Chromatographic Analysis Of Fatty Acids Using 9-Chloromethyl-Anthracene And 2-Bromomethyl-Anthraquinone, Jesus B. Tapia Aug 2014

Chromatographic Analysis Of Fatty Acids Using 9-Chloromethyl-Anthracene And 2-Bromomethyl-Anthraquinone, Jesus B. Tapia

Master's Theses

Fatty acids are carboxylic acids with long alkane or alkene chains and are important components of living organisms. The presence of the carboxylic acid is analytically very important since it allows for derivatization with fluorescence reagents such as 9-chloromethyl-anthracene (9-CMA) for HPLC analysis. A method for the analysis of fatty acids using 9-CMA and 2-bromomethyl-anthraquinone (MAQ-Br) was developed. The method utilizes a modified protocol previously used for the analysis of short-chain carboxylic acids with 9-CMA. The modified protocol was applied to medium- and long-chain fatty acids for analysis by HPLC with UV-visible and fluorescence detection. After successful derivatization and analysis …

BackgroundVarious ecological and physiological mechanisms might influence the probability that two or more pathogens may simultaneously or sequentially infect a host individual. Concurrent infections can have important consequences for host condition and fitness, including elevated mortality risks. In addition, interactions between coinfecting pathogens may have important implications for transmission dynamics.MethodsHere, we explore patterns of association between two common avian pathogens (West Nile virus and avian malaria parasites) among a suburban bird community in Chicago, IL, USA that share mosquito vectors. We surveyed 1714 individual birds across 13 species for both pathogens through established molecular protocols.ResultsField investigations of haemosporidian and West …

Towards Image-Guided Pediatric Atrial Septal Defect Repair, Fuad Mefleh Aug 2014

Towards Image-Guided Pediatric Atrial Septal Defect Repair, Fuad Mefleh

All Dissertations

Congenital heart disease occurs in 107.6 out of 10,000 live births, with Atrial Septal Defects (ASD) accounting for 10\% of these conditions. Historically, ASDs were treated with open heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass, allowing a patch to be sewn over the defect. In 1976, King et al. demonstrated use of a transcatheter occlusion procedure, thus reducing the invasiveness of ASD repair. Localization during these catheter based procedures traditionally has relied on bi-plane fluoroscopy; more recently trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE) and intra-cardiac echocardiography (ICE) have been used to navigate these procedures. Although there is a high success rate using the transcatheter occlusion …

Effects Of Relaxed Assumptions On The State Switching Technique, Stephen Ilardi Aug 2014

Effects Of Relaxed Assumptions On The State Switching Technique, Stephen Ilardi

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis explores the effects of two assumptions commonly used in mathematical models related to a piezoelectric damping method known as State Switching. The technique relies on changing the stiffness state of a piezoelectric patch through control of the electrical boundary conditions. The transition between stiffness states is assumed to occur instantaneously and in concurrence with the switch event. In actuality, the transition will occur over a finite time and will trail behind the switch event by a finite time. For these assumptions to be valid, the effects of switch duration and delay on the performance of the State Switching …

Modeling Financial Markets Using Concepts From Mechanical Vibrations And Mass-Spring Systems, Michael Gandia Aug 2014

Modeling Financial Markets Using Concepts From Mechanical Vibrations And Mass-Spring Systems, Michael Gandia

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis describes a method of modeling financial markets by utilizing concepts from mechanical vibration. The models developed represent multi-degree of freedom, mass-spring systems. The economic principles that drive the design are supply and demand, which act as springs, and shareholders, which act as masses. The primary assumption of this research is that events cannot be predicted but the responses to those events can be. In other words, economic stimuli create responses to a stock’s price that is predictable, repeatable and scientific. The approach to determining the behavior of various financial markets encompassed techniques such as Fast Fourier Transform and …

Exploration Into The Cellular Effects Of Aziridinomitosenes, Christopher M. Mallory Aug 2014

Exploration Into The Cellular Effects Of Aziridinomitosenes, Christopher M. Mallory

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Aziridinomitosenes (AZMs) are organic compounds structurally related to the mitomycins, a class of anti-tumor agents and antibiotics. The cytotoxicity of the mitomycins is correlated to their ability to covalently link complimentary strands of DNA, forming DNA interstrand cross-links (ICLs). Currently, there has been limited investigation into the biological activity of AZMs, likely due to difficulties in their synthesis. Our lab has synthesized and evaluated the cellular effects of two AZMs, (1S, 2S)-6-desmethyl(methylaziridino)mitosene (H/H-AZM) and (1S, 2S)-6-methyl(methylaziridino)mitosene (Me/H-AZM). We hypothesize that AZMs exhibit their cytotoxicity and cellular effects following a similar pathway to that of mitomycin C (MC) including …

Application Of A Bioenergetics Framework For Assessing Sub-Lethal Effects Of Pollutants In The Freshwater Mussel Elliptio Complanata, Christopher G. Goodchild Aug 2014

Application Of A Bioenergetics Framework For Assessing Sub-Lethal Effects Of Pollutants In The Freshwater Mussel Elliptio Complanata, Christopher G. Goodchild

All Theses And Dissertations

Although biomarkers are frequently used to assess sublethal effects of contaminants, a lack of mechanistic linkages to higher-level effects limits the predictive power of biomarkers. Bioenergetics has been proposed as a framework for linking cellular effects to whole-animal effects. We investigated sublethal effects of exposure to wastewater treatment facility effluent in freshwater mussels in situ, thereby capturing ecologically relevant exposure conditions. Our study focused on the energetic biomarker AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), while also considering more traditional biomarkers like heat shock proteins (HSP70), and antioxidant enzymes (i.e., superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST)). We examined biomarkers at mRNA and protein levels. …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: Antiretroviral treatment (ART) has substantially reduced morbidity and mortality for HIV patients. In South Africa, with the largest ART programme globally, attention is needed not only on the further expansion of ART coverage, but also on factors which undermine its effectiveness, such as alcohol use.

Objective: Given the decentralised approach of nurse-initiated and -sustained ART in the South African primary health sector, it is important to document key aspects of alcohol use to be conveyed to HIV-positive individuals and those at risk for HIV.

Method: This study comprised a narrative review of relevant literature.

Results: Alcohol acts through both …

An Overview Of Animal Waste Water Management: Biodgesters In The Monteverde Zone Of Costa Rica, August 2014, Chelsea Solomon, Roberto Infante Rosado, Yanelis Hez, Melissa Ortiz

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

There has been an increase in environmental awareness since Costa Rica promised to be carbon neutral by 2021. Governmental organizations such as a high school in Santa Elena and Earth university have taken it upon themselves to fulfill this initiative through the implementation of more environmentally conscious technologies, i.e. a biodigester at a local high school in Santa Elena. The problem was that there was no sort of investigation understanding how the community within the school and the town’s community would react to this new addition. We were also asked to give information to the school so that they may …

A Soft Condensed Matter Approach Towards Mathematical Modelling Of Mass Transport And Swelling In Food Grains, Michael Chapwanya, N. Misra Aug 2014

A Soft Condensed Matter Approach Towards Mathematical Modelling Of Mass Transport And Swelling In Food Grains, Michael Chapwanya, N. Misra

Articles

Soft condensed matter (SCM) physics has recently gained importance for a large class of engineering materials. The treatment of food materials from a soft matter perspective, however, is only at the surface and is gaining importance for understanding the complex phenomena and structure of foods. In this work, we present a theoretical treatment of navy beans from a SCM perspective to describe the hydration kinetics. We solve the transport equations within a porous matrix and employ the Flory–Huggin’s equation for polymer–solvent mixture to balance the osmotic pressure. The swelling of the legume seed is modelled as a moving boundary with …

Chapter three presents the results of kinetic and thermodynamic …

Development Of A Black-Box Transient Thermal Model For Residential Buildings, Andrew Cross Aug 2014

Development Of A Black-Box Transient Thermal Model For Residential Buildings, Andrew Cross

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Heavily populated metropolitan areas located in cooling-dominated climates, as are found in the Desert Southwest, pose a challenge to electrical utilities that service these areas. During the late afternoons of the summer months, residents of these metropolitan areas require larger than normal amounts of power to run their homes' air conditioning systems, at significant expense to the utilities. In the study reported here, interior temperature and power consumption data, accumulated over the course of a year and a half from seven houses within a Las Vegas neighborhood, are used to develop a predictive black-box statistical model for residential thermal transience. …

The Relationship Between Teaching Approaches And Student Science Achievement For Four Racial Groups In Us Eighth Grade Classes, Su Gao Aug 2014

The Relationship Between Teaching Approaches And Student Science Achievement For Four Racial Groups In Us Eighth Grade Classes, Su Gao

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Lower science achievement and substantial racial performance gaps persist among students in the US. In the current reform of science teaching, inquiry-based science teaching is assumed effective in improving all student science learning in both scientific content and process and reducing learning gaps across racial groups. Conversely, traditional didactic science teaching is believed to be the most popular and has contributed to lower science achievement and the racial gap. These two assumptions, although central to science teaching reforms, cannot be empirically sustained in the existing literature on science teaching. Framed through the theoretical perspectives of inquiry-based instruction and culturally relevant …

Prison, Perceptions, And Policy: Authoritarianism And Attitudes Toward Sexual Assault Victims In U.S. Correctional Facilities, Amy Michelle Magnus Aug 2014

Prison, Perceptions, And Policy: Authoritarianism And Attitudes Toward Sexual Assault Victims In U.S. Correctional Facilities, Amy Michelle Magnus

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Existing research on sexual victimization in correctional facilities has expanded since the enactment of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003. Previous literature suggests that the prevalence of sexual victimization in prisons is unknown, yet the known ramifications of reported sexual assaults are serious for both the individuals involved and the institution. Government policies such as the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003 attempt to address the issue of sexual violence in U.S. correctional facilities. Limitations of PREA, however, derive from a lack of clear distinction between coerced and consensual behavior and how these ideas manifest and co-exist …

Identifying Maltreated Youths At Heightened Risk For Posttraumatic Symptoms, Emma H. Ross Aug 2014

Identifying Maltreated Youths At Heightened Risk For Posttraumatic Symptoms, Emma H. Ross

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Childhood maltreatment is associated with increased risk for lifetime and current PTSD (Davis & Siegel, 2000; Widom, 1999). This study examined a model of PTSD in which dissociation, depression, and posttraumatic cognitions related to heightened PTSD symptoms for maltreated youths. This study then evaluated the model's fit across variations in intelligence, gender, age, ethnicity, and maltreatment type. Participants (n=360) included youths from Department of Family Services-related sites in Las Vegas. The first hypothesis was that the model would display goodness-of-fit across various indices. The second hypothesis was that the model would better fit youths with below average intelligence (FSIQ = …

Weight-Based Microaggressions Experienced By Obese Women In Psychotherapy, Kerri Jo Schafer Aug 2014

Weight-Based Microaggressions Experienced By Obese Women In Psychotherapy, Kerri Jo Schafer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A large body of research demonstrates the existence of weight bias in healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and dietitians (Budd, Mariotti, Graff, & Falkenstein, 2011). Very few published studies examine mental health providers' attitudes toward obese clients, but a small body of existing data suggests that mental health providers attribute more negative personal attributes to fictional obese clients and rate them as having more severe symptoms than their average weight counterparts (Agell & Rothblum, 1991; Hassel, Amici, Thurston, & Gorsuch, 2001; Young & Powell, 1985). Given these findings, it is important to understand whether obese clients experience mental health professionals …

Auditory Processing Deficits In Bipolar Disorder With And Without A History Of Psychotic Features, Ryanna Verbiest Aug 2014

Auditory Processing Deficits In Bipolar Disorder With And Without A History Of Psychotic Features, Ryanna Verbiest

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Auditory perception deficits have been identified in schizophrenia and linked to dysfunction in primary auditory cortex. There is also evidence that primary auditory cortex abnormalities are associated with positive symptoms, particularly auditory hallucinations. Given the evidence that individuals with bipolar disorder frequently experience auditory hallucinations, it may be that individuals with bipolar disorder who also exhibit psychotic symptoms demonstrate similar impairment in auditory perception tasks. Additionally, these deficits may contribute to impaired social interactions, as they are likely to interfere with accurate perception of emotion from spoken words. The current study examined this matter by comparing performance of 50 individuals …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Platinum(Ii) And Platinum(Iv) Complexes Containing 4,4′--Disubstituted--2,2′--Bipyridine Ligands For The Treatment Of Cancer, Van Vo

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Three series of platinum(II) and platinum(IV) complexes containing 4,4′-disubstituted-2,2′-bipyridine ligands have been synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, mass spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The MTS cell proliferation assay was used to examine the in vitro anti-proliferative activities of these complexes in various human breast, lung, and prostate cancer cells. The cell's response to the complexes varies between different cell lines; however, the low EC50 values determined from the MTS data indicate that several of the complexes are much more potent than cisplatin.

Flow cytometric analysis of selected compounds revealed induction of apoptosis …

A Study Of Joinpoint Models For Longitudinal Data, Libo Zhou Aug 2014

A Study Of Joinpoint Models For Longitudinal Data, Libo Zhou

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In many medical studies, data are collected simultaneously on multiple biomarkers from each individual. Levels of these biomarkers are measured periodically over certain time duration, giving rise to longitudinal trajectories. The subjects under study may also be subject to dropout due to several competing causes, the likelihood of which may be affected by the levels of these biomarkers. In this dissertation, we investigate flexible Bayesian modeling of such data, taking into account any available covariate information as well as possible censoring of the drop-out times. We propose joint models for multiple biomarkers with multiple causes of dropout. Our proposed models …

Survival, Growth, And Settlement Of Dreissena Rostriformis Bugensis Veligers In Low And High Calcium Waters, Emma Ruhmann Aug 2014

Survival, Growth, And Settlement Of Dreissena Rostriformis Bugensis Veligers In Low And High Calcium Waters, Emma Ruhmann

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Populations ofDreissena rostriformis bugensis(quagga mussels) have continued to spread throughout the western United States since their discovery in the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead, NV-AZ in early 2007. Today, quagga mussel specific research is still lacking and the physicochemical characteristics of aquatic systems required by quagga mussels to successfully establish is not fully understood. This includes an absence of research in aquatic environments in the western United States and on quagga mussel veligers (larval stage). Calcium is considered the defining factor for determining if a lake or river is suitable for quagga mussel establishment. The minimum calcium threshold for invasion …

The purpose of this research was to study neutron spectroscopy using the EJ-299-33A plastic scintillator. This scintillator material provided a novel means of detection for fast neutrons, without the disadvantages of traditional liquid scintillation materials. EJ-299-33A provided a more durable option to these materials, making it less likely to be damaged during handling. Unlike liquid scintillators, this plastic scintillator was manufactured from a non-toxic material, making it safer to use, as well as easier to design detectors. The material was also manufactured with inherent pulse shape discrimination abilities, making it suitable for use in neutron detection.

The neutron spectral unfolding …

Dual Task Interference In Low-Level Abilities: The Role Of Working Memory And Effects Of Mathematics Anxiety, Alex Michael Moore Aug 2014

Dual Task Interference In Low-Level Abilities: The Role Of Working Memory And Effects Of Mathematics Anxiety, Alex Michael Moore

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Mathematics anxiety is a negative affective reaction to situations involving mathematical thought and is commonly believed to reduce cognitive functioning by impairing the efficient use of working memory resources. The conventional theory describes that the processing disadvantage associated with high levels of math anxiety increasingly impairs performance as working memory demands increase in a math task. Despite this convention, recent reports demonstrate that the high math anxious disadvantage can be measured in tasks that are relatively free of working memory assistance (Maloney, Ansari, & Fugelang, 2011; Maloney, Risko, Ansari, & Fugelsang, 2010). The present study examines these relatively low level …

Accessibility Of Tourism Websites: Attitudes And Behaviors, Filza Armadita Aug 2014

Accessibility Of Tourism Websites: Attitudes And Behaviors, Filza Armadita

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

While developed countries continue to shape an industry that has somehow become an integral part of the society, it only seems fair that the industry should provide equal access for every member of the society, recouping members of the market that is excluded without notice. The basic tier of service in the web interface is to provide information, before any booking systems and online purchasing (Siegel, 1997). In the travel industry, this basic tier is achieved in many different travel businesses, but consistently in destination marketing websites that solely promotes a tourism destination through delivering information about the specific location. …

On Rank Driven Dynamical Systems, J. J. P. Veerman, F. J. Prieto Aug 2014

On Rank Driven Dynamical Systems, J. J. P. Veerman, F. J. Prieto

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate a class of models related to the Bak-Sneppen model, initially proposed to study evolution. The BS model is extremely simple and yet captures some forms of “complex behavior” such as self-organized criticality that is often observed in physical and biological systems. In this model, random fitnesses in [0, 1] are associated to agents located at the vertices of a graph G. Their fitnesses are ranked from worst (0) to best (1). At every time-step the agent with the worst fitness and some others with a priori given rank probabilities are replaced by new agents with random fitnesses. We …

Quantifying Habitat Relationships Of Songbirds In Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides) And Other Montane Communities Of The Jarbidge Mountains, Nevada, Kevin Patrick Glueckert Aug 2014

Quantifying Habitat Relationships Of Songbirds In Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides) And Other Montane Communities Of The Jarbidge Mountains, Nevada, Kevin Patrick Glueckert

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) woodlands are expected to be sensitive to climate change, and have declined in parts of the West. Great Basin mountain ranges may be near the limits of aspen’s climatic threshold, in terms of temperature and aridity, and thus are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Birds associating with aspen are likely to undergo regional population fluctuations and changes in distribution as a result of changes in aspen availability or distribution. Thus, understanding the habitat relationships of avian communities in aspen and other montane cover types is important for tracking the impacts of future landscape change. …

Effects Of Leptin On Established Glioblastoma Cell Lines, Nicholas J. Cook Aug 2014

Effects Of Leptin On Established Glioblastoma Cell Lines, Nicholas J. Cook

All NMU Master's Theses

Glioblastoma is one of the most difficult cancers to treat because it is aggressive and resistant to therapy. The discovery of new therapeutic targets is drastically needed as zero improved treatment options have been added to the standard of care over the past 15 years. New and promising therapeutic targets are arising from psychosocial and environmental enrichment studies examining the role of stress in cancer progression. In animal models, eustress appears to slow tumor growth and recurrence resulting in increased overall survival and progression free survival while distress is associated with decreased overall survival. The cellular pathways activated by eustress …
