Managing Swine Manure In Double-Crop Soybean, Donald Joseph Graper
Managing Swine Manure In Double-Crop Soybean, Donald Joseph Graper
Open Access Theses
Animal production, especially swine (Sus scrofa domesticus ) and poultry, has increased in the United States prompting the need to manage the larger volume of manure beyond land applications to supply nitrogen (N) for corn (Zea mays ) production. Applying swine manure to soybean (Glycine max ) has been shown to increase grain yield due to N supply. The goal of this research was to determine if swine manure applications to double-crop soybean following wheat can limit manure N loading to the soil by extending management options, increase soybean biomass and grain production, and increase N removal …
Standardizing The Collection And Measurement Of Glucose In Exhaled Breath And Its Relationship To Blood Glucose Concentrations, Mark Hamilton
Standardizing The Collection And Measurement Of Glucose In Exhaled Breath And Its Relationship To Blood Glucose Concentrations, Mark Hamilton
Open Access Theses
Blood glucose level control (glycemic control) is crucial in diabetes. Limitations in current commercially available monitoring devices include causing patient pain leading to poor blood glucose level management. The development of a non-invasive measurement system may lead to improved patient glycemic control, reducing unwanted side-effects and complications of poor blood glucose level maintenance.
This work explores the use of glucose within exhaled breath in attempt to establish an indirect method of blood glucose level measurement. Specifically, exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is examined. A breath condensing unit was designed to measure the temperature of the system, flow rate, volume of expired …
Variation In Round Goby Feeding Interactions In Near-Shore Lake Michigan Based On Three Trophic Indicators, Michael Lee Henebry
Variation In Round Goby Feeding Interactions In Near-Shore Lake Michigan Based On Three Trophic Indicators, Michael Lee Henebry
Open Access Theses
Understanding trophic interactions of non-native species is key to elucidating their potential ecological role in newly-invaded ecosystems. The Great Lakes region has long been characterized by a high rate of invasive species establishment. Round Goby (Neogobius melanostomus ) were first detected in Lake Michigan in 1994, and have since increased dramatically in abundance. While past studies of Round Goby in Lake Michigan have primarily focused on specific regions and habitats, Lake Michigan is a large, diverse system and Round Goby trophic interactions may vary across regions and over time. During May, July, and September 2010-2011, we collected Round Goby …
Price Impacts Of Increased Peruvian Table Grape Supply, Jacob W. Iest
Price Impacts Of Increased Peruvian Table Grape Supply, Jacob W. Iest
Open Access Theses
In the last decade, Peru has begun to structure its economy and complete infrastructure projects to promote agricultural export growth. Bolstered by the signing of the Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA) with the U.S., table grape production has increased significantly since 2006. Peru has a climatic advantage for a quality harvest from November to March, which overlaps the end of the U.S. growing season. With this supply increase expected to continue, U.S. producers and marketers question the effect Peru will have on "late-season" table grape prices in North America.
This thesis is a study of the effects of an increase …

The Role Of A University Archives In Producing A History Of A Core Curriculum, Laura M. Sinclair, Anne A. Salter
The Role Of A University Archives In Producing A History Of A Core Curriculum, Laura M. Sinclair, Anne A. Salter
Georgia Library Quarterly
During an annual alumni weekend celebration, librarians at a liberal arts college rely heavily on the university’s archival collection to produce a robust exhibit on the university’s history. The 2014 exhibit focused on the unique academic program, known as the Core Curriculum. The history produced for this exhibit depended on documents from the 1940s to the 1990s, including university publications, papers, and project reports created by faculty members. Starting with one publication, The Oglethorpe Book, the variations on and reactions to this sole document provide a paper trail of historical significance in defining and redefining a college core program. The …
Synthesis And Dna-Binding Studies With Two Stericallyfriendly Porphyrin Frameworks, Srijana Ghimire
Synthesis And Dna-Binding Studies With Two Stericallyfriendly Porphyrin Frameworks, Srijana Ghimire
Open Access Dissertations
Peripheral substituents on cationic porphyrins play a significant role during binding with DNA hosts. Possible applications of these systems in photodynamic therapy as well as in anti-bacterial and anti-cancer therapies motivate the binding studies. For characterizing DNA binding motifs different methods are useful including absorption, emission, and circular dichroism spectroscopies, as well as viscometry and X-ray crystallography. With the classic H2 T4 porphyrin, or 5,10,15,20-tetra(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin, the mode of binding varies with the base composition of the DNA host. The porphyrin binds adenine-thymine rich sequences externally whereas intercalation occurs in guanine-cytosine rich sequences. The McMillin group has made some …

Energy Efficient Hybrid Computing Systems Using Spin Devices, Mrigank Sharad
Open Access Dissertations
Emerging spin-devices like magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ's), spin-valves and domain wall magnets (DWM) have opened new avenues for spin-based logic design. This work explored potential computing applications which can exploit such devices for higher energy-efficiency and performance. The proposed applications involve hybrid design schemes, where charge-based devices supplement the spin-devices, to gain large benefits at the system level. As an example, lateral spin valves (LSV) involve switching of nanomagnets using spin-polarized current injection through a metallic channel such as Cu. Such spin-torque based devices possess several interesting properties that can be exploited for ultra-low power computation. Analog characteristic of spin …

Improving energy efficiency, productivity, safety, and comfort of mobile machines is of utmost priority to original equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers given the escalating fuel prices and increased awareness to the environment and workplace hazards. A major breakthrough in the realm of high power motion control is pump displacement controlled (DC) actuation, which does away with hydraulic valves for motion control and uses a variable displacement pump as both a flow source and final control element, thus eliminating throttling losses associated with hydraulic control valves. This work deals with researching and implementing DC technology for realizing the steering function of …
Regulating Water And War In Iraq: A Dangerous Dark Side Of New Governance, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell, Patricia Hania
Regulating Water And War In Iraq: A Dangerous Dark Side Of New Governance, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell, Patricia Hania
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
In the legal scholarship, the 'new governance' mode of governance advances an administrative arrangement where decision-making is shared amongst a range of actors, both public and private. The flexible, responsive, and collaborative governance orientation is intended to counter the ill effects of a coercive, top-down, state-centric, command-and-control approach to governance. Critics contend the new governance framework can displace the interests of local communities, disempower individuals, and dislodge basic human rights. The U.S. military has adopted such an adaptive approach in its own governance structure, which in this article is referred to as: the new governance "mentality." This mentality of governance …
The Concept Of Species With Constant Reference To Killer Whales, Thomas Wheeler
The Concept Of Species With Constant Reference To Killer Whales, Thomas Wheeler
Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy
Watson recognized 182 species, Babington 251, and Bentham only 112. Over 150 years since Darwin’s time, scientists continue to debate what constitutes a species. But while this uncertainty remains unchanged, the law has: the United States has committed to protect individual (endangered) species. What was once merely an academic dispute now carries legal weight under the Endangered Species Act (ESA): recognition of a species can trigger significant economic consequences and non-recognition can doom a species to extinction. This comment examines the scientific roots of taxonomic uncertainty, the legal landscape of the ESA, and the potential unforeseen consequences of the relationship …

Enframing The Flesh: Heidegger, Transhumanism, And The Body As "Standing Reserve", Jesse I. Bailey
Enframing The Flesh: Heidegger, Transhumanism, And The Body As "Standing Reserve", Jesse I. Bailey
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
I argue that Heidegger's account of technology as "enframing" is a helpful lens through which to understand the possible effects and dangers of transhumanism. Without resorting to nebulous concepts such as "dignity," Heidegger's analysis can help us understand how new technologies employed to modify the body, brain, and consciousness will enframe our own bodies and identities as something akin to "standing reserve." Under transhumanism, the body is enframed as an external, technologically modifiable product. I indicate some of the problems that might arise when our own bodies no longer appear as central to our identity as embodied beings. Further, I …

When Harvard Said No To Eugenics: The J. Ewing Mears Bequest, 1927, Paul A. Lombardo
Faculty Publications By Year
James Ewing Mears (1838-1919) was a founding member of the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery. His 1910 book, The Problem of Race Betterment, laid the groundwork for later authors to explore the uses of surgical sterilization as a eugenic measure. Mears left $60,000 in his will to Harvard University to support the teaching of eugenics. Although numerous eugenic activists were on the Harvard faculty, and who of its Presidents were also associated with the eugenics movement, Harvard refused the Mears gift. The bequest was eventually awarded to Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. This article explains why Harvard turned its back …

Road Salt Use And Groundwater Quality: Cedar Falls, Ia, Brian Gedlinske
Other Faculty and Staff Publications
Since 1940, road salt use in the United States has escalated from roughly 0.28 to over 16 million metric tons annually. This long-term, intense deicing use has created environmental concerns – typically over surface water quality, aquatic life, and vegetation. Recent work, however, also ties road salt use to rising chloride (Cl-) concentrations in groundwater supplies.
Global Population Structure Of The Dusky Shark And Geographic Sourcing Of Shark Fins From Commercial Markets, Teagen K. Gray
Global Population Structure Of The Dusky Shark And Geographic Sourcing Of Shark Fins From Commercial Markets, Teagen K. Gray
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The dusky shark, Carcharinus obscurus, is a globally distributed, coastal-pelagic species subject to an apparent high level of exploitation. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists this species as “Vulnerable” globally, and “Endangered” within western North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico waters due to an over 80% decline in this region, with no evidence of population recovery. The extensive exploitation of dusky sharks may partly be attributed to the high market value of its fins, but the contribution of individual dusky shark stocks to the fin markets is unknown. This knowledge would be helpful to detect …

Generic Entry Jujitsu: Innovation And Quality In Drug Manufacturing, W. Nicholson Price Ii
IP Theory
The manufacturing side of the pharmaceutical industry has been neglected in innovation theory and policy, with the unfortunate result of stagnant manufacturing techniques driving major problems for the healthcare system. This innovation failure has roots in ineffective intellectual property incentives and high regulatory hurdles to innovative change. Changes in pure regulation or intellectual property incentives have significant potential to help the innovation deficit, but are not the only possibility for change. A relatively minor regulatory change could harness the powerful dynamics of pioneer/generic competition surrounding generic drug market entry. If pioneer firms were permitted to make label claims committing to …

Coordinated And Distinct Functions Of Velvet Proteins In Fusarium Verticillioides, Nan Lan, Hanxing Zhang, Chengcheng Hu, Wenzhao Wang, Ana M. Calvo, Steven D. Harris, She Chen, Shaojie Li
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Velvet-domain-containing proteins are broadly distributed within the fungal kingdom. In the corn pathogen Fusarium verticillioides, previous studies showed that the velvet protein F. verticillioides VE1 (FvVE1) is critical for morphological development, colony hydrophobicity, toxin production, and pathogenicity. In this study, tandem affinity purification of FvVE1 revealed that FvVE1 can form a complex with the velvet proteins F. verticillioides VelB (FvVelB) and FvVelC. Phenotypic characterization of gene knockout mutants showed that, as in the case of FvVE1, FvVelB regulated conidial size, hyphal hydrophobicity, fumonisin production, and oxidant resistance, while FvVelC was dispensable for these biological processes. Comparative transcriptional analysis of …
