Urban Planning Process: Can Technology Enhance Participatory Communication?, Rojin Vishkaie, Richard Levy, Anthony Tang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Oftentimes, within the urban planning process, urban planners and GIS experts must work together using desktop Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Geographic Information System (GIS). However, participatory communication and visualization which are important in the urban planning process, are not a central focus in the design of current computer-aided planning technologies. This study tends to provide an understanding of technological challenges and complexities urban planners and GIS experts encounter while engaging in a participatory environment during the urban planning process. This study also explores the perceptions of urban planners and GIS experts about the potential impact and usefulness of interactive surfaces …

We study the problem of online multitask learning for solving multiple related classification tasks in parallel, aiming at classifying every sequence of data received by each task accurately and efficiently. One practical example of online multitask learning is the micro-blog sentiment detection on a group of users, which classifies micro-blog posts generated by each user into emotional or non-emotional categories. This particular online learning task is challenging for a number of reasons. First of all, to meet the critical requirements of online applications, a highly efficient and scalable classification solution that can make immediate predictions with low learning cost is …

Background
Exposure to traffic pollution has been linked to numerous adverse health endpoints. Despite this, limited data examining traffic exposures during realistic commutes and acute response exists. Objectives: We conducted the Atlanta Commuters Exposures (ACE-1) Study, an extensive panel-based exposure and health study, to measure chemically-resolved in-vehicle exposures and corresponding changes in acute oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, pulmonary and systemic inflammation and autonomic response.
Methods
We recruited 42 adults (21 with and 21 without asthma) to conduct two 2-h scripted highway commutes during morning rush hour in the metropolitan Atlanta area. A suite of in-vehicle particulate components were measured in …

Theoretical/Experimental Comparison Of Deep Tunneling Decay Of Quasi-Bound H(D)Oco To H(D) + Co₂, Albert F. Wagner, Richard Dawes, Robert Continetti, Hua Guo
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The measured H(D)OCO survival fractions of the photoelectron-photofragment coincidence experiments by the Continetti group are qualitatively reproduced by tunneling calculations to H(D) + CO2 on several recent ab initio potential energy surfaces for the HOCO system. the tunneling calculations involve effective one-dimensional barriers based on steepest descent paths computed on each potential energy surface. the resulting tunneling probabilities are converted into H(D)OCO survival fractions using a model developed by the Continetti group in which every oscillation of the H(D)-OCO stretch provides an opportunity to tunnel. Four different potential energy surfaces are examined with the best qualitative agreement with experiment …

Communication: Rigorous Quantum Dynamics Of O + O₂ Exchange Reactions On An Ab Initio Potential Energy Surface Substantiate The Negative Temperature Dependence Of Rate Coefficients, Yaqin Li, Zhigang Sun, Bin Jiang, Daiqian Xie, Richard Dawes, Hua Guo
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The kinetics and dynamics of several O + O2 isotope exchange reactions have been investigated on a recently determined accurate global O3 potential energy surface using a time-dependent wave packet method. The agreement between calculated and measured rate coefficients is significantly improved over previous work. More importantly, the experimentally observed negative temperature dependence of the rate coefficients is for the first time rigorously reproduced theoretically. This negative temperature dependence can be attributed to the absence in the new potential energy surface of a submerged "reef" structure, which was present in all previous potential energy surfaces. In addition, contributions …

Cultural Neuroscience: A Historical Introduction And Overview, Nicholas O. Rule
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The integration of cognitive neuroscience with the study of culture emerged from independent ascensions among both fields in the early 1990s. This marriage of the two previously unconnected areas of inquiry has generated a variety of empirical and theoretical works that have provided unique insights to both partners that might have otherwise gone overlooked. Here, I provide a brief historical introduction to the emergence of cultural neuroscience from its roots in cultural psychology and cognitive neuroscience to its present stature as one of the most challenging but rewarding sub-disciplines to have come from the burgeoning growth of the study of …

Positive Quality Of Life Factors Identified From Efnep Participant Stories, Wanda M. Koszewski, Megan Hlavacek, Kathryn Yerxa, Sandra B. Procter
Journal of Extension
EFNEP collects stories from participants and educators regarding the program's impacts. The objective of the study reported here was to qualitatively analyze these stories in the context of quality of life. Researchers analyzed 1,057 stories by identifying key words and developing codes to best describe the information. After analysis, codes were grouped into themes. The research demonstrated that EFNEP is perceived to have positively affected the quality of life of participants. These results not only confirm broader EFNEP benefits, but suggest an additional variable (quality of life) to consider as a measureable outcome.

Journal of Extension
Citizen science projects can serve as constructivist learning environments for programming focused on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for youth. Attributes of rich environments for active learning (REALs) provide a framework for design of Extension STEM learning environments. Guiding principles and design strategies for the University of Minnesota Extension's Driven to Discover: Enabling Authentic Inquiry through Citizen Science project demonstrate how education and investigations grounded in real-world citizen science projects can capitalize on REAL environments to generate meaningful STEM learning. Positive evaluation results support the efficacy of the design for enhancing youth science identity and practice.

SIDLIT Conference
Come examine how adding critical thinking components can meaningfully introduce the resources and services available through the library. Designing assignments with critical thinking components changes the focus from locating a thing to thinking about the relationship between things; between the topic and the key words that describe the idea; between the OPAC and the items on the shelf; between discovery and the quality of information. Examples will demonstrate how assignments emphasizing process and resourcefulness engage students to think through the search process and highlight the link between assignments and the various locations, services and resources needed.

Presidential Address: Reimagining The Future Of Agriculture: Building Knowledge For Sustainability And Resilience, Keiko Tanaka
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The theme of the 2014 SRSA meeting called attention to the interrelationships between agricultural sustainability and community resilience, which have become interrelated goals in building agriculture and communities that support vibrant local food economies in a rapidly globalizing food economy. In this presidential address, I will start with a story of my aunt, who was a farm wife/woman in Tanba Sasayama, Japan. Then, I will return to William H. Friedland’s critique of rural sociology/rural sociologists from 32 years ago to reflect on the impact of an increased importance of these two concepts on transforming the institutional landscape of agricultural sciences. …

On Rural-Urban Differences In Human Capital Formation: Finding The ‘Bottlenecks’, Elton Mykerezi, Genti Kostandini, Jeffery L. Jordan, Ilda Melo
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Studies have found lower levels of educational achievement for students in rural areas focusing mostly on cross-sectional data. Using the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, we follow the same youth cohort to examine whether there are metro-nonmetro gaps in high cognitive achievement, high school graduation, college readiness, degree attainment, and earnings. We find that gaps emerge early in life and they remain constant through high school. In addition, results suggest that rural students graduate from high school at the same rate as their urban counterparts, but they fall behind when it comes to college graduation rates. Growing up in a rural …

Madness And Method: Improvisation In The Theatre Of The Eighth Day, Lech Raczak
Mime Journal
Lech Raczak, the director of the Theatre of the Eighth Day for twenty-five years, describes the method of physical improvisation derived from Jerzy Grotowski that the troupe used to create productions. The Eighth Day used Grotowski’s methods to create productions that were very different in tone and content from those that Grotowski’s Laboratory Theatre created. They became famous for their stance of opposition to the Communist regime.
Structural Studies Of Bile Salt Aggregation By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Mass Spectrometry, Nicholas Doyle
Structural Studies Of Bile Salt Aggregation By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Mass Spectrometry, Nicholas Doyle
Master’s Theses
Bile salts are biomolecules that are produced in the liver and are responsible for a range of functions in the process of digestion, primarily the emulsification of dietary fat and fat-soluble vitamins. Despite their importance in biological chemistry, the structure and dynamics of bile salt aggregation are not well understood. The efforts described herein attempt to enhance the understanding of cholate aggregation numbers (AN), critical micelle concentration (CMC), micellar structure(s), and interactions with a binaphthyl probe molecule. Cholate is the most common bile salt in mammals and is, therefore, a decent model for describing bile salt aggregation. CMC determination is …

An Efficient Method Of Estimating Downward Solar Radiation Based On The Modis Observations For The Use Of Land Surface Modeling, Min Chen, Qianlai Zhuang, Yujie He
Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications
Solar radiation is a critical variable in global change sciences. While most of the current global datasets provide only the total downward solar radiation, we aim to develop a method to estimate the downward global land surface solar radiation and its partitioned direct and diffuse components, which provide the necessary key meteorological inputs for most land surface models. We developed a simple satellite-based computing scheme to enable fast and reliable estimation of these variables. The global Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products at 1° spatial resolution for the period 2003–2011 were used as the forcing data. Evaluations at Baseline Surface …

A Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Genus Fragaria (Strawberry) Using Intron-Containing Sequence From The Adh-1 Gene, Laura M. Dimeglio, Gunter Staudt, Hongrun Yu, Thomas M. Davis
New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications
The genus Fragaria encompasses species at ploidy levels ranging from diploid to decaploid. The cultivated strawberry, Fragaria×ananassa, and its two immediate progenitors, F. chiloensis and F. virginiana, are octoploids. To elucidate the ancestries of these octoploid species, we performed a phylogenetic analysis using intron-containing sequences of the nuclear ADH-1 gene from 39 germplasm accessions representing nineteen Fragaria species and one outgroup species, Dasiphora fruticosa. All trees from Maximum Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood analyses showed two major clades, Clade A and Clade B. Each of the sampled octoploids contributed alleles to both major clades. All octoploid-derived alleles in Clade A clustered …

Review: Zinc’S Functional Significance In The Vertebrate Retina, Harris Ripps, Richard L. Chappell
Publications and Research
This review covers a broad range of topics related to the actions of zinc on the cells of the vertebrate retina. Much of this review relies on studies in which zinc was applied exogenously, and therefore the results, albeit highly suggestive, lack physiologic significance. This view stems from the fact that the concentrations of zinc used in these studies may not be encountered under the normal circumstances of life. This caveat is due to the lack of a zinc-specific probe with which to measure the concentrations of Zn2+ that may be released from neurons or act upon them. However, a …

In Vivo 2-Photon Microscopy And Collagen-Hydroxyapatite Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Engineering, Max M. Villa
Doctoral Dissertations
Cell-based bone tissue engineering has shown encouraging results in animal models and even a few human patients. This method could supplement or replace autologous (patient-derived) bone as a bone grafting material, with less damage to existing bone. However the factors that lead to the successful healing of bone injuries by cell-based tissue engineering are poorly understood and the optimal biomaterial for this task has not yet been identified. This dissertation will present: (i) the development of a live animal imaging model to visualize the healing process in a tissue engineered implant for bone regeneration and the novel observations found therein, …

Young people account for 50% of new cases of sexually transmitted infections, but they continue to use condoms inconsistently. Theoretically, intentions determine behavior. However, research suggests that there is an intentions-condom use gap. This study attempted to examine how interrelations among factors influence the intentions-condom use association. A diverse sample of young adults (N = 337, 74.70% female) completed online baseline and one-month follow-up surveys. Latent class mixture modeling revealed four classes of sexual risk with a casual partner: high-risk (29.60%), low-risk (40.19%), sexual assault (17.13%), and assertive (13.08%) classes. Analyses revealed six classes of sexual risk with a relationship …

Fluorescence Photoactivation Based On 2-Nitrobenzyl Derivatives, Subramani Swaminathan
Open Access Dissertations
Fluorescence microscopy offers a non-invasive way to image biological species in real time. The phenomenon of diffraction, however, restricts the resolution of the conventional fluorescent microscopes to submicrometer dimensions in both the horizontal and vertical directions. This limitation can be overcome with the aid of photoactivatable fluorophores. Photoactivatable fluorophores switch from a nonemissive state to an emissive one under irradiation at an activation wavelength and then emit light in form of fluorescence upon illumination at an excitation wavelength. Such a concatenation of activation and excitation events translates into the possibility to switch fluorescence on within a defined region of space …
Effect Of A Lifestyle Modification Intervention On Perceived Stress: Associations With Weight Loss And A1c In Type 2 Diabetes, Karin A. Garcia
Effect Of A Lifestyle Modification Intervention On Perceived Stress: Associations With Weight Loss And A1c In Type 2 Diabetes, Karin A. Garcia
Open Access Theses
Stress may have an important role in the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its complications (Black, 2006). Individuals with T2D who experience higher levels of stress also tend to experience poorer glycemic control and more exacerbated diabetes related complications than less stressed counterparts (Surwit & Schneider, 1993). Obesity has also been linked to T2D as those with a higher BMI are at greater risk for developing the disease and disease-related comorbidities (Astrup & Finer, 2000; Moore, Wilson, D’Agostino, Finkle & Elliso, 2000). Lifestyle modification interventions, designed for individuals with or at risk for developing T2D, have primarily focused …

Elucidation Of The Role Of Auxin-Input Pathways In Auxin Homeostasis., Gretchen Spiess
Dissertations
Auxin is a phytohormone involved in cell elongation and division. Levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), the most abundant auxin, are tightly regulated through biosynthesis, degradation, sequestration, and transport. Sequestration of IAA occurs in reversible processes by adding amino acids, polyol or simple alcohols, or sugars, forming IAA conjugates, or via a two-carbon elongation forming indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). These forms of auxin have decreased activity and are located in multiple organelles. Using a combination of molecular and genetic tools, I examined how these storage forms are working together to contribute to overall IAA levels and IAA response in both the model …

Leaf Mechanical Strength Corresponds To Tissue Water Relations In Twelve Species Of California Ferns, Breahna M. Gillespie, Stephen D. Davis, Jarmila Pittermann
Biology
The dominant vegetation types in southern California’s coastal foothills are chaparral and costal sage scrub. Chaparral shrubs have mechanically strong evergreen leaves whereas coastal sage scrubs bear mechanical weak, facultative deciduous leaves. What about the ferns that live in the understory of these vegetation types, especially considering their adaptations to a summer dry, Mediterranean-type climate? We tested the hypothesis that some fern leaves are stronger than others and mechanically strong leaves are associated with greater dehydration tolerance. Twelve fern species were examined. Tissue water relations were assessed via pressure volume curves using Scholander-Hammel pressure chambers. We estimated osmotic potential at …
