Teacher Matters: Teacher Normative Influence And Student Persistence In College, Jonathan Paul Denham Jan 2014

Teacher Matters: Teacher Normative Influence And Student Persistence In College, Jonathan Paul Denham

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation extends the work on teacher immediacy (TI) and student persistence by using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) (Ajzen, 1985) to account for variability in college student persistence. Students provided perceptions of their teachers’ immediacy behaviors using modified versions of Gorham’s (1988) TI scale. Instruction prompts of the TI scale were manipulated to create four conditions. The results from Study 1 demonstrate that TI scale prompt language has an effect on the ways participants assess their teacher’s immediacy behaviors. The results from Study 2 show that student perceptions of their teacher’s immediacy behaviors change over the course of …

Design, Synthesis, And Antibacterial Properties Of Dual-Ligand Inhibitors Of Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase And Mechanism Of Action For The Antibacterial Agent Moiramide B, Molly Anne Silvers Jan 2014

Design, Synthesis, And Antibacterial Properties Of Dual-Ligand Inhibitors Of Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase And Mechanism Of Action For The Antibacterial Agent Moiramide B, Molly Anne Silvers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

An urgent demand for the development of new antibiotics has been created by the increase in clinical cases involving drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria. A novel target for antibacterial development is acetyl-CoA carboxylase, a multifunctional enzyme that catalyzes the first committed step in fatty acid synthesis. The bacterial form of the enzyme consists of three proteins: biotin carboxylase, biotin carboxyl carrier protein, and carboxyltransferase. The research presented in this dissertation describes dual-ligand inhibitors incorporating selective inhibitors against biotin carboxylase and carboxyltransferase that were synthesized by covalently attaching them with saturated hydrocarbon linkers containing 7 and 15 carbon atoms. The ability to inhibit …

Novel Syntheses And Surface Modifications Of Electrode Materials For Superior Lithium-Ion Batteries, Jianqing Zhao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Rechargeable lithium-ion battery is one of the most promising energy conversion and storage systems that offers high energy and powder densities, long service life and assuring safety. Performance of lithium-ion batteries crucially relies on electrochemical characteristics of electrode materials, i.e., anode and cathode materials. This dissertation work aims at developing novel electrode materials with high capacity, excellent cycling stability and remarkable rate capability for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. The effects of surface modifications for LiMn2O4 cathode materials are studied by depositing ultrathin conformal amphoteric oxides via atomic layer deposition (ALD). In the case of ZnO coating, the thickness of ZnO ALD …

Effects Of Dietary Conjugated Linoleic Acid Supplementation On Bovine Oocyte Lipid Metabolism, Lipid Composition And Embryo Cryotolerance, Cody Lee Bailey Jan 2014

Effects Of Dietary Conjugated Linoleic Acid Supplementation On Bovine Oocyte Lipid Metabolism, Lipid Composition And Embryo Cryotolerance, Cody Lee Bailey

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Variation in cryotolerance exists between embryos from different animal breed, species and management conditions. Reduced tolerance to chilling and cryotolerance of oocytes and embryos has been associated with greater cytoplasmic lipids (Kim et al., 2001; Seidel, 2006). Previous studies in the cow have demonstrated nutrition-induced modification of follicular components. Trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) was identified as a potent inhibitor of milk fat synthesis in lactating cows (Baumgard et al., 2000) and inclusion of CLA in bovine embryo culture medium improved post-thaw embryo survival (Pereira et al., 2007). Dietary supplementation of cows with CLA could alter oocyte fatty acid …

Genetics And Genomics Studies Of Rice Disease Resistance And Development Of Alternative Disease Management Methods For Bacterial Panicle Blight And Sheath Blight, Bishnu Kumar Shrestha Jan 2014

Genetics And Genomics Studies Of Rice Disease Resistance And Development Of Alternative Disease Management Methods For Bacterial Panicle Blight And Sheath Blight, Bishnu Kumar Shrestha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bacterial panicle blight (BPB) and sheath blight (SB), caused by the bacteria Burkholderia glumae and B. gladioli, and the fungus Rhizoctonia solani, respectively, are two major rice diseases in southern rice growing regions of US. No completely resistant rice cultivars have been identified for these diseases. However, a medium-grain cultivar, Jupiter, showed partial resistance to BPB. In order to understand the mechanisms of rice resistance against BPB and SB, rice genetics and genomics studies have been conducted. Alternative methods to suppress BPB and SB were also studied. Broad-sense heritability and correlations were calculated for the traits, BPB and SB disease …

Characterization Of A Water Soluble, Non-Ionic, Helical Poly(Α-Amino Acid), Wayne Huberty Jan 2014

Characterization Of A Water Soluble, Non-Ionic, Helical Poly(Α-Amino Acid), Wayne Huberty

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A water soluble, non-ionic, rodlike polymer, PEGL, was synthesized and characterized in efforts to synthesize a novel model polymer to study stiff polymers in solution. The rodlike system is likely stiff due to a high relative percent helicity in water up to 50 °C, measured by circular dichroism, the observation of liquid crystalline domains in water, and from the slope measured from conformation plots supplied by GPC/MALS; however, it also apparent the system is aggregating in both a 2 mM azide solution and a buffer (200 mM NaNO3 + 20 mM NaH2PO4 + 2 mM NaN3), in corroboration of negative …

Enhancement Of Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Fitness And Reproduction, Joshua Thomas Patterson Jan 2014

Enhancement Of Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Fitness And Reproduction, Joshua Thomas Patterson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, shows promise for commercial development as a marine baitfish species. Significant markets for F. grandis already exist throughout the Gulf Coast, with the vast majority of supply coming from wild-harvests, which can be hampered by seasonal availability and inconsistent fish health and size. The genus Fundulus also represents an important group of model vertebrates for biological study. A recent review paper described this genus as the premier teleost model for environmental biology. New information generated as a result of the work contained in this dissertation may be more broadly applicable to sister species of F. grandis, …

Outer Surface Lipoprotein Layer Homeostasis And Gene Regulation In Borrelia Burgdorferi, Poonam Dadhwal Jan 2014

Outer Surface Lipoprotein Layer Homeostasis And Gene Regulation In Borrelia Burgdorferi, Poonam Dadhwal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The outer surface lipoprotein (osp) layer forms an interface between the internal and the external environment of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. The homeostatic maintenance of the osp layer effectuates adaptation of B. burgdorferi as it gets transmitted from the tick vector to a mammalian host and vice-versa. However, the regulation of the outer surface lipoproteins (osps) is still a conundrum for borrelia scientists. Part of this dissertation inquires about the homeostatic maintenance of the osp layer. We found that the deletion of the dominantly expressed tick phase osp, OspA, induces expression of two other osps. OspD, and BBJ41. …

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes of substance-abusing mothers and fathers entering outpatient treatment toward allowing their children to participate in individual- or family-based interventions. Data were collected from a brief anonymous survey completed by adults at intake into a large substance abuse treatment program in western New York. Only one-third of parents reported that they would be willing to allow their children to participate in any form of mental health treatment. Results of chi-square analyses revealed that a significantly greater proportion of mothers reported that they would allow their children to participate in mental health treatment …

Introduction To Freedom And Criminal Responsibility In American Legal Thought, Andrew Thomas Green Jan 2014

Introduction To Freedom And Criminal Responsibility In American Legal Thought, Andrew Thomas Green

Other Publications

The free will problem inherent in the acts of blaming and punishing is age-old and well-known. It has largely to do with the notion of just desserts. Conventionally, most of us tend to believe that the attribution of guilt and the imposition of punishment are deserved only if it may fairly be said that the actor exercised some degree of free choice, or – as it is often put – could have chosen not to do what he or she did. Yet most of us also believe there are limits to freedom of choice in particular circumstances, and some question …

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) trials using tenofovir-based regimens have demonstrated that high levels of adherence are required to evaluate efficacy; the incorporation of objective biomarkers of adherence in trial design has been essential to interpretation, given the inaccuracy of self-report. Antiretroviral measurements in scalp hair have been useful as a marker of long-term exposure in the HIV treatment setting, and hair samples are relatively easy and inexpensive to collect, transport, and store for analysis. To evaluate the relationship between dose and tenofovir concentrations in hair, we examined the dose proportionality of tenofovir in hair in healthy, HIV-uninfected adults.

Hypothesis Testing In Normal Admixture Models To Detect Heterogeneous Genetic Signals, Qian Fan, Richard Charnigo, Zohreh Talebizadeh, Hongying Dai Jan 2014

Hypothesis Testing In Normal Admixture Models To Detect Heterogeneous Genetic Signals, Qian Fan, Richard Charnigo, Zohreh Talebizadeh, Hongying Dai

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

In this work we consider a three-component normal mixture model in which one component is known to have mean zero and the other two contaminating components have a nonnegative and a nonpositive mean respectively, while all three components share a common unknown variance parameter. One potential application of this model may be in prioritizing statistical scores obtained in biological experiments, including genetics data. Such a mixture model may be useful in describing the distribution of numerous Z test statistics corresponding to different genes or SNPs, such that a “significant” Z test statistic for a particular gene suggests its connection to …

Development And Utilization Of Multiplex Pcr - High Resolution Melting (Hrm) Assay For Detection Of Arboviral Pathogens, Martin Mbaya Koome Jan 2014

Development And Utilization Of Multiplex Pcr - High Resolution Melting (Hrm) Assay For Detection Of Arboviral Pathogens, Martin Mbaya Koome

All Master’s Theses

Arthropod borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted by blood sucking arthropods. Disease outbreaks caused by arboviruses are sporadic and unpredictable. Arboviral disease outbreaks in Kenya have confirmed the presence of a number of arboviral diseases within the human and animal populace. Currently, there are no approved or specific therapies for arboviral infections; treatment is limited to palliative care. Early detection and vector control are important strategies in control of arboviruses. However, there is not yet a single detection system that is capable of detecting all arboviruses simultaneously. The development of realtime thermocyclers capable of high resolution melting (HRM) analysis has enabled …

Effect Of Controphic Species On Natural Population Dynamics Of Malaria Mosquito Larvae On Rusinga Island, Caroline Mirieri Kwamboka Jan 2014

Effect Of Controphic Species On Natural Population Dynamics Of Malaria Mosquito Larvae On Rusinga Island, Caroline Mirieri Kwamboka

All Master’s Theses

Controphic species are organisms that share the same trophic levels within an ecosystem.Ecological theory and empirical research show that controphic species affect mosquito larval populations through predation or competition. The goal of this study was to identify controphic species that may serve as potential biological control agents for malaria mosquito larvae. A baseline survey of the abundance and diversity of malaria mosquito larvae (target species) and assemblages of their controphic species in breeding sites present on Rusinga Island was conducted. The effects of physicochemical factors on mosquito larval dynamics were also evaluated. The Renyi, Inverse Simpson and Shannon diversity indices …

The Prevalence Of Trypanosoma Congolense Savannah In Shimba Hills, Kenya And Development Of A Genotyping Protocol, Julianne Mendi Muthinja Jan 2014

The Prevalence Of Trypanosoma Congolense Savannah In Shimba Hills, Kenya And Development Of A Genotyping Protocol, Julianne Mendi Muthinja

All Master’s Theses

Eleven species/subspecies belonging to the genus Trypanosoma, cause African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) with Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma congolense being the predominant pathogens. Annually, AAT leads to losses worth 4.5 billion dollars to livestock dependent economies in Sub-Saharan Africa. In order to manage the disease, trypanocidal drugs have been in use. However, parasites resistant to these trypanocides have emerged making the treatment of AAT difficult. Parasite resistance to trypanocides is one among the few variable phenotypes whose genetic basis is poorly understood. There is need to create a link between the genetic component, environmental component and phenotypic manifestation of the parasite. …

Occurrence Of Aflatoxin Contamination On Maize In The Lower Eastern Kenya And Evaluation Of Superabsorbent Polymers In Its Management, Livine O. Nyakundi

All Master’s Theses

Food and feed safety has been a major concern in most countries in the recent times as more knowledge is being generated on the occurrence of natural toxins in foodstuffs and edible plant species. Among the natural toxins, aflatoxins have been given more attention due to their hazardous effects to animals and human beings. A study was conducted on aflatoxin contamination in maize samples collected from lower eastern counties in Kenya. The maize samples were collected through a survey that was conducted in Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties where aflatoxin contaminations has been a perennial problem. The samples were cultured …

Performance And Behaviour Of The Leafhopper (Maiestas Banda; Homoptera: Cicadellidae) Vector Of The Napier Stunt Disease On Napier Grass (Pennisetum Purpureum), Mabel Chigora Jan 2014

Performance And Behaviour Of The Leafhopper (Maiestas Banda; Homoptera: Cicadellidae) Vector Of The Napier Stunt Disease On Napier Grass (Pennisetum Purpureum), Mabel Chigora

All Master’s Theses

Napier grass remains an important strategic grass species in east African mixed crop-livestock systems. However, production of several varieties of the grass remains constrained by phytoplasmic disease, Napier stunt disease (NSD), which is transmitted by the leafhopper, Maiestas banda. For smallholder farmers of western Kenya who rely on the grass for livestock feed and pest control in push-pull farming systems, effective control strategies of the disease and the vector remain elusive. With a view to understanding potential host plant resistance mechanisms against the leafhopper, I investigated growth, development and behaviour of the leafhopper on a variety of host plants: Pearl …

Public Perceptions Of The Uk Marine Environment, Rl Jefferson, I Bailey, Dd Laffoley, Jp Richards, Mj Attrill

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The damaging effects of human activities on marine health suggest that a major shift is required in the way marine systems are used by individuals. Identifying how to engage society in this shift is an ongoing debate. This includes strengthening the positive connections between society and the sea. This study uses a survey (n¼1047) to investigate UK public perceptions of subtidal species and marine health to assess whether it is possible to build more positive connections between society and the sea. Respondents showed considerable interest in traditionally charismatic species (puffins, seals and seahorses) although many respondents thought these species did …

Gay Rights, Equal Protection, And The Classification-Framing Quandary, Peter Nicolas Jan 2014

Gay Rights, Equal Protection, And The Classification-Framing Quandary, Peter Nicolas

Articles

Commentators and lower courts will speculate for some time on the actual holding and potential sweep of the Supreme Court's decision in Windsor v. United States [699 F.3d 169, 175 (2d Cir. 2012), aff'd, 133 S. Ct. 2675 (2013)], as well as how the Court might have resolved Perry v. Brown [671 F.3d 1052, 1063 (9th Cir. 2012), vacated and remanded sub nom. Hollingsworth v. Perry, 133 S. Ct. 2652 (2013)] on the merits.

Of at least equal and perhaps greater importance, however, is a subtle yet critical unresolved threshold question lurking in the background of these two decisions, …

Straddling The Columbia: A Constitutional Law Professor's Musings On Circumventing Washington State's Criminal Prohibition On Compensated Surrogacy, Peter Nicolas

Articles

In this Article, I recount—through both the prisms of an intended parent and a constitutional law scholar—my successful efforts to become a parent via compensated surrogacy and egg donation. Part I of this Article provides a narrative of my experience in becoming a parent via compensated surrogacy, and the various state and federal legal roadblocks and deterrents that I encountered along the way, including Washington State's criminal prohibition on compensated surrogacy as well as federal guidelines issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regarding the use of sperm by gay donors in the process of in vitro fertilization.

The Long-Term Tort: In Search Of A New Causation Framework For Natural Resources Damages, Sanne H. Knudsen Jan 2014

The Long-Term Tort: In Search Of A New Causation Framework For Natural Resources Damages, Sanne H. Knudsen

Articles

Recent scientific evidence is proving that toxic releases have long-term, unintended, and harmful consequences for the marine environment. Though a new paradigm is emerging in the scientific literature--one demonstrating that long-term impacts from oil spills are more significant than previously thought--legal scholars, regulators, and courts have yet to consider the law's ability to remedy long-term ecological harms.

While scholars have exhaustively debated causation questions related to latent injuries for toxic torts, they have overlooked the equally important and conceptually similar causation problems of long-term damages in the natural resource context. Likewise, only a few courts have considered the standards of …

Digital Market Manipulation, Ryan Calo Jan 2014

Digital Market Manipulation, Ryan Calo

Articles

In 1999, Jon Hanson and Douglas Kysar coined the term “market manipulation” to describe how companies exploit the cognitive limitations of consumers. For example, everything costs $9.99 because consumers see the price as closer to $9 than $10. Although widely cited by academics, the concept of market manipulation has had only a modest impact on consumer protection law.

This Article demonstrates that the concept of market manipulation is descriptively and theoretically incomplete, and updates the framework of the theory to account for the realities of a marketplace that is mediated by technology. Today’s companies fastidiously study consumers and, increasingly, personalize …

Critically Developing Real Capabilities, Christopher Byron Jan 2014

Critically Developing Real Capabilities, Christopher Byron

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Critical Realism, the Capabilities Approach, and Marxism, all have underdeveloped theoretical problems. For Critical Realism, the ceteris paribus clause, which is used to asses an ideological critique, does not properly specify what other things warrant the dismissal or acceptance of said critique. For the Capabilities Approach, a proper ontology or metaphysics is missing, and the claim that the Capabilities Approach can be metaphysically neutral is false. Finally, Marxism is good at describing the more onerous aspects of capitalism (e.g., alienation, exploitation, crisis), but it does not provide normative force for seeing these descriptions as bad. I argue that these three …

Investigating Mentors' Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Using Resiliency-Building Strategies Within An At-Risk Adolescent Intervention Program, Nicholas Dzoba

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research study seeks to enhance previous mentoring literature (Converse & Lignugaris, 2008; Cavell, Elledge, Malcolm, & Faith, 2009; Devenport & Lane, 2009) by further identifying the strategies and skills which help mentors form quality relationships and ultimately impact the resilience of at-risk adolescent mentees. Specifically, this study investigates volunteer mentors’ perceptions of incorporating the positive coping strategies of active listening, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and future orientation within the initial stages of the mentoring process. Participants in this study are divided into two groups: the Coping Strategies (CS) Group and the Untrained Group (UG). The CS Group mentors have …

Effects Of Elevated Salinity And Oxidative Stress On The Physiology Of The Toxigenic Cyanobacterium Microcystis Aeruginosa, Billy Christopher Warhurst Jan 2014

Effects Of Elevated Salinity And Oxidative Stress On The Physiology Of The Toxigenic Cyanobacterium Microcystis Aeruginosa, Billy Christopher Warhurst

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are found worldwide, particularly in places where warm, well-lit, and stagnant waters are common. HABs can have negative effects on aquatic plants and wildlife due to the reduction in light availability associated with turbidity, decrease in O2 availability, and the production of secondary metabolites that can harm or even prove lethal. Aquatic ecosystems are regularly being affected by elevated salinity because of recent water management strategies, episodes of drought, and salt water intrusion. This research focused on how salinity levels ranging from 0-10ppt affected physiological attributes such as cellular growth and abundance, cell mortality, toxin …
