The Impact Of Intervention Practices On The Academic Self-Concept Of Struggling Middle School Students, Dawn C. Bessee Jun 2014

The Impact Of Intervention Practices On The Academic Self-Concept Of Struggling Middle School Students, Dawn C. Bessee

Student Theses and Dissertations

In this study, 432 non-proficient Arkansas middle school students in grades 6-8 completed the Academic Self-Description Questionnaire-I and II, a tool designed to measure academic self-concept (ASC). Analyses were conducted in order to compare the ASC means of students in four types of intervention practices: integrated, segregated, combined, and none. Student intervention groups' ASCs were also compared based on gender, socioeconomic status, and race. All analyses were conducted for ASC in literacy, as well as ASC in mathematics. Statistically significant differences were found in mathematics for students in segregated, combined, or no interventions. The ASC of segregated mathematic intervention groups …

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Promotes The Differentiation Of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Into Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (Enos) Expressing Endothelial-Like Cells., Divya Arya, Shaohua Chang, Paul J Dimuzio, Jeffrey Carpenter, Thomas N Tulenko Jun 2014

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Promotes The Differentiation Of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Into Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (Enos) Expressing Endothelial-Like Cells., Divya Arya, Shaohua Chang, Paul J Dimuzio, Jeffrey Carpenter, Thomas N Tulenko

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Adipose tissue provides a readily available source of autologous stem cells. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have been proposed as a source for endothelial cell substitutes for lining the luminal surface of tissue engineered bypass grafts. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is a key protein in endothelial cell function. Currently, endothelial differentiation from ASCs is limited by poor eNOS expression. The goal of this study was to investigate the role of three molecules, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), bradykinin, and prostaglandin-E1 (PGE1) in ASC endothelial differentiation. Endothelial differentiation markers (CD31, vWF and eNOS) were used to evaluate the level of ASCs differentiation capability. …

Trend Analysis And Modeling Of Health And Environmental Data: Joinpoint And Functional Approach, Ram C. Kafle

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study is divided into two parts: the first is on developing the statistical analysis and modeling of mortality (or incidence) trends using Bayesian joinpoint regression and the second is on fitting differential equations from time series data to derive the rate of change of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Joinpoint regression model identifies significant changes in the trends of the incidence, mortality, and survival of a specific disease in a given population. Bayesian approach of joinpoint regression is widely used in modeling statistical data to identify the points in the trend where the significant changes occur. The purpose …

It is reported that wearable electronic devices are to be used extensively in the next generation of sensors for sports and health monitoring. The information obtained from sensors on the human body depends on the biological parameters, the measurement rate and the number of sensors. The choice of the wireless protocol depends on the required data rates and on system configurations. The communication link quality is achieved with narrowband technologies such as Bluetooth or Zigbee, provided that the number of sensors is small and data rates are low. However, real-time measurements using wideband channels may also be necessary. This paper …

Computational Studies Of Blebbing In Model Erytrocyte Membranes, Eric John Spangler Jun 2014

Computational Studies Of Blebbing In Model Erytrocyte Membranes, Eric John Spangler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Blebbing, a transition in cellular structures that produces cytoskeleton free protrusions of membrane, is a simple process with many causes.Using coarse grained molecular dynamics methods and the erythrocyte model, we attempt to survey these parameters using experimental results as a guide. After establishing the model's validity, with regard to established membrane mechanics, a mismatch parameter, s, is used to tie together the modeling and methods to make predictions about experimental behavior.Expansions to the model, like the weak adhesion parameter, Uadh and an explicit solvent, show promise in solving deficiencies and gaps in understanding the blebbing and vesiculation problems. The expansions and membrane …

How Do Youth And Adults At A Rural High School Conceptualize The Role Of Student? An Investigation Of The Student Role Identity Standard At The Intersection Of Student And Teacher Perspectives, Joseph M. Zenisek Jun 2014

How Do Youth And Adults At A Rural High School Conceptualize The Role Of Student? An Investigation Of The Student Role Identity Standard At The Intersection Of Student And Teacher Perspectives, Joseph M. Zenisek

Dissertations and Theses

Over the past decade, engaging student voice has emerged as an approach to increasing meaningful student involvement in schools towards meeting adolescents' developmental needs for agency, efficacy, and sense of belonging. Central to student voice work is the re-creation of student-teacher and student-organization relationships, generating student identity roles that are fundamentally different from the roles traditionally allocated to students. Conventional concepts of student roles by both adults and youth can act as barriers to increasing student voice. The goal of this study was to develop a better understanding of student role identity. Applying a critical ethnography approach in the context …

Ranked Similarity Search Of Scientific Datasets: An Information Retrieval Approach, Veronika Margaret Megler Jun 2014

Ranked Similarity Search Of Scientific Datasets: An Information Retrieval Approach, Veronika Margaret Megler

Dissertations and Theses

In the past decade, the amount of scientific data collected and generated by scientists has grown dramatically. This growth has intensified an existing problem: in large archives consisting of datasets stored in many files, formats and locations, how can scientists find data relevant to their research interests? We approach this problem in a new way: by adapting Information Retrieval techniques, developed for searching text documents, into the world of (primarily numeric) scientific data. We propose an approach that uses a blend of automated and curated methods to extract metadata from large repositories of scientific data. We then perform searches over …

Host Species Restriction Of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Through Its Receptor, Dipeptidyl Peptidase 4, Neeltje Van Doremalen, Kerri L. Miazgowicz, Shauna Milne-Price, Trenton Bushmaker, Shelly Robertson, Dana Scott, Joerg Kinne, Jason S. Mclellan

Dartmouth Scholarship

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) emerged in 2012. Recently, the MERS-CoV receptor dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) was identified and the specific interaction of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of MERS-CoV spike protein and DPP4 was determined by crystallography. Animal studies identified rhesus macaques but not hamsters, ferrets, or mice to be susceptible for MERS-CoV. Here, we investigated the role of DPP4 in this observed species tropism. Cell lines of human and nonhuman primate origin were permissive of MERS-CoV, whereas hamster, ferret, or mouse cell lines were not, despite the presence of DPP4. Expression of human DPP4 in nonsusceptible BHK and …

The Reproductive Lives Of Chuukese Women: Transnationalism In Guam And Chuuk, Sarah Ann Smith Jun 2014

The Reproductive Lives Of Chuukese Women: Transnationalism In Guam And Chuuk, Sarah Ann Smith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chuuk, one state of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), experiences significant transnational migration to the United States (U.S.), particularly to the Territory of Guam. This migration is facilitated by the Compact of Free Association (COFA), an agreement with several Micronesian countries previously under U.S. administration that allows for free movement of their citizens into the U.S. Although part of Micronesia, Guam's colonized residents resist an identity connected to rest of Micronesia. With very poor health outcomes, the Chuukese represent a political and social body of bodies that bring sickness, babies and increased costs to the Guam government without adequate …

An Ontology-Based Collaborative Knowledge Management Network To Enhance The Reusability Of Inter-Organizational Knowledge, Nelson K.Y. Leung, Sim Kim Lau, Joshua Fan

Communications of the IIMA

A number of knowledge management (KM) approaches based on individual organizational KM strategies and business requirements have been developed without taking system interoperation into consideration. In this paper, a collaborative inter-organizational KM network is proposed to allow various organizations to access and retrieve inter-organizational knowledge. While knowledge engineers can reuse the inter-organizational knowledge to create and evaluate its own organizational knowledge, general users benefit from the effectiveness and efficiency of searching for relevant inter-organizational knowledge within the network

Simulation Of A Two-Category Secured Access Database, Marn Ling Shing, Chen-Chi Shing, Kuo Lane Chen, Huei Lee

Communications of the IIMA

Electronic commerce users continually access sensitive information on business databases through the Internet. In order to protect databases from unauthorized access, confidentiality policies must be applied. Confidentiality of the database is often protected by data encryption or proprietary software. It can be protected by a monitoring system using Markov Chain and Bell- LaPadula Models. In this paper, a two category secured access database model by semi-Markov chains is discussed. This paper simulates this simplified two category secured access database model, and issues on security management are also addressed.

Pgs: A Tool For Association Study Of High-Dimensional Microrna Expression Data With Repeated Measures, Yinan Zheng, Zhe Fei, Wei Zhang, Justin Starren, Lei Liu, Andrea Baccarelli, Yi Li, Lifang Hou

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Motivation: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short single-stranded non-coding molecules that usually function as negative regulators to silence or suppress gene expression. Due to interested in the dynamic nature of the miRNA and reduced microarray and sequencing costs, a growing number of researchers are now measuring high-dimensional miRNAs expression data using repeated or multiple measures in which each individual has more than one sample collected and measured over time. However, the commonly used site-by-site multiple testing may impair the value of repeated or multiple measures data by ignoring the inherent dependent structure, which lead to problems including underpowered results after multiple comparison …

Cholinergic control of the heart is exerted by two distinct branches; the autonomic component represented by the parasympathetic nervous system, and the recently described non-neuronal cardiomyocyte cholinergic machinery. Previous evidence has shown that reduced cholinergic function leads to deleterious effects on the myocardium. Yet, whether conditions of increased cholinergic signaling can offset the pathological remodeling induced by sympathetic hyperactivity, and its consequences for these two cholinergic axes are unknown. Here, we investigated two models of sympathetic hyperactivity: i) the chronic beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation evoked by isoproterenol (ISO), and ii) the alpha(2A)/alpha(2C)-drenergic receptor knockout (KO) mice that lack pre-synaptic adrenergic receptors. …

Introduction

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a malignant pediatric brain tumor associated with dismal outcome. Recent high-throughput molecular studies have shown a high frequency of mutations in histone-encoding genes (H3F3A and HIST1B) and distinctive epigenetic alterations in these tumors. Epigenetic alterations described in DIPG include global DNA hypomethylation. In addition to the generally repressive methylcytosine DNA alteration, 5-hydroxymethylation of cytosine (5hmC) is recognized as an epigenetic mark associated with active chromatin. We hypothesized that in addition to alterations in DNA methylation, that there would be changes in 5hmC. To test this hypothesis, we performed immunohistochemical studies to …

Background

We have previously suggested a method for proteome wide analysis of variation at functional residues wherein we identified the set of all human genes with nonsynonymous single nucleotide variation (nsSNV) in the active site residue of the corresponding proteins. 34 of these proteins were shown to have a 1:1:1 enzyme:pathway:reaction relationship, making these proteins ideal candidates for laboratory validation through creation and observation of specific yeast active site knock-outs and downstream targeted metabolomics experiments. Here we present the next step in the workflow toward using yeast metabolic modeling to predict human metabolic behavior resulting from nsSNV.

Interactions Of Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factors And 3' Untranslated Region Of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus Mrna During Protein Synthesis: A Study Of Equilibrium Binding, Kinetics And Thermodynamics, Bidisha Banerjee Jun 2014

Interactions Of Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factors And 3' Untranslated Region Of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus Mrna During Protein Synthesis: A Study Of Equilibrium Binding, Kinetics And Thermodynamics, Bidisha Banerjee

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) 4F binding to mRNA is the first committed step in cap-dependent protein synthesis. Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) employs a cap-independent mechanism of translation initiation which is mediated by a structural element BTE (BYDV translation element) located in the 3’ UTR of its mRNA. eIF4F bound the BTE and a translational inactive mutant with high affinity; thus questioning the role of eIF4F in translation of BYDV. To examine the effects of eIF4F in BYDV translation initiation, BTE mutants with widely different in vitro translation efficiencies ranging from 5-164% compared to WT were studied. Using fluorescence anisotropy …

Evolution And Ethics, Franklin Roy Bennett Jun 2014

Evolution And Ethics, Franklin Roy Bennett

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Does evolution inform the ancient debate about the roles that instinct (emotion/passion/sentiment/feeling) and reason do and/or should play in how we decide what to do? Evolutionary ethicists typically adopt Darwinism as a suitable explanation for evolution, and on that basis draw conclusions about moral epistemology. However, if Darwinism is to be offered as a premise from which conclusions about moral epistemology are drawn, in order to assess such arguments we must assess that premise. This reveals the highly speculative and metaphysical quality of our theoretical explanations for how evolution happens. Clarifying that helps to facilitate an assessment of the epistemological …

Ecology Of Terrorism: Cross-National Comparison Of Terrorist Attacks, Katharine A. Boyd Jun 2014

Ecology Of Terrorism: Cross-National Comparison Of Terrorist Attacks, Katharine A. Boyd

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The term terrorism is used to describe a large range of behaviors conducted by a wide variety of groups. Terrorist groups differ in ideology, size, financial support, group longevity, and the number of alliances with other terrorist groups. Relatedly, terrorist groups conduct different number of attacks with varying intents to cause fatalities using diverse forms of violence. This study uses ecological theory to contextualize terrorist violence as a product of terrorist group traits in relation to the environmental context. It is hypothesized that terrorist violence is associated with group traits in relation to the varying political, social, and religious contexts …
