A Study Of Nucleosome Sequence And Relative Position To Gene Transcription Start Sites In Yeast And Human Genomes, Greg Wright
A Study Of Nucleosome Sequence And Relative Position To Gene Transcription Start Sites In Yeast And Human Genomes, Greg Wright
Theses
The positions of nucleosomes were studied to determine the relationship between sequence and relative position to transcription start sites. Five sets of nucleosome data were analyzed from yeast and human cell lines; the nucleosomes were categorized based on the weak and strong dinucleotide frequency within the major and minor grooves of the nucleosomal DNA. The relative positions and density of nucleosomes were determined around transcription start sites and compared to gene expression data. The yeast data sets consisted of different collection techniques and cell environments to confirm that the nucleosome tendencies were not a factor of a particular data set. …
Searching For Sub-Cultural Systems During The Terminal Archaic: An Examination Of Burial Rituals And Socio-Economic Networks In Southern New England, Heather C. Cruz
Searching For Sub-Cultural Systems During The Terminal Archaic: An Examination Of Burial Rituals And Socio-Economic Networks In Southern New England, Heather C. Cruz
Doctoral Dissertations
Broad-tool cultural activities and ritual behaviors, across southern New England, have characteristically been examined as attributes of a mono-cultural system, which expressed little cultural variation throughout the region during the Terminal Archaic Period (3,700–2,700 BP). Much of this stems from discussions dating back to the 1960s and 1970s, which generalized Narrow-Stemmed and Broad-tool cultures to ascertain whether the two existed side-by-side within a multi-cultural neighborhood 3,700 years ago. The idea that smaller, sub-cultural populations may have existed within the broader tradition has been largely ignored or overlooked by archaeologists. Concentrating on Broad-tool socio-economic exchange systems, lithic selection and deposit and …

A systems-biology approach to complex disease (such as cancer) is now complementing traditional experience-based approaches, which have typically been invasive and expensive. The rapid progress in biomedical knowledge is enabling the targeting of disease with therapies that are precise, proactive, preventive, and personalized. In this paper, we summarize and classify models of systems biology and model checking tools, which have been used to great success in computational biology and related fields. We demonstrate how these models and tools have been used to study some of the twelve biochemical pathways implicated in but not unique to pancreatic cancer, and conclude that …
What Can Individual Differences Reveal About Face Processing?, Galit Yovel, Jeremy B. Wilmer, Brad Duchaine
What Can Individual Differences Reveal About Face Processing?, Galit Yovel, Jeremy B. Wilmer, Brad Duchaine
Dartmouth Scholarship
Faces are probably the most widely studied visual stimulus. Most research on face processing has used a group-mean approach that averages behavioral or neural responses to faces across individuals and treats variance between individuals as noise. However, individual differences in face processing can provide valuable information that complements and extends findings from group-mean studies. Here we demonstrate that studies employing an individual differences approach—examining associations and dissociations across individuals—can answer fundamental questions about the way face processing operates. In particular these studies allow us to associate and dissociate the mechanisms involved in face processing, tie behavioral face processing mechanisms to …

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Multialleic Migration-Selection Models, Chad N. Vidden
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Population ecology is concerned with the growth and decay of specific populations. This field has a variety of applications ranging from evolution and survival at the environmental level to the spread of infectious disease at the cellular and molecular levels. Many ecological circumstances require the use of mathematical methods and reasoning in order to acquire better knowledge of the issue at hand. This study considered and analyzed multiple different mathematical models of population dynamics along with their purposes. This foundation was then applied in order to explore the migration of populations from one isolated region to another along with the …

Vascular Architecture Of The Liver In Shr And Wky Rats, Charalette Mathwig, Kenneth Willaert
Vascular Architecture Of The Liver In Shr And Wky Rats, Charalette Mathwig, Kenneth Willaert
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The liver is a highly complex vascular organ containing an intricate network of arteries, arterioles, portal veins, veins, venules, and capillaries. This complex network could change in situations related to vascular disease such as hypertension. We examined the vasculature in rat livers by scanning electron microscopy. The tissue was prepared by perfusing either Mercox resin or polyurethane resin into the vasculature. Once the resin polymerized, each liver was placed in concentrated potassium hydroxide to corrode the tissue from the vascular casts. The casts were critical point dried, sputter coated with gold-palladium, and viewed by scanning electron microscopy. Examination of the …
Men, Women And Children For Sale: The Dichotomy Of Human Trafficking In The United States And Abroad, Elizabeth Kolbe
Men, Women And Children For Sale: The Dichotomy Of Human Trafficking In The United States And Abroad, Elizabeth Kolbe
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Living in Thailand in 2005 opened my eyes to the real plight of exploited peoples around the world. I was able to experience first-hand the economic and social issues facing potential victims of human trafficking. According to Anti-Slavery International, there are an estimated 200 million people being held in slavery worldwide. Approximately 800,000 people per year are being trafficked across international borders and forced into slavery. Like most Americans, I believed this is a horrible problem facing only people of developing countries. Last year I heard Chong Kim describe her traumatizing experience of being trafficked within the United States. Over …

Gender Differences And Depression In Self-Disclosure On The Therapeutic Relationship, Nicole Rubio
Gender Differences And Depression In Self-Disclosure On The Therapeutic Relationship, Nicole Rubio
Theses and Dissertations
The counseling relationship is a major factor in promoting change from the client in the therapeutic relationship. Additional factors contributing to or hindering this relationship including gender, depressive symptomology, and disclosure tendency, collectively require further attention to facilitate improved treatment outcomes in counseling. Male and female college students (N = 212) completed measures that assessed depression symptomology and disclosure tendency. It was hypothesized that female college students would engage in greater levels of self-disclosure than male students and that greater depressive symptomology would equate to a lesser degree of disclosure tendency. The employed ANOVA model found no interaction between gender, …
Control Of Magnetic Particles In Centrifugal Microfludic Platforms / Sogol Givehchi, Givehchi Sogol
Control Of Magnetic Particles In Centrifugal Microfludic Platforms / Sogol Givehchi, Givehchi Sogol
Student Works (2010-2019)
Centrifugal microfluidic platforms, also known as CD-like microfluidics, are types of lab-on-a-chip devices that employ centrifugal force to pump liquid between micro chambers via micro channels. Magnetic particles can be used in centrifugal microfluidic platforms for bimolecular assays such as the enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA), polymer chain reaction (PCR) and other applications. Magnetic particles can act as mobile solid supports for bio reactions due to their specific surface functionalization. For this reason, trapping, transport and detection of magnetic particles are very important operations in centrifugal microfluidic platforms for research applications and clinical diagnostics. Magnetic forces are required for controlling …
Simple, Label-Free And Non-Instrumented Analyte Quantitation By Flow Distance Measurement In Microfluidic Devices, Debolina Chatterjee
Simple, Label-Free And Non-Instrumented Analyte Quantitation By Flow Distance Measurement In Microfluidic Devices, Debolina Chatterjee
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid determination of the concentrations of molecules related to diseases can provide timely information for treatment options. However, most biomarker quantitation methods require costly and complex equipment. On the other hand, point-of-care systems have less complex instrumentation needs than laboratory-based equipment, but often provide less information; for example, biomarker presence or absence instead of concentration. A complete analysis setup addressing key limitations of both laboratory-based and portable systems is highly desirable. I developed microfluidic devices with visual inspection readout of a target’s concentration from microliter volumes of solution flowed into a microchannel. Microchannels are formed within polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and the …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Background: Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is being developed as a bioenergy crop for many temperate regions of the world. One way to increase biomass yields is to move southern adapted lowland cultivars to more northern latitudes. However, many southerly adapted switchgrass germplasm can suffer significant winter kill in northerly climes.
Materials and Methods: Here, we have applied next-generation sequencing in combination with biochemical analyses to query the metabolism of crowns and rhizomes obtained from two contrasting switchgrass cultivars. Crowns and rhizomes from field-grown lowland (cv Kanlow) and upland (cv Summer) switchgrass cultivars were collected from three randomly selected post-flowering …

Relationships Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders And Their Fathers, Terry Keller, Julie Ramisch, Marsha Carolan
The Qualitative Report
This phenomenological study investigated the relationships between 7 fathers and their sons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Seven major themes emerged: Shared Activities, Developmental Sensitivity, Emotional Understanding, Fighting the Label, Fatherhood Expectations, Parent Responsibility, and Fatherhood Isolation. Fathers were sensitive to their sons’ emotional needs and developmental milestones. Clinicians can help fathers to develop appropriate relationships with their children that involve shared activities. Clinicians can also assist fathers in coping with isolation and expectations regarding fatherhood, developing desired fatherhood roles, and finding appropriate shared activities with their children.

Mindfulness For Educators: Fostering Awareness And Resilience In The Classroom, Morgan R. Bursiel
Mindfulness For Educators: Fostering Awareness And Resilience In The Classroom, Morgan R. Bursiel
Education
Teaching in the public schools is demanding work, and addressing teacher stress in the classroom remains a significant challenge in education. Increasing numbers of children come to school unprepared and often at risk of mental health and behavioral concerns, yet teachers are expected to provide emotionally responsive support to all students, manage larger classroom sizes, and meet the growing academic demands imposed by standardized testing. Despite these high expectations, teachers rarely receive training to address and skillfully handle the social-emotional challenges of their profession. A current examination of teacher educational and in-service professional development activities indicates that little professional development …
Nature-Based Tourism Operator Response To Environmental Change In Juneau, Alaska, Kristin Timm
Nature-Based Tourism Operator Response To Environmental Change In Juneau, Alaska, Kristin Timm
Natural Resources
Increasing temperatures are projected to have a positive effect on the length of Alaska's summer tourism season, but the natural attractions that tourism relies on, such as glaciers, wildlife, fish, or other natural resources, may change. In order to continue to derive benefits from these resources, nature-based tour operators may have to adapt to these changes, and communication is an essential component of the adaptation process. The goal of this study is to determine how to provide useful climate change information to nature-based tour operators by answering the following questions: 1. What environmental changes do nature-based tour operators perceive? 2. …
Identifying Bearded And Ringed Seal Diet - A Comparison Of Stomach Contents, Stable Isotopes, Fatty Acids, And Fecal Dna, Anna Laura Bryan
Identifying Bearded And Ringed Seal Diet - A Comparison Of Stomach Contents, Stable Isotopes, Fatty Acids, And Fecal Dna, Anna Laura Bryan
Biological Sciences
Stomach contents, stable isotopes, fatty acids, and more recently fecal DNA are commonly used to infer the diet of marine mammals. However, how complementary or contradictory these methods are, especially when considering individual diet variability, remains poorly understood. This study assessed the differences in the dietary information resulting from stomach contents, stable isotopes, and fatty acids for adult bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus), and fishes identified from stomach contents and fecal DNA for bearded and ringed seals (Pusa hispida), harvested in Alaska for subsistence use. Stomach contents and fecal DNA provided information on recently consumed prey. In contrast, stable carbon and …

Effects Of Defoliation On Sandbar Willow (Salix Interior) Chemistry, Production, And Subsequent Overwinter Browsing By Mammalian Herbivores, Brian Patrick Allman
Biological Sciences
Herbivory can cause changes in plant characteristics, allowing temporally isolated herbivores to indirectly affect one another through their effects on shared host plants. The objective of this thesis was to test how defoliation of the willow Salix interior affects current annual stem production and chemistry, and how changes in these traits may indirectly affect mammalian herbivores. I studied the effect of manual defoliation on S. interior leaf and stem chemistry, and the effect of insect folivory on S. interior stem chemistry, production, and mammal herbivore offtake. Manual defoliation of S. interior affected stem chemistry by significantly increasing stem N concentration …
