Validity And Reliability Of A Mini Situational Judgment Test (Sjt) For Pilots, Lu Shi
Validity And Reliability Of A Mini Situational Judgment Test (Sjt) For Pilots, Lu Shi
Theses and Dissertations
The situational judgment test (SJT) was developed by Hunter (2002) to test pilot judgment. SJT is very useful. However, this test takes too long for participants to complete. A mini SJT was developed with shortened questions. The purpose of this research was to determine the reliability and validity of mini SJT comprised of 16 of the original 51 questions. Validity and reliability were the two key elements in psychometrics. Face validity was used as a method to measure validity. Reliability was determined by Cronbach's Alpha, the correlation of split half and even odd, and Pearson s correlation of test retest. …
Human Influences On Anuran Distribution Changes In The Southeastern U.S.A., Michelle Diane Luce
Human Influences On Anuran Distribution Changes In The Southeastern U.S.A., Michelle Diane Luce
Theses and Dissertations
As human populations continue to expand and grow, ecosystems and the species that inhabit them face ever-increasing stress. To conserve these ecosystems, scientists use indicator species to try to measure the impact of human-induced pressures on the environment. Anurans are exceptional indicator species because they are often the first vertebrates to respond to the direct and indirect effects of land use by humans. Sparse historical data have made it difficult to map the ‘natural’ distribution of many species and, therefore, to map any changes in distribution range as a result of human expansion. This study sought to address the lack …

Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate Concentration Varies Daily, Weekly And Seasonally In Pittsburg's Waste Water: It Is Possible That The College Student Population Influences The Variation, Crawford County, Kansas., Balsam Abdulaziz Alessa
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) is a biodegradable surfactant commonly used industrially and domestically. Concentrations had never been examined in Pittsburg’s Wastewater Treatment Plant because the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit does not specify any standard for LAS in Pittsburg's wastewater. This study monitored influent and effluent LAS concentrations three times per day, every day for 12 weeks (Feb 24 – May 18, 2014). Concentrations were determined by the Methylene Blue Active Substances method. There was very little variation in the effluent concentrations which were one tenth of those in the influent. LAS concentrations in influent were highly variable by …

Leucine Zipper Interacts Promiscuously? Analysis Of Leucine Zipper Specificity In The C-Protein Family., Evelyn Rebecca Yambay-Tilman
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein C is ubiquitous in vertebrates, and exists as two alternatively spliced isoforms, hnRNP C1 and hnRNP C2 (hnRNP C). hnRNP C has been associated with pre-mRNA packaging, pre-mRNA, splicing, mRNA stability, internal ribosome entry site medicated translation, and has even been reported to be an integral component of the telomerase enzyme. Two proteins, hRaly and hRalyl, exhibit a great deal of primary sequence similarity with the C proteins and also conserve structural and functional motifs that have been identified in hnRNP C. A leucine zipper motif has been shown to be the oligomerization domain of hnRNP C …

A floristic survey was conducted in Elk City State Park in Montgomery County, Kansas in order to accomplish three goals; (1) to document the vascular plant species present in Elk City State Park, (2) to assess the floristic quality of the area and (3) to suggest appropriate management strategies for the restoration or reconstruction of the natural areas within the study site.
The floristic survey was conducted over the course of two growing seasons starting in spring of 2011 and continuing through fall of 2012. A total of 259 species were identified representing 191 genera in 68 plant families. Floristic …
The Effect Of Meritocratic Worldviews On Mental Illness Stigma, Andrew Newsom
The Effect Of Meritocratic Worldviews On Mental Illness Stigma, Andrew Newsom
Dissertations (1934 -)
Mental illness stigma is an ongoing barrier to the treatment of individuals experiencing psychiatric distress. Many individuals who need mental health services avoid treatment due to fear and shame. Understanding the determinants of mental illness stigma is an important step toward increasing treatment seeking and effectiveness. One meritocratic worldview (The Protestant Work Ethic or the belief that hard work, determination, and responsibility lead to positive outcomes) has been consistently shown to be related to mental illness stigma. The present study examines the connection between the Protestant Work Ethic (PWE) and attitudes toward mental illness. A sample of Marquette University students …
Cross-Bridge Mechanisms Of Skeletal Muscle Fatigue: Effects Of Hydrogen Ion, Inorganic Phosphate, And Age, Cassandra Rae Nelson
Cross-Bridge Mechanisms Of Skeletal Muscle Fatigue: Effects Of Hydrogen Ion, Inorganic Phosphate, And Age, Cassandra Rae Nelson
Dissertations (1934 -)
Intense muscle contraction induces high rates of glycolysis and ATP hydrolysis with resulting increases in inorganic phosphate (Pi) and H+, factors thought to induce fatigue by interfering with steps in the cross-bridge cycle. Force inhibition is less at physiological temperatures; thus the role of low pH in fatigue has been questioned. Effects of pH 6.2 and collective effects with 30 mM Pi on the pCa-force relationship were assessed in skinned fast and slow rat skeletal muscle fibers at low (15°C) and near-physiological temperatures (30°C). At Ca2+ levels characteristic of fatigue, low pH significantly depressed force at both temperatures and in …

Simple Fall Criteria For Mems Sensors: Data Analysis And Sensor Concept, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim, Mohammad I. Younis
Simple Fall Criteria For Mems Sensors: Data Analysis And Sensor Concept, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim, Mohammad I. Younis
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
This paper presents a new and simple fall detection concept based on detailed experimental data of human falling and the activities of daily living (ADLs). Establishing appropriate fall algorithms compatible with MEMS sensors requires detailed data on falls and ADLs that indicate clearly the variations of the kinematics at the possible sensor node location on the human body, such as hip, head, and chest. Currently, there is a lack of data on the exact direction and magnitude of each acceleration component associated with these node locations. This is crucial for MEMS structures, which have inertia elements very close to the …
American Blood: Who Is Counting And For What?, Gerald Torres
American Blood: Who Is Counting And For What?, Gerald Torres
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
When thinking about "who counts," I initially titled this Essay: "Who is Counting and for What?" I wanted to highlight the role that power necessarily plays in the very asking of the question. It presumes a perspective, and interrogating that perspective can only occur if the second part of the question is answered. Because race has always played a critical role in our culture from the very beginning, I wanted to explore one of the many ways it has been deployed to justify a particular expression of power. The story virtually every American learns is the story of the inevitable …
Potential Susceptibility Of Canna Flaccida And Two Canna Hybrids To Five Species Of Phytophthora, Kristin Van Kampen
Potential Susceptibility Of Canna Flaccida And Two Canna Hybrids To Five Species Of Phytophthora, Kristin Van Kampen

The costs and need for clean water are increasing for greenhouse, nursery, and agricultural businesses. Runoff from irrigated agriculture and specialty crops also can take a toll on the surrounding environment, because irrigation runoff water can contain high amounts of nutrients, contaminants, and plant pathogens. To assuage the pollution contributed to runoff water and reduce the overall volume of water used, nurseries are starting to reuse irrigation runoff water. For this to be possible, the water first should be treated before reuse. Constructed wetlands are a biological treatment option that employs vegetation to collect, filter, and store runoff water. Some …

Understanding the interactions among microbial communities, plant communities and soil properties following deforestation could provide insights into the long-term effects of land-use change on ecosystem functions, and may help identify approaches that promote the recovery of degraded sites. We combined high-throughput sequencing of fungal rDNA and molecular barcoding of plant roots to estimate fungal and plant community composition in soil sampled across a chronosequence of deforestation. We found significant effects of land-use change on fungal community composition, which was more closely correlated to plant community composition than to changes in soil properties or geographic distance, providing evidence for strong links …
The Social Construction And Broaden-Build Effects Of Appreciation, Recognition, And Reward At Work As Portrayed In Four Contemporary Films, Andrew Gavin Leach
The Social Construction And Broaden-Build Effects Of Appreciation, Recognition, And Reward At Work As Portrayed In Four Contemporary Films, Andrew Gavin Leach
Communication ETDs
Many employees feel underappreciated, unrecognized, and undervalued in todays corporate, white collar environment (Herman& Dasborough, 2008; Ariani, D. W. 2013). Global economic crises, rising housing prices and high unemployment have all contributed to the prevailing thought that it an employee should just be happy with having a job. However, many organizations have found that evoking positive emotion in the workplace is a win-win situation for them and their employees (Lutgen-Sandvik, Riforgiate & Fletcher, 2009). In order to investigate what is enacted to produce positivity in the workplace, this project applied content analysis to four commercial film dated 2004 to 2013. …

A Content Analysis Spanning 30 Years Of Mental Health Communication Scholarship, Camille Velarde
Communication ETDs
Currently, the communication research concerning mental health is sporadic, unorganized, and disintegrated. Previous research has not looked at organizing the literature through content analysis. To address this gap in the literature, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the current state of mental health communication research. This thesis has six key objectives: (1) systematically review the communication literature regarding mental health communication and identify current trends and future areas for research; (2) identify the aspects or topics regarding mental health communication in published research; (3) identify the theoretical underpinnings of mental health communication research; (4) …
Use Of Macroinvertebrates In Bioassessment Of Land Use And Water Quality In Northern Mongolia, Oyunchuluun Yadamsuren
Use Of Macroinvertebrates In Bioassessment Of Land Use And Water Quality In Northern Mongolia, Oyunchuluun Yadamsuren
All Dissertations
Land-use practices in Mongolia lead to habitat degradation and consequently affect the structure and function of biological communities. There is no accepted bioassessment technique for determining the ecological consequences of habitat degradation on biological communities and water quality in Mongolia, such that a monitoring and management program suitable for Mongolia is sorely needed. Both a trait-based approach and the North American Rapid Bioassessment Protocol (RBP) metrics were tested with macroinvertebrates to determine the performance and applicability of these approaches for predicting general ecological responses of freshwater and terrestrial communities to habitat variation due to overgrazing and mining in northern Mongolian …
The Prediction Of B-Cell Epitope Via Biostatistical And Bioinformatic Methodology And Applications, Bo Yao
The Prediction Of B-Cell Epitope Via Biostatistical And Bioinformatic Methodology And Applications, Bo Yao
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
By creating antibodies against antigens, B-cells, also named B-lymphocytes, play an important role in the immune system to fight against foreign invasion to the host body. Within the antigen specific to a certain B-cell antibody, the sections recognized and bound by antibody are called B-cell epitopes. As antigenic determinants, B-cell epitope identification is of vital importance in many immunological processes, such as vaccine design, immunodiagnostic tests, and antibody production. Towards this goal, biologists and immunologists have applied a variety of methods to identify B-cell epitopes through both experiments and bioinformatic predictions.
There are two kinds of B-cell epitopes: linear (continuous) …
