More Than A Tribesman: The New African Diasporan Identity, Stephen M. Magu Jun 2014

More Than A Tribesman: The New African Diasporan Identity, Stephen M. Magu

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Current global levels of immigration stand at about 300 million persons; of these, IFAD estimates that 30 million Africans are in the Diaspora. The contributions of diasporic Africans to their communities and to the cultural experiences of the United States are multimodal. To their domiciles, they contribute economically, empowering their families to become more active and less dependent on the state, while transmitting ideas about democracy and better government. At the same time, they contribute to their adopted homelands through social and cultural activities, cultural festivals and other indicators of cultural connectedness to their motherlands. The African diaspora of necessity …

The Body As Politic: Education And The Performance Art Of Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Dana Cole

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Art has been used as a tool in many fields as a method to tap into different ways of knowing and learning. It promotes creativity and individual expression by encouraging innovation and by opening up possibilities to different ways of expressing and experiencing. My work looks at the performance art of Guillermo Gómez-Peña as a form of public pedagogy using a/r/tography, an arts-based methodology, to illuminate way art it can be used to enhance the learning experience. This article examine the in-between spaces created in Gómez-Peña’s work as epistemological borderzones underscoring how borders come together in heterogeneity, contradiction, and flux …

Global Summation Of Radial Frequency Patterns And The Effect Of Sudden Onset Glare On Shape Discrimination, Edgar Ekure Jun 2014

Global Summation Of Radial Frequency Patterns And The Effect Of Sudden Onset Glare On Shape Discrimination, Edgar Ekure

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

ABSTRACT Global summation of radial frequency patterns and the effect of sudden onset glare on shape discrimination The purpose of this study was to provide evidence of global pooling around the circumference of the Radial frequency (RF) pattern, and to study the effect of sudden onset glare on shape discrimination. The RF stimuli were generated by the amplitude modulation of the radius of a circle which deforms them from circularity, while the cross sectional luminance profile was the fourth derivative of Gaussians (D4). The amplitude of the stimuli determines how distinct the pattern is and thus measures the degree of …

Columnar Molecular Aggregation In The Aqueous Solutions Of Disodium Cromoglycate, D. M. Agra-Kooijman, G. Singh, A. Lorenz, Peter J. Collings, H.-S. Kitzerow, S. Kumar Jun 2014

Columnar Molecular Aggregation In The Aqueous Solutions Of Disodium Cromoglycate, D. M. Agra-Kooijman, G. Singh, A. Lorenz, Peter J. Collings, H.-S. Kitzerow, S. Kumar

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Stack, chimneylike, and threadlike assemblies have previously been proposed for the structure of disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) aggregates in aqueous solutions. The results of the synchrotron x-ray scattering investigations reported here reveal the formation of simple columnar assemblies with pi-pi stacking at a separation of 3.4 angstrom between the DSCG molecules. Lateral separation between the assemblies is concentration and temperature dependent, varying from similar to 35 to 42 angstrom in the orientationally ordered nematic (N) phase and from 27 to 32 angstrom in the columnar or middle (M) phase having long range lateral positional order. The assemblies' length depends on concentration …

Engineering An In Vitro Metastasis Platform, Justus Carlisle, Mark-Phillip Pebworth Jun 2014

Engineering An In Vitro Metastasis Platform, Justus Carlisle, Mark-Phillip Pebworth

Bioengineering Senior Theses

Although metastasis is the primary cause of cancer deaths and results in 90% of all cancer fatalities currently, all attempts to discover anti-metastatic drugs have failed. Many of the traditional methods of studying cell migration, using two-dimensional (2D) platforms, only study two-dimensional migration, which is fundamentally different and more multifaceted than the three-dimensional migration that occurs in vivo. To more accurately capture this in vivo variation, we developed a two-and-a-half-dimensional (2.5D) cell culture platform to better study three-dimensional (3D) migration. This platform consists of a layer of alginate on top of a monolayer of cells grown on tissue culture polystyrene …

Talens: Genome Surgery, Carson Harms, Serena Lerkantitham

Bioengineering Senior Theses

Genetic engineering has always held great opportunity for the field of gene therapy. If the cause of a genetic disease can be determined, correction of this gene would allow for an efficient and permanent cure. However, current technologies utilizing engineered retroviruses have serious drawbacks that significantly limit their practical applications for gene therapy. In this project we investigate a novel genetic editing technology called TALENs. By utilizing a modular protein isolated from a plant pathogen that can be quickly and efficiently redesigned to recognize and bind to any desired sequence of DNA combined with a nuclease, we can target a …

Design And Evaluation Of A Home- Scale Arsenic Removal System, Megan Alferness, Alexandria Casares

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

The problem of arsenic contamination affects millions of people worldwide. A home-scale arsenic removal system could provide families in Nepal access to clean drinking water. It would also reduce the risk of adverse health issues that are associated with ingesting arsenic contaminated water. Our experiments show that using electrocoagulation is an effective method of removing arsenic from water. We were able to get the level of arsenic below 10 ppb in 60 minutes of treatment using various system configurations. We identified several parameters that affect the treatment process, the most important being the charge loading, or the amount of charge …

Early Back-To-Africa Migration Into The Horn Of Africa, Jason A. Hodgson, Connie J. Mulligan, Ali Al-Meeri, Ryan L. Raaum Jun 2014

Early Back-To-Africa Migration Into The Horn Of Africa, Jason A. Hodgson, Connie J. Mulligan, Ali Al-Meeri, Ryan L. Raaum

Publications and Research

Genetic studies have identified substantial non-African admixture in the Horn of Africa (HOA). In the most recent genomic studies, this non-African ancestry has been attributed to admixture with Middle Eastern populations during the last few thousand years. However, mitochondrial and Y chromosome data are suggestive of earlier episodes of admixture. To investigate this further, we generated new genome-wide SNP data for a Yemeni population sample and merged these new data with published genome-wide genetic data from the HOA and a broad selection of surrounding populations. We used multidimensional scaling and ADMIXTURE methods in an exploratory data analysis to develop hypotheses …

Taking one pound of food to space costs over $10,000. A plant growth chamber in space would help reduce the cost of transporting food by creating a healthy, long-term source of food that can be used for extended space missions. Currently, there is a lack of knowledge in gravity response mechanisms of plants to facilitate employing such a system. The overarching goal of this project is to add to the current body of knowledge related to growing plants in space by conducting research regarding the effect of hypergravity on cherry belle radish growth. To successfully accomplish this goal, an aeroponic …

Comparing Population Density Estimation Techniques For Columbia Black-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus Columbianus): Fecal Standing Crop And Distance Sampling Methods, Jubilee D. Brenneman Jun 2014

Comparing Population Density Estimation Techniques For Columbia Black-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus Columbianus): Fecal Standing Crop And Distance Sampling Methods, Jubilee D. Brenneman

Honors Projects

I estimated deer density and population size on Blakely Island, WA, using the fecal standing crop (FSC) method described by Martin et al. (2011). I compared the FSC method with a well established and broadly applicable estimation method, distance sampling. Additionally, architecture of a commonly browsed shrub, Ocean Spray (Holodiscus discolor), was measured as an indicator of browsing pressure. Fecal standing crop was estimated by counting pellet groups along 26, 100 x 2m line transects. Deer density was estimated using these data and the equation derived by Martin et al. (2011). Distance sampling consisted of recording perpendicular distance …

Use Of Pollutant Load Regression Models With Various Sampling Frequencies For Annual Load Estimation, Youn Shik Park, Bernard Engel

School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Water quality data are collected by various sampling frequencies, and the data may not be collected at a high frequency nor over the range of streamflow conditions. Therefore, regression models are used to estimate pollutant data for days on which water quality data were not measured. Pollutant load regression models were evaluated with six sampling frequencies for daily nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment data. Annual pollutant load estimates exhibited various behaviors by sampling frequency and also by the regression model used. Several distinct sampling frequency features were observed in the study. The first was that more frequent sampling did not necessarily …

Hive-Hexagon: High-Performance, Parallelized Sequence Alignment For Next-Generation Sequencing Data Analysis, Luis Santana-Quintero, Hayley Dingerdissen, Jean Thierry-Mieg, Raja Mazumder, Vahan Simonyan

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Due to the size of Next-Generation Sequencing data, the computational challenge of sequence alignment has been vast. Inexact alignments can take up to 90% of total CPU time in bioinformatics pipelines. High-performance Integrated Virtual Environment (HIVE), a cloud-based environment optimized for storage and analysis of extra-large data, presents an algorithmic solution: the HIVE-hexagon DNA sequence aligner. HIVE-hexagon implements novel approaches to exploit both characteristics of sequence space and CPU, RAM and Input/Output (I/O) architecture to quickly compute accurate alignments. Key components of HIVE-hexagon include non-redundification and sorting of sequences; floating diagonals of linearized dynamic programming matrices; and consideration of cross-similarity …

Tender Loving Care And The Woman With A History Of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, Emily L. Gruetzmacher Jun 2014

Tender Loving Care And The Woman With A History Of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, Emily L. Gruetzmacher

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Recurrent pregnancy loss affects one to five percent of couples. This complication is traumatic for women and has psychological implications, including anxiety and depression. Increased monitoring and support – tender loving care – from clinicians has been shown to positively impact pregnancy outcomes during subsequent pregnancies in women with recurrent pregnancy loss. The affect of tender loving care on pregnancy outcomes and psychological distress is not entirely clear, however. We propose a randomized controlled trial to determine if these associations are statistically significant. Specifically, we will recruit women with any cause for early recurrent pregnancy loss and compare early pregnancy …
