Working With Gender Nonconforming Children : Why Does The Debate Continue?, Gillian A. Harvey Jan 2014

Working With Gender Nonconforming Children : Why Does The Debate Continue?, Gillian A. Harvey

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This original empirical study explored why consensus about best practice models for working with gender nonconforming children and their families has not been reached, and identified practice frameworks available to assist clinical social workers in meeting the social and emotional needs of this vulnerable population. The experience and perspectives of 14 Canadian gender identity experts were elicited through self-developed, semi-structured interviews composed of questions that encouraged professionals to reflect on their opinion as to why the debate about how to best respond continues, as well as, their philosophical and theoretical approach to caring for gender nonconforming children and their families. …

The Increasing Weight Of Regulation: Countries Combat The Global Obesity Epidemic, Allyn L. Taylor, Emily W. Parento, Laura A. Schmidt Jan 2014

The Increasing Weight Of Regulation: Countries Combat The Global Obesity Epidemic, Allyn L. Taylor, Emily W. Parento, Laura A. Schmidt

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Obesity is a global epidemic, exacting an enormous human and economic toll. In the absence of a comprehensive global governance strategy, states have increasingly employed a wide array of legal strategies targeting the drivers of obesity. This article identifies recent global trends in obesity-related legislation and makes the normative case for an updated global governance strategy.

National governments have responded to the epidemic both by strengthening traditional interventions and by developing novel legislative strategies. This response consists of nine important trends: (1) strengthened and tailored tax measures; (2) broader use of counter-advertising and health campaigns; (3) expanded food labeling; (4) …

Cura Personalis: Some Ignatian Inspirations, Fr. Barton T. Geger S.J. Jan 2014

Cura Personalis: Some Ignatian Inspirations, Fr. Barton T. Geger S.J.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Cura personalis is an expression of recent vintage, but the three meanings most commonly given to it have deep roots in the spirituality and lived experience of St. Ignatius. An awareness of the latter can shed light upon the organic unity of Ignatian spirituality as a whole and help to regulate proper usage of the term.

Postcolonial Elements In Early English Poetry, Mohamed Kamel Abdel-Daem Jan 2014

Postcolonial Elements In Early English Poetry, Mohamed Kamel Abdel-Daem

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In this article, the writer highlights certain elements in Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman verse, that can unsurprisingly be a precursor of postcolonial writing. These marks are: heroic spirit, religious devotion, chivalric pride and elegiac vein. All these topics were nothing but aids to the early English poets' attempt to coin a unified English identity. This study manifestly assumes that nineteenth and twentieth century, imperial England had once been a colonized nation that produced postcolonial culture and literature. This article proposes that postcolonialism is not restricted just to modern times; postcolonial literature often emerged where conflicts occurred. The study also hints at …

Model-Based 3-D Reconstruction Of Transparent Objects From A Single Image, Wiehrs Lewis Collier Jan 2014

Model-Based 3-D Reconstruction Of Transparent Objects From A Single Image, Wiehrs Lewis Collier

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation describes an interdisciplinary research project that spans computer-vision, imaging of biological nanoparticles via cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-tem), and bio-informatics / proteomics. This research introduces a new method for reconstructing individual biological particles imaged via cryo-tem with typical accuracies of 88% to 98%. This individual particle reconstruction (IPR) technique is based on a hidden Markov model derived from the underlying biological structure. The processing presented in this dissertation reconstructs each individual particle from a single image, which is in contrast to current approaches that can require tens of thousands of images to create an ensemble representation …

Characterization Of The Probiotic Mechanism Of Phaeobacter Gallaeciensis S4 Against Bacterial Pathogens, Wenjing Zhao Jan 2014

Characterization Of The Probiotic Mechanism Of Phaeobacter Gallaeciensis S4 Against Bacterial Pathogens, Wenjing Zhao

Open Access Dissertations

Infections by pathogenic marine bacteria are a major problem for both the shellfish and finfish aquaculture industries, causing severe disease and high mortality, which seriously affect aquaculture production and cause significant economic loss. Marine pathogens like Vibrio tubiashii and Roseovarius crassostreae frequently cause disease in a variety of shellfish. With the understanding that the use of antibiotics in large-scale aquaculture leads to the development and transfer of antibiotic resistance, investigation of probiotic approaches for the prevention of infectious disease has become important. In manuscript I, screening of bacterial isolates from Rhode Island marine organisms and environment using agar-based assay methods …

Barriers To Obstetric Fistula Treatment In Low-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Benjamin Bellows, Rachel Bach, Zoe Baker, Charlotte E. Warren Jan 2014

Barriers To Obstetric Fistula Treatment In Low-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Benjamin Bellows, Rachel Bach, Zoe Baker, Charlotte E. Warren

Reproductive Health

Obstetric fistula is a maternal morbidity condition that occurs in some low-income countries and is caused by prolonged obstructed labor that results in a hole between the vagina and the bladder or rectum through which urine or feces leak. Unrepaired fistula can lead to lifelong ostracism, stigma, and shame. Obstetric fistula is preventable and treatable, but women in these countries experience delays in seeking repair due to a number of factors including awareness of their condition as well as the potential for treatment, resources necessary for seeking care, lack of skilled fistula surgeons, and long hospital waiting times. UNFPA estimates …

Induced Abortions And Unintended Pregnancies In Pakistan, 2012, Population Council Jan 2014

Induced Abortions And Unintended Pregnancies In Pakistan, 2012, Population Council

Reproductive Health

The 2012–13 PDHS (Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey) shows that gains in contraceptive prevalence over the past decade have been small, and unmet need has remained high. Using data from a 2012 national study on post-abortion care, we estimate 2.2 million abortions occurred in Pakistan in 2012, and an annual abortion rate of 50 per 1,000 women. A previous study estimated an abortion rate of 27 for 2002. Even accounting for an underestimation of abortion incidence (private sector abortion services could not be included) in the prior study, the abortion rate in Pakistan has likely increased substantially between 2002 and …

Norwegian People's Aid Humanitarian Disarmament Strategy, Npa Jan 2014

Norwegian People's Aid Humanitarian Disarmament Strategy, Npa

Global CWD Repository

Beginning in 1992, Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) has implemented mine action programmes in more than 40 states and territories. The strategy presented here builds on our experience, accomplishments, and lessons learned. It identifies new directions and priorities, and expands our work from mine action to broader areas of humanitarian disarmament. By ‘humanitarian disarmament’ we mean all operations and advocacy which aim to reduce and prevent harm to civilians from the impacts of weapons and ammunition. It is disarmament motivated and guided by humanitarian and development imperatives, rather than strategic national interests and international stability, and where civil society plays a …

Report On The Field Test Of The Nvesd-Developed Underwater Explosives Sensor “Hammerhead” At Ordnance Reef, Hawaii, Marc D. Woodka

Global CWD Repository

The Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) has recently developed a sensor system, named “Hammerhead,” capable of discriminating between explosives and explosive-related compounds in water at concentrations of 10-100 parts per trillion. The sensor discriminates between different compounds using a biologically inspired fluorescent polymer sensor array, which responds with a unique fluorescence quenching pattern during exposure to various explosives.1 The sensor achieves sensitivities of 10-100 parts per trillion by employing a preconcentrator upstream of the sensor inlet, which traps explosives from water flowing over it, then releases the explosives at elevated concentrations during thermal desorption. NVESD recently packaged this …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A small library of new azomethine derivatives of 3-aryl-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones was synthesized. The key intermediates 2-thioxo-quinazolinones (3a--e), obtained in 2 steps from the corresponding anilines, were treated with methyl chloroacetate to afford S-substituted esters (4a,d), which were then converted into corresponding acetohydrazides (5a,d). Further, acetohydrazide (5d) was converted to the azomethines derivatives (6a--k) by reacting with a number of suitably substituted benzaldehydes. FTIR, ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, GC-MS, and elemental analyses were used to confirm the assigned structures of the synthesized compounds. Further, compounds 3a, 5, and 6j were also confirmed by X-ray diffraction data.

Synthesis Of New Pyrazole And Antibacterial Pyrazolopyrimidine Derivatives, Ameur Rahmouni, Anis Romdhane, Abderrahim Ben Said, Kaouther Majouli, Hichem Ben Jannet

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

3-Substituted-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-amines 2a--c were synthesized by treating 5-aminopyrazole-4-carbonitriles 1a--c with formamide. The reactivity of compounds 1a--c towards some cyclic anhydrides was studied. The condensation of 5-aminopyrazole-4-carbonitrile 1b with triethylorthoformate gives imidate 7b, which reacts with a series of primary amines and leads to pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine-4-amines 9 and 10. The reaction of imidate 7b with ammonia and hydroxylamine afforded pyrazolopyrimidine 2b and pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-5-(4H)-ol 11, respectively. The synthesized compounds were completely characterized by ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, IR, and HRMS. The antibacterial activity of some new synthesized compounds was evaluated and appeared to be significant.

Alcohol Use, Misuse, And Abuse Among Nursing Students: A Photovoice Study, Julie Mcculloh Nair Jan 2014

Alcohol Use, Misuse, And Abuse Among Nursing Students: A Photovoice Study, Julie Mcculloh Nair

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Existing knowledge about alcohol misuse and abuse and nursing students is founded upon studies conducted primarily in the 1980's and 1990's, thus raising questions as to its relevance in 2014. The patterns of alcohol use and other substances over the past 30 years by students raise several questions concerning this phenomenon, which needs further explanation beyond just the high stress and demands of nursing education. The literature was examined first to identify existing knowledge on alcohol misuse and abuse among nursing students. From this review, we concluded that policy plays a vital role in this issue. Therefore, we next reviewed …

Serotonergic Stimulation Of Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Their Cheminformatic Models, Richard Edwin Trager Iii Jan 2014

Serotonergic Stimulation Of Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Their Cheminformatic Models, Richard Edwin Trager Iii

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Kidney disease and toxicity is increasingly being tied to mitochondrial dysfunction. Cheminformatic modeling and high-throughput phenotypic screens can discover discrete subsets of selective ligands that correlate with mitochondrial biogenesis (MB) and accelerate recovery from acute kidney injury (AKI). Serotonergic (5-HT) stimulation has been shown to cause MB. Subtype specific ligands for 5-HT1F and 5-HTA/C receptors show increased uncoupled oxygen consumption rate (OCR). Our overall goal, in a screening assay, is to discover small molecules that increase MB to be used as drugs in the treatment of diseases that exhibit mitochondrial dysfunction. To achieve this goal we created pharmacophore models of …

Shifty Salamanders: Transient Trophic Polymorphism And Cannibalism Within Natural Populations Of Larval Ambystomatid Salamanders, D. M. Jefferson, M. Ferrari, S. Alicia Mathis, K. Hobson, Eric R. Britzke, Adam L. Crane, Andrew R. Blaustein, Douglas P. Chivers

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Many species of ambystomatid salamanders are dependent upon highly variable temporary wetlands for larval development. High larval densities may prompt the expression of a distinct head morphology that may facilitate cannibalism. However, few studies have characterized structural cannibalism within natural populations of larval salamanders. In this study we used two species of larval salamanders, long-toed (Ambystoma macrodactylum) and ringed salamanders (A. annulatum). Head morphometrics and stable isotopic values of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) were used to identify the presence or absence of structural cannibalism. Weather conditions were also analyzed as a potential factor associated with the expression of cannibalistic …

Winter Energetics Of Female Indiana Bats Myotis Sodalis, K. M. Day, Thomas Tomasi Jan 2014

Winter Energetics Of Female Indiana Bats Myotis Sodalis, K. M. Day, Thomas Tomasi

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Understanding physiological limits and environmental optima is critical to developing protection strategies for endangered and threatened species. One theory to explain the decline in endangered Indiana bat Myotis sodalis populations involves increasing cave temperatures in winter hibernacula. Altered cave temperatures can raise metabolism and cause more arousals in torpid bats, both of which use more fat reserves. In addition, fluctuations in cave temperatures may cause additional arousals. Our objectives were to quantify the effect of temperature and fluctuations thereof on torpid metabolism and arousal frequency in this species. Female Indiana bats (n=36) were collected from caves just before hibernation, maintained …

Temporal Transcriptional Regulation Of Il-10-Induced Anti-Inflammatory Genes In Lps-Triggered Macrophages, A. F. Dillow, L. N. Cardwell, T. J. Smith, B. D. Groppe, B. A. Peterson, M. A. Sickman, Brian K. Weaver

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) mediates an anti-inflammatory response that is executed through the expression of IL-10-induced genes. Certain IL-10-induced genes, exemplified by TNIP3, are induced by IL-10 only in conjunction with a pro-inflammatory signal. We sought to characterize the mechanism whereby IL-10 and Toll-like receptor signals synergized to induce expression of genes like TNIP 3 in macrophages. Stimulation with IL-10 and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) synergistically induced an increase in the transcription rate of TNIP3, while having no effect on its mRNA stability. This transcriptional mechanism proved to be generalizable to 14 other genes that also were synergistically induced by IL-10 and LPS in …

Dual-Specificity Phosphatase-1 Regulates The Inflammatory Milieu In Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Xiaoyi Zhang

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Head and neck cancer accounts for approximately 6% of diagnosed malignancies in the United States, with an estimated 35,000 incidences and over 7,000 deaths every year. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) comprises the majority of head and neck cancers, with a worldwide incidence of more than 500,000 cases. Head and neck cancer patients often present in advanced stages of disease, and despite ongoing research, survival rates remain lower than other more common malignancies. Cytokines and pro-inflammatory factors have been shown to have a critical role in the various steps of malignant transformation, including tumor growth, survival, invasion, angiogenesis, …

Neurosciences

Schistosomiasis affects over 200 million people worldwide. Involvement of the CNS is a rare occurrence. We report 2 young males who presented with rapidly progressing paraparesis associated with urinary incontinence. In both cases, MRI of the spine demonstrated a diffusely enhancing mass at the conus medullaris with extensive spinal cord edema. Laboratory investigations revealed mild peripheral eosinophilia and abnormal, but non-specific, CSF analysis. In one patient, the diagnosis was made based on a rising schistosomal titer with a positive rectal biopsy. In the other patient, spinal cord biopsy revealed a granuloma. Both cases were caused by Schistosoma mansoni and patients …
