Effects Of Tea (Camellia Sinensis) On Antioxidant Potential And Fermentation Characteristics Of Yogurt / Premalatha A/P Muniandy, Premalatha Muniandy

Student Works (2010-2019)

The present study investigated the effects of green, white and black tea (Camellia sinensis; 2% w/v) on the fermentation of milk and antioxidant potential of yogurt. Each tea (water extract) was added into milk-starter culture mixture and incubation was carried out at 42°C until pH was reduced to 4.5. The yogurts were then refrigerated (4°C) for up to 21 days and samples were analysed for antioxidant potential (diphenyl picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and ferrous ion chelating (FIC) assays), pH, titratable acid and viable yogurt bacteria counts. Tea yogurts had higher antioxidant potentials (p < 0.05) than plain yogurt with green tea yogurt (GTY) having the highest FRAP (2.49 - 2.98 mmol Fe2+ E/L) and black tea yogurt (BTY) having the highest FIC (87.50 - 89.87 %) activity throughout the storage period. Both GTY (90.07 - 96.74%) and white tea yogurt (WTY; 89.83 - 96.39%) showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity throughout the storage period. The presence of green and black tea water extracts prolonged the milk fermentation time (>270 minutes …

Separation Of Metallic And Semiconducting Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Aqueous Two-Phase Technique / Malcolm Tang Siong Yii, Siong Yii Malcolm Tang

Student Works (2010-2019)

The presence of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (M-SWCNT) in as-prepared single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) poses a significant hurdle to integrate carbon nanotubes into semiconductor electronics. Here the findings of enriching semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (S-SWCNT) using an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) is reported. The solution containing as received SWCNT and polyethylene glycol (PEG), dextran, N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and water effectively separates into two distinct phases, with S-SWNT dominant in one phase while the M-SWCNT congregates in another phase. The separation process is due to the attraction of amine and S-SWCNT as reported by Chattopadhyay. Micro-Raman spectroscopy and Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy results show …

Identification Of Rb1 Germ-Line Mutations In Patients With Retinoblastoma / Kavimalar A/P Renganathan, Kavimalar Renganathan

Student Works (2010-2019)

Background: Retinoblastoma (RB1; OMIM#180200) is the most common intraocular tumor in early childhood. The malignancy mainly affects children under five years of age, with a prevalence of 1:15,000 to 1:20,000. RB1 or retinoblastoma susceptibility gene is the gene associated with retinoblastoma and is located on chromosome 13q14.2. The whole coding region of RB1 has 27 exons. The gene encodes a tumor suppressor, the retinoblastoma protein (pRB). Retinoblastoma develops when both alleles of the tumor suppressor gene are inactivated by loss-of-function mutations. The hereditary predisposition to the disease is caused by germ-line mutations in RB1. Since RB1 is a tumor suppressor …

Utility Of Bats (Chiroptera) As Ecological Indicators In Peninsular Malaysia / Khairunnisa Binti Syaripuddin, Khairunnisa Syaripuddin

Student Works (2010-2019)

As ecologists we are tasked with studying the effects of environmental changes on ecosystems, but it is impossible to study every species and every interaction. Therefore, a relatively small group of species must be chosen as a proxy for monitoring general patterns of ecological change. Bats might be suitable for the role as ecological indicators because they have high species richness and abundance, represent several distinct feeding guilds, occupy high trophic positions, and perform key ecosystem services such as pollination, seed dispersal, nutrient recycling and arthropod control. A critical prerequisite for an ecological indicator group is stable and accurate species …

Taxonomy And Phylogeny Of Crustose Brown Algae (Phaeophyceae) From Malaysia And Lombok Island, Indonesia / Poong Sze Wan, Sze Wan Poong

Student Works (2010-2019)

Studies on crustose brown algae are relatively few despite a long history of studies conducted since the 1800s, with temperate species forming the bulk of these studies. There is a need for more focus on crustose brown algae particularly in the tropics as they are generally different from those in the temperate regions. These algae received little attention due to their simple appearance (brownish-black spots on rocks) and lack of apparent economic value despite some being the dominant flora of certain habitats. Taxonomic confusion arising from morphological simplicity largely dependent on the reproductive structures and overlap in morpho-anatomical features among …

Development Of A Climate Change Vulnerability Index For Peninsular Malaysia / Wong Foong Mei, Foong Mei Wong

Student Works (2010-2019)

There are two factors that can affect changes in climate; internal variation and external forcing. The warming and cooling trend is determined by increases of the concentration of greenhouse gases, which consists of water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Even if greenhouse gas emissions were stabilised instantly at today’s level, the climate would still continue to change as it adapts to the increased emission of recent decades. This is because climate change in the future is greatly influence by the past emissions. Therefore, further changes in climate are unavoidable. Since 21st century, the issue of climate change has …

Student Works (2010-2019)

Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) is a primary immunodeficiency disease (PID) in which the defect lies at the neutrophil intracellular killing step of the phagocytosis process. It is caused by a dysfunctional respiratory burst enzyme Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate (NADPH)-oxidase, a multi-protein complex making CGD a heterogeneous disease. X-linked CGD (X-CGD) is due to a mutation in the CYBB gene that codes for gp91-phox, while autosomal CGD is caused by mutations in genes that code for p22-phox, p47-phox, p67-phox, p40-phox and Rac2. The incidence of Klinefelter’s Syndrome and CGD occurring together is extremely rare. This study describes a family where the …

Molecular And Functional Indication Of Chalcone Synthase In Boesenbergia Rotunda / Fatemeh Shahhosseini, Fatemeh Shahhosseini

Student Works (2010-2019)

Chalcone synthase (CHS) is a key enzyme in flavonoids biosynthesis pathway, which catalyzes the condensation of three acetate residues from malonyl-CoA with pcoumaroyl- CoA to form naringenin chalcone. This step is the first committed step of the phenylpropanoid pathway, which regulates other sub-branches to produce flavonoids, isoflavonoids, anthocyanin, chalcone, and other flavonoids compounds in plants. Several studies have shown that the flavonoids and chalcones are pharmaceutically active in Boesenbergia rotunda, but the purification is often impossible due to the low concentration of these flavonoids. Most studies recently focused on the individual genes of the pathway such as CHS gene to …
