Background Follow-up of HIV-exposed children for the delivery of prevention of mother-to-child transmission services and for early diagnosis and treatment of HIV infection is critical to their survival. Despite efforts, uptake of postnatal care for these children remains low in many subSaharan African countries. Methods A qualitative study was conducted in three provinces in Mozambique to identify motivators and barriers to improve uptake of and retention in HIV prevention, care and treatment services for HIV-exposed and HIV-infected children. Participant recommendations were also gathered. Individual interviews (n=79) and focus group discussions (n=32) were conducted with parents/caregivers, grandmothers, community leaders and health …

Two Species Competitive Model With The Allee Effect, Ann Brett, Mustafa Rs Kulenović Dec 2014

Two Species Competitive Model With The Allee Effect, Ann Brett, Mustafa Rs Kulenović

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider the following system of difference equations: [Mathematical equations cannot be displayed here, refer to PDF], where a, b, c, d are positive constants and x0, y0 ≥ 0 are initial conditions. This system has interesting dynamics and can have up to nine equilibrium points. The most complex and perhaps most interesting case is the case of nine equilibrium points, four of which are local attractors, four of which are saddle points, and one of which is a repeller. Using recent results of Kulenović and Merino we are able to characterize the basins of attractions of …

Characterizing The Evolutionary Path(S) To Early Homo, Lauren Schroeder, Charles C. Roseman, James M. Cheverud, Rebecca R. Ackermann

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Numerous studies suggest that the transition from Australopithecus to Homo was characterized by evolutionary innovation, resulting in the emergence and coexistence of a diversity of forms. However, the evolutionary processes necessary to drive such a transition have not been examined. Here, we apply statistical tests developed from quantitative evolutionary theory to assess whether morphological differences among late australopith and early Homo species in Africa have been shaped by natural selection. Where selection is demonstrated, we identify aspects of morphology that were most likely under selective pressure, and determine the nature (type, rate) of that selection. Results demonstrate that selection must …

Evaluating The Progress Of A Mangrove Reforestation Project On Isla Galeta, Colon, Abigail Hope Outterson Dec 2014

Evaluating The Progress Of A Mangrove Reforestation Project On Isla Galeta, Colon, Abigail Hope Outterson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Just off the Atlantic coast of Panama, a dynamic and self-renewing ecosystem takes advantage of the tropical climate and swampy conditions. Guarding Punta Galeta’s shores since before it was a U.S. navy base in the 1930’s, mangroves that have persisted here for centuries now draw scientists and tourists alike from all over the world to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Center. Once viewed as unproductive, distasteful environments, mangroves are increasingly recognized worldwide as critical habitat for endangered and commercially significant species, as well as for their ecological and aesthetic value. Uniquely adapted to survive in saline environments, mangroves combine methods of …

Big Data In Healthcare: What Is It Used For?, Rebecca Hermon, Patricia A H Williams Dec 2014

Big Data In Healthcare: What Is It Used For?, Rebecca Hermon, Patricia A H Williams

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

Big data analytics is a growth area with the potential to provide useful insight in healthcare. Whilst many dimensions of big data still present issues in its use and adoption, such as managing the volume, variety, velocity, veracity, and value, the accuracy, integrity, and semantic interpretation are of greater concern in clinical application. However, such challenges have not deterred the use and exploration of big data as an evidence source in healthcare. This drives the need to investigate healthcare information to control and reduce the burgeoning cost of healthcare, as well as to seek evidence to improve patient outcomes. Whilst …

Optical Characterization And Distribution Of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (Cdom) In Soil Porewater From A Salt Marsh Ecosystem, Catherine D. Clark, Paige Aiona, Jason K. Keller, Warren J. De Bruyn Dec 2014

Optical Characterization And Distribution Of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (Cdom) In Soil Porewater From A Salt Marsh Ecosystem, Catherine D. Clark, Paige Aiona, Jason K. Keller, Warren J. De Bruyn

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

To characterize chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in marsh porewaters and its contribution as a carbon source, optical properties (absorbance, fluorescence indices, 3-dimensional excitation-emission matrices [EEMs]) of soil porewater and surface water were measured in a southern Californian salt marsh. Absorption coefficients and fluorescence intensities were higher in porewater than in overlying surface waters, consistent with higher CDOM concentration at depth. Humic-type peaks A and C were observed in EEMs in all samples, and peak M was observed in surface waters and shallow porewater to -5 cm depth. Fluorescence:absorbance (flu:abs) ratios and spectral slopes (S) decreased across the surface interface, …

Estimation Of Inbreeding And Substructure Levels In African-Derived Brazilian Quilombo Populations, Renan B. Lemes, Kelly Nunes, Diogo Meyer, Regina Célia Mingroni-Netto, Paulo A. Otto

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The present paper deals with the estimation of inbreeding and substructure levels in a set of ten (later regrouped as eight) African-derived quilombo communities from the Ribeira River Valley in the southern portion of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Inbreeding levels were assessed through F values estimated from the direct analysis of genealogical data and from the statistical analysis of a large set of 30 molecular markers. The levels of population substructure found were modest, as well as the degree of inbreeding: in the set of all communities considered together, F values ranged from 0.00136 to 0.00248, when using …

Managing Wireless Security Risks In Medical Services, Brian Cusack, Akar Kyaw Dec 2014

Managing Wireless Security Risks In Medical Services, Brian Cusack, Akar Kyaw

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

Medical systems are designed for a range of end users from different professional skill groups and people who carry the devices in and on their bodies. Open, accurate, and efficient communication is the priority for medical systems and consequently strong protection costs are traded against the utility benefits for open systems. In this paper we assess the vulnerabilities created by the professional and end user expectations, and theorise ways to mitigate wireless security vulnerabilities. The benefits of wireless medical services are great in terms of efficiencies, mobility, and information management. These benefits may be realised by treating the vulnerabilities and …

Single- And Dual-Porosity Calibration And Long-Term Modeling Of Highly Conductive Floodplain Soils In The Ozark Ecoregion, Ryan P. Freiberger Dec 2014

Single- And Dual-Porosity Calibration And Long-Term Modeling Of Highly Conductive Floodplain Soils In The Ozark Ecoregion, Ryan P. Freiberger

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phosphorus (P) is a critical nutrient for agriculture, but is also responsible for surface water enrichment that leads to algal growth. While P loading to surface waters has traditionally been thought to occur from surface runoff, contributions from subsurface transport can also be significant. Subsurface transport through gravelly soils in the Ozark ecoregion can have a significant, yet poorly-documented effect on P movement to groundwater.

Long-term P modeling was performed in HYDRUS-1D and 2D using data collected from short-term plot experiments featuring gravelly soils. Seven model levels were developed to illustrate a wide variety of laboratory and field conditions. Calibration …

GAIP interacting protein C terminus (GIPC) is known to play an important role in a variety of physiological and disease states. In the present study, we have identified a novel role for GIPC as a master regulator of autophagy and the exocytotic pathways in cancer. We show that depletion of GIPC-induced autophagy in pancreatic cancer cells, as evident from the upregulation of the autophagy marker LC3II. We further report that GIPC regulates cellular trafficking pathways by modulating the secretion, biogenesis, and molecular composition of exosomes. We also identified the involvement of GIPC on metabolic stress pathways regulating autophagy and microvesicular …

Management Of Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus In The Missouri River, Nebraska, Brandon L. Eder

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The popularity of catfish Ictaluridae nationally as a sport fish is well documented and angling for catfish on the Missouri River in Nebraska (NMR) is especially popular. Catfish monitoring program by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) began in 1974 and several short-term evaluations of Channel Catfish population dynamics have been performed. However, no long term analyses of population characteristics have been conducted since the early 1990s. The focus of this research was to summarize the status of Channel Catfish populations in the NMR and give recommendations for future management. I summarized population characteristics, modeled length limit regulations, and …

Blast-Off: Determining Glioblastoma Goi Sequence Conservation Across Model Organisms, Joseph K. Kaplan Dec 2014

Blast-Off: Determining Glioblastoma Goi Sequence Conservation Across Model Organisms, Joseph K. Kaplan

Theses

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) are aggressive brain tumors found in the nervous system of humans. Derived from glia such as astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and Schwannn cells, glioblastomas can develop throughout the nervous system, but are most commonly found in the brain. Prognosis following glioblastoma diagnosis is often very grim; only 3-5% of patients diagnosed with glioblastoma live beyond 36 months, therefore early detection and proper treatment are imperative. Scientists have studied the genetic factors linked to GBM development in humans and model organisms and determined a number of glioblastoma GOI. Many of the glioblastoma GOI have been previously identified as oncogenes such …

An Activity Aimed At Improving Student Explanations Of Biological Mechanisms, Caleb M. Trujillo, Trevor R. Anderson, Nancy J. Pelaez

PIBERG Instructional Innovation Materials

This document is intended for use by instructors and their students. The activity contains steps to introduce students to the MACH model involving analyzing and discussing explanations about biological mechanisms. Initially, students read modified articles about biological mechanisms during class, although instructors may prefer to assign readings outside of class before the activity. During the activity, students are required to analyze the readings for evidence of research methods, analogies, context, and mechanisms. In so doing, students learn how to integrate the information pertaining to each of the MACH model components into a coherent explanation about their biological mechanism. After performing …

A Tetrahedral Version Of The Mach Model For Explaining Biological Mechanisms, Caleb M. Trujillo, Trevor R. Anderson, Nancy J. Pelaez Dec 2014

A Tetrahedral Version Of The Mach Model For Explaining Biological Mechanisms, Caleb M. Trujillo, Trevor R. Anderson, Nancy J. Pelaez

PIBERG Instructional Innovation Materials

This document is intended for both instructors and students. Modified from the original MACH model this version, once cut and folded, creates a tetrahedral model that can conveniently be used as a teaching and learning tool to inform and guide students on how to write expert quality explanations of biological mechanisms. Each vertex of the tetrahedron represents a component of the model namely, Methods, Analogy, Context, and How. For a coherent and complete explanation about molecular mechanisms, it is important to integrate information pertaining to all four components of the model. The tetrahedral MACH model has been tested in both …

Metabolic Engineering Of Oilseed Crops To Produce High Levels Of Novel Acetyl Glyceride Oils With Reduced Viscosity, Freezing Point And Calorific Value, Jinjie Liu, Adam Rice, Kathleen Mcglew, Vincent Shaw, Hyunwoo Park, Thomas E. Clemente, Mike Pollard, John Ohlrogge, Timothy P. Durrett Dec 2014

Metabolic Engineering Of Oilseed Crops To Produce High Levels Of Novel Acetyl Glyceride Oils With Reduced Viscosity, Freezing Point And Calorific Value, Jinjie Liu, Adam Rice, Kathleen Mcglew, Vincent Shaw, Hyunwoo Park, Thomas E. Clemente, Mike Pollard, John Ohlrogge, Timothy P. Durrett

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Seed oils have proved recalcitrant to modification for the production of industrially useful lipids. Here, we demonstrate the successful metabolic engineering and subsequent field production of an oilseed crop with the highest accumulation of unusual oil achieved so far in transgenic plants. Previously, expression of the Euonymus alatus diacylglycerol acetyltransferase (EaDAcT) gene in wild-type Arabidopsis seeds resulted in the accumulation of 45 mol% of unusual 3-acetyl-1,2- diacyl-sn-glycerols (acetyl-TAGs) in the seed oil (Durrett et al., 2010 PNAS 107:9464). Expression of EaDAcT in dgat1 mutants compromised in their ability to synthesize regular triacylglycerols increased acetyl-TAGs to 65 mol%. Camelina and soybean …

Nocturnal Spotlight Surveys For Monitoring Scripps's Murrelets In At-Sea Congregations At Anacapa Island, California, Darrell L. Whitworth, Harry R. Carter Dec 2014

Nocturnal Spotlight Surveys For Monitoring Scripps's Murrelets In At-Sea Congregations At Anacapa Island, California, Darrell L. Whitworth, Harry R. Carter

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

Concealed nest sites, mostly inaccessible breeding habitats, and nocturnal colony visitation have long hindered studies of Scripps’s Murrelets (Synthliboramphus scrippsi); but conspicuous and seasonally predictable at-sea congregations adjacent to nesting areas provide a valuable index for assessing murrelet colony size and population trends at all 12 breeding islands. We developed a boat-based nocturnal spotlight survey for counting murrelets in at-sea congregations at Anacapa Island, California. A high-intensity spotlight was used to count murrelets during standard surveys conducted on 2 parallel transects (1.9 km each) located 200 m (“inshore”) and 500 m (“offshore”) from shore. We conducted 130 standard …

Contributions To An Arthropod Inventory Of Santa Cruz Island, California, Ida Naughton, Michael S. Caterino, Cause Hanna, David Holway

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

Arthropods have been understudied on Santa Cruz Island, resulting in an incomplete understanding of these diverse and ecologically important members of island ecosystems. To enhance the current understanding of Santa Cruz Island biodiversity, we sampled arthropods in 2 native plant habitats: island scrub oak (Quercus pacifica) woodland and patches of island morning glory (Calystegia macrostegia ssp. macrostegia). We used 4 standardized sampling techniques to sample arthropods in 16 Q. pacifica woodland plots. We sampled arthropods associated with C. macrostegia by pan trapping within 1 m of blooming morning glory individuals. In total, we sampled over 18,000 …

Using Leaf-Off Lidar In Modeling Forest Canopy Structure And Assessing The Effect Of Spatial Resolution In Landscape Analyses, Jason R. Parent Dec 2014

Using Leaf-Off Lidar In Modeling Forest Canopy Structure And Assessing The Effect Of Spatial Resolution In Landscape Analyses, Jason R. Parent

Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, the increasing availability of airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) has allowed landscapes to be studied in unprecedented detail. These data are primarily acquired during leaf-off canopy conditions because it is optimal for modeling the bare earth terrain in deciduous forests. However, there has been limited research investigating the utility of leaf-off data for modeling forest canopy structure and land cover. Furthermore, given the far greater spatial and temporal abundance of moderate- and coarse-resolution remote sensing data, it would be advantageous to determine when coarser data can serve as a useful proxy for finer data in landscape …

A Study Of Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticle Rf Heating In Gellan Gum Polymer Under Various Experimental Conditions For Potential Application In Drug Delivery, Gabriel Marcus

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have found use in a wide variety of biomedical applications including hyperthermia, imaging and drug delivery. Certain physical properties, such as the ability to generate heat in response to an alternating magnetic field, make these structures ideal for such purposes. This study's objective was to elucidate the mechanisms primarily responsible for RF MNP heating and determine how such processes affect polymer solutions that might be useful in drug delivery. 15-20 nm magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles at 0.2% and 0.5% concentrations were heated with RF fields of different strengths (200 Oe, 400 Oe and 600 …
