Background: Gene set testing has become an important analysis technique in high throughput microarray and next generation sequencing studies for uncovering patterns of differential expression of various biological processes. Often, the large number of gene sets that are tested simultaneously require some sort of multiplicity correction to account for the multiplicity effect. This work provides a substantial computational improvement to an existing familywise error rate controlling multiplicity approach (the Focus Level method) for gene set testing in high throughput microarray and next generation sequencing studies using Gene Ontology graphs, which we call the Short Focus Level.

Sarpa salpa herbivory on shallow reaches of Posidonia oceanica beds.— Here, we examined the temporal and small–scale spatial variability of grazing by the herbivorous fish Sarpa salpa on shallow beds of the temperate seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Herbivory intensity expressed as the percent of leaf area taken by fish bites was higher in September 2006 than in February 2007, and at 0.5 m than at 1.5 m during both sampling times. All S. salpa feeding at the shallow locations studied were juveniles, with bite sizes ranging from 0.03 to 0.62 cm2. Juveniles feeding at 1.5 m were larger in February 2007 …

Zebrafish hindbrain development begins with the folding of the neural plate into the neural tube that gives rise to segments in the hindbrain known as rhombomeres. Each rhombomere gives rise to important structures, such as the otic vesicle and various craniofacial nerves. The first of the rhombomeres to develop is r4—modulated by proper development of hoxb1a. Proper development of r4 triggers a cascade of gene expression of other genes such as fgfs, krox-20­, and many other genes required for proper segmentation of the rest of the hindbrain. การศึกษาประชาคมฮาร์แพกทิคอยด์โคพีพอดบริเวณป่าชายเลนชุมชนบ้านทุ่งตะเซะ จังหวัดตรัง ซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนที่อุดมสมบูรณ์แบ่งพื้นที่ศึกษาออกเป็น 7 สถานี มี 3 พื้นที่หลัก คือ พื้นที่ป่าชายเลนด้านในที่ติดแผ่นดินและบริเวณคลองด้านใน พื้นที่ป่าชายเลนด้านนอกที่ติดทะเลในบริเวณคลองเกาะเคี่ยม และบริเวณเกาะกลางที่อยู่ตรงข้ามศูนย์อนุรักษ์หอยปะของชุมชน ทำการเก็บตัวอย่าง 4 ครั้งคือ ช่วงก่อนการปลูกป่าซึ่งเป็นการปลูกเสริมและฟื้นฟูในเดือนตุลาคม 2553 (ฤดูฝน) หลังจากปลูกป่า 6 เดือนในเดือนเมษายน 2554 (ฤดูแล้ง) หลังจากปลูกป่า 1 ปี 6 เดือนในเดือนเมษายน 2555 (ฤดูแล้ง) และหลังจากปลูกป่า 2 ปี 6 เดือนในเดือนพฤษภาคม 2556 (ฤดูแล้ง) พบสัตว์ทะเลหน้าดินเล็กทั้งหมด พบทั้งสิ้น 12 ไฟลัม แบ่งออกเป็น 29 กลุ่ม สัตว์ทะเลหน้าดินขนาดเล็กที่พบเป็นกลุ่มเด่นคือ Nematodes, Foraminiferans และ Harpacticoid copepods ความหนาแน่นของสัตว์ทะเล หน้าดินขนาดเล็กในบริเวณป่าชายเลนตอนในและตอนนอกของป่าชายเลนชุมชนบ้านทุ่งตะเซะ จังหวัดตรัง ทั้งในช่วงก่อนและหลังปลูกป่า 2 ปี 6 เดือน มีค่าอยู่ในเกณฑ์สูง ซึ่งมีความหนาแน่นสูงกว่า 500 ตัวต่อ 10 ตารางเซนติเมตร แสดงว่าบริเวณนี้เป็นป่าที่มีความอุดมสมบูรณ์ และพบว่าความหนาแน่น มีค่าสูงขึ้นภายหลังจากการปลูกป่า ฮาร์แพกทิคอยด์โคพีพอดในบริเวณป่าชายเลนชุมชนบ้านทุ่งตะเซะ จังหวัดตรังพบทั้งสิ้น 8 วงศ์ ได้แก่ Cletodidae, Darcythompsoniidae, Ectinosomatidae, Harpacticidae, Metidae, Miraciidae, Thalestridae และ Tisbidae โดยพบวงศ์ Cletodidae เป็นกลุ่มเด่น ความหนาแน่นของฮาร์แพกทิคอยด์โคพีพอดบริเวณป่าชายเลนตอนในมีค่าอยู่ในช่วง 9-185 ตัวต่อ 10 ตารางเซนติเมตร ส่วนป่าชายเลนตอนนอกมีความหนาแน่นอยู่ในช่วง 22-169 ตัวต่อ 10 ตารางเซนติเมตร หลังจากปลูกป่าพบว่าความหนาแน่นมีค่าสูงขึ้นเกือบทุกบริเวณที่ทำการศึกษา ยกเว้นบริเวณป่าชายเลนตอนในในสถานีป่าไม้ตะบูนที่ความหนาแน่นช่วงก่อนและหลังปลูกป่ามีค่าใกล้เคียงกัน การศึกษาการกินอาหารของฮาร์แพกทิคอยด์โคพีพอดบริเวณป่าชายเลนชุมชนบ้านทุ่งตะเซะ สามารถจัดกลุ่มการกินอาหารของฮาร์แพกทิคอยด์โคพีพอดได้ทั้งสิ้น 5 กลุ่ม …

The TG-43 dosimetry parameters of the Advantage^{TM 125}I model IAI-125A brachytherapy seed were studied. An investigation using modern MCNP radiation transport code with updated cross-section libraries was performed. Twelve different simulation conditions were studied for a single seed by varying the coating thickness, mass density, photon energy spectrum and cross-section library. The dose rate was found to be 6.3% lower at 1 cm in comparison to published results. New TG-43 dosimetry parameters are proposed.

Management of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., or common reed, an invasive species within the Delaware Bay, U.S. has been ongoing since 1994 as part of the Estuary Enhancement Program (EEP) for Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG). Phragmites is known to alter the habitat by creating a monoculture, increasing sediment trapping, and decreasing water circulation resulting in decreased biodiversity. Herbicide treatment at EEP Phragmites-dominated sites began as a means to mitigate for loss of nekton species resulting from operations of the Hope Creek-Salem Generating Station once-through cooling system. Abstract

Background

This study was undertaken to characterize the vaginal microbiota throughout normal human pregnancy using sequence-based techniques. We compared the vaginal microbial composition of non-pregnant patients with a group of pregnant women who delivered at term.

Results

A retrospective case–control longitudinal study was designed and included non-pregnant women (n = 32) and pregnant women who delivered at term (38 to 42 weeks) without complications (n = 22). Serial samples of vaginal fluid were collected from both non-pregnant and pregnant patients. OBJECTIVES: The high mortality and morbidity rates associated with heart failure are still not well explained. A few psychosocial factors have been studied and explain some of this risk, but other factors, like stress, remain largely unexplored in heart failure. This study aimed to (1) examine the association of stress with 6-month cardiac event-free survival, (2) examine the relationship of stress with salivary cortisol, and (3) examine the association of salivary cortisol level with 6-month cardiac event-free survival.

[Introduction] This species identification guide focuses on the marine species occurring in the eastern Atlantic Ocean from Gibraltar in the north (36°00'N) to the middle of Namibia in the south (23°00'S) and westward to 30°00'W longitude (FAO Fishing Area 34) and to 20°00'W longitude (FAO Fishing Area 47) (Fig 1). Estuarine species, as well as species that only spend part of their life cycle in marine waters (anadromous and catadromous species) are also included.

Background: Absolute risk estimation is a preferred approach for assessing fracture risk and treatment decision making. This study aimed to evaluate and validate the predictive performance of the Garvan Fracture Risk Calculator in a Norwegian cohort.

Methods: The analysis included 1637 women and 1355 aged 60+ years from the Tromsø study. All incident fragility fractures between 2001 and 2009 were registered. The predicted probabilities of non-vertebral osteoporotic and hip fractures were determined using models with and without BMD. Background Cathepsin E (CTSE), an aspartic proteinase, is differentially expressed in the metaplasia–dysplasia–neoplasia sequence of gastric and colon cancer. We evaluated CTSE in Barrett’s esophagus (BE) and cancer because increased CTSE levels are linked to improved survival in several cancers, and other cathepsins are up-regulated in BE and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Methods A total of 273 pretreatment tissues from 199 patients were analyzed [31 normal squamous esophagus (NE), 29 BE intestinal metaplasia, 31 BE with dysplasia (BE/D), 108 EAC]. Background: Robot-assisted surgery is a technically feasible alternative to open and laparoscopic surgery, which is being more frequently used in general surgery. We undertook this review to investigate whether robotic assistance provides a significant benefit for oesophagogastric cancer surgery.

Methods: Electronic databases were searched for original English-language publications for robotic-assisted gastrectomy and oesophagectomy between January 1990 and October 2013.

Results: Sixty-one publications were included. Thirty-five included gastrectomy, 31 included oesophagectomy and five included both operations. Ten morphologically similar species of Acrapex from eastern and south-eastern Africa belonging to the A. stygiata and A. albivena groups are reviewed. Six species are described as new: A. brunneella, A. mitiwa, A. mpika, A. salmona, A. sporobola and A. yakoba. The Poaceae host plants of eight species are recorded; four species, A. mitiwa. In biological control, successful establishment of a natural enemy species depends on its adaptability in the introduced range including its ability to re-establish desired ecological interactions with the pest. These are affected by genetic parameters hitherto largely unresolved in biological control. The larger grain borer (LGB), Prostephanus truncatus, an invasive species from meso-America, is the most important post-harvest pest of maize in Africa. Tsetse flies use olfactory and gustatory responses, through odorant and gustatory receptors (ORs and GRs), to interact with their environment. Glossina morsitans morsitans genome ORs and GRs were annotated using homologs of these genes in Drosophila melanogaster and an ab initio approach based on OR and GR specific motifs in G. m. morsitans gene models coupled to gene ontology (GO). Tsetse flies undergo drastic fluctuations in their water content throughout their adult life history due to events such as blood feeding, dehydration and lactation, an essential feature of the viviparous reproductive biology of tsetse. Aquaporins (AQPs) are transmembrane proteins that allow water and other solutes to permeate through cellular membranes. Here we identify tsetse aquaporin (AQP) genes, examine their expression patterns under different physiological conditions (blood feeding, lactation and stress response) and perform functional analysis of three specific genes utilizing RNA interference (RNAi) gene silencing. This colony is the source for Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) programs in East Africa. Readout of the final states of qubits is a crucial step towards implementing quantum computation in experiment. Although not scalable to large numbers of qubits per molecule, computational studies show that molecular vibrations could provide a significant (factor 2–5 in the literature) increase in the number of qubits compared to two-level systems. In this theoretical work, we explore the process of readout from vibrational qubits in thiophosgene molecule, SCCl₂, using quantum beat oscillations. The quantum beats are measured by first exciting the superposition of the qubit-encoding vibrational states to the electronically excited readout state with variable time-delay pulses. …

Using a large (n=543) multi-ethnic sample of laboratory subjects, we systematically investigate the link between the digit ratio (the ratio of the length of the index finger to the length of the ring finger, also called 2D:4D ratio) and two measures of individual risk taking: (i) risk preferences over lotteries with real monetary incentives and (ii) self-reported risk attitude. Previous studies have found that the digit ratio, a proxy for pre-natal testosterone exposure, correlates with risk taking in some subject samples, but not others. We report the results of experiments where in each period of her lifetime the subject must choose how to allocate real earned income between health investment and life enjoyment in each period of a nine-period life in order to maximize aggregate life enjoyment. The key dynamic optimization challenge of the experiment to subjects derives from the fact that investments in health affect future income, but detract from current consumption. Our experimental results show that subjects were successful at reproducing the qualitative predictions of the theoretical model, investing more in health in the absence of retirement and with increasing income profiles. …

Gender stereotypes and gender-discriminant behaviors have been shown to have strong and undesirable organizational, managerial, and economic effects. We examine the relationship between sexism and accounting practices, and the effect of contextual feedback using laboratory experiments. Sexist stereotypes and contextual feedback may affect the likelihood of financial misstatements and audits when auditors and issuers are of known gender. To investigate these aspects of sexism at zero acquaintance and after contextual feedback, we presented males and females with incentivized belief elicitation tasks about anticipated interaction behaviors and then a series of strategic-communication game decisions in same, other, and unknown gender interactions. …

Empirical evidence suggests that physical characteristics such as obesity can result in a salary gap in the work place. It is, however, not clear how much of this (gap) is due to factors emanating from the demand or supply side of the market. In this paper we use a eld experiment to study whether a part of this wage gap can be attributed to personality traits of individuals on the supply side. Monitors randomly select individuals to respond to a questionnaire. Individuals can make money requests for completing the questionnaire. This paper implements an experimental test of a game-theoretic model of equilibrium profiling. Attackers choose a demographic “type” from which to recruit, and defenders choose which demographic types to search. Some types are more reliable than others in the sense of having a higher probability of carrying out a successful attack if they get past the security checkpoint. In a Nash equilibrium, defenders tend to profile by searching the more reliable attacker types more frequently, whereas the attackers tend to send less reliable types.
