Using State Merging And State Pruning To Address The Path Explosion Problem Faced By Symbolic Execution, Patrick T. Copeland Jun 2014

Using State Merging And State Pruning To Address The Path Explosion Problem Faced By Symbolic Execution, Patrick T. Copeland

Theses and Dissertations

Symbolic execution is a promising technique to discover software vulnerabilities and improve the quality of code. However, symbolic execution suffers from a path explosion problem where the number of possible paths within a program grows exponentially with respect to loops and conditionals. New techniques are needed to address the path explosion problem. This research presents a novel algorithm which combines the previously researched techniques of state merging and state pruning. A prototype of the algorithm along with a pure state merging and pure state pruning are implemented in the KLEE symbolic execution tool with the goal of increasing the code …

Android Based Behavioral Biometric Authentication Via Multi-Modal Fusion, Anthony J. Grenga Jun 2014

Android Based Behavioral Biometric Authentication Via Multi-Modal Fusion, Anthony J. Grenga

Theses and Dissertations

Because mobile devices are easily lost or stolen, continuous authentication is extremely desirable for them. Behavioral biometrics provides non-intrusive continuous authentication that has much less impact on usability than active authentication. However single-modality behavioral biometrics has proven less accurate than standard active authentication. This thesis presents a behavioral biometric system that uses multi-modal fusion with user data from touch, keyboard, and orientation sensors. Testing of ve users shows that fusion of modalities provides more accurate authentication than each individual modalities by itself. Using the BayesNet classification algorithm, fusion achieves False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR) values of …

Advanced Composite Air Frame Life Cycle Cost Estimating, Mohamed M. Al Romaihi Jun 2014

Advanced Composite Air Frame Life Cycle Cost Estimating, Mohamed M. Al Romaihi

Theses and Dissertations

Because of their versatility, advanced composite materials are being used at an increasing rate in the manufacturing of aircraft, as well as other products, such as autos, sporting goods, and medical products. Airframe structure materials used throughout aerospace manufacturing processes consist of significantly greater percentages of advanced composite materials. However, these manufacturing processes and the associated reduction in part counts are not considered in the aircraft procurement and life cycle cost (LCC) management processes in the United States Air Force (USAF) community or the Department of Defense (DoD). This situation led the leaders of USAF and DoD to restudy the …

Investigating The Diversity Of Single-Stranded Dna Bacteriophages In Marine Environments, Max Stephen Hopkins Jun 2014

Investigating The Diversity Of Single-Stranded Dna Bacteriophages In Marine Environments, Max Stephen Hopkins

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There are estimated to be 1030 virus-like particles in the world's oceans. Most are viruses that infect bacteria, called `bacteriophages' or simply `phages'. Phages exert tremendous influence on marine biogeochemical cycling because they are responsible for about half of all bacterial death in the oceans, causing nutrient release into the dissolved and particulate organic matter pools. Traditional paradigms of phage biology held that most of these ocean phages belonged to the Caudovirales group: phages that contain a double-stranded DNA genome within a geometric capsid `head' to which a `tail' is joined, in one of several morphological variants, that is the …

An R Package For Implementing Multiple Evapotranspiration Formulations, Danlu Guo, Seth Westra, Holger R. Maier Jun 2014

An R Package For Implementing Multiple Evapotranspiration Formulations, Danlu Guo, Seth Westra, Holger R. Maier

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The use of multiple evapotranspiration (ET) models is critical for exploring the ambiguity in the representations of ET processes. Although ensemble ET models are increasingly used to address this ambiguity, practical issues include: 1) the diversity of process representations, which require different input data and constants; 2) the diversity of nomenclature, terminology and units used in the literature; and 3) the complexity of some formulations, requiring significant time for coding and leading to potential user errors. We describe an R package that estimates both actual and potential ET from 17 well-known formulations. Results are presented as summary text and plots, …

The new ESS mapping application is intended as a contribution to solve the problem how demands for and supply of multiple ESS can be mapped in a reliable and cost-efficient way. Comparable to efforts in biology in mapping the occurrence of plants and animals, the new smartphone application can be used as a tool in citizen science as well as in research projects by students and scientists. Based on The Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) or …

Using Surrogate Modelling For Fast Estimation Of Water Budget Component In A Regional Watershed, Aurelien Hazart, Koji Mori, Kazuhiro Tada, Hiroyuki Tosaka Jun 2014

Using Surrogate Modelling For Fast Estimation Of Water Budget Component In A Regional Watershed, Aurelien Hazart, Koji Mori, Kazuhiro Tada, Hiroyuki Tosaka

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We developed a method based on surrogate modelling to estimate the water flow in both surface and subsurface sections of a basin watershed. The real case of a regional watershed near Tokyo with a catchment area of 100km2 was targeted with observations on a period of about 16 years. Our purpose was to propose a tool of water resources management that can be operated daily by the person in charge of a watershed without expert knowledge of the numerical modelling process. Replacement of complex physical models by surrogate models like artificial neural networks (ANN) has been proved useful in …

Use Of The Warmf Model To Identify Sources Of Oxygen Impairment And Potential Management Strategies For The San Joaquin River Watershed, William T. Stringfellow, Joel Herr, Scott Sheeder, Shelly Gulati, Gregory Weissmann, Mary Kay Camarillo, Micheal Jue Jun 2014

Use Of The Warmf Model To Identify Sources Of Oxygen Impairment And Potential Management Strategies For The San Joaquin River Watershed, William T. Stringfellow, Joel Herr, Scott Sheeder, Shelly Gulati, Gregory Weissmann, Mary Kay Camarillo, Micheal Jue

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Eutrophication of the San Joaquin River (SJR) has resulted in low dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions, which has led to a regulatory response and development of total maximum daily load (TMDL) allocations. Due to the dynamic nature of processes governing oxygen depletion in the SJR, a model was needed to help stakeholders understand the fate and transport of nutrients and oxygen-demanding substances that cause the low DO conditions. Here, the Watershed Analysis Risk Management Framework (WARMF) model was used to simulate nutrient removal and control strategies, accounting for the secondary effects of growth and transformation between sources and discharge. Using the …

Modelling Similarities Of Endocrine Disruptors In Pine Needles And Human Breast Milk, Kristina Voigt, Rainer Bruggemann, Hagen Scherb, Ismet Cok, Karl-Werner Schramm

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In a recently performed monitoring project, 18 OCPs (Organochlorine pesticides) in paired samples of pine needles and human breast milk samples were analysed in different regions in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. The aim of our data evaluation approach is to find out whether there are conformities between the paired human breast milk and pine needle samples. An appropriate data analysis method to identify such conformities and differences is the discrete mathematical method named Hasse diagram technique. The software package used is the PyHasse software. It comprises several modules, which are of great support in the evaluation of environmental data. …

Immigrant Diversity And Host Country Acculturation In Leader-Member Dyads, Monica M. Sharif Jun 2014

Immigrant Diversity And Host Country Acculturation In Leader-Member Dyads, Monica M. Sharif

Open Access Dissertations

Leadership scholars have investigated the importance of leader-member dyads for several years. However, research has largely omitted the consideration of immigrant diversity with regards to leader-member relationships and outcomes in the organization. The US has experienced an influx of talented immigrants that are joining the workforce and, therefore, important to today’s economy. In a sample of two organizations, one based in South America, and another headquartered in Miami, Florida, I propose two models. One model examines the role of country of origin incongruence and LMX and the other examines the role of host country acculturation and LMX. Immigrants come from …

Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (Epfrs). 3. Free Versus Bound Hydroxyl Radicals In Epfr Aqueous Solutions, Lavrent Khachatryan, Cheri A. Mcferrin, Randall W. Hall, Barry Dellinger

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Additional experimental evidence is presented for in vitro generation of hydroxyl radicals because of redox cycling of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) produced after adsorption of 2-monochlorophenol at 230 °C (2-MCP-230) on copper oxide supported by silica, 5% Cu(II)O/silica (3.9% Cu). A chemical spin trapping agent, 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), in conjunction with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was employed. Experiments in spiked O17 water have shown that ∼15% of hydroxyl radicals formed as a result of redox cycling. This amount of hydroxyl radicals arises from an exogenous Fenton reaction and may stay either partially trapped on the surface …

Motor Cortex Electrical Stimulation Augments Sprouting Of The Corticospinal Tract And Promotes Recovery Of Motor Function, Jason B. Carmel, John H. Martin Jun 2014

Motor Cortex Electrical Stimulation Augments Sprouting Of The Corticospinal Tract And Promotes Recovery Of Motor Function, Jason B. Carmel, John H. Martin

Publications and Research

The corticospinal system—with its direct spinal pathway, the corticospinal tract (CST) – is the primary system for controlling voluntary movement. Our approach to CST repair after injury in mature animals was informed by our finding that activity drives establishment of connections with spinal cord circuits during postnatal development. After incomplete injury in maturity, spared CST circuits sprout, and partially restore lost function. Our approach harnesses activity to augment this injury-dependent CST sprouting and to promote function. Lesion of the medullary pyramid unilaterally eliminates all CST axons from one hemisphere and allows examination of CST sprouting from the unaffected hemisphere. We …

Background:  Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (sCEA) level might be an indicator of disease. Indeed, an elevated sCEA level is a prognostic factor in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. However, the genetic determinants of sCEA level in healthy and CRC population remains unclear. Thus we investigated the genetic markers associated with elevated serum sCEA level in these two populations and its clinical implications.

Methods and Findings:  Genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted in a cohort study with 4,346 healthy male adults using the Illumina Omni 1 M chip. Candidate SNPs associated with elevated sCEA levels were validated in 194 CRC patients on ABI …

Elaborate Visual And Acoustic Signals Evolve Independently In A Large, Phenotypically Diverse Radiation Of Songbirds, Nicholas A. Mason, Allison J. Shultz, Kevin J. Burns

Faculty Publications

The concept of a macroevolutionary trade-off among sexual signals has a storied history in evolutionary biology. Theory predicts that if multiple sexual signals are costly for males to produce or maintain and females prefer a single, sexually selected trait, then an inverse correlation between sexual signal elaborations is expected among species. However, empirical evidence for what has been termed the 'transfer hypothesis' is mixed, which may reflect different selective pressures among lineages, evolutionary covariates or methodological differences among studies. Here,we examine interspecific correlations between song and plumage elaboration in a phenotypically diverse, widespread radiation of songbirds, the tanagers. The tanagers …

Organizing A Student Poster Session In An Asee Section Conference, Steve Eugene Watkins, Les Kinsler, Julia L. Morse, Douglas R. Carroll

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Student poster sessions at conferences can be valuable experiences for undergraduate and graduate students and can enrich the conference program for all participants. Student poster presentations beyond the local campus can provide additional experience in professional communication (especially in preparing succinct abstracts and in effective visual design), can prepare students for future conference participations, and can facilitate student-faculty interaction. Several issues exist when including student poster sessions in engineering education conferences. How can the content of posters be related to an engineering education theme? How are communication principles of audience and purpose incorporated into the session guidelines and review process? …

Fire Activity And Severity In The Western Us Vary Along Proxy Gradients Representing Fuel Amount And Fuel Moisture, Sean A. Parks, Marc-Andrè Parisien, Carol Miller, Solomon Z. Dobrowski Jun 2014

Fire Activity And Severity In The Western Us Vary Along Proxy Gradients Representing Fuel Amount And Fuel Moisture, Sean A. Parks, Marc-Andrè Parisien, Carol Miller, Solomon Z. Dobrowski

Forest Management Faculty Publications

Numerous theoretical and empirical studies have shown that wildfire activity (e.g., area burned) at regional to global scales may be limited at the extremes of environmental gradients such as productivity or moisture. Fire activity, however, represents only one component of the fire regime, and no studies to date have characterized fire severity along such gradients. Given the importance of fire severity in dictating ecological response to fire, this is a considerable knowledge gap. For the western US, we quantify relationships between climate and the fire regime by empirically describing both fire activity and severity along two climatic water balance gradients, …

A Modified Weighted Holm Procedure For Multiple Comparisons, Jared Ray Wolf Jun 2014

A Modified Weighted Holm Procedure For Multiple Comparisons, Jared Ray Wolf

Student Theses and Dissertations

Multiplicity is a well established notion in statistics that arises when simultaneously testing n &ge2 individual hypotheses. To combat this issue, over time, numerous multiple comparison procedures have been developed. Such methods are relied upon heavily in confirmatory clinical trials, both in dose-finding and multiple-endpoint scenarios. The proposed procedure is a hybrid between the data-driven Weighted Holm procedure and the Fallback procedure which relies heavily on the a priori ordering of the hypotheses based on weights. Strong control of the familywise error rate is proven. Both general and previous clinical examples are performed utilizing this new method while comparing the …

The Role Of Calcium Transients In The Collective Migration Of Goldfish Epithelial Keratocytes, Chelsea E. Willet Jun 2014

The Role Of Calcium Transients In The Collective Migration Of Goldfish Epithelial Keratocytes, Chelsea E. Willet

Master's Theses

Collective migration is a critical biological process that involves the coordinated migration of a group of cells connected via adherens junctions. These cell-cell adhesions are regulated by intracellular and extracellular calcium, and require controlled turnover in order to maintain the structural integrity of migrating cell sheets. In single fish keratocytes, intracellular calcium signaling via stretch-activated calcium channels facilitates migration by regulating cytoskeletal contractility and cell-substratum adhesion turnover. The role of calcium signaling in collectively migrating keratocyte sheets remains unknown. In this study, we investigate the effects of modulating the frequency of calcium transients in goldfish keratocyte sheets, using EGTA and …
