Large-Scale Solution Approaches For Healthcare And Supply Chain Scheduling, Ridvan Gedik
Large-Scale Solution Approaches For Healthcare And Supply Chain Scheduling, Ridvan Gedik
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research proposes novel solution techniques for two real world problems. We first consider a patient scheduling problem in a proton therapy facility with deterministic patient arrivals. In order to assess the impacts of several operational constraints, we propose single and multi-criteria linear programming models. In addition, we ensure that the strategic patient mix restrictions predetermined by the decision makers are also enforced within the planning horizon. We study the mathematical structures of the single criteria model with strict patient mix restrictions and derive analytical equations for the optimal solutions under several operational restrictions. These efforts lead to a set …
Applied Statistics In Environmental Monitoring: Case Studies And Analysis For The Michigan Bald Eagle Biosentinel Program, Katherine Leith
Applied Statistics In Environmental Monitoring: Case Studies And Analysis For The Michigan Bald Eagle Biosentinel Program, Katherine Leith
All Dissertations
The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is an extensively researched tertiary predator. Its life history and the impact of various stressors on its reproductive outcomes have been documented in many studies, and over many years. Furthermore, the bald eagle population recovery in Michigan has been closely monitored since the 1960s, as it has continued to recover from a contaminant-induced bottleneck. Because of its position at the top of the aquatic food web and the large body of ethological knowledge, the bald eagle has become a sentinel species for the Michigan aquatic ecosystem. In April 1999, the Michigan Department of Environmental Qualtity, …

The Nucleic Acid Binding Properties Of The Pwi Motif, Hamideh Keshavarz-Mohammadian
The Nucleic Acid Binding Properties Of The Pwi Motif, Hamideh Keshavarz-Mohammadian
Masters Theses
The PWI motif is a highly conserved domain that contains a Proline-Tryptophan-Isoleucine (PWI) tripeptide sequence, for which it is named. Proteins that contain a PWI motif are known to be involved in the constitutive and alternative splicing and the 3'-end processing of messenger RNA transcripts. The hypothesized role of the PWI motif is to nonspecifically interact with nucleic acids. The PWI motif is capable of binding both doublestranded and single stranded forms of DNA and RNA. The structure of the highly conserved core of the PWI motif reveals that it adopts a four-helix bundle fold. The structured core domain, however, …
More Than A Feeling: The Transmission Of Affect And Group Identity, Lauren Fine
More Than A Feeling: The Transmission Of Affect And Group Identity, Lauren Fine
Student Works
This thesis explores the implications that the transmission of affect (when one person’s emotions are transferred through pheromones and visual cues to trigger a similar affective response in someone else) could have on the study of rhetoric, specifically how we understand rhetorical situations involving large groups. According to Kenneth Burke, our identities are made up of the groups we identify ourselves with, which makes our identities largely based on emotionally connecting with other people. When groups are gathered together, particularly in emotionally charged situations, this emotional connection is often triggered by the subconscious transmission of affect. Transmission can lead a …
Language Diversity And Leadership, Deborah Oliverio-Olivieri
Language Diversity And Leadership, Deborah Oliverio-Olivieri
Education Doctoral
Research indicates the value of language diversity for nations, organizations, and individuals. However, it is unclear whether language diversity is an untapped leadership resource. The purpose of this study was to examine language diversity and leadership effectiveness in the U.S. labor market. The conceptual framework of language-asresource framed the topic of this study (Ruiz, 1984). This study employed mixed methods procedures. First, data from the 2010 General Social Survey was used to describe the relationship between languages other than English (LOTE) and occupational achievement by utilizing proxy variables. Descriptive statistics and hierarchical regressions results were reported. Second, data were gathered …
Are We Prepared To Hear Them All? Examining The Relationship Between Substance Abuse Counselors' Knowledge Of The Models Of Disability And The Self-Assessment Of Their Cultural Competence Working With Deaf Sign-Language Users, Angelia Smith-Wilson
Education Doctoral
This study examined the relationship between four specific models of disability and the substance abuse counselor’s (SAC) self-assessment of cultural competency when working with deaf sign-language users. Given the exploratory nature of the study, the researcher chose an interview strategy to collect qualitative data. The research question informing the study is: What is the relationship between SACs’ knowledge of the four models of disability and their self-assessment of cultural competency when working with deaf sign-language users? Qualitative data was collected from interviewing 10 substance abuse counselors. A particular effort was made to interview both hearing and deaf SACs, with varying …
Reading Motivation, Parent Engagement, And Student Engagement As It Relates To Reading Achievement Of Urban Adolescents, Arabelle Lacroix
Reading Motivation, Parent Engagement, And Student Engagement As It Relates To Reading Achievement Of Urban Adolescents, Arabelle Lacroix
Education Doctoral
Education is a key factor linked to a nation’s economic potential. Since the No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law, much of the empirical research investigating the reading achievement of millions of students across the nation suggest that American students are not equipped with the advanced literacy skills to enter the 21st century workforce, specifically urban adolescents attending schools in economically disadvantaged areas. Although scholars have examined the critical concern for reading achievement, little is known about the factors contributing to the reading achievement of urban middle school students. Despite radical education reform efforts, there still exists a …

Parent Link: A Correlational Analysis Of Students' Perceptions Of Parental Engagement And Student Grade Point Average, Attendance, And Attitudes Toward School, Georgette Malcolm
Education Doctoral
Research suggests that parent engagement leads to positive student outcomes, such as academic achievement, attendance and level of motivation. Typically, the definition of parental engagement is dependent on parents, and teachers. Little research focuses on the students’ perceptions of parental support. Students’ perceptions of parental engagement need to be further researched in order to help validate research around parental engagement and its implication on student outcomes. The intent of this quantitative study will be to investigate to what degree a relationship exists between middle school students’ perceptions of parental support and student outcomes, namely student grade point average, attendance, and …
The Experiences Of Women In Post Graduate Physics And Astronomy Programs: The Roles Of Support, Career Goals, And Gendered Experiences, Ramón S. Barthelemy
The Experiences Of Women In Post Graduate Physics And Astronomy Programs: The Roles Of Support, Career Goals, And Gendered Experiences, Ramón S. Barthelemy
Dissertations
In physics and astronomy the low representation of women is obvious at every stage of the educational pathway from undergraduate students to full professors. These low numbers perpetuate themselves by failing to create new mentors to foster the next generation of women. Women and men also have different experiences as they traverse into physics and astronomy careers. Women often experience chilly climates, discrimination, and challenges coordinating the demands of young families with their careers. In the literature exploring this topic, little focus is put on the experiences of women graduate students in physics and no focus is put on women …
Efficacy Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy With The Use Of In-Room Coaching, Cassie Shacklett Reeve
Efficacy Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy With The Use Of In-Room Coaching, Cassie Shacklett Reeve
Dissertations
One significant consequence of oppositional and defiant behavior is an increase in negative interactions between caregivers and the child exhibiting those behaviors (Greene & Doyle, 1999). Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an empirically supported treatment that targets the development of a nurturing parent-child relationship along with teaching effective discipline strategies to decrease child noncompliance (Bodiford-McNeil & Hembree-Kigin, 2010). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of PCIT when modified by utilizing strictly in-room coaching. This type of research would allow for expanded use of this empirically supported treatment into community agencies and clinics which do not …
Eliciting Elementary School Students’ Informal Inferential Reasoning Through Storytelling, Dustin Owen Smith
Eliciting Elementary School Students’ Informal Inferential Reasoning Through Storytelling, Dustin Owen Smith
Dissertations
One growing area of research on statistical learning is Informal Inferential Reasoning (IIR). Makar and Rubin (2009) describe IIR as having three components: making and evaluating inferential claims, supporting claims explicitly with data, and attending to the inherent uncertainty present in statistical inference-making. This dissertation study was built around developing a method for providing opportunities for elementary school students (Grades K, 2, and 4) to engage with IIR within the context of stories and storytelling through a method called Storytelling-Questioning. After interacting with and discussing two separate stories, it was found that students of each grade level were able to …

Axe-Heads And Mississippian Political Economy: A St. Francois Provenance Study, Rosanna Yvonne Crow
Axe-Heads And Mississippian Political Economy: A St. Francois Provenance Study, Rosanna Yvonne Crow
Theses
Axe-heads made of a distinctive raw material are found at Mississippian sites across southern Illinois and the Ohio-Mississippi confluence region, yet little research has been done to determine their geological provenance. In this thesis, I use geochemical methods to analyze ground stone tools and debitage from across the Confluence Region in order to prove their origins in the St. Francois Mountains of Missouri. I also compare patterns of axe-head production, consumption, and deposition to Charles Cobb's (2000) model of Mill Creek chert hoes, so as to gain a greater understanding of the political economy of these objects.

Identification And Development Of The Support Needs In Nematology For Arkansas Cooperative Extension Personnel, Mia Gentry
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
County extension agents are vital to the land-grant university system and are responsible for transferring current, research-based knowledge from the university to the community. In-service training allows agents the means to maintain a current, sound knowledge base. Needs identified by leading nematologists led the researcher of this study to assess if nematology education was a topic that warranted in-service training development for Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service (CES) agents. The researcher also assessed agents' comfort level with job related technology. Of the respondents, 67% identified general knowledge of plant parasitic nematodes necessary to meet the needs of their clientele. Findings from …
Tempo And Mode Of Domestication During The Neolithic Revolution: Evidence From Dental Mesowear And Microwear Of Sheep, Melissa Zolnierz
Tempo And Mode Of Domestication During The Neolithic Revolution: Evidence From Dental Mesowear And Microwear Of Sheep, Melissa Zolnierz
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Neolithic Revolution marked a dramatic change in human subsistence practices. In order to explain this change, we must understand the motive forces behind it. Researchers have proposed many different stimuli, with most theories invoking environmental dynamics, human population density increases beyond environmental carrying capacity, and the natural outgrowth of human and plant/animal interactions. However, unanswered questions remain concerning the mechanics of animal domestication. Traditional studies of changing faunal morphology and skeletal population profiles offer some clues, but such research has had limited success identifying stages intermediate between wild and domesticated forms, which makes it difficult to discern initial attempts …
Impedance Biosensors For The Rapid Detection Of Viral And Bacterial Pathogens Using Avian Influenza Virus Subtypes H5n1 And H7n2 And Escherichia Coli O157:H7 As Model Targets, Jacob David Lum
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated impedance biosensors for the rapid detection of viral and bacterial pathogens using avian influenza virus (AIV) subtypes H5N1 and H7N2 and Escherichia coli O157:H7 as the model targets, which were chosen due to their impact on the agricultural and food industries. For the detection of AIV H7N2, a single stranded DNA aptamer was selected using systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX). The selected aptamer and a previously selected aptamer against AIV H5N1 were used in a microfluidics chip with an embedded interdigitated array microelectrode to fabricate an impedance biosensor for specific detection of AIV H7N2 …
Biophysical And Computational Investigations Into G-Quadruplex Structural Polymorphism And Interaction With Small Molecules., Huy Tuan Le
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the cell, guanine-rich nucleic acids can self-assemble into unique four stranded tertiary structures known as G-quadruplexes. G-quadruplex formation in the telomere leads inhibits telomerase, an enzyme activated in cancer cells to maintain the telomere and allowing for cancer cells to achieve immortality. G-quadruplex formation in the promoters and 5’-untranslated regions regulates the expression of many oncogenes. Furthermore, G-quadruplex formation during cellular replication promotes genomic instability, a characteristic which enables tumor development. Because of their implication in cancer, G-quadruplex structures have emerged as attractive drug targets for anti-tumor therapeutics. In the current dissertation work, we present three experimental approaches to …
Il-12 Induced Modulation Of Tumor Derived Myeloid Cell Inflammatory Responsiveness., Courtney Jetun Mitchell
Il-12 Induced Modulation Of Tumor Derived Myeloid Cell Inflammatory Responsiveness., Courtney Jetun Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tumor infiltrating and tumor associated myeloid cells (TIMs and TAMs) elaborate an array of factors that promote tumor growth and metastasis. IL-12, a potent inflammatory cytokine has been shown to induce regression of many cancers. We hypothesize that IL-12 augments the ability of TIMs and TAMs to respond to inflammatory stimuli providing a window in which these stimuli are more likely to promote tumor destruction. Related to this hypothesis, we asked two questions: (1) Does IL-12 directly change signaling events associated with inflammatory signal transduction? (2) Is IFN? required for the entirety of IL-12 induced enhancement of the response of …

Interleukin-6 Production And Epithelial Cell Signaling By Telomerase Immortalized Gingival Keratinocytes In Porphyromonas Gingivalis Infection., Himabindu Vuddaraju
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
P. gingivalis is a major periodontal disease causing pathogen. Gingival epithelial cells being the first line of defense, interact and internalize the bacteria evoking a cell signaling response that finally leads to the release of cytokines. IL-6 is a potent pro- inflammatory cytokine, which is one of the responsible factors for bone resorption, a clinical manifestation of periodontitis. The experimental model study hypothesizes that P. gingivalis infection increases the production of IL-6 in telomerase immortalized gingival keratinocytes (TIGKs) through up-regulation of c-Jun (AP-1 reporter). We observed the IL-6 production post-infection with P. gingivalis WT ATCC33277 and mutants ?0482, ?Ndk and …
Analysis Of Social Costs Of Gentrification In Over-The-Rhine : A Qualitative Approach., Shireen Deobhakta
Analysis Of Social Costs Of Gentrification In Over-The-Rhine : A Qualitative Approach., Shireen Deobhakta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the social costs and benefits of the gentrification process using qualitative methods. The neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine (OTR) in Cincinnati, Ohio, represents certain universalities of gentrification in an older city, and was thus chosen as the site for a case study. OTR’s prime location between the Central Business District and uptown medical and university community has spurred rapid gentrification, particularly since the early 2000s. Using in-depth interviews, participant observation, a focus group, and print media, this dissertation sought to understand the social costs and benefits of gentrification in OTR. Adopting the language of “revitalization” and “renaissance,” the city …

Taking Clinical Judgment Out Of The Equation : A Call For The Standardization Of Mci Diagnostic Criteria And Construction Of A Model To Predict Conversion To Dementia., Adam Tyler Gerstenecker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the diagnostic criteria for mild cognitive impairment have evolved considerably since their inception, they remain varied and able to be interpreted and implemented in different ways depending on the judgment of the clinician. Because of this issue, a wide range of incidence, prevalence, and conversion rates are found in the research literature. Using data collected from 400 patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment, limitations inherent in current mild cognitive impairment diagnostic criteria were addressed. First, using Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative diagnostic criteria, an equation was constructed to predict conversion from mild cognitive impairment to dementia by analyzing the predictive …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this investigator-initiated study is to identify levels of emotional intelligence (El), depression, and role fulfillment among foster parents. It is believed that if a link between EI and the other variables is identified, programs can be developed to help build EI in foster parents, and thus aid them in becoming more effective caregivers. A convenience sample of foster parents participated in this mixed methods study. There were 30 participants total recruited through a collaborative effort with a local Foster
Family Agency (FF A). Participants were at least 25 years of age and a certified foster parent. Participants …
Strategies To Sensitize Bladder Cancer Cells To Small Molecule Inhibitors Targeting The Pi3k Pathway, Giovanni Nitti
Strategies To Sensitize Bladder Cancer Cells To Small Molecule Inhibitors Targeting The Pi3k Pathway, Giovanni Nitti
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
After many years of cancer research, it is well accepted by the scientific community that the future cure for this disease lies in a personalized therapeutic approach. Anticipating therapeutic outcome based on the genetic signature of a tumor has become the new paradigm. The PI3K pathway represents an ideal target for bladder cancer, as many of the key proteins of this pathway are altered or mutated in this particular type of cancer. Several small molecule inhibitors have been developed to target this pathway, but their efficacy has been shown to be heterogeneous among different cell lines and mostly cytostatic but …

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
In vivo phage display screenings by intravenous injection of a random phage-displayed peptide library allow for the selection of peptides that localize to specific vascular beds. At the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, we have had the opportunity to perform phage display screenings in cancer patients in order to select for cancer specific targets directly in humans. These targets serve to define biochemical diversity of endothelial cell surfaces and can be validated and explored towards the design of vascular-targeted pharmacology. In the most recent patient screen, samples were recovered from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) as well as 26 additional …
Pi3k- And Mtor-Dependent Mechanisms Of Lapatinib Resistance And Resulting Therapeutic Opportunities, Samuel Brady
Pi3k- And Mtor-Dependent Mechanisms Of Lapatinib Resistance And Resulting Therapeutic Opportunities, Samuel Brady
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Breast cancers with HER2 amplification represent 20-25% of breast cancer cases and are frequently responsive to the HER2 kinase inhibitor lapatinib, but generally for only short duration. We aimed to understand how breast cancers with HER2 amplification become resistant to lapatinib, in order to identify potential therapies that can overcome lapatinib resistance. To establish lapatinib resistance models we treated three HER2+ breast cancer cell lines with lapatinib for several months until they became lapatinib-resistant. We then compared lapatinib-sensitive (parental) cells with their lapatinib-resistant (LapR) counterparts to identify changes conferring lapatinib resistance. We found that activation of PI3K, specifically the p110α …
