Spatial and temporal patterns of carbon (C) storage in forest ecosystems significantly affect the terrestrial C budget, but such patterns are unclear in the forests in Hainan Province, the largest tropical island in China. Here, we estimated the spatial and temporal patterns of C storage from 1993–2008 in Hainan's forest ecosystems by combining our measured data with four consecutive national forest inventories data. Forest coverage increased from 20.7% in the 1950s to 56.4% in the 2010s. The average C density of 163.7 Mg C/ha in Hainan's forest ecosystems in this study was slightly higher than that of China's mainland forests, …

Responses Of Sympatric Karenia Brevis, Prorocentrum Minimum, And Heterosigma Akashiwo To The Exposure Of Crude Oil, Koray Özhan, Sibel Bargu

Faculty Publications

Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on phytoplankton, particularly, the tolerability and changes to the toxin profiles of harmful toxic algal species remain unknown. The degree to which oil-affected sympatric Karenia brevis, Prorocentrum minimum, and Heterosigma akashiwo, all of which are ecologically important species in the Gulf of Mexico, was investigated. Comparison of their tolerability to that of non-toxic species showed that the toxin-production potential of harmful species does not provide a selective advantage. Investigated toxin profiles for K. brevis and P. minimum demonstrated an increase in toxin productivity at the lowest crude oil concentration (0.66 mg L−1 …

Inferred Vs Realized Patterns Of Gene Flow: An Analysis Of Population Structure In The Andros Island Rock Iguana., Giuliano Colosimo, Charles R. Knapp, Lisa E. Wallace, Mark E. Welch

CAS Publications

Ecological data, the primary source of information on patterns and rates of migration, can be integrated with genetic data to more accurately describe the realized connectivity between geographically isolated demes. In this paper we implement this approach and discuss its implications for managing populations of the endangered Andros Island Rock Iguana, Cyclura cychlura cychlura. This iguana is endemic to Andros, a highly fragmented landmass of large islands and smaller cays. Field observations suggest that geographically isolated demes were panmictic due to high, inferred rates of gene flow. We expand on these observations using 16 polymorphic microsatellites to investigate the genetic …

Legal And Ethical Concerns About Sexualorientation Change Efforts, Tia Powell, Edward D. Stein Sep 2014

Legal And Ethical Concerns About Sexualorientation Change Efforts, Tia Powell, Edward D. Stein

Articles

The United States has recently made significant and positive civil rights gains for LGB people, including expanded recognition of marriages between people of the same sex. Among the central tropes that have emerged in the struggle for the rights of LGB people are that they are “born that way,” that sexual orientations cannot change, and that one's sexual orientation is not affected by choice. Writer Andrew Sullivan put it this way:

“[H]omosexuality is an essentially involuntary condition that can neither be denied nor permanently repressed.… [S]o long as homosexual adults as citizens insist on the involuntary nature of their condition, …

Analysis And Acceleration Of Ntru Lattice-Based Cryptographic System, Tianyu Bai Sep 2014

Analysis And Acceleration Of Ntru Lattice-Based Cryptographic System, Tianyu Bai

Student Theses and Dissertations

Lattice based cryptography is attractive for its quantum computing resistance and efficient encryption/decryption process. . However, the big data problem has perplexed lattice based cryptographic systems with the slow processing speed. This paper intends to analyze one of the major lattice-based cryptographic systems, Nth-degree truncated polynomial ring (NTRU), and accelerate its execution with Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) for acceptable processing performance. Three strategies, including single GPU with zero copy, single GPU with data transfer, and multi-GPU versions are proposed. GPU computing techniques such as stream and zero copy are applied to overlap the computation and communication for possible speedup. Experimental …

The Reproductive And Foraging Ecology Of Black Skimmers (Rynchops Niger) On A Barrier Island Refuge In Coastal Louisiana, Brehan Furfey Sep 2014

The Reproductive And Foraging Ecology Of Black Skimmers (Rynchops Niger) On A Barrier Island Refuge In Coastal Louisiana, Brehan Furfey

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Isles Dernieres Barrier Island Refuge (IDBIR) represents an ecologically sensitive area that is historically important habitat for wintering and breeding waterbirds, and is currently threatened by habitat loss, disturbance, and climate change. The northern Gulf of Mexico coastal habitat is particularly important to colonial nesting waterbirds such as Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger), a representative species that relies on barrier island habitat for more than half their nesting grounds. Similar to that of many coastal birds, there is a paucity of information on skimmer foraging ecology, specifically what prey species they deliver to the nest and where they forage. This …

Nesting Behaviour Influences Species-Specific Gas Exchange Across Avian Eggshells, Steven J. Portugal, Golo Maurer, Gavin H. Thomas, Mark E. Hauber, Tomáš Grim, Phillip Cassey Sep 2014

Nesting Behaviour Influences Species-Specific Gas Exchange Across Avian Eggshells, Steven J. Portugal, Golo Maurer, Gavin H. Thomas, Mark E. Hauber, Tomáš Grim, Phillip Cassey

Publications and Research

Carefully controlled gas exchange across the eggshell is essential for the development of the avian embryo. Water vapour conductance (GH2O) across the shell, typically measured as mass loss during incubation, has been demonstrated to optimally ensure the healthy development of the embryo while avoiding desiccation. Accordingly, eggs exposed to sub-optimal gas exchange have reduced hatching success. We tested the association between eggshell GH2O and putative life-history correlates of adult birds, ecological nest parameters and physical characteristics of the egg itself to investigate how variation in GH2O has evolved to maintain optimal water loss across a diverse set of nest environments. …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

During the last decade, mounting evidence has implicated the human neurotropic virus JC virus in the pathology of colon cancer. However, the mechanisms of JC virus-mediated oncogenesis are still not fully determined. One candidate to mediate these effects is the viral early transcriptional product T-Antigen, which has the ability to inactivate cell cycle regulatory proteins such as p53. In medulloblastomas, T-Antigen has been shown to bind the Wnt signaling pathway protein β-catenin; however, the effects of this interaction on downstream cell cycle regulatory proteins remain unknown. In light of these observations, we investigated the association of T-Antigen and nuclear β-catenin …

Interannual Variability Of Wintertime Temperature On The Inner Continental Shelf Of The Middle Atlantic Bight, Thomas Connolly, Steven Lentz Sep 2014

Interannual Variability Of Wintertime Temperature On The Inner Continental Shelf Of The Middle Atlantic Bight, Thomas Connolly, Steven Lentz

Faculty Publications

The shallow depth of the inner continental shelf allows for rapid adjustment of the ocean to air-sea exchange of heat and momentum compared with offshore locations. Observations during 2001–2013 are used to evaluate the contributions of air-sea heat flux and oceanic advection to interannual variability of inner-shelf temperature in the Middle Atlantic Bight. Wintertime processes are important for interpreting regional interannual variability at nearshore locations since winter anomalies account for 69–77% of the variance of the annual anomalies and are correlated over broad along-shelf scales, from New England to North Carolina. At the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory on the 12 …

Eukaryotic Gene Expression Patterns Of Microorganisms In The Amazon River Plume Parallel The Biogeochemistry Of Plume Waters, Brian L. Zielinski Sep 2014

Eukaryotic Gene Expression Patterns Of Microorganisms In The Amazon River Plume Parallel The Biogeochemistry Of Plume Waters, Brian L. Zielinski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Unraveling the microbiological processes that occur as water travels from a river's mouth into the ocean is critical to understanding the role of river plumes in global biogeochemical cycles. Metranscriptomics, the gene expression of a whole community of organisms, was utilized to examine six stations along the Amazon River Plume (ARP) in 2010 to test thehypothesis that there were measurable differences in gene expression for key biogeochemical genes along the ARP. This body of work focuses on methods developed to identify which genes are biogeochemically important for a particular environment along extreme salinity, nutrient and community gradients in the ARP, …

The Effect Of Pomegranate Juice Extract On The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway In Pancreatic Cancer, Veronica Gomez, Talia Shackelford, Autumn Tocchi, Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith Sep 2014

The Effect Of Pomegranate Juice Extract On The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway In Pancreatic Cancer, Veronica Gomez, Talia Shackelford, Autumn Tocchi, Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. There have been several reports indicating that phytochemicals in fruits can reduce the risk of cancer due to the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the polyphenols. Our lab has shown that pomegranate juice extract (PJE) has anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects in human pancreatic cancer cells. In the past, we have shown that cells adhere more strongly to the plate when treated with PJE. This observation prompted an investigation of how PJE regulates cell adhesion proteins. Previously, our lab investigated E-cadherin, a cell adhesion protein. Upon activation …

On Shaky Grounds: Reasons Behind The Failure To Adhere To The "Powell Doctrine" In The 2003 Iraq Invasion, Sasha Anderson Sep 2014

On Shaky Grounds: Reasons Behind The Failure To Adhere To The "Powell Doctrine" In The 2003 Iraq Invasion, Sasha Anderson

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

Why did we go to war with Iraq and what are we still doing there? This question is one of our most pressing foreign policy issues and continues to be hotly debated by politicians, journalists and citizens. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 was executed in a strikingly different fashion than the strategy used in an earlier conflict with Iraq, the Persian Gulf War of 1990-1991. Rather than follow a strategy consisting of clear goals, overwhelming force and a predetermined exit strategy, the US military blundered into Iraq in 2003 without a way to measure victory and without a plan …

Who Owns Online Curriculum And Content? A Primer On Intellectual Property, Jon Garon

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The ownership of copyrights in a faculty member’s copyrighted works has been a source of tension between labor and management for many years, affecting content created for the classroom, for scholarship, and for creative endeavors. Ownership of on-line learning content adds to these tensions and presents a number of important labor-management and pedagogical issues. The legal default rules of copyright provide the starting point for negotiations between labor and management. This panel will explore whether the institution or the faculty member owns the intellectual property associated with on-line learning, course content, and other works. In addition, it will present practical …

A Suite Of Early Eocene (~ 55 Ma) Climate Model Boundary Conditions, N. Herold, J. Buzan, M. Seton, A. Goldner, J. A. M. Green, R. D. Muller, P. Markwick, M. Huber, Matthew Huber

New Hampshire EPSCoR

We describe a set of early Eocene (~ 55 Ma) climate model boundary conditions constructed in a self-consistent reference frame and incorporating recent data and methodologies. Given the growing need for uniform experimental design within the Eocene climate modelling community and the challenges faced in simulating the prominent features of Eocene climate, we make publicly available our data sets of Eocene topography, bathymetry, tidal dissipation, vegetation, aerosol distributions and river runoff. Major improvements in our boundary conditions over previous efforts include the implementation of the ANTscape palaeotopography of Antarctica, more accurate representations of the Drake Passage and Tasman Gateway, as …

Development of sensitive and specific biomarkers, preferably those circulating in body fluids is critical for early diagnosis of cancer. This study performed profiling of microRNAs (miRNAs) in exocrine pancreatic secretions (pancreatic juice) by microarray analysis utilizing pancreatic juice from 6 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients and two pooled samples from 6 non-pancreatic, non-healthy (NPNH) as controls. Differentially circulating miRNAs were subsequently validated in 88 pancreatic juice samples from 50 PDAC, 19 chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients and 19 NPNH controls. A marked difference in the profiles of four circulating miRNAs (miR-205, miR-210, miR-492, and miR-1427) was observed in pancreatic juice collected …
