A Deleuzian Reading Of The Edsa Revolutions And The Possibility Of Becoming-Revolutionary Today, Raniel Sm. Reyes
A Deleuzian Reading Of The Edsa Revolutions And The Possibility Of Becoming-Revolutionary Today, Raniel Sm. Reyes
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This paper presents a Deleuzian re-thinking of the three EDSA Revolutions in the Philippines. Its frame is limited to contemporary and critical studies found in books, journals, and newspapers. Initially, I elucidate the nature of 1986 EDSA I Revolution, to be followed by an articulation of the concepts of assemblage and difference for a re-configuration of the 1986 revolution. I highlight and explain how the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) transfigured into an arena of collective and dynamic action of various assemblagic relations. The rhizomic interaction of heterogeneous forces in the said highway undeniably exterminated the privileging of numerous traditional …
The Foraging Behaviors And Decision-Making Strategies Of Overwintering Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis) And American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius) In Relation To Prey Density And Patch-Site Characteristics In Northeastern Arkansas, Melissa Marie Bobowski
Student Theses and Dissertations
I observed the wintering foraging behaviors of Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) and American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) to determine the efficiency of their foraging strategies in relation to prey density and patch-site characteristics. The three cover-types (i.e., short rice stubble, soybean stubble, and fallow areas and roadsides) differed in densities of small mammals and vegetation cover. Cover-type was the most important predictor for the probability of making an attempt at prey for both species with the greatest probability at attempting was in fallow roadsides. Perch-type only influenced the probability of being successful at capturing a prey item for Red-tailed hawks with …

Towards A Human-Centered Theory And Practice Of The Firm: Presenting The Humanistic Paradigm Of Business And Management, Michael Pirson, Ernst Von Kimakowitz
Towards A Human-Centered Theory And Practice Of The Firm: Presenting The Humanistic Paradigm Of Business And Management, Michael Pirson, Ernst Von Kimakowitz
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
In this article, we review the challenges to the current economic system and then proceed by presenting two competing paradigms—the economistic and humanistic paradigms of business. We then develop the consequences of the humanistic view for the theory and practice of the firm with regard to global sustainability. We examine paradigmatic differences regarding business strategy, governance structures, leadership styles, and organizational culture, and illustrate them based on global case examples. In this manner, we contribute to the discussion of alternative theories for global sustainability, centering the debate on authentic human needs and the consequences of such for management theory.
The Impact Of Parentification On Depression Moderated By Self-Care: A Multiple Group Analysis By Gender For South Korea And The U.S., Sunnie Giles
Theses and Dissertations
Parentification, the process of role reversal between parent and child, has long-term deleterious consequences. Using 500 men and 501 women, ranging from 18 years to 55 years old, residing in Korea and the U.S., this study examined the relationship of parentification experienced during childhood and depression in adulthood. The moderating impact of gender and self-care was examined in both the Korean and U.S. samples. Multiple-group analysis showed that the relationship between parentification and depression was statistically significant in all groups (U.S., Korean, male, and female), and self-care was negatively linked to depression. However, self-care did not moderate the relationship between …

Preliminary Test Of A Real-Time, Interactive Silent Speech Interface Based On Electromagnetic Articulograph, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
A silent speech interface (SSI) maps articulatory movement data to speech output. Although still in experimental stages, silent speech interfaces hold significant potential for facilitating oral communication in persons after laryngectomy or with other severe voice impairments. Despite the recent efforts on silent speech recognition algorithm development using offline data analysis, online test of SSIs have rarely been conducted. In this paper, we present a preliminary, online test of a real-time, interactive SSI based on electromagnetic motion tracking. The SSI played back synthesized speech sounds in response to the user’s tongue and lip movements. Three English talkers participated in this …
Dissociative Symptoms In Adolescent Girls: Contextual Determinants And Behavioral Outcomes, Kate P. Zona
Dissociative Symptoms In Adolescent Girls: Contextual Determinants And Behavioral Outcomes, Kate P. Zona
Doctoral Dissertations
Dissociative symptoms in adolescents have not been widely studied. Existing research suggests that dissociation is important in understanding vulnerability for psychopathology and high-risk behavior during adolescence, especially among girls exposed to potentially traumatic events. Using a diverse, low-income sample of 13- to 17-year-old girls (N=194), this study examined: 1) psychometric properties of the Adolescent Dissociative Experiences Scale (A-DES; Armstrong et al., 1997); 2) associations between dissociative symptoms and exposure to traumatic events, relational factors, and racial/ethnic/cultural factors, including potential moderating effects of contextual variables on the relationship between trauma exposure and dissociation; and 3) whether dissociation predicted risky behavior, above and …

Undergraduate Major And Locus Of Control, Nicole Napowanetz
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this investigation were to further examine whether there was a relationship between gender and a locus of control orientation, as well does a specified major, in this case being STEM-related majors, constitute a higher internal locus of control? A review of the present literature demonstrates a lack of research in regards to undergraduate major and locus of control orientation. The need for further understanding in regards to the gender gap within STEM-related majors is established. To investigate further, data was collected via undergraduate students' completion of Rotter's Locus of Control I-E scale and a brief demographics questionnaire, …
Salix V. Usfs: When Is Agency Consultation Required Under The Esa?, Michelle Tafoya
Salix V. Usfs: When Is Agency Consultation Required Under The Esa?, Michelle Tafoya
Montana Law Review Online
Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) has been called the “heart of the ESA” because it requires interagency consultation before undertaking actions that may harm endangered species. In Salix v. United States Forest Service, the United States District Court held the United States Forest Service (USFS) had to reinitiate consultation on a management plan amendment after the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) belatedly designated critical habitat for the Canada lynx. On appeal, the Ninth Circuit will address two other issues common to ESA challenges, standing and injunctive relief, in addition to the § 7 consultation requirement.
The Effects Of U.S. Middle East Foreign Policy On American Muslims: A Case Study Of Muslims In Tampa Bay, Mark G. Grzegorzewski
The Effects Of U.S. Middle East Foreign Policy On American Muslims: A Case Study Of Muslims In Tampa Bay, Mark G. Grzegorzewski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over the past thirteen years the United States has used military force against three different Muslim-majority nations. These conflicts have lead to the deaths of many Muslims, including many innocent civilians. Meanwhile, American Muslims have become conflicted about their identities as Muslims and Americans. However, this does not mean that they have become a fifth column within America. What it does mean is that they have felt anguish regarding the torment of their religious brethren, while at the same time retaining their American identity. Post-9/11, Muslim American groups have acknowledged their place in the racial ordering of America. Muslim Americans …

Inter-Organizational Social Network Information Systems: Diagnosing And Design, Matthew T. Mullarkey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While IS research into on-line Inter-Personal (IP) Social Networks (SN) is highly visible, there has been surprisingly little focus on the use of on-line social networks for Inter-Organizational (IO) communications, interactions, and goal achievement. We explore the issues and challenges facing organizations in their design and use of inter-organizational social network information systems (IO SNIS). Artifact design principles are drawn from a new and insightful model that contrasts the advantages of existing innovative inter-personal (IP) SNIS artifacts with Social Network Theory on differences between IP and IO Social Networks. This research extends the existing streams of IS social networking research …
The Problems And Potentials In Haunted Maternal Horror Narratives, Sarah Laura Novak
The Problems And Potentials In Haunted Maternal Horror Narratives, Sarah Laura Novak
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will examine the representation of motherhood in horror cinema in order to discuss the problems and potentials of repeated domestic traditions. While maternal horror narratives impose gender roles based on heterosexual hegemonic biases, some of these films also examine the feminine experience and criticize the patriarchal institutional structures that affect domesticity and femininity. If we discuss these promising features, we can build on the implied trajectories, and engender more representation of marginalized experience in order to seek out new methods of cultural stabilization and unity. This proposal relies on Jacques Derrida's theory of hauntology, which addresses past and …

More To Love: Obesity Histories And Romantic Relationships In The Transition To Adulthood, Hilary Morgan Dotson
More To Love: Obesity Histories And Romantic Relationships In The Transition To Adulthood, Hilary Morgan Dotson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous research suggests that obesity can be stigmatizing in interpersonal relationships, including romantic relationships. Timing of obesity and weight stability are also especially important. The negative effects of obesity on interpersonal relationships appear most salient in women and Whites, while men and racial/ethnic minorities appear to experience fewer negative consequences from obesity in their relationships, suggesting that an intersectional lens is necessary in studies on the long-term effects of obesity on interpersonal relationships. In this dissertation, I employ an intersectional lens to understand how histories of obesity, gender, and racial/ethnic identity work together to influence three aspects of romantic relationships …

In omic research, such as genome wide association studies, researchers seek to repeat their results in other datasets to reduce false positive findings and thus provide evidence for the existence of true associations. Unfortunately this standard validation approach cannot completely eliminate false positive conclusions, and it can also mask many true associations that might otherwise advance our understanding of pathology. These issues beg the question: How can we increase the amount of knowledge gained from high throughput genetic data? To address this challenge, we present an approach that complements standard statistical validation methods by drawing attention to both potential false …
A Multi-Proxy Approach To Understanding Abrupt Climate Change And Laurentide Ice Sheet Melting History Based On Gulf Of Mexico Sediments, Clare Carlisle Williams
A Multi-Proxy Approach To Understanding Abrupt Climate Change And Laurentide Ice Sheet Melting History Based On Gulf Of Mexico Sediments, Clare Carlisle Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
During the last deglaciation (ca. 24-10 ka thousand years ago (ka)), the North American Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) was a major source of meltwater to the Arctic Ocean, North Atlantic Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), and it is hypothesized that meltwater routing played an important role in regulating Late Quaternary millennial-scale climate variability, via its influence on Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). For example, the meltwater routing hypothesis predicts that a rerouting of meltwater from the GOM to the North Atlantic and/or Arctic Oceans resulted in a decrease of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation and subsequent cooling …

Horseradish Peroxidase-Attapulgite Clay Nanocomposites: Fabrication And Application To Sensing The Extracellular H2O2 Released From Cells, Ping Wu, Chen-Xin Cai
Journal of Electrochemistry
The nanostructured attapulgite clay was employed as a support matrix for immobilizing horseradish peroxidase (HRP). FTIR and electrochemical methods demonstrated that HRP had been effectively assembled on attapulgite surface with the formation of HRP-attapulgite nanocomposites. The HRP-attapulgite hybrid was deposited on the glassy carbon (GC) electrode forming the HRP-attapulgite/GC electrode. Cyclic voltammetric results showed a pair of well-defined redox peaks, which were ascribed to direct electron transfer (DET) of HRP, with the formal potential E0′ = -335 mV (vs. SCE) in the phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The dependence of E0′ on solution pH indicated …

Effects Of Oxygen Coverage And Hydrated Proton Model On The Dft Calculation Of Oxygen Reduction Pathways On The Pt(111) Surface, Li-Hui Ou, Sheng-Li Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
DFT calculation is used to study various possible steps in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), including the adsorption and dissociation process of O2 and the serial protonation process of dissociated products to form H2O on the Pt(111) surface. By using slabs of different sizes, and different numbers of pre-adsorbed oxygen atoms, the coverage effects on the pathways are investigated. The calculated results using different hydrated proton models are also compared. It is shown that the initial step of the ORR is the formation of a protonated end-on chemisorbed state of OOH*, which can transform to an unprotonated …
