This study was carried out between March 2011 and February 2012 on Değirmendere Stream in order to determine the water quality of the stream, and to investigate the environmental quality and the applicability of both the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP; Original, Spanish, Hungarian, Czech, and Polish versions) and Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT; Original, Hungarian, and Czech versions) indices. This study aims to investigate some biological characteristics of Atlantic bonito, Sarda sarda Bloch, 1793, from the Turkish coasts of the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. A total of 212 S. sarda (100 females, 89 males, and 23 undetermined) were sampled monthly between May 2011 and September 2012. The sex ratio (male/female) was 0.89; females prevailed but not statistically significantly so. Fork lengths of all sampled individuals ranged from 17.7 to 63.0 cm. The length-weight relationship for all individuals was calculated as W = 0.01 L^{3.085}. The ages of the fish ranged from 0+ to 2+. Growth parameters …

In this study, we present the effects of reed burning and precipitation on the breeding success of Great Reed Warblers on a mining pond (2008-2011). Breeding success, i.e. the probability that an egg would produce a fledgling, was 0.43. Clutch survival was lowest in 2010, due to the precipitation and high water level during the season. Breeding success was higher in the second half of the breeding season, although in 2008 and 2011 precipitation was also higher in the second half than in the first half of the breeding season. The morphometric and meristic characters of 2 F_2 hybrid striped bass (M. chrysops female × M. saxatilis male × M. chrysops female × M. saxatilis male) from the family Moronidae are described. Two specimens were caught from Kemer Dam Lake. The body of the F_2 hybrid striped bass was elongated, moderately compressed, and scaly. Dorsal surface and sides were silver and black to olive-gray, and the abdomen was white in color. Four or 5 longitudinal broken stripes ran above the lateral line to the caudal fin. The Sichuan golden monkey is deserving of conservation and the welfare of this species is receiving increasing attention. However, it is difficult to identify physiological parameters for assessing its conservation status. In the present study, we employed noninvasive sampling methods and immunochemical assays to determine if measurements of cortisol and immunoglobulin in feces allowed monitoring of physiological status. The results indicated that the cortisol and immunoglobulin concentrations in feces could serve as biomarkers for monitoring stress and immune status, and that there was a relationship between stress and the immune response. The sawfly Cimbex quadrimaculata (Müller) (Hymenoptera: Cimbicidae) has been identified as a serious defoliator of young almond plants in Antalya. Two ichneumonid parasitoids, Opheltes glaucopterus (Linnaeus) and Phobetes nigriceps (Gravenhorst) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Ctenopelmatinae), were reared as larva-pupa parasitoids of C. quadrimaculata. Of these, P. nigriceps was obtained for the first time from C. quadrimaculata; it is a new record for the Turkish fauna as well as for the continent of Asia.

New Data About Ptyctimous Mites (Acari, Oribatida) In Polish Palm Houses, Wojciech Niedbala

In samples collected in 2012 at the palm house in Poznan, 5 species of ptyctimous mites were found; 3 of them were native species (Mesotritia nuda, Euphthiracarus cribrarius, Acrotritia ardua) and 2 were exotic species, pantropical Microtritia tropica and neotropical Phthiracarus phoxos. In the samples from the palm house in Lodz, 3 species were found; 2 of them were known from the palm house in Poznan (Acrotritia ardua and Phthiracarus ferrugineus), and the third has not been reported from Poland before: the very rare species Mesoplophora michaeliana, known so far from the southern part of the Western Palearctic. Various forms of disordered eating and unhealthy eating practices, including excessive dieting, vomiting, binging and purging, and diet-motivated drug use, negatively affect and are potentially fatal to millions of individuals. We describe the etiology of disordered eating as well as various hypotheses on this phenomenon, both from traditional, non-evolutionary perspectives and from evolutionary perspectives. In particular, we explore in detail the intrasexual competition hypothesis, which draws on a broad evolutionary theory: intrasexual selection. The Heart of Borneo ('HoB') transboundary initiative spans the territory of Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. In this article I evaluate the HoB against governance criteria for effective transboundary conservation. This approach provides the framework for proposing what complementary reforms may be needed to improve the effectiveness of the initiative. Governance issues and the lack of political buy-in are identified as the most significant impediments to successful transboundary biodiversity conservation in the HoB. This paper highlights the implementation of an intelligent bus monitoring system based on current challenges and problems. In this system, radio frequency identification and integrated sensing technologies, such as a global positioning system, general packet radio service, and geographic information system, are used to monitor the movement of a bus. A new theoretical framework and ruled-based decision algorithms are developed for the system. An experimental setup is developed for the prototype implementation. The results show that the choice of integrated technologies used in the system is suitable to monitor and manage a vehicle transportation system.

This paper investigates the possibility of classifying power system dynamics events using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and a neural network (NN) by analyzing one variable at a single network bus. Following a disturbance in the power system, it will propagate through the system in the form of low-frequency electromechanical oscillations (LFEOs) in a frequency range of up to 5 Hz. Gender is a core element of identity that is policed by the prison system and by the law that governs prisons. Focusing on developments within Canadian transgender jurisprudence, this paper explores how prisoners’ bodies that do not conform to a strict gender binary are defined as inhuman. We fabricated a poly [3-hexylthiophene] (P3HT) and [6,6] -phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC₆₁BM with the TiO_x layer. We found that a solution based TiO_x coated at a spin speed of 3000 rpm improved the photon absorption of the active layer. An optimized TiO_x layer was also used as the interfacial layer to investigate the stability of P3HT: PC₆₁BM OPC. After 70 days of storage, we observed that the short-circuit current density (J_SC) dropped by 16.2%, fill factor (FF) dropped by 10.6%, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) dropped approximately by 25%, while …

Nuclear disarmament-the comprehensive, universal, and permanent abolition of all nuclear weapons, pursuant to a verifiable, legally binding international agreement-has long been one of the most ambitious, controversial, and urgent items on the agenda for arms control. To date, however, most of the discussion of "getting to zero" has highlighted the political, military, technical and diplomatic dimensions of this complex problem, and there has been relatively little attention to the legal requirements for drafting such a novel treaty.

This article performs three functions. First, it offers a revisionist interpretation of the 1928 Kellogg-Briand Pact, the much-maligned treaty through which the key powers of the era, led by the United States, undertook to “outlaw” war, renouncing it as a tool of national policy and committing themselves to resort exclusively to pacific means for the resolution of their international disputes. Because of Kellogg-Briand’s inability to prevent the outbreak of World War II, the treaty has been derided for decades as a futile, utopian illusion, but this article argues that it was, in fact, a tremendous success in altering states’ attitudes …

In total, 131 species belonging to 46 families have been reported: 82 species from the Aegean Sea, 63 species from the Sea of Marmara, 51 species from the Levantine Sea, and 13 species from the Black Sea. This paper presents the actual status of species diversity of the phyla Cnidaria and Ctenophora along the Turkish coasts of the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, the Aegean Sea, and the Levantine Sea. A total of 195 cnidarian species belonging to 5 classes (Hydrozoa, Cubozoa, Scyphozoa, Staurozoa, and Anthozoa) have been determined in these regions. The present paper provides an updated taxonomic list of sipunculan species known from the coasts of Turkey. A total of 21 species belonging to 5 families have been reported from the region. Eighteen species were determined in the Levantine Sea, 17 species in the Aegean Sea, 6 species in the Sea of Marmara, and a single species in the Black Sea. The compilation of papers on marine annelids along the coasts of Turkey together with new records of species (24 species) presented in this study yielded a total of 721 species belonging to 2 classes (Polychaeta and Clitellata), 60 families, and 352 genera. Polychaeta were represented by 705 species, Oligochaeta by 13 species, and Hirudinea by 3 species. Syllidae (119 species) and Serpulidae (56 species) were the species-rich polychaete families.
