Retrievals Of All-Weather Daily Air Temperature Using Modis And Amsr-E Data, Keunchang Jang, Sinkyu Kang, John S. Kimball, Suk Young Hong

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Satellite optical-infrared remote sensing from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides effective air temperature (Ta) retrieval at a spatial resolution of 5 km. However, frequent cloud cover can result in substantial signal loss and remote sensing retrieval error in MODIS Ta. We presented a simple pixel-wise empirical regression method combining synergistic information from MODIS Ta and 37 GHz frequency brightness temperature (Tb) retrievals from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) for estimating surface level Ta under both clear and cloudy sky conditions in the United …

Positional Control Of Plasmonic Fields And Electron Emission, Robert Campbell Word, Joseph P. Fitzgerald, Rolf Könenkamp Sep 2014

Positional Control Of Plasmonic Fields And Electron Emission, Robert Campbell Word, Joseph P. Fitzgerald, Rolf Könenkamp

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report the positional control of plasmonic fields and electron emission in a continuous gap antenna structure of sub-micron size. We show experimentally that a nanoscale area of plasmon-enhanced electron emission can be motioned by changing the polarization of an exciting optical beam of 800 nm wavelength. Finite-difference calculations are presented to support the experiments and to show that the plasmon-enhanced electric field distribution of the antenna can be motioned precisely and predictively.

In our prior publications we characterized a conserved acetylation motif (K(R)xxKK) of evolutionarily related nuclear receptors. Recent reports showed that peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) deacetylation by SIRT1 is involved in delaying cellular senescence and maintaining the brown remodeling of white adipose tissue. However, it still remains unknown whether lysyl residues 154 and 155 (K154/155) of the conserved acetylation motif (RIHKK) in Pparγ1 are acetylated. Herein, we demonstrate that Pparγ1 is acetylated and regulated by both endogenous TSA-sensitive and NAD-dependent deacetylases. Acetylation of lysine 154 was identified by mass spectrometry (MS) while deacetylation of lysine 155 by SIRT1 was …

Expression Of Peroxiredoxin 1 And 4 Promotes Human Lung Cancer Malignancy, Hong Jiang, Lisha Wu, Murli Mishra, Hedy A. Chawsheen, Qiou Wei

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Members of the Peroxiredoxin (Prx) family are major cellular antioxidants that scavenge hydrogen peroxide and play essential roles in oxidative stress and cell signaling. 2-Cys Prxs, including Prx1, 2, 3 and 4, have been indicated in multiple oncogenic signaling pathways and thus may contribute to various processes of cancer development. The significance of 2-Cys Prxs in lung cancer development and their biological function in signal transduction have not been fully investigated. In this study we analyzed the expression of 2-Cys Prxs in lung cancer, and examined their levels of expression in a variety of cell lines established from human lung …

Uncertainty Quantification Of Em-Circuit Systems Using Stochastic Polynomial Chaos Method, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Sep 2014

Uncertainty Quantification Of Em-Circuit Systems Using Stochastic Polynomial Chaos Method, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Uncertainties in realistic lumped and distributive circuit systems are of great importance to today's high yield manufacture demand. However, evaluating the stochastic effect in the time domain for the hybrid electromagnetics (EM)-circuit system was seldom done, especially when Monte Carlo is too expensive to be feasible. In this work, an adaptive hierarchical sparse grid collocation (ASGC) method is presented to quantify the impacts of stochastic inputs on hybrid electromagnetics (EM)-circuit or EM scattering systems. The ASGC method approximates the stochastic observables of interest using interpolation functions over series collocation points. Instead of employing a full-tensor product sense, the collocation points …

Biology Faculty Scholarship

Previous studies have reported the negative impacts of tourism on nonhuman primates (NHPs) and tourists and advocated the improvement of tourism management, yet what constitutes good quality management remains unclear. We explored whether rates of macaque aggression and self-directed behaviors (SDBs) differed under the supervision of two park ranger teams at the Valley of the Wild Monkeys (VWM) in Mt. Huangshan, Anhui Province, China. The two ranger teams provisioned and managed a group of macaques on an alternating monthly basis. Monkey, tourist and ranger behaviors were collected from August 16–September 30, 2012. Macaque aggression and SDB rates did not differ …

Development Of Novel Efficient Organocatalytic Reactions For The Construction Of Complex Molecular Architectures, Aiguo Song Sep 2014

Development Of Novel Efficient Organocatalytic Reactions For The Construction Of Complex Molecular Architectures, Aiguo Song

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Facile construction of synthetically and medicinally significant optically active molecular architectures from simple and readily available materials via catalytic enantioselective cascade processes is the cental goal in organic synthesis. Toward this end, my Ph.D. work focuses on the development of novel organocatalytic asymmetric cascade reactions and their application in the synthesis of versatile molecular structures. A novel amine catalyzed decarboxylative enantioselective Diels—Alder reaction between aldehydes and readily available coumarin-3-carboxylic acids as dienophiles via dienamine catalysis has been realized. Notably, the decarboxylation facilitates the release of the catalyst in the Diels—Alder reaction adducts and achieves high reaction efficiency in terms of …

High Temperature Znse:Mn/Zns Nanophosphors With Very High Quantum Efficiency For White Leds, Brian Akins Sep 2014

High Temperature Znse:Mn/Zns Nanophosphors With Very High Quantum Efficiency For White Leds, Brian Akins

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Efficient white LEDs are rapidly taking over many lighting and display applications, because of their improved color rendering and low power requirements. They are attractive replacements for traditional lighting from the point of view of both human perception and energy efficiency. Currently, the most efficient and common LED design consists of a blue LED and a yellow phosphor, which in conjunction produce white light. The LED phosphor is a yellow phosphor made of yttrium aluminum garnet doped with cerium (YAG:Ce). While it does strongly absorb blue light, its external quantum efficiency is only 75% under blue LED excitation at room …

Nuclear Factor Of Activated T-Cells 5 Increases Intestinal Goblet Cell Differentiation Through An Mtor/Notch Signaling Pathway, Yuning Zhou, Qingding Wang, Heidi L. Weiss, B. Mark Evers

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

The intestinal mucosa undergoes a continual process of proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis that is regulated by multiple signaling pathways. Previously, we have shown that the nuclear factor of activated T-cells 5 (NFAT5) is involved in the regulation of intestinal enterocyte differentiation. Here we show that treatment with sodium chloride (NaCl), which activates NFAT5 signaling, increased mTORC1 repressor regulated in development and DNA damage response 1 (REDD1) protein expression and inhibited mTOR signaling; these alterations were attenuated by knockdown of NFAT5. Knockdown of NFAT5 activated mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling and significantly inhibited REDD1 mRNA expression and protein expression. Consistently, …

Role Of Adaptor Trfa And Clppc In Controlling Levels Of Ssra-Tagged Proteins And Antitoxins In Staphylococcus Aureus, Niles P. Donegan, Jonathan S. Marvin, Ambrose L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

Staphylococcus aureus responds to changing extracellular environments in part by adjusting its proteome through alterations of transcriptional priorities and selective degradation of the preexisting pool of proteins. In Bacillus subtilis, the proteolytic adaptor protein MecA has been shown to play a role in assisting with the proteolytic degradation of proteins involved in competence and the oxidative stress response. However, the targets of TrfA, the MecA homolog in S. aureus, have not been well characterized. In this work, we investigated how TrfA assists chaperones and proteases to regulate the proteolysis of several classes of proteins in S. aureus. …

A Paper-Based Calorimetric Microfluidics Platform For Bio-Chemical Sensing, Benyamin Davaji, Chung Hoon Lee Sep 2014

A Paper-Based Calorimetric Microfluidics Platform For Bio-Chemical Sensing, Benyamin Davaji, Chung Hoon Lee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this report, a paper-based micro-calorimetric biochemical detection method is presented. Calorimetric detection of biochemical reactions is demonstrated as an extension of current colorimetric and electrochemical detection mechanisms of paper-based biochemical analytical systems. Reaction and/or binding temperature of glucose/glucose oxidase, DNA/hydrogen peroxide, and biotin/streptavidin, are measured by the paper-based micro-calorimeter. Commercially available glucose calibration samples of 0.05, 0.15 and 0.3% wt/vol concentration are used for comparing the device performance with a commercially available glucose meter (electrochemical detection). The calorimetric glucose detection demonstrates a measurement error less than 2%. The calorimetric detection results of DNA concentrations from 0.9 to 7.3 mg/mL …

Cave Systems In Reef Limestone And Calcarenites Of Late Cretaceous Age In The Crags Of Garagartza And Contiguous Outcrops: Crag Of Naparraitz And Orobe Mountain., Carlos Galan, Jose M. Rivas, Marian Nieto

KIP Articles

This paper describes a set of natural cavities, located in litosomes of reef limestones and calcarenites, which form a W-E band extending about Southern Gipuzkoa end (Otzaurte-Altzania region) for penetrating Navarra (Orobe limestone mount, NW Alsasua). The age of these rocks is Cenomanian (Late Cretaceous). The top of the outcrops form prominent crags which constitute residual relief bluffs. In them there are cave systems which are witnesses of a paleokarst, rejuvenated and partially stripped of their sedimentary fills by the current karst cycle. Accessible caves show features of a long polyphase evolution, with successive phases of speleogenesis, conduits clogging, re-excavation, …

Undulatory Swimming In Shear-Thinning Fluids: Experiments With C. Elegans, David A. Gagnon, Nathan C. Keim, Paulo E. Arratia

Physics

The swimming behaviour of microorganisms can be strongly influenced by the rheology of their fluid environment. In this manuscript, we experimentally investigate the effects of shear-thinning viscosity on the swimming behaviour of an undulatory swimmer, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Tracking methods are used to measure the swimmer’s kinematic data (including propulsion speed) and velocity fields. We find that shear-thinning viscosity modifies the velocity fields produced by the swimming nematode but does not modify the nematode’s speed and beating kinematics. Velocimetry data show significant enhancement in local vorticity and circulation, and an increase in fluid velocity near the nematode’s tail, compared …

Limited Alpine Climatic Warming And Modeled Phenology Advancement For Three Alpine Species In The Northeast United States, Michael L. Davis, Kenneth D. Kimball, Douglas M. Weihrauch, Georgia L. D. Murray, Kenneth Rancourt

Ecology Center Publications

  • Premise of the study: Most alpine plants in the Northeast United States are perennial and flower early in the growing season, extending their limitedgrowing season. Concurrently, they risk the loss of reproductive efforts to late frosts. Quantifying long-term trends in northeastern alpine flower phenology and late-spring/early-summer frost risk is limited by a dearth of phenology and climate data, except for Mount Washington, New Hampshire (1916 m a.s.l.).
  • Methods: Logistic phenology models for three northeastern US alpinespecies (Diapensia lapponica, Carex bigelowii and Vaccinium vitis-idaea) were developed from 4 yr (2008–2011) of phenology and air temperature measurements from 12 …

Quantitative Assessment Of Blood Coagulation By Cold Atmospheric Plasma, Caitlin Heslin, Daniela Boehm, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Michelle Laycock, Patrick J. Cullen, Paula Bourke Sep 2014

Quantitative Assessment Of Blood Coagulation By Cold Atmospheric Plasma, Caitlin Heslin, Daniela Boehm, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Michelle Laycock, Patrick J. Cullen, Paula Bourke

Articles

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is produced by ionizing a chosen gas, thereby creating charged and reactive species. The reactive species generated are capable of inducing a range of biomedically relevant interactions including blood coagulation. However, the underlying biochemical processes of plasma-assisted blood coagulation are largely unknown, and data quantifying blood clot formation or the impact of system parameters on the intensity of the blood clot are scarce. In this study, blood coagulation was quantified by measuring hemoglobin absorbance. System parameters of the kINPen plasma jet were investigated and compared, including treatment time, distance from the plasma source and gas flow …
