Know Your Role: Black College Students, Racial Identity, And Performance, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart May 2014

Know Your Role: Black College Students, Racial Identity, And Performance, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart

Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications

This article is a report of a critical constructivist study of racial identity and performance among 13 Black, traditional-age students enrolled at three different colleges, two historically Black and one predominantly White. The study’s approach understood identity to be socially constructed and reliant upon community affirmation and validation. The findings highlight (1) the role of internal community pressure, (2) the ways in which racial performance dominated the students’ discussions of their racial identities, and (3) the intersection of internalized racism and sexism. The overarching conclusion points to the need for promoting acceptance of racial heterogeneity within communities of Black young …

Bioactivities Of Compounds From Elephantopus Scaber, An Ethnomedicinal Plant From Southwest China, Jianjun Wang, Ping Li, Basosai Li, Zhiyong Guo, Edward J. Kennelly, Chunlin Long

Publications and Research

Elephantopus scaber is an ethnomedicinal plant used by the Zhuang people in Southwest China to treat headaches, colds, diarrhea, hepatitis, and bronchitis. A new δ-truxinate derivative, ethyl, methyl 3,4,3′,4′-tetrahydroxy-δ-truxinate (1), was isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the entire plant, along with 4 known compounds. The antioxidant activity of these 5 compounds was determined by ABTS radical scavenging assay. Compound 1 was also tested for its cytotoxicity effect against HepG2 by MTT assay (IC50 = 60 μM), and its potential anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and antitumor bioactivities were predicted using target fishing method software.

Cytotoxicity Of Zno Nanoparticles Can Be Tailored By Modifying Their Surface Structure: A Green Chemistry Approach For Safer Nanomaterials, Alex Punnoose, Kelsey Dodge, John W. Rasmussen, Jordan Chess, Denise Wingett, Catherine Anders

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

ZnO nanoparticles (NP) are extensively used in numerous nanotechnology applications; however, they also happen to be one of the most toxic nanomaterials. This raises significant environmental and health concerns and calls for the need to develop new synthetic approaches to produce safer ZnO NP, while preserving their attractive optical, electronic, and structural properties. In this work, we demonstrate that the cytotoxicity of ZnO NP can be tailored by modifying their surface-bound chemical groups, while maintaining the core ZnO structure and related properties. Two equally sized (9.26 ± 0.11 nm) ZnO NP samples were synthesized from the same zinc acetate precursor …

Periodic Solutions Of F Xn+1 = Max {F(Xn),[(Xn-L)}, Where F Has Order 2, 3, Or 4, Kayrath Andy Vongphrachanh May 2014

Periodic Solutions Of F Xn+1 = Max {F(Xn),[(Xn-L)}, Where F Has Order 2, 3, Or 4, Kayrath Andy Vongphrachanh

Theses (Pre-2016)

The objective of our research is to analyze the periodic nature of solutions of the second order maxi-type difference equation: xn+1 = max{f(xn),[(xn-1)}, n = 0,1,2,3, ... (1) where f is a function of order p = 2, 3 or 4 and max is the maximum function; max{x, y} = the larger of x and y. Our conjecture that every order 2, 3, and 4 functions produced solutions that were eventually periodic was later confirmed. We also observed that the length of the eventual cycle depended on the order of the function. The value of the order p of f …

Cloning And Characterization Of Has-Mir-130b: A Regulator Of Pre-Mrna Splicing Factors, Imani Bethel May 2014

Cloning And Characterization Of Has-Mir-130b: A Regulator Of Pre-Mrna Splicing Factors, Imani Bethel

Theses (Pre-2016)

Alternative pre-rnRNA splicing contributes to protein diversity and protein expression of aberrantly spliced mRNA contributes to human diseases. Many splicing regulators have been identified and studied, but RNAs that regulate these splicing regulators have not been fully elucidated. One of the RNAs that regulates the splicing regulators is the non-coding RNA, the homo sapien microRNA (hsa-miR-130b). To understand the function(s) and effects of non-coding RNAs on aberrant mRNA splicing regulators, we identified in the literature a gene, Gemin5, an important component pre mRNA splicing regulators. We searched the miR Base database and identified a microRNA (miRNA), hsa-miR-130b, that target mRNA …

Human Factors Contributing To Nursing Errors, Cheryl K. Roth May 2014

Human Factors Contributing To Nursing Errors, Cheryl K. Roth

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

There has been considerable focus on reducing errors in the hospital setting over the last two centuries, but errors continue to occur at an alarming rate. Two articles are discussed that explore nursing errors. The purpose of these studies was to identify human factors that cause nursing errors and to identify the constructs of likelihood to cause error, ability to intervene, importance, and commonness relating to human factors causing errors. The first paper describes a Delphi Study which examined the likely causes of nursing error using an expert group (n=25) of Quality Assurance, Risk Management, Patient Safety, and staff nurses. …

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Tunneled Central Venous Catheter Dressings In Canadian Blood Stem Cell Transplant, Melanie Keeler May 2014

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Tunneled Central Venous Catheter Dressings In Canadian Blood Stem Cell Transplant, Melanie Keeler

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Central venous catheters (CVC) are an integral tools used in blood stem cell transplant with registered nurses responsible for maintenance and catheter care. However, CVC practice guidelines in the literature are inconsistent or absent. Gaps in the evidence generated several research questions regarding potential variability in CVC practice across Canada and the impact that variability may have on healthcare spending and patient outcomes. A survey of Canadian practice revealed differences in CVC practice across the nation that coincide with discrepant and/or absent guidelines. Device-associated complications such as catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) are both costly and avoidable. Current cost-analyses within the …

Identification Of Structural Signatures Within Transcription Factor Binding Sites And Their Flanking Regions In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Enhanced Through Δtrx Based Multiple Sequence Alignment, Katharina Schulze May 2014

Identification Of Structural Signatures Within Transcription Factor Binding Sites And Their Flanking Regions In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Enhanced Through Δtrx Based Multiple Sequence Alignment, Katharina Schulze

Theses

Traditional transcription factor binding site analyses focus solely on the nucleotide composition of site despite the fact that more recent studies have shown transcription factors to rely on the DNA structural features within and surrounding their binding sites. In this study a metric of intrinsic DNA flexibility referred to as the TRX scale is used to assess the structural features within functionally annotated binding sites and their up- and downstream flanking regions based on their Shannon information content (IC). Two methods of sequence alignment, center and a novel delta TRX based multiple sequence alignment, are compared. The results show that …

Investigating The Interaction Between Positions And Signals Of Height-Channel Loudspeakers In Reproducing Immersive 3d Sound, Antonios Karampourniotis May 2014

Investigating The Interaction Between Positions And Signals Of Height-Channel Loudspeakers In Reproducing Immersive 3d Sound, Antonios Karampourniotis

Theses

Since transmission capacities have significantly increased over the past few years, researchers are now able to transmit a larger amount of data, namely multichannel audio content, in the consumer applications. What has not been investigated in a systematic way yet is how to deliver the multichannel content. Specifically, researchers' attention is focused on the quest of a standardized immersive reproduction format that incorporates height loudspeakers coupled with the new high-resolution and three-dimensional (3D) media content for a comprehensive 3D experience. To better understand and utilize the immersive audio reproduction, this research focused on the (1) interaction between the positioning of …

Why Do Undergraduate Women Persist As Stem Majors? A Study At Twotechnological Universities, Ronald Brandt May 2014

Why Do Undergraduate Women Persist As Stem Majors? A Study At Twotechnological Universities, Ronald Brandt

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields despite significant policy efforts to increase the number of qualified women. Prior research focused on access for women into advanced high school mathematics and science courses. Parity has been achieved in academic prerequisites for STEM studies in higher education, yet the number of women majoring in STEM has remained static. Recent research has focused on the socio-cultural obstacles that women face, including a lower self-confidence in their abilities, bias and gender stereotypes.

A survey was undertaken to examine the self-confidence, opinions and backgrounds of female students persisting as STEM majors at two …

Juror Bias In A Mock Case Involving A Defendant With Kleptomania, Ally Reeves May 2014

Juror Bias In A Mock Case Involving A Defendant With Kleptomania, Ally Reeves

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Jurors are instructed to only consider legal factors when making verdict and sentencing recommendations, but research has shown that biases can still affect these decisions. For instance, research has found that jurors can be influenced by both the type of defendant mental illness (Higgins, Heath, & Grannemann, 2007) and causal attributions regarding the mental illness (Rendell, Huss, & Jensen, 2010), even if jurors have not explicitly been told to consider this information. Although individuals with kleptomania often experience legal troubles (Grant, Odlaug, Davis, & Kim, 2009), this mental illness has not received attention in the mock juror literature. The current …

Quantifying The Impacts Of Initial Condition And Model Uncertainty On Hydrological Forecasts, Caleb Matthew Dechant May 2014

Quantifying The Impacts Of Initial Condition And Model Uncertainty On Hydrological Forecasts, Caleb Matthew Dechant

Dissertations and Theses

Forecasts of hydrological information are vital for many of society's functions. Availability of water is a requirement for any civilization, and this necessitates quantitative estimates of water for effective resource management. The research in this dissertation will focus on the forecasting of hydrological quantities, with emphasis on times of anomalously low water availability, commonly referred to as droughts. Of particular focus is the quantification of uncertainty in hydrological forecasts, and the factors that affect that uncertainty. With this focus, Bayesian methods, including ensemble data assimilation and multi-model combinations, are utilized to develop a probabilistic forecasting system. This system is applied …

Joint Phenotypes, Evolutionary Conflict And The Fundamental Theorem Of Natural Selection, David C. Queller May 2014

Joint Phenotypes, Evolutionary Conflict And The Fundamental Theorem Of Natural Selection, David C. Queller

Biology Faculty Research

Multiple organisms can sometimes affect a common phenotype. For example, the portion of a leaf eaten by an insect is a joint phenotype of the plant and insect and the amount of food obtained by an offspring can be a joint trait with its mother. Here, I describe the evolution of joint phenotypes in quantitative genetic terms. A joint phenotype for multiple species evolves as the sum of additive genetic variances in each species, weighted by the selection on each species. Selective conflict between the interactants occurs when selection takes opposite signs on the joint phenotype. The mean fitness of …

Radical Housewife Activism: Subverting The Toxic Public/Private Binary, Emma Foehringer Merchant May 2014

Radical Housewife Activism: Subverting The Toxic Public/Private Binary, Emma Foehringer Merchant

Pomona Senior Theses

Since the 1960s, the modern environmental movement, though generally liberal in nature, has historically excluded a variety of serious and influential groups. This thesis concentrates on the movement of working-class housewives who emerged into popular American consciousness in the seventies and eighties with their increasingly radical campaigns against toxic contamination in their respective communities. These women represent a group who exhibited the convergence of cultural influences where domesticity and environmentalism met in the middle of American society, and the increasing focus on public health in the environmental movement framed the fight undertaken by women who identified as “housewives.” These women, …

Evaluation And Risk Assessment Of Polycyclic Aromatichydrocarbons In Some Brands Of Tea, Afolabi N. Adisa

Theses (Pre-2016)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) belong to an extensive group of hydrocarbons which have been characterized as Chemical compounds of potential concern (COPCs); as a result of their mutagenic and carcinogenic potential in humans. This study involved the evaluation ofthe concentration of 18-priority PAHs (as described by US.EPA and IARC) present in different tea brands and an assessment of the carcinogenic risk due to the consumption ofthe various brands oftea; from Green, Grey, Black, fine, to decaffeinated brands. All tea brands were found to contain between 10-17 PAHs. Benzo(a)pyrene, Benzo(a)anthracene, Benzo(a)fluoranthene, Benzo(k) fluoranthene, Indeno(I,2,3-c-d)pyrene, Chrysene and Dibenz(a,h)anthracene were found in all …

Farming: It's Not Just For Farmers Anymore, Jennifer Schmidt May 2014

Farming: It's Not Just For Farmers Anymore, Jennifer Schmidt

Pomona Senior Theses

Agricultural education, originally the province of land grant institutions, has recently entered the liberal arts curriculum. This represents a profound shift from the origins of agricultural education, when it was intended primarily as vocational training for future farmers, and has important implications for the future of the American food system. The first chapter of this thesis addresses the history of agricultural education: what was it originally like, and why did it come to be heavily criticized in the late twentieth century? Formal agricultural education changed significantly in response to these criticisms, making it more environmentally sustainable and bringing it into …
