Multilayer Minichannel Heat Sinks: The Effect Of Porosity Scaling On Pressure Drop, Arun K. Karunanithi,, Fatemeh Hassanipour

5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry

Previous studies have shown that stacked multi-layer mini-channels heat sinks with square or circular channels have advantages over traditional single layered channels in terms of both pressure drop and thermal resistance. In this work, porous media is used in the multi-layered stacked mini-channels instead of square or rectangular channels and the effect of the same on pressure drop and thermal perfor- mance is studied. Porosity scaling is done between the lay- ers of porous media and is compared with unscaled stacked multilayer channel. Porosity scaling allows the porosity to vary from one layer to the next layer and could result …

Numerical Simulation Of 3-D Free Convection In Porous Media Due To Combined Surface Forced Convection And Internal Heat Generation, Kevin Anderson, Maryann Shafahi, Shawn Mcgann, Watit Pakdee

5th International Conference on Porous Media and Their Applications in Science, Engineering and Industry

A three-dimensional fluid-saturated porous medium model for natural convective flow has been developed, taking into account inertial and viscous forces within the fluid. The model consists of a cube with a top surface partially exposed to a steady, uniform convective heat flux and the entire domain to uniform internal heat generation. The differential equations for the Brinkman-extended Darcy model were formulated and non-dimensionalized, with numerical solutions obtained using the Galerkin finite element method. The results have been validated by comparison with previously published reports. It has been observed that the applied boundary conditions result in a central toroidal vortex driven …

Traveling Wave Solutions To The Allen-Cahn Equations With Fractional Laplacians, Mingfeng Zhao Jun 2014

Traveling Wave Solutions To The Allen-Cahn Equations With Fractional Laplacians, Mingfeng Zhao

Doctoral Dissertations

We show the existence of traveling wave solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation with fractional Laplacians. A key ingredient is the estimation of the traveling speed of traveling wave solutions. In the meantime, we prove some qualitative properties of the solution, e.g., monotonicity, polynomial decays at infinity, Hamiltonian identity and Modica type estimates, and non-degeneracy. Moreover, we prove that for any balanced bistable nonlinearity, the traveling speeds linearly depend on the perturbation parameters.

Ontosoar: Using Language To Find Genealogy Facts, Peter Lindes

Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to have an automated system that can read family history books or other historical texts and extract as many genealogy facts as possible from them. Embley and others have applied traditional information extraction techniques to this problem in a system called OntoES with a reasonable amount of success. In parallel much linguistic theory has been developed in the past decades, and Lonsdale and others have built computational embodiments of some of these theories using Soar. In this thesis we introduce a system called OntoSoar which combines the Link Grammar Parser using a grammar customized for family …

Variations in the world's ocean heat storage and its associated volume changes are a key factor to gauge global warming and to assess the earth's energy and sea level budget. Estimating global ocean heat content (GOHC) and global steric sea level (GSSL) with temperature/salinity data from the Argo network reveals a positive change of 0.5 ± 0.1 W m−2 (applied to the surface area of the ocean) and 0.5 ± 0.1 mm year−1 during the years 2005 to 2012, averaged between 60° S and 60° N and the 10–1500 m depth layer. In this study, we present an …

In cattle, conceptus-maternal interactions are critical for the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. A major component of this early interaction involves the transport of nutrients and secretion of key molecules by uterine epithelial cells to help support conceptus development during the peri-implantation period of pregnancy. Objectives were to: 1) analyze temporal changes in the amino acid (AA) content of uterine luminal fluid (ULF) during the bovine estrous cycle; 2) understand conceptus-induced alterations in AA content; 3) determine expression of AA transporters in the endometrium and conceptus; and 4) determine how these transporters are modulated by (Progesterone) P4. Concentrations of aspartic …

Laser-Induced Fluorescence Imaging Of Calcium And Barium Ion Beams In The Second Vacuum Stage Of A Commercial Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, Alisa Jane Edmund Jun 2014

Laser-Induced Fluorescence Imaging Of Calcium And Barium Ion Beams In The Second Vacuum Stage Of A Commercial Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, Alisa Jane Edmund

Theses and Dissertations

Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometers (ICP-MS) have become the workhorses of many analytical labs over the past few decades. Despite the instruments' high sensitivities and low detection limits there is still a demand for improvements in several aspects of their performance. One area of improvement is in the understanding of "space charge effects" Space charge effects are classified as problems associated with the ion beam. Problems are created when the mutual repulsions of the ions make consistent focusing of the ion beam difficult. This is particularly problematic with samples containing a low concentration analyte contained within a high salt solution matrix, …

Application Of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Based Metabolomics To Study The Central Metabolism Of Staphylococci, Bo Zhang Jun 2014

Application Of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Based Metabolomics To Study The Central Metabolism Of Staphylococci, Bo Zhang

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Metabolomics studies the collection of small molecules (metabolites) involved in enzymatically catalyzed reactions, cell signaling and cellular structure. Perturbations in metabolite concentrations have been used to reflect the activity of corresponding enzymes or proteins. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a well-known approach for the structure determination of biological macromolecules. Alternatively, NMR has recently been established as a valuable tool of metabolomics, in which NMR spectral signals correlate small molecules with cellular activities. This has been accomplished through the chemometric analysis of high-throughput one dimensional 1H spectra (metabolic fingerprinting) and quantitative metabolite identification based on two dimensional 1H, …

Chemically Modified Proteins As Highly Stable Building Blocks For Functional Bionanomaterials, Marc J. Novak Jun 2014

Chemically Modified Proteins As Highly Stable Building Blocks For Functional Bionanomaterials, Marc J. Novak

Master's Theses

Enzymes are key molecular machines that catalyze biologically important chemical reactions. The use of these powerful catalysts has recently been investigated for more industrial applications such as bio-fuel cells, glucose sensors, and biomedical engineering purposes. The main limiting factor of these versatile macromolecules is the stability concerns under conditions of elevated temperature or unfavorable pH. Chemical modification via charge manipulation of one of the most widely used enzymes in industrial research, glucose oxidase, is conducted in this report to stabilize the functional structure and improve the catalytic longevity under thermally taxing conditions. Further enhancement in solution stability is achieved by …

Necessary And Sufficient Conditions For State-Space Network Realization, Philip E. Paré Jr. Jun 2014

Necessary And Sufficient Conditions For State-Space Network Realization, Philip E. Paré Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the formulation and solution of a new problem in systems and control theory, called the Network Realization Problem. Its relationship to other problems, such as State Realization and Structural Identifiability, is shown. The motivation for this work is the desire to completely quantify the conditions for transitioning between different mathematical representations of linear time-invariant systems. The solution to this problem is useful for theorists because it lays a foundation for quantifying the information cost of identifying a system's complete network structure from the transfer function.

Net photosynthesis is the largest single flux in the global carbon cycle, but controls over its variability are poorly understood because there is no direct way of measuring it at the ecosystem scale. We report observations of ecosystem carbonyl sulfide (COS) and CO2 fluxes that resolve key gaps in an emerging framework for using concurrent COS and CO2 measurements to quantify terrestrial gross primary productivity. At a wheat field in Oklahoma we found that in the peak growing season the flux-weighted leaf relative uptake of COS and CO2 during photosynthesis was 1.3, at the lower end of …

Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (Gsea) Of Toxoplasma Gondii Expression Datasets Links Cell Cycle Progression And The Bradyzoite Developmental Program, Matthew Mcknight Croken, Weigang Qiu, Michael W. White, Kami Kim Jun 2014

Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (Gsea) Of Toxoplasma Gondii Expression Datasets Links Cell Cycle Progression And The Bradyzoite Developmental Program, Matthew Mcknight Croken, Weigang Qiu, Michael W. White, Kami Kim

Publications and Research

Background Large amounts of microarray expression data have been generated for the Apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii in an effort to identify genes critical for virulence or developmental transitions. However, researchers’ ability to analyze this data is limited by the large number of unannotated genes, including many that appear to be conserved hypothetical proteins restricted to Apicomplexa. Further, differential expression of individual genes is not always informative and often relies on investigators to draw big-picture inferences without the benefit of context. We hypothesized that customization of gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) to T. gondii would enable us to rigorously test whether …

Early Developmental Impacts On Male Traits And Female Preference In Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia Guttata), Martyna Boruta Jun 2014

Early Developmental Impacts On Male Traits And Female Preference In Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia Guttata), Martyna Boruta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Some male sexually selected traits are sensitive to stressors early in life and provide females with information to discriminate among males with different developmental experiences. Moreover, female early life experiences could also impact which males they choose. Females might either choose honest traits indicative of male quality, no matter their own experiences, or they might choose mates to match or compensate for their own experiences. To determine how developmental stressors alter male sexually-selected traits and female preference thereof, I exposed zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata, ZEFI) to i) lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an immunogenic, Gram-negative bacterial component, ii) corticosterone (CORT), an avian stress …

Topological Data Analysis Of Properties Of Four-Regular Rigid Vertex Graphs, Grant Mcneil Conine

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Homologous DNA recombination and rearrangement has been modeled with a class of four-regular rigid vertex graphs called assembly graphs which can also be represented by double occurrence words. Various invariants have been suggested for these graphs, some based on the structure of the graphs, and some biologically motivated.

In this thesis we use a novel method of data analysis based on a technique known as partial-clustering analysis and an algorithm known as Mapper to examine the relationships between these invariants. We introduce some of the basic machinery of topological data analysis, including the construction of simplicial complexes on a data …

From Co2 To Cell: Energetic Expense Of Creating Biomass Using The Calvin-Benson-Bassham And Reductive Citric Acid Cycles Based On Genomic Data, Mary Ann Mangiapia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

The ubiquity of the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle (CBB) amongst autotrophic organisms suggests that it provides an advantage over a wide range of environmental conditions. However, in some habitats, such as hydrothermal vents, the reductive citric acid cycle (rCAC) is an equally predominant carbon fixation pathway. It has been suggested that the CBB cycle poses a disadvantage under certain circumstances due to being more energetically demanding compared to other carbon fixation pathways. The purpose of this study was to compare the relative metabolic cost of cell biosynthesis by an autotrophic cell using either the CBB cycle or the rCAC. For both …
