Exploring The Factors That Influence And Motivate Female Students To Enroll And Persist In Collegiate Stem Degree Programs: A Mixed Methods Study, Rosemary L. Edzie
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Nationally, the need for an increase in interest, enrollment, and degrees awarded from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree programs continues to suffer. While students are enrolling in collegiate STEM degree programs, it is not occurring at a rate that meets the workforce demand. In addition to the concern that there is not a sufficient amount of collegiate STEM majors, there is a concern over too few females enrolling and persisting in collegiate STEM degree programs.
This mixed methods sequential exploratory research study considered the factors that influence and motivate undergraduate female students to enroll and persist in collegiate …

The Number Of Scholarly Documents On The Public Web, Madian Khabsa, C. Lee Giles
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The number of scholarly documents available on the web is estimated using capture/recapture methods by studying the coverage of two major academic search engines: Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Search. Our estimates show that at least 114 million English-language scholarly documents are accessible on the web, of which Google Scholar has nearly 100 million. Of these, we estimate that at least 27 million (24%) are freely available since they do not require a subscription or payment of any kind. In addition, at a finer scale, we also estimate the number of scholarly documents on the web for fifteen fields: Agricultural …

Landstat Evaluation Of Trumpter Swan (Cygnus Buccinator) Historical Nesting Sites In Yellowstone National Park, Laura E. Cockrell
University Presentation Showcase Event
Trumpeter Swan Rocky Mountain Population Tri-state Flock nests in the Greater Yellowstone region. Lack of high quality nesting habitat may be limiting growth of swans in the Tri-state Flock. The goal of this study was to use Landsat images to discern differences between historical nesting sites and evaluate current nesting sites within Yellowstone National Park. Satellite imagery allows flexible modeling and frequent coverage (16-18 days).
Therapy For B-Cell Lymphoma, Shruti Bhatt
Therapy For B-Cell Lymphoma, Shruti Bhatt
Open Access Dissertations
B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is the fifth most common cancer comprised of indolent and aggressive subtypes. Current therapeutic approaches result in short term survival, urging the development of better therapeutics. This dissertation involves design and evaluation of novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of B-cell lymphomas. Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), a rare form of aggressive NHL is caused by Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and/or Epstein-barr virus (EBV). An attractive option for treating PEL and other γ-herpesvirus induced cancers is targeting endogenous latent viruses with drugs that reactivate their lytic replication, thereby eradicating virally-infected reservoirs. Here we demonstrate that the combination …

Metabolic Rates Of Embryo And Growth Of Cobia (Rachycentron Canadum) And Mahi (Coryphaena Hippurus) Larvae Through Early Juvenile Stages, Sasa A. Miralao
Open Access Theses
Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) are top pelagic predators known for exhibiting rapid rates of development and growth throughout all life stages. Metabolic rates of embryonic stages of both species were studied to determine and compare the relationship between their metabolism and growth during early developmental stages. Metabolic rates (0.246 ± 0.035 μL 2/egg/hr) and weight-specific metabolic rates (2.562 ± 0.364 μL O2/mg dry weight/hr) of cobia embryos were not significantly different than metabolic rates (0.345 ± 0.05 μL O2/egg/hr) and weightspecific metabolic rates (2.199 ± 0.321 μL O2/mg dry weight/hr) of mahi embryos. Growth rates, length-weight relationship …

Green Infrastructure: A New Way Of Addressing Water Quality Issues Within A Growing Population., Marlin Martes
2014 Student Theses
Abstract
Beneath the great metropolis known as New York City, underlies an intricate system of water networks linking all of New York City’s five boroughs. In the same manner that veins function as vessels for the transportation of blood in the circulatory system, NYC’s water system interconnects all of the diverse communities found at multiple levels of society within the city. Regardless of origin or background, today all NYC residents and visitors share NYC’s tap water as a natural resource without fearing water scarcity tomorrow. However, as the estimated population in New York City is expected to rise above 9 …

The Unknown Puppet Masters Of The Modern Day American Diet And How To Cut To The Strings: A Look Into Parasites And Applied Kinesiology, Kirstie E. Carrizales
2014 Student Theses
Many Americans suffer recurring health problems that are accepted as "normal" in American society. From panic attacks to digestive problems, Americans have been getting sicker and sicker. At the same time, we find ourselves craving more processed foods and sweets. And how could we not, it's very hard to find food that has not been contaminated with processed parts. Western medicine provides multiple pills both prescription and non-prescription to "ease" our pains. But what is the underlying cause? And what is a real cure? To understand what is really going on with our bodies, we must scale ourselves down and …

A Lack Of Parasitic Reduction In The Obligate Parasitic Green Alga Helicosporidium, Jean-François Pombert, Nicolas Achille Blouin, Christopher E. Lane, Drion Boucias, Patrick J. Keeling
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The evolution of an obligate parasitic lifestyle is often associated with genomic reduction, in particular with the loss of functions associated with increasing host-dependence. This is evident in many parasites, but perhaps the most extreme transitions are from free-living autotrophic algae to obligate parasites. The best-known examples of this are the apicomplexans such as Plasmodium, which evolved from algae with red secondary plastids. However, an analogous transition also took place independently in the Helicosporidia, where an obligate parasite of animals with an intracellular infection mechanism evolved from algae with green primary plastids. We characterised the nuclear genome of Helicosporidium …

"Playthings Of A Historical Process": Prostitution In Spanish Society From The Restoration To The Civil War (1874-1939), Ann Kirkpatrick
2014 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
In her Reflective Essay, the author describes the moment she found her thesis while browsing the book shelves of the Claremont Colleges Library. She also acknowledges the valuable contributions of librarians, collections, interlibrary loan, and online resources to the success of her historical research on a subject where primary sources are difficult to find. This study explores the history of Spanish women in prostitution from the beginning of the Restoration in 1874 to the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939. That history intersects with a network of processes, including industrialization, urbanization, and political radicalization.

Gender-Neutral Pronouns: Inclusive, Subversive, Progressive, Elise Berendt
2014 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
The Reflective Essay describes a research journey that recognized the importance of information literacy, took advantage of “full access to any scholarly source I found through the databases,” and included an interview with a professor to provide personal perspective and expertise. The author focuses on issues of language and gender, specifically on pronoun usage. Her discussion considers the advantages of both traditional and gender-neutral pronouns, and she concludes that for the issue of pronoun preference to gain public attention it must become more than an activist cause, but also “a simple question of empathy and respect.”

Adam Smith: Providing Morality In A Free Market Economy, Kendra Tully
Adam Smith: Providing Morality In A Free Market Economy, Kendra Tully
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments (TMS) and Wealth of Nations (WN) appear to suffer from an irresolvable tension: TMS extols human sympathy whereas WN extols the consequences of self-interest. This paper takes a comprehensive approach, adding to scholarship on what has become known as the “Adam Smith Problem.” There are traditionally four different approaches to the “Adam Smith Problem” in the secondary literature; economic, political, moral, and “principles” approach. Through a textual analysis of TMS and WN that focuses on prudence, the nature of happiness and Smith’s rhetorical style, this inconsistency between his two texts disappears. The emphasis Smith …
Topological Complexity In Protein Structures, Gabriella Heller
Topological Complexity In Protein Structures, Gabriella Heller
2014 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
The Reflective Essay discusses the author’s research “at one of the many intersections of biochemistry and mathematics” and the value to that research of the Library’s staff and resources, both online and in hard copy. The author’s abstract of her thesis: For DNA molecules, topological complexity occurs exclusively as the result of knotting or linking of the polynucleotide backbone. By contrast, while a few knots and links have been found within the polypeptide backbones of some protein structures, non-planarity can also result from the connectivity between a polypeptide chain and attached metal structures. In this thesis, we survey the known …
