A Cross-Species Study Of Gesture And Its Role In Symbolic Development: Implications For The Gestural Theory Of Language Evolution, K. Gillespie-Lynch, P. M. Greenfield, Y. Feng, S. Savage-Rumbaugh, H. Lyn

Faculty Publications

Using a naturalistic video database, we examined whether gestures scaffold the symbolic development of a language-enculturated chimpanzee, a language-enculturated bonobo, and a human child during the second year of life. These three species constitute a complete clade: species possessing a common immediate ancestor. A basic finding was the functional and formal similarity of many gestures between chimpanzee, bonobo, and human child. The child's symbols were spoken words; the apes' symbols were lexigrams - non-iconic visual signifiers. A developmental pattern in which gestural representation of a referent preceded symbolic representation of the same referent appeared in all three species (but was …

Factors In Long-Term Algal Composition Of Cayman Reefs: Determining Effects Of Natural Disturbance And Grazer Pressures, Patrick J. Doughty Jun 2014

Factors In Long-Term Algal Composition Of Cayman Reefs: Determining Effects Of Natural Disturbance And Grazer Pressures, Patrick J. Doughty

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Abstract. Current research shows a worldwide shift in the population dynamics of reefs attributed to increasing human disturbance. With increasing nutrient additions, competitive populations of turf and macroalgae bloom and dominate coral reefs leading to decreased health of the reef as a whole. Unfortunately, few studies have been done showing the long-term changes in algae composition on reefs. In order to find the significant factors in the long-term composition of algae on reefs, algae and fish abundance data were collected through the Lawrence University Marine Program and analyzed for this study. Algae were split into three functional groups: encrusting, turf …

Solution Processable Novel Organic Electronic Devices For New Generation Biomedical Applications, Munish Puri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The following dissertation addresses a novel low cost process developed to fabricate a Vertical Organic Field Effect Transistor (VOFET). The solution processable VOFET is designed, fabricated and tested in the context of bioengineering domains. The scope of distinct biomedical applications has also been explored.

Organic thin-film transistors are gathering industrial attention as a potential candidate for future electronics analogous to silicon technology. Low fabrication cost, structural miniaturization and low operational voltage are the challenges for fabricating an Organic Field Effect Transistor (OFET). To create these devices, OFETs require new design paradigms and wet processing routes. However, conventional lateral OFET geometry …

Methods For Exploring Treatment Effect Heterogeneity In Subgroup Analysis: An Application To Global Clinical Trials, I. Manjula Schou, Ian C. Marschner Jun 2014

Methods For Exploring Treatment Effect Heterogeneity In Subgroup Analysis: An Application To Global Clinical Trials, I. Manjula Schou, Ian C. Marschner

COBRA Preprint Series

Multi-country randomised clinical trials (MRCTs) are common in the medical literature and their interpretation has been the subject of extensive recent discussion. In many MRCTs, an evaluation of treatment effect homogeneity across countries or regions is conducted. Subgroup analysis principles require a significant test of interaction in order to claim heterogeneity of treatment effect across subgroups, such as countries in a MRCT. As clinical trials are typically underpowered for tests of interaction, overly optimistic expectations of treatment effect homogeneity can lead researchers, regulators and other stakeholders to over-interpret apparent differences between subgroups even when heterogeneity tests are insignificant. In this …

Self-Reported Versus Actual Weight And Height Data Contribute To Different Weight Misperception Classifications, William T. Dalton, Liang Wang, Jodi Southerland, Karen E. Schetzina, Deborah L. Slawson

ETSU Faculty Works

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examine potential differences between two approaches to defining adolescent weight misperception. Specifically, weight status perception was compared with self-reported weight status and actual weight status (based on body mass index percentiles calculated from self-reported and actual weights and heights, respectively). Furthermore, the accuracy of assigning weight status based on body mass index percentiles calculated from self-reported weights and heights was assessed by comparing them with actual weight status.

Methods: Data were extracted from Team Up for Healthy Living, an 8-week, school-based obesity prevention program in southern Appalachia. Participants (N = 1509) were …

A Model Of Grammatical Category Acquisition Using Adaptation And Selection, Sarah Zitting Cluff Jun 2014

A Model Of Grammatical Category Acquisition Using Adaptation And Selection, Sarah Zitting Cluff

Theses and Dissertations

By the later preschool years, most children have a knowledge of the grammatical categories of their native language and are capable of expanding this knowledge to novel words. To model this accomplishment, researchers have created a variety of explicit, testable models or algorithms. These have had partial but promising success in extracting grammatical word categories from transcriptions of caregiver input to young children. Additional insight into children's learning of the grammatical categories of words might be gained from evolutionary computing algorithms, which apply principles of evolutionary biology such as variation, adaptive change, self-regulation, and inheritance to computational models. The current …

As a key component of the carbon cycle, soil CO2 efflux (SCE) is being increasingly studied to improve our mechanistic understanding of this important carbon flux. Predicting ecosystem responses to climate change often depends on extrapolation of current relationships between ecosystem processes and their climatic drivers to conditions not yet experienced by the ecosystem. This raises the question to what extent these relationships remain unaltered beyond the current climatic window for which observations are available to constrain the relationships. Here, we evaluate whether current responses of SCE to fluctuations in soil temperature and soil water content can be used …

Connecting Wind-Driven Upwelling And Offshore Stratification To Nearshore Internal Bores And Oxygen Variability, Ryan K. Walter, C. Brock Woodson, Paul R. Leary, Stephen G. Monismith Jun 2014

Connecting Wind-Driven Upwelling And Offshore Stratification To Nearshore Internal Bores And Oxygen Variability, Ryan K. Walter, C. Brock Woodson, Paul R. Leary, Stephen G. Monismith

Physics

This study utilizes field observations in southern Monterey Bay, CA, to examine how regional-scale upwelling and changing offshore (shelf) conditions influence nearshore internal bores. We show that the low-frequency wind forcing (e.g., upwelling/relaxation time scales) modifies the offshore stratification and thermocline depth. This in turn alters the strength and structure of observed internal bores in the near-shore. An internal bore strength index is defined using the high-pass filtered potential energy density anomaly in the nearshore. During weak upwelling favorable conditions and wind relaxations, the offshore thermocline deepens. In this case, both the amplitude of the offshore internal tide and the …

Macroinvertebrates And Excessive Fine Sediment Conditions In Oregon Coastal Streams, Patrick M. Edwards Jun 2014

Macroinvertebrates And Excessive Fine Sediment Conditions In Oregon Coastal Streams, Patrick M. Edwards

Dissertations and Theses

The Pacific Coastal ecoregion contains large tracts of economically important forest lands that also serve as critical stream habitat for endangered Salmonids. Excessive fine sediment deposition in streams of this region is a major environmental concern in the region but difficult to measure directly. The use of stream invertebrates to monitor fine sediment conditions in streams requires careful consideration of several important factors that complicate their use as bioindicators including high spatial and temporal variability and covariance with other environmental variables.

To evaluate the use of stream invertebrates as bioindicators of excessive fine sediment, three hypotheses were tested. The first …

An Overview Of The Gene Regulatory Network Controlling Trichome Development In The Model Plant, Arabidopsis, Sitakanta Pattanaik, Barunava Patra, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Ling Yuan

Kentucky Tobacco Research and Development Center Faculty Publications

Trichomes are specialized epidermal cells located on aerial parts of plants and are associated with a wide array of biological processes. Trichomes protect plants from adverse conditions including UV light and herbivore attack and are also an important source of a number of phytochemicals. The simple unicellular trichomes of Arabidopsis serve as an excellent model to study molecular mechanism of cell differentiation and pattern formation in plants. The emerging picture suggests that the developmental process is controlled by a transcriptional network involving three major groups of transcription factors (TFs): the R2R3 MYB, basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH), and WD40 repeat (WDR) protein. …

Heterochrony, Modularity, And The Functional Evolution Of The Mechanosensory Lateral Line Canal System Of Fishes, Nathan C. Bird, Jacqueline F. Webb

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: The canals of the mechanosensory lateral line system are components of the dermatocranium, and demonstrate phenotypic variation in bony fishes. Widened lateral line canals evolved convergently in a limited number of families of teleost fishes and it had been hypothesized that they evolved from narrow canals via heterochrony and explore modularity in the lateral line system. Two species of cichlids with different canal phenotypes were used to test a hypothesis of heterochrony. Histological material prepared from ontogenetic series of Aulonocara stuartgranti (widened canals) and Tramitichromis sp. (narrow canals) was analyzed using ANCOVA to determine rates of increase in canal …

Background

Trypanosoma cruzi ribosomal P proteins, P2β and P0, induce high levels of antibodies in patients with chronic Chagas' disease Cardiomyopathy (CCC). It is well known that these antibodies alter the beating rate of cardiomyocytes and provoke apoptosis by their interaction with β1-adrenergic and M2-muscarinic cardiac receptors. Based on these findings, we decided to study the cellular immune response to these proteins in CCC patients compared to non-infected individuals.

Methodology/Principal findings

We evaluated proliferation, presence of surface activation markers and cytokine production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) stimulated with P2β, the C-terminal portion of P0 (CP0) proteins and T. …

Spring Hydrology Determines Summer Net Carbon Uptake In Northern Ecosystems, Yonghong Yi, John S. Kimball, Rolf H. Reichle

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Increased photosynthetic activity and enhanced seasonal CO2 exchange of northern ecosystems have been observed from a variety of sources including satellite vegetation indices (such as the normalized difference vegetation index; NDVI) and atmospheric CO2 measurements. Most of these changes have been attributed to strong warming trends in the northern high latitudes (50° N). Here we analyze the interannual variation of summer net carbon uptake derived from atmospheric CO2 measurements and satellite NDVI in relation to surface meteorology from regional observational records. We find that increases in spring precipitation and snow pack promote summer net carbon uptake of …

Blattabacterium Genome: Structure, Function, And Evolution, Austin Alleman Jun 2014

Blattabacterium Genome: Structure, Function, And Evolution, Austin Alleman

Biology Theses

Blattabacterium, an obligate bacterial endosymbiont, functions as a mechanism of nitrogen recycling and nutrient synthesis within the Order Blattaria (cockroaches). Through genome annotation and the application of bioinformatics, the function of Blattabacterium within the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea was described. Results of analyses indicate that the Blattabacterium genome, comprised of ~620,000 base pairs and ~620 individual genes, is drastically reduced when compared Flavobacterium, Blattabacterium’s closest free-living relative. However, the Blattabacterium genome retained functionality vital to host survival and fecundity and functions as a source of additional nutrient biosynthesis within its host. Like other intracellular endosymbionts, the Blattabacterium genome has a G+C …

Development Of Genetic Ssr Markers In Blumeria Graminis F. Sp. Hordei And Application To Isolates From Australia, Madeline Tucker, C S. Moffat, Simon R. Ellwood, K C. Tan, Kithsiri Jayasena, Richard P. Oliver

Biosecurity Research Articles

The barley powdery mildew pathogen, Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei (Bgh), exists in numerous haplotypes and displays significant differences in fungicide sensitivity. It causes considerable yield losses throughout the world. Microsatellite SSRs are useful tools to study the population level and biogeographic aspects of intraspecific diversity, but so far none have been defined for Bgh. Here, eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were identified and characterized. Primer pairs amplifying the loci were then applied to 111 isolates of Bgh from Australia. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 13, and Nei's genetic diversity ranged from 0·25 to 0·76. The …

Facies Analysis, Sequence Stratigraphy And Paleogeography Of The Middle Jurassic (Callovian) Entrada Sandstone: Traps, Tectonics, And Analog, George R. Jennings Iii Jun 2014

Facies Analysis, Sequence Stratigraphy And Paleogeography Of The Middle Jurassic (Callovian) Entrada Sandstone: Traps, Tectonics, And Analog, George R. Jennings Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The late Middle Jurassic (Callovian) Entrada Sandstone has been divided into two general facies associations consisting primarily of eolian sandstones in eastern Utah and "muddy" redbeds in central Utah. Sedimentary structures within the redbed portion are explained by the interfingering of inland sabkha, alluvial, and eolian depositional systems. A complete succession from the most basinward facies to the most terrestrial facies in the Entrada Sandstone consists of inland sabkha facies overlain by either alluvial or eolian facies. Where both alluvial and eolian facies interfinger, alluvial facies overlain by eolian facies is considered a normal succession. Sequence boundaries, often identified by …

Remote Sensing Suspended Sediment Concentration In The Yellow River, Liqin Qu Jun 2014

Remote Sensing Suspended Sediment Concentration In The Yellow River, Liqin Qu

Doctoral Dissertations

This study aimed to develop an approach to use publicly accessible satellite imagery to quantify the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in the Yellow River. The suspended sediment in the river affects to the hydrologic, geomorphologic, and ecologic functioning of river floodplains. Commonly used sampling methods are time consuming, labor intensive, and provide only point data. Current studies using re- mote sensing have focused mild waters (e.g. coastal, estuarine, lagoon, lakes and reservoirs) from where the method developed might not be appropriate for highly turbid inland waters. A laboratory spectrum experiment was conducted to investigate the reflective nature of sediment-laden water …

Characterization Of Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate Protein Conjugates, Morgen Mhike Jun 2014

Characterization Of Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate Protein Conjugates, Morgen Mhike

Dissertations and Theses

Diisocyanates (dNCO) such as methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) are used primarily as cross-linking agents in the production of polyurethane products such as paints, elastomers, coatings and adhesives, and are the most frequently reported cause of chemically induced immunologic sensitization and occupational asthma (OA). Immune mediated hypersensitivity reactions to dNCOs include allergic rhinitis, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and allergic contact dermatitis.

There is currently no simple diagnosis for the identification of dNCO asthma due to the variability of symptoms and uncertainty regarding the underlying mechanisms. Immunological sensitization due to dNCO exposure is traditionally thought to require initial conjugation of the dNCO to …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oxidative stress, which is the loss of balance between antioxidant defense and oxidant production in the cells, is implicated in the molecular mechanism of heavy metal-induced neurotoxicity. Given the key role of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in inducing oxidative stress, we investigated their role in disrupting the integrity and function of immortalized human brain microvascular endothelial cells (hCMEC/D3). To study this, hCMEC/D3 cells were exposed to control media or to media containing different concentrations of Pb or Cd. Those exposed to Pb or Cd showed significantly higher oxidative stress than the untreated group, as indicated by cell viability, reactive …
