“I’D Rather Be In Afghanistan”: Antinomies Of Battle: Los Angeles, Gerry Canavan
English Faculty Research and Publications
This article reads Battle: Los Angeles (2011) against the grain to argue that the film possesses an antiwar undertow running unexpectedly counter to its surface-level pro-military politics. The article uses the antinomy structuring Battle: Los Angeles as the opportunity to explore the pro- and anti-war politics of science fiction alien invasion film more generally, as well as consider the role of cooperation with the military in Hollywood blockbusters. The article closes with a Jamesonian reading of “the army”: as a kind of utopia as registered by mainstream cultural texts like Battle: Los Angeles.

On The Spectral Stability Of Kinks In Some Pt-Symmetric Variants Of The Classical Klein-Gordon Field Theories, A. Demirkaya, Todd Kapitula, P. G. Kevrekidis, M. Stanislavova
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
In the present work we consider the introduction of PT-symmetric terms in the context of classical Klein-Gordon field theories. We explore the implication of such terms on the spectral stability of coherent structures, namely kinks. We find that the conclusion critically depends on the location of the kink center relative to the center of the PT-symmetric term. The main result is that if these two points coincide, the kink's spectrum remains on the imaginary axis and the wave is spectrally stable. If the kink is centered on the "lossy side" of the medium, then it becomes stabilized. On the other …

Fatty Acid Uptake And Lipid Storage Induced By Hif-1Α Contribute To Cell Growth And Survival After Hypoxia-Reoxygenation, K Bensaad, E Favaro, Ca Lewis, B Peck, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
An in vivo model of antiangiogenic therapy allowed us to identify genes upregulated by bevacizumab treatment, including Fatty Acid Binding Protein 3 (FABP3) and FABP7, both of which are involved in fatty acid uptake. In vitro, both were induced by hypoxia in a hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)-dependent manner. There was a significant lipid droplet (LD) accumulation in hypoxia that was time and O2 concentration dependent. Knockdown of endogenous expression of FABP3, FABP7, or Adipophilin (an essential LD structural component) significantly impaired LD formation under hypoxia. We showed that LD accumulation is due to FABP3/7-dependent fatty acid uptake while de novo fatty …

Benzodiazepines are a large class of commonly-prescribed drugs used to treat a variety of clinical disorders. They have been shown to produce ecological effects at environmental concentrations, making understanding their fate in aquatic environments very important. In this study, uptake and biotransformations by riverine bacterio-plankton of the benzodiazepine, diazepam, and 2-amino-5-chlorobenzophenone, ACB (a photo-degradation product of diazepam and several other benzodiazepines), were investigated using batch microcosm incubations. These were conducted using water and bacterio-plankton populations from contrasting river catchments (Tamar and Mersey, UK), both in the presence and absence of a peptide, added as an alternative organic substrate. Incubations lasted …

Forward genetic screens using chemical mutagens have been successful in defining the function of thousands of genes in eukaryotic model organisms. The main drawback of this strategy is the time-consuming identification of the molecular lesions causative of the phenotypes of interest. With whole-genome sequencing (WGS), it is now possible to sequence hundreds of strains, but determining which mutations are causative among thousands of polymorphisms remains challenging. We have sequenced 394 mutant strains, generated in a chemical mutagenesis screen, for essential genes on the Drosophila X chromosome and describe strategies to reduce the number of candidate mutations from an average of …

Compositional Vector Space Models For Improved Bug Localization, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Julia Lawall
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software developers and maintainers often need to locate code units responsible for a particular bug. A number of Information Retrieval (IR) techniques have been proposed to map natural language bug descriptions to the associated code units. The vector space model (VSM) with the standard tf-idf weighting scheme (VSMnatural), has been shown to outperform nine other state-of-the-art IR techniques. However, there are multiple VSM variants with different weighting schemes, and their relative performance differs for different software systems. Based on this observation, we propose to compose various VSM variants, modelling their composition as an optimization problem. We propose a genetic algorithm …

A Molecular Framework Phylogeny For Ptilotus (Amaranthaceae), Timothy A. Hammer
A Molecular Framework Phylogeny For Ptilotus (Amaranthaceae), Timothy A. Hammer
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Ptilotus (Amaranthaceae) is an Australian genus with over 100 species, most of which occur in arid Western Australia. Ptilotus has been a taxonomically difficult genus; despite rigorous morphological studies into the genus over many years, previous workers have found it difficult to delimit infrageneric groups due to inconsistent morphological variation. With the goal to establish a phylogenetic framework for the genus, 100 taxa were sampled, including 87 Ptilotus spp., and the ITS nrDNA and matK cpDNA were sequenced. The phylogeny was reconstructed using Bayesian, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses on separate and concatenated datasets. Morphological characters were assessed and …

EF-P is a bacterial tRNA-mimic protein, which accelerates the ribosome-catalyzed polymerization of poly-prolines. In Escherichia coli, EF-P is post-translationally modified on a conserved lysine residue. The post-translational modification is performed in a two-step reaction involving the addition of a β-lysine moiety and the subsequent hydroxylation, catalyzed by PoxA and YfcM, respectively. The β-lysine moiety was previously shown to enhance the rate of poly-proline synthesis, but the role of the hydroxylation is poorly understood. We solved the crystal structure of YfcM and performed functional analyses to determine the hydroxylation mechanism. In addition, YfcM appears to be structurally distinct from any …

Background: Prostate cancer, a serious genetic disease, has known as the first widespread cancer in men, but the molecular changes required for the cancer progression has not fully understood. Availability of high-throughput gene expression data has led to the development of various computational methods, for identification of the critical genes, have involved in the cancer. Methods: In this paper, we have shown the construction of co-expression networks, which have been using Y-chromosome genes, provided an alternative strategy for detecting of new candidate, might involve in prostate cancer. In our approach, we have constructed independent co-expression networks from normal and cancerous …

Dynamic Boundaries In Flowing Fluids, From Erosion Sculptures To Flapping Wing Flight, Leif Ristroph
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Textbook fluid mechanics addresses steady flows past fixed, rigid objects. However, Nature rarely obeys such restrictions and instead offers many fascinating situations involving the mutual influence of dynamic structures and unsteady flows. Such problems are complex because changes in shape affect flow, which in turn alters shape, and so on. Drawing inspiration from biological and geophysical flows, our Applied Math Lab attacks such fluid–structure interaction problems through tabletop experiments, math modeling, and computational simulations. I will present several case studies from the slow but persistent sculpting of erodible boundaries by flowing fluids to the fast flapping wing motions of insects …

On The Chordwise And Spanwise Flexibilities Of Fish Fin During Free Swimming, Geng Liu, Chengyu Li, Haibo Dong, George Lauder
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
The flexibility of fish propulsors plays critical roles in biological propulsion in nature. It is widely thought that this flexibility usually results in drag reduction and thrust enhancement during the fish swimming. In past research, fish fins are usually modeled as rigid plates undergoing pitching–plunging motion. There is a lack of studies of the flexible caudal fin in freely swimming fish. In this study, a caudal fin model with both chordwise and spanwise flexibilities is constructed based on the real fin kinematics of a bluegill sunfish performing a forward swimming in a water tunnel. Direct numerical simulations using an immersed …

When driven by an acoustic pressure field at ultrasound frequencies, microbubbles adsorbed at a solid boundary establish strong steady vortical flows. Microbubble steady streaming flows represent a unique type of actuating mechanism for microfluidics and have demonstrated great potential in handling micro-objects, controlling liquid transport as well as deforming biological objects (e.g., cells and vesicles). We demonstrate that the geometry of this type of flow can easily be changed interactively and noninvasively, shaping the local flow environment with micron accuracy. Microparticles thus experience tunable forces that alter their trajectories, e.g., depending on their size. Using a combination of bubble streaming …

Analytical Results For How Flexibility Affects Flapping Propulsion, Matthew Nick J. Moore
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Wing or fin flexibility can dramatically affect the performance of flying and swimming animals. Both laboratory experiments and numerical simulations have been used to study these effects, however useful analytical results are notably lacking. Here, we develop a small-amplitude theory to model a flapping wing that pitches passively due to a combination of wing compliance, inertia, and fluid forces. Remarkably, we obtain a class of exact solutions describing the wing’s emergent pitching motions, along with expressions for how thrust and efficiency are modified by compliance. The solutions recover a range of realistic behaviors and shed new light on how flexibility …

Near-Wall Motion Of A Squirmer In Viscoelastic Fluids, Gaojin Li, Alireza Karimi, Ardekani Arezoo
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Microbial biofilms ubiquitously occur on natural and man-made surfaces and are closely related to various health and environmental issues. During the biofilm formation, the hydrodynamic interaction between microorganisms, surfaces and biofilm itself, which shows viscoelastic properties, are important. Despite this, the hydrodynamic interaction of swimming microorganisms and solid surfaces in viscoelastic fluids is poorly understood. We perform a three-dimensional direct numerical simulation of a microorganism swimming in viscoelastic fluids near a wall. The background viscoelastic fluid is modeled using a Giesekus constitutive equation and the microorganism is modeled using a squirmer model, which is composed of a spherical cell body …

A new distance-based estimator for forest regeneration assessment, the mean distance method, was developed by combining ideas and techniques from the wandering quarter method, T-square sampling and the random pairs method. The performance of the mean distance method was compared to conventional 4.05 square meter plot sampling through simulation analysis on 405 square meter blocks of a field surveyed clumped distribution and a computer generated random distribution at different levels of density of 100, 50 and 25%. The mean distance method accurately estimated density on the random populations but the mean distance method estimates were more variable than those of …

Warming, Competition, And Bromus Tectorum Population Growth Across An Elevation Gradient, Aldo Compagnoni, Peter B. Adler
Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is one of the most problematic invasive plant species in North America and climate change threatens to exacerbate its impacts. We conducted a two‐year field experiment to test the effect of warming, competition, and seed source on cheatgrass performance across an elevation gradient in northern Utah. We hypothesized that warming would increase cheatgrass performance, but that warming effects would be limited by competing vegetation and by local adaptation of cheatgrass seed sources. The warming treatment relied on open top chambers, we removed vegetation to assess the effect of competition from neighboring vegetation, and we reciprocally …
