The Use Of Natural Products As Potential Anti-Pseudomonas Agents, Margaret B. Bell May 2014

The Use Of Natural Products As Potential Anti-Pseudomonas Agents, Margaret B. Bell

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Pseudomonas is a genus of gram-negative gammaproteobacteria with a large range of diversity. Because of its ability to grow at low temperature, Pseudomonas is a cause of food spoilage. This bacterium is also a very common nosocomial infection of hospital patients. In this study, we investigated the effects of different natural products on Pseudomonas. The products included a polysaccharide, two flavonoids tangeretin and nobiletin and their derivatives, 5’OH-tangeretin and 5’OH-nobiletin, black tea polyphenol – theaflavins (TFs), as well as an herb named Fallopia multiflora (Chinese Knotweed). P. fluorescens and P. aeruginosa were used as model organisms. Antimicrobial effects were …

The Role Of Otolin-1 In Cardiac Matrix Remodeling Following Myocardial Infarction, Courtney Anne Cates May 2014

The Role Of Otolin-1 In Cardiac Matrix Remodeling Following Myocardial Infarction, Courtney Anne Cates

Theses and Dissertations

Otolin-1 is a collagenous, C1q domain-containing extracellular matrix protein that has been identified and characterized in the inner ear. Recently, mass spectrometry analysis of left ventricular cardiac tissue detected a peptide of Otolin-1. Experimental analysis confirms Otolin-1 is an insoluble protein present in the left ventricular extracellular matrix whose expression decreases dramatically post-myocardial infarction beginning at day 5 post-MI. The protein is localized to the gap junctions of cardiac myocytes, and depletion of protein levels in the infarcted region of the left ventricle shows strong association with ventricular dimensions, observed via echocardiography.

Chemical Dental Plaque Control: Chlorhexidine Tooth Staining And Efficacy Of Common Whitening Procedures, Zoe Kiklis May 2014

Chemical Dental Plaque Control: Chlorhexidine Tooth Staining And Efficacy Of Common Whitening Procedures, Zoe Kiklis

Scripps Senior Theses

Chlorhexidine mouth rinses remove dental plaque from teeth, preventing dental caries, dental decay, and more serious systemic infections. Tooth discoloration due to extrinsic staining is the most prominent side effect of regular chlorhexidine use. Decreasing the concentration of chlorhexidine reduces staining area and severity. Staining can also be prevented and treated by tooth bleaching, a common cosmetic dental procedure that diminishes extrinsic staining by oxidizing chromagens adsorbed onto the tooth surface. In the proposed trial, common bleaching agents will be investigated for their efficacies in preventing chlorhexidine staining. Results of the trial could further the development of a chlorhexidine mouth …

Transient Spatiotemporal Chaos In A Diffusively And Synaptically Coupled Morris-Lecar Neuronal Network, Jacopo Lafranceschina May 2014

Transient Spatiotemporal Chaos In A Diffusively And Synaptically Coupled Morris-Lecar Neuronal Network, Jacopo Lafranceschina

Physics

Transient spatiotemporal chaos was reported in models for chemical reactions and in experiments for turbulence in shear flow. This study shows that transient spatiotemporal chaos also exists in a diffusively coupled Morris-Lecar (ML) neuronal network, with a collapse to either a global rest state or to a state of pulse propagation. Adding synaptic coupling to this network reduces the average lifetime of spatiotemporal chaos for small to intermediate coupling strengths and almost all numbers of synapses. For large coupling strengths, close to the threshold of excitation, the average lifetime increases beyond the value for only diffusive coupling, and the collapse …

Mapping Landscape Values And Forest Uses On The Tongass National Forest, Britta Schroeder May 2014

Mapping Landscape Values And Forest Uses On The Tongass National Forest, Britta Schroeder

Forest Sciences

Throughout the world, humans are often faced with the challenge of sustaining economic development while also promoting environmental stewardship. Such is true for the management history of the Tongass National Forest, where the U.S. Forest Service is transitioning away from harvesting old-growth and moving towards a more economically and environmentally sustainable approach. To measure the preferences of local community members affected by this transition, I conducted an interdisciplinary case study on the Wrangell Ranger District in Southeast Alaska. Community members from Wrangell mapped landscape values, acceptable and unacceptable forest uses. By assessing these landscape values and forest uses with respondents' …

Exploring Relationships Between Employees' Locus Of Control, Individualism And Collectivism Orientation, And Upward Dissent Message Strategies, Nadia Ingerslew Ingwar May 2014

Exploring Relationships Between Employees' Locus Of Control, Individualism And Collectivism Orientation, And Upward Dissent Message Strategies, Nadia Ingerslew Ingwar

Communication

This thesis investigated the relationships among individualism and collectivism, locus of control, and upward dissent. Students at a northwestern university were asked to complete a survey that measured the participants' levels of individualism and collectivism, locus of control orientation, and self-reported use of upward dissent message strategies. As predicted, internal locus of control and individualism were significant positive predictors of upward dissent. Unexpectedly, however, external locus of control and collectivism were also significant positive predictors of upward dissent. The research questions concerned the ability to predict the use of particular upward dissent message strategies. Use of each of the four …

Characterization, Composition And Source Identification Of Iraqi Aerosols, Jennifer Michelle Bell

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Soldiers that are deployed overseas are breathing ambient air containing concentrations of fine particulate matter known to cause adverse effects to human health. A study initiated in 2008 was designed to determine the concentrations and compositions of fine particulate matter in Baghdad, Iraq. This study used a Davis Rotating drum Unit for Monitoring (DRUM) aerosol impactor to continuously collect size (eight stages between 0.09 and 10 microns in aerodynamic diameter) and time (hour and a half resolution) resolved aerosol samples for mass concentration and elemental composition analyses. Results of this study show that fine particulate matter is associated with geogenic …

Species-Specific Time Series Analysis Of The Impact Of Alaska Policy Decisions On Salmon Harvest Yields, Christopher Wayne Benshoof May 2014

Species-Specific Time Series Analysis Of The Impact Of Alaska Policy Decisions On Salmon Harvest Yields, Christopher Wayne Benshoof

Economics

Throughout Alaska's history, the volume of the yearly salmon harvest has been an issue of much debate. As early as the 1940s and 1950s, decreasing salmon harvests caused territorial leaders to push for Alaska statehood such that the resources could be governed by the people that lived there. Since then, various policy shifts in both 1959 and 1.974 have been credited with supporting higher and higher salmon yields. This thesis incorporates historical data from 1914-2013 for salmon harvests of Chinook, sockeye, coho, pink, and chum salmon along with environmental factors associated with the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) index to investigate …

Effect Of Double Ovulation On Peripheral Concentrations Of Progesterone, Luteal Blood Perfusion And Hepatic Steroid Inactivating Enzymes, Benjamin Eugene Voelz May 2014

Effect Of Double Ovulation On Peripheral Concentrations Of Progesterone, Luteal Blood Perfusion And Hepatic Steroid Inactivating Enzymes, Benjamin Eugene Voelz

Theses and Dissertations

Progesterone is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy in cattle. Recent trends in decreased reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle have led researchers to believe that increased catabolism and decreased peripheral concentrations of progesterone are at fault. The objective of this study was to determine if the induction of an accessory corpus luteum (CL), via human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), alters blood perfusion of CL, peripheral concentrations of progesterone, or hepatic steroid inactivating enzymes. We hypothesized that the induction of an accessory CL would decrease blood perfusion of the CL, decrease peripheral concentrations of progesterone, and increase clearance of progesterone in the …

The third one examines the impact of environment on health. The abstracts of these three case studies are …

The History Of Land Use On Alaska's Kenai River And Its Implications For Sustaining Salmon, Susan F. Loshbaugh May 2014

The History Of Land Use On Alaska's Kenai River And Its Implications For Sustaining Salmon, Susan F. Loshbaugh

Natural Resources

The Kenai River Watershed (KRW), in south-central Alaska, is famous for its salmon. Urbanization along the lower river damages habitat and stresses these valuable fish. Are the river's salmon runs sustainable if recent land-use trends continue? I used interdisciplinary approaches from environmental history and landscape science plus technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS) to describe the watershed's land-use history from 1947 to 2010 and to link land use and watershed management to the sustainability of salmon runs. Although the area appears wild compared to many salmon-producing watersheds in other states, it has a long history of intense use and …

Assessment Of Contaminant Concentrations And Transport Pathways In Rural Alaska Communities' Solid Waste And Wastewater Sites, Edda Andrea Mutter May 2014

Assessment Of Contaminant Concentrations And Transport Pathways In Rural Alaska Communities' Solid Waste And Wastewater Sites, Edda Andrea Mutter

Engineering

Waste management practices currently employed in many rural Alaska communities are potentially contributing to human and environmental health impacts, and this problem may be exacerbated with the anticipated warming climate. For rural communities, factors that contribute to insufficient waste management practices include climate and environmental conditions, limitation of federal and state capital funding for construction, and the continuing financial burden associated with providing adequate operations and maintenance. As a response, federal regulatory exemptions are granted for construction and design of solid waste sites and limited state regulations are in place for wastewater discharge criteria. Due to the absence of proper …

Branching Into Rnai: Synthesis, Characterization And Biology Of Branch And Hyperbranch Sirnas, Anthony Muriithi Maina May 2014

Branching Into Rnai: Synthesis, Characterization And Biology Of Branch And Hyperbranch Sirnas, Anthony Muriithi Maina

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The cancer epidemic continues to afflict millions of humans world-wide each year and despite a renewed hope with the development of new and improved forms of therapy, a cure for cancer remains an elusive goal. This is partly related to the rise of resilient forms of tumors that have evolved with resistance towards conventional chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Moreover, these non-specific therapeutic regimens are highly toxic, leading to severe immunosuppressive effects which poisons the body and compromises the road towards remission. In an effort to mitigate these limitations, cancer-targeting approaches are currently experiencing a renaissance in the translation of new …

Recurrence Analysis Methods For The Classification Of Nonlinear Systems, Mark Graybill May 2014

Recurrence Analysis Methods For The Classification Of Nonlinear Systems, Mark Graybill

Physics

Recurrence is a common phenomenon in natural systems: A system enters and leaves a state, but after a given period of time, passes near that same state again. Many complex signals, such as weather cycles, heartbeats, or neuron firing patterns, all show recurrence. The recurrence plot (RP) displays all times j where a system returns near a state it has occupied at time i, giving rise to upward-sloping diagonal lines where a system follows a recurrent path, orthogonal lines when the system changes very slowly, or many disconnected points where a system's behavior is unpredictable. Investigation of the RP can …

Evaluation Of Management Practices To Mitigate Lodging For 'Cl151' Rice (Oryza Sativa L.), Jennifer Leann Corbin May 2014

Evaluation Of Management Practices To Mitigate Lodging For 'Cl151' Rice (Oryza Sativa L.), Jennifer Leann Corbin

Theses and Dissertations

‘CL151’ a Clearfield long-grain rice cultivar, was released in 2008, based upon excellent agronomic characteristics, including excellent yield and moderately resistant rating for lodging. Further experience has indicated it’s susceptibility to lodging. Lodging can reduce harvest efficiency, yield, and cause grain quality loss. The purpose of this research was to evaluate multiple management practices such as nitrogen rates and timings, seeding rate, trinexapac-ethyl application, potassium, and fungicide application to mitigate lodging for CL151. The results of this research indicate that N rate and application timing largely influence lodging incidence and grain yield. Fungicide application decreased, but did not eliminate lodging, …

Bahamian Quaternary Geology And The Global Carbon Budget, Erik Bond Larson May 2014

Bahamian Quaternary Geology And The Global Carbon Budget, Erik Bond Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Sea-level change during the Quaternary has had significant impacts on the geology of the Bahamas and the global carbon budget. During periods of low sea-level position conduit caves form in the Bahamas as a function of their respective water budgets. These conduit caves can then collapse and if this collapse reaches the surface a progradational collapse blue hole can be made. Upon subsequent sea-level rise these blue holes can become sediment inilled. Tidal pumping through these sedimentilled blue holes can result in the formation of whitings. Whitings are formed when the tidally pushed water warms and degasses CO2, driving the …

This paper looks at the concepts of the biomorphic and grotesque in art from the start of the 20th century to the present with a focus on painting and drawing. Included in the discussion of the grotesque throughout history are the works of Dadaist Otto Dix, painter Georg Baselitz, and feminist artists Judy Chicago, Hannah Wilke, and Ana Mendieta. Each used grotesque imagery to comment or react to a larger sociopolitical issue. Biomorphic artworks from the 20th century are mentioned as well, with specific examples of work by Lee Krasner, Willem DeKooning, and Hans Bellmer. These artists together …

Visual Analytics For Software Requirements Engineering, Sandeep Reddy Reddivari May 2014

Visual Analytics For Software Requirements Engineering, Sandeep Reddy Reddivari

Theses and Dissertations

For many software projects, keeping requirements on track needs an effective and efficient path from data to decision. Visual analytics creates such a path that enables the human to extract insights by interacting with the relevant information. While various requirements visualization techniques exist, few have produced end-to-end values to practitioners. In this dissertation, we advance the literature on visual requirements analytics by characterizing its key components and relationships in a framework. We follow the goal-question-metric paradigm to define the framework by teasing out five conceptual goals (user, data, model, visualization, and knowledge), their specific operationalizations, and their interconnections. The framework …
