In his article, The Constitutional Right Not to Kill, Professor Mark L. Rienzi persuasively asserts that the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments protect individuals from being forced to participate in government-authorized killings. Drawing from several strands of diverse legal doctrines, including military conscientious objections, capital punishment, physician-assisted death, abortion, and self-defense, he demonstrates the various ways in which the state and federal governments have shielded American citizens from being required to kill against their will.

Professor Hockett finds that Professor Baradaran's helpful new article is, in effect, largely about the institutional consequences of abandoning the once-dominant view of finance as the means by which to secure individual initiative and productive autonomy in our polity. Professor Hockett argues that a tight link exists between how we configure and conduct our enterprise and how we configure and conduct our finance. He argues further that we cannot fully describe what an optimally inclusive and sustainable banking and broader financial system would look like without also identifying an optimally participatory productive culture and attendant mode of capital accumulation.

Environmental law is riddled with symbolisms of protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the environment in which we live. Sometimes these symbols are simply inherent characteristics of the legislation or policy as their very creation symbolizes or represents the politico’s stance on an issue. Other times, the legislation or policy is used primarily as a symbol, without ever addressing the issue or effectuating change, sometimes referred to as symbolic politics. Despite radical differences in their political commentary, Amiri Baraka and V.S. Naipaul’s literary careers have obsessively centered on the divided Self of the colonized artist. Esther Jackson argues that Baraka’s “search for form” becomes “symbolic of a continuing effort to mediate between warring factions within the perceiving mind” (38). Similarly, many critics have interpreted Naipaul’s grave manifestos as the outpourings of a writer disenchanted with his own past and national identity. The practice of evaluating situations with the Riverside Situational Q-Sort (RSQ:Wagerman & Funder, 2009) is relatively new. The present study aimed to investigate the theoretical framework supporting the RSQ with regards to the potential confounds of emotional state and the use of Likert-type ratings. Data were collected from a sample of Florida Atlantic University students (N = 206). Participants were primed for either a positive or negative mood state and asked to evaluate a situation with the RSQ in either the Q-Sort or Likert-type response format. One of the major causes of structural repairs worldwide is the corrosion of reinforced concrete structures, such as residential buildings and piers, which are exposed to harsh marine environments. This investigation aims to provide experimental evidence of the fire resistance of corroded high strength reinforced concrete. For this, 14 reinforced concrete beams of three different concrete mix designs (different strengths) were prepared along with concrete cylinders for compression strength testing (ASTM C39). A self-discrepancy is a cognitive incompatibility between a conception of the desired self and the perception of the actual self (Higgins, 1987; Rogers & Dymond, 1954). The purpose of this dissertation is to gain a better understanding of the effects of gender self-discrepancies on the personal and social adjustment of preadolescent children. I propose that gender-related stereotypes and self-appraisals can be examined within a self-discrepancy framework. Preadolescent children (N=195) completed a variety of self- and peer-report questionnaires in the fall and spring of the school year. In general relativity, angular momentum of the gravitational field in some volume bounded by an axially symmetric sphere is well-defined as a boundary integral. The definition relies on the symmetry generating vector field, a Killing field, of the boundary. When no such symmetry exists, one defines angular momentum using an approximate Killing field. Contained in the literature are various approximations that capture certain properties of metric preserving vector fields. We explore the continuity of an angular momentum definition that employs an approximate Killing field that is an eigenvector of a particular second-order differential operator. The ubiquitin ligase Highwire is responsible for cell-autonomously promoting synapse formation in the Drosophila Giant Fiber system. highwire mutants show defects in synaptic function and extra branching at the axon terminal, corresponding to transient branching that occur in the course of giant synapse formation during metamorphosis. The MAP kinase pathway, including Wallenda and JNK/Basket, plus the transcription factor Jun, act to suppress synaptic function and axon pruning in a dosage sensitive manner, suggesting different molecular mechanisms downstream of the MAP kinase pathway govern function and pruning. My research measured completion and retention of procedural learning tasks, and declarative and procedural components of engagement in indoor and outdoor settings. Instructor-assisted Self-Directed Learning and Non-instructor-assisted Self-Directed Learning were implemented in the context of an Experiential Learning approach. Experimental covariates included student-specific variables such as background and experience, and environment-specific variables such as temperature, and humidity. AIC model averaging was used to identify the best-fitting mixed GLM models. The Arcadia Formation is a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic rock unit that existed as a shallow carbonate ramp to platform environment during the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene Epoch. It can be divided into two distinct, informal sections based on lithological properties: the upper Arcadia Formation and lower Arcadia Formation. The sections are part of a major, third-order sequence that can be further divided into four higher-frequency, lower magnitude sequences: ARS1, ARS2, ARS3, and ARS4. The sequence boundary separating ARS2 and ARS3 represents a drastic change in the depositional regime from a high-energy, inner ramp/platform to a lower-energy, deep outer ramp environment. …

British colonization of the Bahamian island of Eleuthera began in the mid-­‐ seventeenth century with the arrival of Puritans who came from Bermuda, seeking refuge from religious persecution. Funded by a group of British investors called the Eleutherian Adventurers, This first group of settlers shipwrecked and took refuge in a cave, now known as Preacher’s Cave, where they adapted to the island’s maritime tropical environment. Archaeological excavations conducted at Preacher’s Cave recovered a large quantity of faunal remains. This thesis presents an analysis of these materials and compares the resultant findings to existing historical records pertaining to this settlement. Whereas …

This quantitative, non-experimental study was conducted to investigate the link between school principal influence actions, climate, culture, and school performance. Additionally, this study sought to determine if the influence of these variables or the relationship among them is altered by individual and/or institutional characteristics. The first phase of the study was conducted to determine whether or not the Customer Survey aligned to distinct dimensions. Two factors were identified: Staff Attitudes and Student Disruptions. The second part used regression to examine the relationships among four constructs and test the seven hypotheses.

This phenomenological, mixed-method study compared and contrasted virtual K- 12 school leadership with traditional face-to-face leadership. All 106 participants served for a minimum of two years in each setting. The study was conducted in two phases in order to reveal consensus and dissensus points of view. Conceptually, a postmodern framework was used to deliberately create spaces for new leadership ideas to emerge through surveys and interviews. The data included teachers and leaders from charter, district, and state virtual K-12 schools.
