Blacklock, Gennady M. Verkhivker Jan 2014

Allosteric Regulation Of The Hsp90 Dynamics And Stability By Client Recruiter Cochaperones: Protein Structure Network Modeling, Kristin Blacklock, Gennady M. Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The fundamental role of the Hsp90 chaperone in supporting functional activity of diverse protein clients is anchored by specific cochaperones. A family of immune sensing client proteins is delivered to the Hsp90 system with the aid of cochaperones Sgt1 and Rar1 that act cooperatively with Hsp90 to form allosterically regulated dynamic complexes. In this work, functional dynamics and protein structure network modeling are combined to dissect molecular mechanisms of Hsp90 regulation by the client recruiter cochaperones. Dynamic signatures of the Hsp90-cochaperone complexes are manifested in differential modulation of the conformational mobility in the Hsp90 lid motif. Consistent with the experiments, …

Quantum weak measurements with states both pre- and post-selected offer a window into a hitherto neglected sector of quantum mechanics. A class of such systems involves time dependent evolution with transitions possible. In this paper we explore two very simple systems in this class. The first is a toy model representing the decay of an excited atom. The second is the tunneling of a particle through a barrier. The post-selection criteria are chosen as follows: at the final time, the atom remains in its initial excited state for the first example and the particle remains behind the barrier for the …

Assessing Optimal Set Of Implemental Physical Parameterization Schemes In A Multi-Physics Land Surface Model Using Genetic Algorithm, S. Hong, X. Yu, S. K. Park, Y.-S. Choi, Boksoon Myoung

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Optimization of land surface models has been challenging due to the model complexity and uncertainty. In this study, we performed scheme-based model optimizations by designing a framework for coupling "the micro-genetic algorithm" (micro-GA) and "the Noah land surface model with multiple physics options" (Noah-MP). Micro-GA controls the scheme selections among eight different land surface parameterization categories, each containing 2–4 schemes, in Noah-MP in order to extract the optimal scheme combination that achieves the best skill score. This coupling framework was successfully applied to the optimizations of evapotranspiration and runoff simulations in terms of surface water balance over the Han River …
