Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: The GUIDE-IT (Guiding Evidence Based Therapy Using Biomarker Intensified Treatment in Heart Failure) study is designed to determine the safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of a strategy of adjusting therapy with the goal of achieving and maintaining a target N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level of

BACKGROUND: Elevations in natriuretic peptide (NP) levels provide key prognostic information in patients with HF. Therapies proven to improve outcomes in patients with HF are generally associated with decreasing levels of NPs, and observational data show that decreases in NP levels over time are associated with favorable outcomes. Results from smaller prospective, randomized studies …

On Patenting Human Organisms Or How The Abortion Wars Feed Into The Ownership Fallacy, Yaniv Heled Oct 2014

On Patenting Human Organisms Or How The Abortion Wars Feed Into The Ownership Fallacy, Yaniv Heled

Cardozo Law Review

The idea of ominous technologies that put human individuals or parts of their bodies under someone else's control has been stirring emotions and terrifying people for centuries. It was a recent offshoot of this idea - the notion of "patenting humans" - that mobilized certain members of Congress to pass legislation prohibiting the issuance of patent claims "directed to or encompassing a human organism." The values underlying this legislation may well have been agreeable, even admirable. Yet, the actual motivation for it was misguided; its execution, deeply flawed; its potential outcomes, hazardous.

This Article reviews the history and background of …

The Ties That Bind: Reevaluating The Role Of Legal Presumptions Of Paternity, Heather Kolinsky Oct 2014

The Ties That Bind: Reevaluating The Role Of Legal Presumptions Of Paternity, Heather Kolinsky

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

As Justice Brennan observed in Michael H. v. Gerald D. so many years ago, we must “identify the point at which a tradition becomes firm enough to be relevant to our definition of liberty and the moment at which it becomes too obsolete to be relevant any longer.” This Article addresses one such tradition, the legal presumption of paternity, and examines it through the lens of equal protection, the changing roles of fatherhood, and the evolution of marriage. The concept of who is a parent must change to both satisfy equal protection as well as modern scientific and societal realties. …

The Impact Of Empire On Native American Women And Mothers, Rebecca J.M. Yowan Oct 2014

The Impact Of Empire On Native American Women And Mothers, Rebecca J.M. Yowan

Student Publications

No one doubts that the colonizing forces of the dominant, Euro-American culture have had an extreme and enduring impact on Native American cultures. However, the specific impact that empire has had on Native American women is a salient topic for research. Drawing on examples of environmental degradation, stolen agency, and psychological suffering, this essay illustrates the numerous and distressing effects that the philosophy and practice of empire have had and continue to have on Native American women.

Noise pollution can be damaging to a community by impacting its atmosphere as well as the health of its residents, local quality of life, and local economy. Our study sought to gain insight into the level of noise pollution in Gettysburg, both in-town and on the Gettysburg College campus, and how noise pollution may be affecting the local residents and students. We selected 9 sampling sites, 6 in-town and 3 on the college campus, and measured the noise pollution in dBA with portable sound meters three days a week and three times a day over a three week period. Our …

Regulation Of Peripheral Molecular Clocks In Mammalian Tissues And In Vitro Skeletal Muscle Activation Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Via Aicar, Alex C. Lupolt, Daniel P. Moorhead, Josef Brandauer Oct 2014

Regulation Of Peripheral Molecular Clocks In Mammalian Tissues And In Vitro Skeletal Muscle Activation Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Via Aicar, Alex C. Lupolt, Daniel P. Moorhead, Josef Brandauer

Student Publications

Most organisms possess a common molecular machinery that governs cellular and tissue circadian rhythmicity through a roughly 24-hour transcription-translation feedback loop. It is estimated that up to 15 percent of human genes are influenced by the core clock machinery. It is likely, however, that the metabolic networks affected by the molecular clock differ according to body tissue.

Recent evidence suggests that peripheral molecular clocks are governed to a greater extent by energy availability than by light and dark cycles. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) acts as a cellular fuel gauge within the cell and is activated in response to exercise and …

Estimating Climate Change Effects On Net Primary Production Of Rangelands In The United States, Matthew Clark Reeves, Adam Lasalle Moreno, Karen E. Bagne, Steven W. Running Oct 2014

Estimating Climate Change Effects On Net Primary Production Of Rangelands In The United States, Matthew Clark Reeves, Adam Lasalle Moreno, Karen E. Bagne, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

The potential effects of climate change on net primary productivity (NPP) of U.S. rangelands were evaluated using estimated climate regimes from the A1B, A2 and B2 global change scenarios imposed on the biogeochemical cycling model, Biome-BGC from 2001 to 2100. Temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure deficit, day length, solar radiation, CO2 enrichment and nitrogen deposition were evaluated as drivers of NPP. Across all three scenarios, rangeland NPP increased by 0.26 % year−1 (7 kg C ha−1 year−1) but increases were not apparent until after 2030 and significant regional variation in NPP was revealed. The Desert Southwest …

Nectar Yeasts In The Tall Larkspur Delphinium Barbeyi (Ranunculaceae) And Effects On Components Of Pollinator Foraging Behavior, Robert N. Schaeffer, Cody R. Phillips, M. Catherine Duryea, Jonathan Andicoechea, Rebecca E. Irwin Oct 2014

Nectar Yeasts In The Tall Larkspur Delphinium Barbeyi (Ranunculaceae) And Effects On Components Of Pollinator Foraging Behavior, Robert N. Schaeffer, Cody R. Phillips, M. Catherine Duryea, Jonathan Andicoechea, Rebecca E. Irwin

Dartmouth Scholarship

Microorganisms frequently colonize the nectar of angiosperm species. Though capable of altering a suite of traits important for pollinator attraction, few studies exist that test the degree to which they mediate pollinator foraging behavior. The objective of our study was to fill this gap by assessing the abundance and diversity of yeasts associated with the perennial larkspur Delphinium barbeyi (Ranunculaceae) and testing whether their presence affected components of pollinator foraging behavior. Yeasts frequently colonized D. barbeyi nectar, populating 54–77% of flowers examined depending on site. Though common, the yeast community was species-poor, represented by a single species, Metschnikowia reukaufii. …

Contribution Of Teg49 Small Rna In The 5′ Upstream Transcriptional Region Of Sara To Virulence In Staphylococcus Aureus, Samin Kim, Dindo Reyes, Marie Beaume, Patrice Francois, Ambrose Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

High-throughput RNA sequencing technology has found the 5' untranslated region of sarA to contain two putative small RNAs (sRNAs), designated teg49 and teg48. Northern blot analysis disclosed that teg49 and teg48 were detectable within the P3-P1 and P1 sarA promoter regions, respectively. Focusing on teg49, we found that this sRNA, consisting of 196 nucleotides, is transcribed in the same direction as the sarA P3 transcript. The expression of both P3 and teg49 transcripts is dependent on sigB and cshA, which encodes a DEAD box RNA helicase. Within the sRNA teg49, there are two putative hairpin-loop structures, HP1 and HP2. Transversion …

Status and Trends for Virginia Chesapeake Bay

The period prior to the implementation of the Chesapeake Bay Monitoring Program was characterized by a marked decline in the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. The disappearance of submerged aquatic vegetation in certain regions of the Bay, declines in the abundance of some commercially and recreationally important species, increases in the incidence of low dissolved oxygen events, changes in the Bay's food web, and other ecological problems have been related to the deteriorating water quality (e.g. USEPA, 1982,1983;Officer et al.,1984; Orth and Moore, 1984). The results of concentrated research efforts in the late 1970s and early 1980s stimulated the …

Can A University’S Public Affairs Mission Move The Institution Beyond Sustainability?, Alexander Wait

eJournal of Public Affairs

Institutions of higher learning spend considerable time linking their mission to every facet of the institution. More recently, considerable attention to sustainability has been a focus of almost every higher learning institution in the United States and many abroad. This paper is a case study exploring whether an institution with a strong, state-mandated mission in public affairs has infused sustainability into its mission or developed sustainability independent of its mission. Surveys of sustainability and public affairs curricula illustrate that curriculum based on the public affairs mission is dictated from the top, but that curriculum based on sustainability is a choice …

Applications Of Novel Mri Technologies In Tissue Engineering And Disease Diagnosis, Vahid Khalilzad-Sharghi

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) are increasingly under investigation to explore their potential role in establishing effective evaluation methods for the procedure of tissue regeneration carried out in vitro, in vivo, and in disease diagnosis. To this end, there is a continuous pursuit of novel tools both in vitro and in vivo. For instance, there is a great need for the development and evaluation of an MR-compatible incubation system that enables simultaneous monitoring and culturing of cell and tissue constructs using MRI techniques. Such an imagingcompatible incubation system eliminates exposing the culture to the risks of …

Syntheses Of Aminyl Diradicals And Nitroxide Tetra- And Octaradicals, Arnon Olankitwanit Oct 2014

Syntheses Of Aminyl Diradicals And Nitroxide Tetra- And Octaradicals, Arnon Olankitwanit

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation comprises of two main research projects: aminyl diradicals and calix[4]arene nitroxide tetra- and octaradicals. The design, multi-step synthesis and characterization, including NMR, EPR spectroscopy, magnetic measurements and X-ray crystallography of precursors and target compounds will be discussed.

Aminyl radicals, nitrogen-centered radicals, are typically short-lived and considered as reactive intermediates. Because of their unique magnetic properties, aminyls are attractive building blocks for high-spin di-and polyradicals. The challenge is in the design and synthesis of aminyls with increased stability. In this chapter, we have prepared triplet (S = 1) ground state aminyl diradicals, which are derivatives of aza-m …

Questioning Race: Ancestry Dna And Dialogue On Race, Anita K. Foeman, Angela Howard Oct 2014

Questioning Race: Ancestry Dna And Dialogue On Race, Anita K. Foeman, Angela Howard

Communication and Media Faculty Publications

Human genetics and racial identity converge pointedly in the family narrative. Until recently, genetics, racial identity, and family narrative were all rather malleable concepts in the public arena. All were presented in anecdotal form for the most part, and were often based on certain social conventions. The interjection of popularly available ancestry DNA data adds an additional piece of information to the discussion of genetics, race and narrative. Using the framework of both narrative theory and theory of social construction, this work uses quantitative and qualitative data to explore how individuals react to ancestry DNA findings and to consider if …

Learning From Conservation Planning For The U.S. National Wildlife Refuges, Robert L. Fischman, Vicky J. Meretsky Oct 2014

Learning From Conservation Planning For The U.S. National Wildlife Refuges, Robert L. Fischman, Vicky J. Meretsky

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The U.S. National Wildlife Refuge System has nearly completed its first round of unit-level, comprehensive conservation plans (CCPs) and will soon begin required revisions. Laws and policies governing refuge planning emphasize ecological integrity, landscape-scale conservation, and adaptive management. We evaluated 185 CCPs completed during 2005–2011, which cover 324 of 555 national wildlife refuges. We reviewed CCP prescriptions addressing 5 common conservation issues (habitat and game, nongame, imperiled, and invasive species) and 3 specialized topics (landscape-scale conservation, climate change, and environmental quality). Common conservation issues received prescriptions in >90% of CCPs. Specialized topics received more variable treatment. Prescriptions for aquatic connectivity, …

Afro-Ecuadorian Educational Movement: Racial Oppression, Its Origins And Oral Tradition, Ethan Johnson Oct 2014

Afro-Ecuadorian Educational Movement: Racial Oppression, Its Origins And Oral Tradition, Ethan Johnson

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, three objectives are presented, first, to describe the socio-historical context of Afro-Ecuadorians generally and specifically related to education. Here, it is demonstrated how colonial and nation building practices and processes have attempted to silence and make absent the contributions people of African descent have made to development of the nation. Second, the Afro-Ecuadorian social movement is considered within the local, regional and global socio-historical context, and it is argued that the Afro-Ecuadorian Etnoeducación is part of a continuous struggle for freedom and inclusion in the nation as full citizens. The third area of analysis focuses on one …
