Towards A Dynamic View Of Genetic Networks: A Kalman Filtering Framework For Recovering Temporally-Rewiring Stable Networks From Undersampled Data, Jehandad Khan
Theses and Dissertations
It is widely accepted that cellular requirements and environmental conditions dictate the architecture of genetic regulatory networks. Nonetheless, the status quo in regulatory network modeling and analysis assumes an invariant network topology over time. We refocus on a dynamic perspective of genetic networks, one that can uncover substantial topological changes in network structure during biological processes such as developmental growth and cancer progression. We propose a novel outlook on the inference of time-varying genetic networks, from a limited number of noisy observations, by formulating the networks estimation as a target tracking problem. Assuming linear dynamics, we formulate a constrained Kalman …

Reflections Of Self: Images Of People With Specific Learning Disabilities And Attention Deficit / Hyperactive Disorder In Children's Literature, Elizabeth R. Hayes
Reflections Of Self: Images Of People With Specific Learning Disabilities And Attention Deficit / Hyperactive Disorder In Children's Literature, Elizabeth R. Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I explored the portrayals of people with a specific learning disability or with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children's literature. Eighteen books were analyzed to determine what themes and messages were being conveyed to children.
The major themes were about friendship, and overcoming issues associated with a SLD or AD/HD. In addtion, the portrayals suggest that children with SLD and AD/HD have similar problems like their peers with these conditions. However, there were portrayals of stereotypical roles and usage of negative language.

How Does Social Support Influence Distress In Trauma Victims? An Exploration Of Potential Pathways Using The Trauma Film Paradigm, Matt Jacob Woodward
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The goal of the present study was to examine ways in which social support might influence trauma symptoms through a variation in the trauma film paradigm. Sixty-seven undergraduate female students in romantic relationships were randomized to watch a stressful film clip depicting a sexual assault either in the presence of their romantic partner (PP) or in the absence of their romantic partner (PA). Analyses showed that the PA and PP condition did not differ in affect or anxiety experienced before, during, or after the film clip. However, the PP condition experienced significantly more intrusive memories of the film than the …

Metabolic dysfunction in skeletal muscle is a major contributor to the development of type 2 diabetes. Endurance exercise training has long been established as an effective means to directly restore skeletal muscle glucose and lipid uptake and metabolism. However, in addition to the direct effects of skeletal muscle on glucose and lipids, there is renewed interest in the ability of skeletal muscle to coordinate metabolic activity of other tissues, such as adipose tissue and liver. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of endurance exercise on the expression level of two novel muscle-derived secreted factors, or myokines, …
Selenite Activates The Alternative Oxidase Pathway And Alters Primary Metabolism In Brassica Napus Roots: Evidence Of A Mitochondrial Stress Response, Aleksandar Dimkovikj, Doug Van Hoewyk
Selenite Activates The Alternative Oxidase Pathway And Alters Primary Metabolism In Brassica Napus Roots: Evidence Of A Mitochondrial Stress Response, Aleksandar Dimkovikj, Doug Van Hoewyk
Biology
Background: Human requirements for dietary selenium are met mainly by crops. However, excessive uptake of selenium in plants can restrict growth, and its toxicity has been postulated to target roots. Selenite toxicity can be attributed to its assimilation into selenocysteine, which can replace cysteine to yield malformed selenoproteins. Additionally, selenite has pro-oxidant properties. In this study, the effects of selenite on root tissue in Brassica napus (canola) were investigated to better understand its mode of toxicity and the metabolic adjustments needed to mediate a selenite-response.Results: Selenite induced the rapid formation of mitochondrial superoxide, which led to decreased aconitase activity and …

Winter Roosting Habits Of Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia Sialis) In Northeastern Arkansas, Jessica Anne Fowler Neal
Student Theses and Dissertations
The wintering behavior of Eastern Bluebirds has not been well studied despite historic population declines associated with severe winters. I monitored 69 nest boxes during the winters of 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 to determine the criteria used for nest box roosting and the roost group composition. I found that nest box use and roost group size increased significantly with lower windchill at sunset. Eastern Bluebirds exhibited a clear preference for boxes with nest material present, but no preference between natural and artificially constructed nests. They were found roosting almost exclusively in family groups, with parent-offspring/direct family relationships being the most common. …

Isomir Expression Profiles In Human Lymphoblastoid Cell Lines Exhibit Population And Gender Dependencies., Phillipe Loher, Eric R Londin, Isidore Rigoutsos
Computational Medicine Center Faculty Papers
For many years it was believed that each mature microRNA (miRNA) existed as a single entity with fixed endpoints and a 'static' and unchangeable primary sequence. However, recent evidence suggests that mature miRNAs are more 'dynamic' and that each miRNA precursor arm gives rise to multiple isoforms, the isomiRs. Here we report on our identification of numerous and abundant isomiRs in the lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) of 452 men and women from five different population groups. Unexpectedly, we find that these isomiRs exhibit an expression profile that is population-dependent and gender-dependent. This is important as it indicates that the LCLs …

Natural Selection On Thermal Performance In A Novel Thermal Environment, Michael L. Logan, Robert M. Cox, Ryan Calsbeek
Natural Selection On Thermal Performance In A Novel Thermal Environment, Michael L. Logan, Robert M. Cox, Ryan Calsbeek
Dartmouth Scholarship
Tropical ectotherms are thought to be especially vulnerable to climate change because they are adapted to relatively stable temperature regimes, such that even small increases in environmental temperature may lead to large decreases in physiological performance. One way in which tropical organisms may mitigate the detrimental effects of warming is through evolutionary change in thermal physiology. The speed and magnitude of this response depend, in part, on the strength of climate-driven selection. However, many ectotherms use behavioral adjustments to maintain preferred body temperatures in the face of environmental variation. These behaviors may shelter individuals from natural selection, preventing evolutionary adaptation …

The Trypanosoma cruzi clade is a group of parasites that comprises T. cruzi sensu lato and its closest relatives. Although several species have been confirmed phylogenetically to belong to this clade, it is uncertain how many more species can be expected to belong into this group. Here, we present the results of a survey of trypanosome parasites of the bat Artibeus jamaicensis from the Panama´ Canal Zone, an important seed disperser. Using a genealogical species delimitation approach, the Poisson tree processes (PTP), we tentatively identified five species of trypanosomes – all belonging to the T. cruzi clade. A small monophyletic …

Schooling Increases Risk Exposure For Fish Navigating Past Artificial Barriers, Bertrand H. Lemasson, James W. Haefner, Mark D. Bowen
Biology Faculty Publications
Artificial barriers have become ubiquitous features in freshwater ecosystems and they can significantly impact a region's biodiversity. Assessing the risk faced by fish forced to navigate their way around artificial barriers is largely based on assays of individual swimming behavior. However, social interactions can significantly influence fish movement patterns and alter their risk exposure. Using an experimental flume, we assessed the effects of social interactions on the amount of time required for juvenile palmetto bass (Morone chrysops × M. saxatilis) to navigate downstream past an artificial barrier. Fish were released either individually or in groups into the flume …
