Characterization Of Fall Leaves As A Source Of Cellulosic Ethanol, Justin Burum Aug 2014

Characterization Of Fall Leaves As A Source Of Cellulosic Ethanol, Justin Burum

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Ethanol is becoming increasingly popular as a fossil fuel additive or substitute. However, current production of ethanol from corn impacts food prices and appears to have an overall low net yield. New sources need to be identified and new processes developed for ethanol production. Cellulosic ethanol is one such new source. Plant material contains a large amount of cellulose and other polysaccharides which are potential feed stocks for ethanol production. The purpose of this experiment was to characterize the polysaccharide, lignin, and ash content of fall leaves to estimate their potential for ethanol production. A slight modification of the NREL …

Cytochrome P-450, family 2, subfamily c, polypeptide 44 (Cyp2c44) epoxygenase metabolizes arachidonic acid (AA) to epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) in kidney and vascular tissues. In the present study, we used real-time quantitative PCR techniques to examine the effect of high salt or high K(+) (HK) intake on the expression of Cyp2c44, a major Cyp2c epoxygenase in the mouse kidney. We detected Cyp2c44 in the proximal convoluted tubule, thick ascending limb, distal convoluted tubule (DCT)/connecting tubule (CNT), and collecting duct (CD). A high-salt diet increased the expression of Cyp2c44 in the thick ascending limb and DCT/CNT but not in the proximal convoluted …

High Mobility Group Box-1 (Hmgb1) Participates In The Pathogenesis Of Alcoholic Liver Disease (Ald), Xiaodong Ge, Daniel J. Antoine, Yongke Lu, Elena Arriazu, Tung-Ming Leung, Arielle L. Klepper, Andrea D. Branch, Maria Isabel Fiel, Natalia Nieto

Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology

Growing clinical and experimental evidence suggests that sterile inflammation contributes to alcoholic liver disease (ALD). High mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) is highly induced during liver injury; however, a link between this alarmin and ALD has not been established. Thus, the aim of this work was to determine whether HMGB1 contributes to the pathogenesis of ALD. Liver biopsies from patients with ALD showed a robust increase in HMGB1 expression and translocation, which correlated with disease stage, compared with healthy explants. Similar findings were observed in chronic ethanol-fed wild-type (WT) mice. Using primary cell culture, we validated the ability of hepatocytes from …

Lim Kinase Regulation Of Cytoskeletal Dynamics Is Required For Salivary Gland Branching Morphogenesis, Shayoni Ray, Joseph A. Fanti, Diego P. Macedo, Melinda Larsen Aug 2014

Lim Kinase Regulation Of Cytoskeletal Dynamics Is Required For Salivary Gland Branching Morphogenesis, Shayoni Ray, Joseph A. Fanti, Diego P. Macedo, Melinda Larsen

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Coordinated actin microfilament and microtubule dynamics is required for salivary gland development, although the mechanisms by which they contribute to branching morphogenesis are not defined. Because LIM kinase (LIMK) regulates both actin and microtubule organization, we investigated the role of LIMK signaling in mouse embryonic submandibular salivary glands using ex vivo organ cultures. Both LIMK 1 and 2 were necessary for branching morphogenesis and functioned to promote epithelial early- and late-stage cleft progression through regulation of both microfilaments and microtubules. LIMK-dependent regulation of these cytoskeletal systems was required to control focal adhesion protein– dependent fibronectin assembly and integrin β1 activation, …

Synthesis Of Meso- And Macro-Porous Materials As Cobalt Based Catalyst Support And Their Application For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, Peng Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Several self-supported and metal oxide supported cobalt Fisher-Tropsch (FT) catalysts were prepared applying incipient wetness impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by TPR, adsorption-desorption, XRD, TEM and SEM. The gas products were characterized by GC. The effect of support was investigated. The selfsupported 3D ordered macro-porous (3DOM) Fe-Co and self-supported 2D ordered mesoporous catalyst showed low or no activity under typical F-T reaction conditions. The 3DOM Al2O3 supported cobalt catalyst showed much higher CO conversion and C4+ selectivity than conventional Co/Gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. However, the 3DOM Co/Al2O3 prepared by incorporated method showed no activity. The supported Co/SBA-15 performed better CO conversion …

N-Methylimidazole Promotes The Reaction Of Homophthalic Anhydride With Imines, J. Liu, Z. Wang, A. Levin, T. J. Emge, Paul R. Rablen, D. M. Floyd, S. Knapp Aug 2014

N-Methylimidazole Promotes The Reaction Of Homophthalic Anhydride With Imines, J. Liu, Z. Wang, A. Levin, T. J. Emge, Paul R. Rablen, D. M. Floyd, S. Knapp

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The addition of N-methylimidazole (NMI) to the reaction of homophthalic anhydride with imines such as pyridine-3-carboxaldehyde-N-trifluoroethylimine (9) reduces the amount of elimination byproduct and improves the yield of the formal cycloadduct, tetrahydroisoquinolonic carboxylate 10. Carboxanilides of such compounds are of interest as potential antimalarial agents. A mechanism that rationalizes the role of NMI is proposed, and a gram-scale procedure for the synthesis and resolution of 10 is also described.

Lipid Extraction From Scenedesmus Sp. Microalgae For Biodiesel Production Using Hot Compressed Hexane, Hee-Yong Shin, Jae-Hun Ryu, Seong-Youl Bae, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Mark Crocker

Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications

Lipid extraction from Scenedesmus sp. microalgae using hot compressed hexane (HCH) was investigated. Extraction performance was evaluated near the critical point of hexane and was compared with that of hexane extraction performed at room temperature and pressure, and the Bligh and Dyer extraction method. Experimental data showed that HCH significantly improves the lipid yield and rate of lipid extraction compared to the use of hexane at ambient conditions. High yields of biodiesel-convertible lipid fractions were rapidly achieved at the critical point of hexane, at a level comparable to that of the Bligh and Dyer method.

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is native to North America and has spread to Asia and Europe. Lately, mutualistic relationship has been suggested between the pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus the causal nematode agent of PWD, and bacteria. In countries where PWN occurs, nematodes from diseased trees were reported to carry bacteria from several genera. However no data exists for the United States. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diversity of the bacterial community carried by B. xylophilus, isolated from different Pinus spp. with PWD in Nebraska, United States. The bacteria carried by PWN belonged to Gammaproteobacteria …

3d Scanning Methodology To Characterize Surface Area And Envelope Volume Of Poultry, Livestock, And Equine, Emile Joseph Koury

Theses and Dissertations

Broiler birds have drastically increased in size over the past few decades through improvements in genetic selection. Physical measurements such as surface area, volume and physical dimensions are needed information in the construction of animal facilities and developing management guidelines. The objective of this study was to develop a three-dimensional scanning methodology to characterize surface area and envelope volume of poultry, livestock, and equine using a commercially available 3D digitizer system. The digitizing system used phase shift moiré to capture images of three test cylinders, four fiberglass animal models, and a live broiler bird. These images were spliced into physical …

Engineering Biosensors For Short-Chain Alcohols, Yu Xia Aug 2014

Engineering Biosensors For Short-Chain Alcohols, Yu Xia

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Biofuel is a promising substitute for fossil fuel and the research of biofuel production has been extensively conducted during the recent years. Great efforts have been made to create many types of the fuel production hosts. However, effective approaches for high specificity and high throughput screening of the fuel production strains are still lacking. The cellular stress response is one universal defense mechanism when a microbial cell is exposed to an unfavorable substance or environment. It triggers a series of downstream responses when a cell senses certain chemicals. Transcriptional factors are widely used in living organisms to regulate gene expression. …

Serotonergic Signaling Pathways That Suppress Amyloid Beta In Mouse Models Of Ad, Jonathan Robert Fisher Aug 2014

Serotonergic Signaling Pathways That Suppress Amyloid Beta In Mouse Models Of Ad, Jonathan Robert Fisher

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is one of the most devastating things one can hear. This terrible disease robs people of their ability to remember cherished events as their brains become riddled with beta amyloid plaques. Alzheimer's is especially terrifying because there currently are no effective treatments for slowing or stopping the disease. However, recent research has shown that plaque formation is correlated to concentrations of amyloid beta. This discovery suggests that limiting amyloid beta production could potentially halt the disease. One promising avenue for slowing amyloid beta production is serotonergic signaling.

This dissertation presents evidence for a direct sequence …

A shape invariant model for functions f1,...,fn specifies that each individual function fi can be related to a common shape function g through the relation fi(x) = aig(cix + di) + bi. We consider a flexible mixture model that allows multiple shape functions g1,...,gK, where each fi is a shape invariant transformation of one of those gK. We derive an MCMC algorithm for fitting the model using Bayesian Adaptive Regression Splines (BARS), propose …

Experimental Assessment Of Butomus Umbellatus L. Growth And Expansion Using A Mesocosm Approach, Christian Carter Aug 2014

Experimental Assessment Of Butomus Umbellatus L. Growth And Expansion Using A Mesocosm Approach, Christian Carter

Theses and Dissertations

Over the last century, flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus L.: Butomaceae) has escaped its native Eurasian range and has become a problematic species in North America. As an aquatic invasive species, flowering rush has degraded native wetlands and has interfered with human water usage. Although experimental work has been done regarding the reproductive biology of the species, few empirical studies regarding the ecology of the species have been conducted. The research reported here demonstrates that flowering rush is capable of aggressive clonal growth and propagation, and can perform well along a depth gradient from zero to 132cm. Proper management and control …

American Black Bear Distribution And Density In Missouri, Clay Michael Wilton Aug 2014

American Black Bear Distribution And Density In Missouri, Clay Michael Wilton

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding species’ distribution, density, and sources of bias in population estimates is critical for reliable conservation strategies. I assessed American black bear distribution, density, and abundance in southern Missouri. Using anecdotal occurrence data, I demonstrated support for a northward trend in extent of occurrences over time and a positive correlation between bear distribution and human–bear incidents. I also used GPS telemetry and camera traps to investigate detection biases in DNA hair snare methods and tested efficacy of two sampling designs for estimating density using spatial capture-recapture models. Results demonstrated that detection probability decreased following a negative asymptotic relationship with decreasing …

The calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is abundant in the brain, where it makes important contributions to synaptic organization and homeostasis, including playing an essential role in synaptic plasticity and memory. Four genes encode isoforms of CaMKII (α, β, δ, γ), with CaMKIIα and CaMKIIβ highly expressed in the brain. Decades of molecular and cellular research, as well as the use of a large number of CaMKIIα mutant mouse lines, have provided insight into the pivotal roles of CaMKIIα in brain plasticity and cognition. However, less is known about the CaMKIIβ isoform. We report the development and extensive behavioral and …

Spectral Band Selection For Ensemble Classification Of Hyperspectral Images With Applications To Agriculture And Food Safety, Sathishkumar Samiappan Aug 2014

Spectral Band Selection For Ensemble Classification Of Hyperspectral Images With Applications To Agriculture And Food Safety, Sathishkumar Samiappan

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, an ensemble non-uniform spectral feature selection and a kernel density decision fusion framework are proposed for the classification of hyperspectral data using a support vector machine classifier. Hyperspectral data has more number of bands and they are always highly correlated. To utilize the complete potential, a feature selection step is necessary. In an ensemble situation, there are mainly two challenges: (1) Creating diverse set of classifiers in order to achieve a higher classification accuracy when compared to a single classifier. This can either be achieved by having different classifiers or by having different subsets of features for …
