Complexity And Familiarity Enhance Single-Trial Detectability Of Imagined Movements With Electroencephalography, Raechelle M. Gibson, Srivas Chennu, Adrian M. Owen, Damian Cruse

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Objective: We sought to determine whether the sensorimotor rhythms (SMR) elicited during motor imagery (MI) of complex and familiar actions could be more reliably detected with electroencephalography (EEG), and subsequently classified on a single-trial basis, than those elicited during relatively simpler imagined actions. Methods: Groups of healthy volunteers, including experienced pianists and ice hockey players, performed MI of varying complexity and familiarity. Their electroencephalograms were recorded and compared using brain-computer interface (BCI) approaches and spectral analyses. Results: Relative to simple MI, significantly more participants produced classifiable SMR for complex MI. During MI of performance of a complex musical piece, the …

Exploring The Complexity Of Intellectual Disability In Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Aniruddho Chokroborty-Hoque, Bonnie Alberry, Shiva M. Singh Aug 2014

Exploring The Complexity Of Intellectual Disability In Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Aniruddho Chokroborty-Hoque, Bonnie Alberry, Shiva M. Singh

Biology Publications

Brain development in mammals is long lasting. It begins early during embryonic growth and is finalized in early adulthood. This progression represents a delicate choreography of molecular, cellular, and physiological processes initiated and directed by the fetal genotype in close interaction with environment. Not surprisingly, most aberrations in brain functioning including intellectual disability (ID) are attributed to either gene(s), or environment or the interaction of the two. The ensuing complexity has made the assessment of this choreography, ever challenging. A model to assess this complexity has used a mouse model (C57BL/6J or B6) that is subjected to prenatal alcohol exposure. …

The Overwintering Biology Of The Acorn Weevil, Curculio Glandium In Southwestern Ontario., Hiroko Udaka, Brent J Sinclair Aug 2014

The Overwintering Biology Of The Acorn Weevil, Curculio Glandium In Southwestern Ontario., Hiroko Udaka, Brent J Sinclair

Biology Publications

The acorn weevil, Curculio glandium, is a widespread predator of acorns in eastern North America that overwinters in the soil as a larva. It is possible that low temperatures limit its northern geographic range, so we determined the cold tolerance strategy, seasonal variation in cold tolerance, and explored the physiological plasticity of overwintering larvae. Weevil larvae were collected from acorns of red and bur oak from Pelee Island, southwestern Ontario in fall 2010 and 2011. C. glandium larvae are freeze avoidant and larvae collected from bur oak acorns had lower supercooling points (SCPs: -7.6±0.36°C, LT50: -7.2°C) than those collected from …

Transmission: Premium Television Characters Outside Of The Gender Binary, Daniel L. Ketchum Aug 2014

Transmission: Premium Television Characters Outside Of The Gender Binary, Daniel L. Ketchum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Five fictional characters have emerged on the U.S. premium-pay-cable channels that blur the traditional male-or-female gender divide. The basics of queer theory (sex, gender, orientation, and transgender) and critical/cultural studies (encoding, decoding, and reading a text) are explained as a basis for the analysis of the characters, which seeks to answer the research question: does the premium-pay-cable television format offer truly empathetic non-binary transgender characters that challenge the dominant American ideologies about gender identity and expression? If so, how? If not, why not?

Shane McCutcheon from Showtime’s lesbian melodrama The L Word (2004- 2010), Lafayette Reynolds from HBO’s supernatural drama-comedy …

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Imaging And Probes, Hanan B. Elajaili Aug 2014

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Imaging And Probes, Hanan B. Elajaili

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

EPR imaging at low frequency is an important method to measure in vivo physiology. Because native paramagnetic species exist at low concentrations in living systems, exogenous paramagnetic species are needed for in vivo EPR. Selection of the appropriate EPR probe allows the experimenter to obtain information about the environment of the imaged probe and its spatial distribution. Relaxation times for several nitroxide radicals were studied with the aim of understanding the relaxation mechanisms, which provides criteria for design of suitable in vivo imaging probes.

Amino-substituted trityl radicals have the potential to monitor pH in vivo, and the suitability for this …

Global Population-Specific Variation In Mirna Associated With Cancer Risk And Clinical Biomarkers, Renata Rawlings-Goss, Michael Campbell, Sarah Tishkoff Aug 2014

Global Population-Specific Variation In Mirna Associated With Cancer Risk And Clinical Biomarkers, Renata Rawlings-Goss, Michael Campbell, Sarah Tishkoff

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Background: MiRNA expression profiling is being actively investigated as a clinical biomarker and diagnostic tool to detect multiple cancer types and stages as well as other complex diseases. Initial investigations, however, have not comprehensively taken into account genetic variability affecting miRNA expression and/or function in populations of different ethnic backgrounds. Therefore, more complete surveys of miRNA genetic variability are needed to assess global patterns of miRNA variation within and between diverse human populations and their effect on clinically relevant miRNA genes.

Gene-Environment Interactions In Human Health: Case Studies And Strategies For Developing New Paradigms And Research Methodologies, Fatimah Linda Collier Jackson Aug 2014

Gene-Environment Interactions In Human Health: Case Studies And Strategies For Developing New Paradigms And Research Methodologies, Fatimah Linda Collier Jackson

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

THE SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS OF GENES AND THE ENVIRONMENT ON HEALTH ARE EXPLORED IN THREE CASE STUDIES: adult lactase persistence, autism spectrum disorders, and the metabolic syndrome, providing examples of the interactive complexities underlying these phenotypes. Since the phenotypes are the initial targets of evolutionary processes, understanding the specific environmental contexts of the genetic, epigenetic, and environmental changes associated with these phenotypes is essential in predicting their health implications. Robust databases must be developed on the local scale to deconstruct both the population substructure and the unique components of the environment that stimulate geographically specific changes in gene expression patterns. To …

An Examination Of University Speech Codes’ Constitutionality And Their Impact On High-Level Discourse, Benjamin Welch Aug 2014

An Examination Of University Speech Codes’ Constitutionality And Their Impact On High-Level Discourse, Benjamin Welch

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

The First Amendment – which guarantees the right to freedom of religion, of the press, to assemble, and petition to the government for redress of grievances – is under attack at institutions of higher learning in the United States of America. Beginning in the late 1980s, universities have crafted “speech codes” or “codes of conduct” that prohibit on campus certain forms of expression that would otherwise be constitutionally guaranteed. Examples of such polices could include prohibiting “telling a joke that conveys sexism,” or “content that may negatively affect an individual’s self-esteem.” Despite the alarming number of institutions that employ such …

Teacher Expectations Of Students In A Predominantly African American School District, Durand Duron Payton Aug 2014

Teacher Expectations Of Students In A Predominantly African American School District, Durand Duron Payton

Dissertations

Wong and Wong (2004) reported teachers‟ perceptions could become a self-fulfilling prophecy when addressing the students. According to Haycock (2001) once teachers‟ perceptions had developed, even if they were inaccurate, teachers would begin to act as if their beliefs were factual. By acting as though the beliefs were real, teachers could essentially cause their perceptions to materialize into the expectations of students. The purpose of this study is to explore teachers‟ expectations of students in a predominantly African American school district. Ferguson (1998) had considered the behaviors in which teachers' perceptions of the students‟ impact their expectations towards the students. …

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) has been a useful initial diagnostic tool in the evaluation of pulmonary complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT); however, the diagnostic sensitivity, prevalence, and outcome after BAL versus lung biopsy (LB) in pediatric HSCT patients remains to be determined. We reviewed 193 pediatric HSCT recipients who underwent a total of 235 HSCTs. Sixty-five patients (34%) underwent a total of 101 BALs for fever, respiratory distress, and/or pulmonary infiltrates on chest radiograph and/or computed tomography scan. The 1-year probability of undergoing BAL was 43.0% after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) and 8.5% after autologous stem cell transplantation …

Investigation Of The Flow And Fate Of Nitrate In Epikarst At The Savoy Experimental Watershed, Northwest Arkansas, Jozef Laincz Aug 2014

Investigation Of The Flow And Fate Of Nitrate In Epikarst At The Savoy Experimental Watershed, Northwest Arkansas, Jozef Laincz

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many karst aquifers are at high risk of nitrate contamination due to a combination of vulnerable geology characterized by thin soils and conduit flow, and excess inputs of nutrients from animal feeding operations. One zone that is present in many karst regions and could play an important role in nitrate attenuation due to properties such as increased residence time and matrix-water contact is the upper, weathered portion of karst, the epikarst. However, the understanding of this role is lacking, and the objective of this dissertation was to elucidate it. The fate of nitrate in the epikarst was traced along a …

The Influence Of Auditory-Motor Coupling On Fractal Dynamics In Human Gait, Nathaniel Hunt, Denise Mcgrath, Nikolaos Stergiou Aug 2014

The Influence Of Auditory-Motor Coupling On Fractal Dynamics In Human Gait, Nathaniel Hunt, Denise Mcgrath, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Humans exhibit an innate ability to synchronize their movements to music. The field of gait rehabilitation has sought to capitalize on this phenomenon by invoking patients to walk in time to rhythmic auditory cues with a view to improving pathological gait. However, the temporal structure of the auditory cue, and hence the temporal structure of the target behavior has not been sufficiently explored. This study reveals the plasticity of auditory-motor coupling in human walking in relation to ‘complex’ auditory cues. The authors demonstrate that auditory-motor coupling can be driven by different coloured auditory noise signals (e.g. white, brown), shifting the …

Acoustic Communication In The Temperate Treefrogs Pseudacris Crucifer And Acris Crepitans, John Keating Aug 2014

Acoustic Communication In The Temperate Treefrogs Pseudacris Crucifer And Acris Crepitans, John Keating

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spring peepers and cricket frogs produce advertisement calls to attract females. As ectotherms their body temperatures are greatly affected by ambient air temperature. Some characteristics of their advertisement calls are correlated with temperature. I analyzed advertisement calls of both species recorded in western-central Indiana. I compared call characteristic correlations with temperature found in our populations to those in populations in other geographic areas and found similar trends throughout the range of both species. Secondly, I examined aggressive calls in the spring peepers. Aggressive calls are used in male-male interactions, and in the spring peeper are a distinct call type different …

Tales And Trials Of Love: A Bilingual Edition And Study, Kelly Digby Peebles Aug 2014

Tales And Trials Of Love: A Bilingual Edition And Study, Kelly Digby Peebles

Publications

In Tales and Trials of Love, Jeanne Flore (whose identity remains a mystery) depicts an ideal notion of love as a mutually beneficial relationship upheld in a world governed by Venus and Cupid. Jeanne Flore urges her readers-and the characters within the tales-to aspire to achieve and vindicate their right to attain mutual love. These seven tales illustrate various obstacles to that ideal and the consequences of denouncing Cupid's sovereignty. This first bilingual edition situates these tales within the vibrant cultural context of Renaissance Lyon and demonstrates how they respond to contemporary literary conversations, including the querelle des Amyes …

A promoter polymorphism of the osteopontin (OPN) gene (rs28357094) has been associated with multiple inflammatory states, severity of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and muscle size in healthy young adults. We sought to define the mechanism of action of the polymorphism, using allele-specific in vitroreporter assays in muscle cells, and a genotype-stratified intervention in healthy controls. In vitro reporter constructs showed the G allele to respond to estrogen treatment, whereas the T allele showed no transcriptional response. Young adult volunteers (n = 187) were enrolled into a baseline study, and subjects with specific rs28357094 genotypes enrolled into an eccentric …

The origin of the turtle shell over 200 million years ago greatly modified the amniote body plan, and the morphological plasticity of the shell has promoted the adaptive radiation of turtles. The shell, comprising a dorsal carapace and a ventral plastron, is a layered structure formed by basal endochondral axial skeletal elements (ribs, vertebrae) and plates of bone, which are overlain by keratinous ectodermal scutes. Studies of turtle development have mostly focused on the bones of the shell; however, the genetic regulation of the epidermal scutes has not been investigated. Here, we show that scutes develop from an array of …

A Holobiont Birth Narrative: The Epigenetic Transmission Of The Human Microbiome, Scott F. Gilbert Aug 2014

A Holobiont Birth Narrative: The Epigenetic Transmission Of The Human Microbiome, Scott F. Gilbert

Biology Faculty Works

This essay plans to explore, expand, and re-tell the human birth narrative. Usually, human birth narratives focus on the origins of a new individual, focusing on the mother and fetus. This essay discusses birth as the origin of a new community. For not only is the eukaryotic body being reproduced, but so also are the bodies of its symbiotic microbes and so is the set of relationships between these organic components. Several parts of the new narrative are surprising: (1) bacterial symbionts might cause some of the characteristics of pregnancy and prepare a symbiotic community for transfer; (2) the first …

Insulin-Resistant Rats Display Enhanced Nicotine Reward Following A High-Fat Diet Regimen., Laura O'Dell Aug 2014

Insulin-Resistant Rats Display Enhanced Nicotine Reward Following A High-Fat Diet Regimen., Laura O'Dell

Departmental Papers (Psych)

Tobacco use among persons displaying type II diabetes exponentially increases negative health consequences and mortality rates. Especially troubling, diabetic persons who smoke display reduced rates of tobacco cessation as compared to non-diabetic smokers. Diabetes is a metabolic syndrome that consists of insulin resistance due to disruptions in insulin signaling. Insulin has been shown to modulate mesolimbic reward circuitry in response to drugs of abuse, such as nicotine. This study utilized the conditioned place preference paradigm (CPP) to examine nicotine reward in a rat model of insulin resistance induced by the consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD). Rats were placed on …

Interferons: Success In Anti-Viral Immunotherapy, Fan Ching Lin, Howard A. Young Aug 2014

Interferons: Success In Anti-Viral Immunotherapy, Fan Ching Lin, Howard A. Young

United States Public Health Resources

The interferons (IFNs) are glycoproteins with strong antiviral activities that represent one of the first lines of host defense against invading pathogens. These proteins are classified into three groups, Type I, II and III IFNs, based on the structure of their receptors on the cell surface. Due to their ability to modulate immune responses, they have become attractive therapeutic options to control chronic virus infections. In combination with other drugs, Type I IFNs are considered as "standard of care" in suppressing Hepatitis C (HCV) and Hepatitis B (HBV) infections, while Type III IFN has generated encouraging results as a treatment …

The New Steam: On Digitization, Decentralization, And Disruption, Deven R. Desai Aug 2014

The New Steam: On Digitization, Decentralization, And Disruption, Deven R. Desai

UC Law Journal

Digitization is the new steam. Steam allowed us to leverage like never before and spawned a series of new offerings and new needs. The steam era started with many competitors and inventors and ended with only a few concentrated winners. The winners contributed vast amounts to society and spawned a need for new laws, from antitrust to product liability to intellectual property to securities, and more. Just as steam disrupted old industries and fostered new ones, digitization is providing the same changes today. Digitization opens the door to decentralized production, lower costs, and disruption of incumbents, but digitization does not …

Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis Caused By Naegleria Fowleri: An Old Enemy Presenting New Challenges, Ruqaiyyah Siddiqui, Naveed Ahmed Khan

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

First discovered in 1899, Naegleria fowleri is a protist pathogen, known to infect the central nervous system and produce primary amoebic meningoencephalitis. The most distressing aspect is that the fatality rate has remained more than 95%, despite our advances in antimicrobial chemotherapy and supportive care. Although rare worldwide, most cases have been reported in the United States, Australia, and Europe (France). A large number of cases in developing countries go unnoticed. In particular, religious, recreational, and cultural practices such as ritual ablution and/or purifications, Ayurveda, and the use of neti pots for nasal irrigation can contribute to this devastating infection. …
