Continuous Monitoring Of Turning In Patients With Movement Disability, Mahmoud Ahmed El-Gohary, Sean Pearson, James Mcnames, Martina Mancini, Fay Horak, Sabato Mellone, Lorenzo Chiari
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Difficulty with turning is a major contributor to mobility disability and falls in people with movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). Turning often results in freezing and/or falling in patients with PD. However, asking a patient to execute a turn in the clinic often does not reveal their impairments. Continuous monitoring of turning with wearable sensors during spontaneous daily activities may help clinicians and patients determine who is at risk of falls and could benefit from preventative interventions. In this study, we show that continuous monitoring of natural turning with wearable sensors during daily activities inside and outside the …

A medical system whether traditional or modern, is a long chain of processes of humanstrategy for adapting to their ecological bio-cultural environment. Naturally humans developtheir biological ability to sustain their kind and develop many adaptation strategies, creatingmedical systems, behavior, and belief sbased on culture as a natural response to the treat ofillness and disease, even though the result of certain behavior does not guarantee the healingof such illness and disease (Dunn in Foster-Anderson, 1986; p.41). under that circumstances,Minangkabau medical systems are seen as a result of a bio-eco-culturally adapting process.Local Etiology of the disease source is closely related to the …

Structure Vs. Properties Using Chemical Graph Theory, Tabitha N. Williford
Structure Vs. Properties Using Chemical Graph Theory, Tabitha N. Williford
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Chemical graph theory began as a way for mathematicians to bring together the areas of the Physical Sciences and Mathematics. Through its use, mathematicians are able to model chemical systems, predict their properties as well as structure-property relationships. In this dissertation, we consider two questions involving chemical graph theory and its applications. We first look at tree-like polyphenyl systems, which form an important family of compounds in Chemistry, particularly in Material Science. The importance can be seen in LEDs, transmitters, and electronics. In recent years, many extremal results regarding such systems under specific constraints have been reported. More specifically are …

Stimulus Modality And The Rotational Error: An Examination Of The Various Reorientation Accounts In Humans Using A 3d Virtual Environment, Samuel P. Police
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Reorientation occurs when an organism enters a novel environment and utilizes cues within said environment to get its bearings. Though reorientation occurs, little is known about which cues are utilized to reorient and the mechanism underlying this reorientation process. Three competing accounts of how the reorientation process occurs were presented and discussed in terms of which cues are predicted to be utilized in reorientation: the geometric module, the associative strength model, and the adaptive-combination view. In the present experiment, human participants were trained in an immersive, 3D virtual environment trapezoid to local a goal location in the presence of either …
Cytological Evidence For Gametophytic Self-Incompatibility In The Genus Veronica, Romain Scalone, Dirk Albach
Cytological Evidence For Gametophytic Self-Incompatibility In The Genus Veronica, Romain Scalone, Dirk Albach
Turkish Journal of Botany
The self-incompatibility (SI) of 3 Middle East Veronica species (V. filiformis, V. gentianoides, V. teucrium) is studied, for the first time, by pollination and pollen tube growth experiments. Cytological observations of the self-pollen tubes within the pistils permit a conclusion about the presence of a gametophytic SI system in the first 2 species. The investigated population of the third is self-compatible and confirms the facultative trait of its self-sterility. The presence of a gametophytic SI system in 2 of them suggests the putative conservation of this SI system within the genus Veronica (Plantaginaceae) and could be related to the well-known …

Cystatin responses in sugarcane plants under drought stress have not previously been reported. To test the hypothesis that sugar cane cystatin can function as an osmotic stress tolerance gene, transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) strains with the ability to express sugarcane cystatin were constructed. The osmotic stress tolerance of the transgenic yeasts was then evaluated, and it was found that the transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) had increased growth and increased osmotic stress tolerance. To gain a greater understanding of the responses of sugarcane cystatin to drought, 1 drought-susceptible and 3 drought-tolerant sugarcane cultivars …

Experiments were carried out from 2010 to 2013 to investigate multiple aspects of rice stink bug (RSB) integrated pest management (IPM): insecticide recommendations, sampling efficiency, treatment thresholds, farmer practices, and improved educational tools. The first objective of this research was to compare the efficacies of currently used insecticides with that of a new product from the neonicotinoid class of insecticides. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory, small field plots, and commercial fields across Louisiana. Results from efficacy trials showed that the neonicotinoid was comparable to pyrethroid products used most by rice producers in Louisiana. Conversely, in separate experiments the …
The Imagined After: Re-Positioning Social Memory Through Twentieth-Century Post-Apocalyptic Literature And Film, Amanda Ashleigh Wicks
The Imagined After: Re-Positioning Social Memory Through Twentieth-Century Post-Apocalyptic Literature And Film, Amanda Ashleigh Wicks
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Maurice Halbwachs first proposed a collective approach to memory in the early twentieth century, but the vast majority of subsequent scholarship investigates memory’s social properties from a theoretical point of view. This project instead proposes that memory functions as a social phenomenon in significant and real ways, primarily understood through the social relations that arise within social frameworks, which provide a structure against which people’s memories come together to form important memory-narratives that configure individual and social consciousness. Once people transform memory from individual thought-image into socially structured language, memory takes on social properties. Memory relies upon social frameworks to …

Chatting About Science : A Qualitative Study On Increasing The Number And Depth Of Science-Based Conversations Among Aquarium Visitor Groups, Erika Kristen Poarch
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Informal science education centers, including aquariums, are often tasked with educating the general public on conservation issues, natural environments, and general science topics. The public tends to see these centers as entertaining leisure destinations in which they have the opportunity to learn something about the presented information. It is widely accepted that learning in informal environments is shaped by the learner’s motivations, interests, background knowledge, and social interactions. However, these impacting factors are rarely studied in depth, particularly across different types of visitors. This qualitative case study project integrates original research on visitor interests, motivations, and self-reported learning into the …
Phylogenetic And Morphological Community Structure Of North American Desert Bats, Lorelei Elizabeth Patrick
Phylogenetic And Morphological Community Structure Of North American Desert Bats, Lorelei Elizabeth Patrick
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Patterns of community structure may be examined using phylogenetic and morphological data; these patterns can then be used to infer the processes that gave rise to these patterns. Communities made up of similar species may be structured by habitat filtering, wherein only species with traits necessary to survive in a particular location are found there. Communities made up of dissimilar species may have been structured by competition, which reduces overlap in resource use. I examined the sensitivity of phylogenetic community structure (PCS) metrics to changes in phylogeny and community delimitation method, investigated patterns of PCS and correlation to environmental variables …
