Trauma, Criminalization, And Movements For Healing Justice : A Theoretical Study Of Relational Theory And Transformative Justice Interventions In The Treatment Of Juvenile Sexual Offending, Megan E. Shaughnessy-Mogill
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical thesis explores the etiology and treatment of juvenile sexual offenders from the perspectives of psychoanalytic relational theory and the emerging grassroots theory of transformative justice, drawing together the often-disconnected spheres of the individual and the systemic in the study and treatment of child sexual abuse. This study traces the concepts of dissociation and reenactment to examine the role of unconscious traumatogenic phenomena and the apparent parallel process across the individual and systemic dimensions of juvenile sexual offending. Engaging two theories from outside the mainstream treatment model, this study asks what clinical understandings and treatment possibilities may be foreclosed …

Alveolar Epithelial Type Ii Cell Metabolism In Health, Hypoxia And Disease, Robyn Grayson Lottes
Alveolar Epithelial Type Ii Cell Metabolism In Health, Hypoxia And Disease, Robyn Grayson Lottes
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Alveolar epithelial type II (ATII) cells constitute 50% of cells composing the alveolar epithelium and are essential to proper lung function. They are the primary producers of pulmonary surfactant, serve as progenitors capable of rapid self-renewal and differentiation, and play roles in immunity and fluid homeostasis, all of which require considerable energy investment. Given their many ATP-demanding functions, ATII cells are expected to be highly metabolically active; however, little is known about the fundamental metabolism of this critical cell type. ATII cells are normally exposed to uniquely high oxygen concentrations. However, numerous lung diseases including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) lead …

Who Does What? : Navigating Gender Roles In Early Parenthood, Annabel L. Lane
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explores gender role dynamics between couples in early years of parenthood. Forty-nine individuals in heterosexual couple relationships participated in phone interviews where they described their experiences making decisions and resolving conflict with their partners about the division of family labor. The families in this study had participated in the Supporting Father Involvement Project in Alberta, Canada. Findings of this study confirm existing research that gender roles become more traditional among heterosexual couples after parenthood, with mothers carrying out the majority of household tasks. Participants described a complex and challenging set of internal and external factors that were …

The Adaptation Of Trauma Therapies For Use With Children And Adolescents Diagnosed On The Autism Spectrum : A Qualitative Study, Benjamin A. Katz
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study was undertaken to explore the issue of the treatment of trauma in children and adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. Specifically this study sought to explore two specific questions: are there any specific modalities of treatment that are best suited for treating trauma in children and adolescents with a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum, and are there any patterns in the kinds of adaptations to treatment that need to be made to make treatment effective across different kinds of therapeutic interventions? Using semi-structured interviews with seven licensed clinicians who have treated trauma in children and adolescents …
Beyond Machismo : A Theoretical Exploration Of Domestic Violence In Latino Men, Daniela Sanchez
Beyond Machismo : A Theoretical Exploration Of Domestic Violence In Latino Men, Daniela Sanchez
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical thesis explores psychodynamic explanations for differing rates of domestic violence (DV) between Latino men born in the U.S. and Latino men who immigrated to the U.S. This study specifically focuses on DV in the form of intimate terrorism. Critical race theory and Klein's object relations theory are applied to Dr. Christauria G. Welland's case of Lorenzo to demonstrate how racism influences internal and interpersonal dynamics in DV relationships. The author encourages social workers to apply critical race theory to traditional psychodynamic theories for a more comprehensive case formulation, especially when working with Latino clients involved in a DV …

The Increasing Weight Of Regulation: Countries Combat The Global Obesity Epidemic, Allyn L. Taylor, Emily W. Parento, Laura A. Schmidt
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Obesity is a global epidemic, exacting an enormous human and economic toll. In the absence of a comprehensive global governance strategy, states have increasingly employed a wide array of legal strategies targeting the drivers of obesity. This article identifies recent global trends in obesity-related legislation and makes the normative case for an updated global governance strategy.
National governments have responded to the epidemic both by strengthening traditional interventions and by developing novel legislative strategies. This response consists of nine important trends: (1) strengthened and tailored tax measures; (2) broader use of counter-advertising and health campaigns; (3) expanded food labeling; (4) …

Cura Personalis: Some Ignatian Inspirations, Fr. Barton T. Geger S.J.
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Cura personalis is an expression of recent vintage, but the three meanings most commonly given to it have deep roots in the spirituality and lived experience of St. Ignatius. An awareness of the latter can shed light upon the organic unity of Ignatian spirituality as a whole and help to regulate proper usage of the term.
Postcolonial Elements In Early English Poetry, Mohamed Kamel Abdel-Daem
Postcolonial Elements In Early English Poetry, Mohamed Kamel Abdel-Daem
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
In this article, the writer highlights certain elements in Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman verse, that can unsurprisingly be a precursor of postcolonial writing. These marks are: heroic spirit, religious devotion, chivalric pride and elegiac vein. All these topics were nothing but aids to the early English poets' attempt to coin a unified English identity. This study manifestly assumes that nineteenth and twentieth century, imperial England had once been a colonized nation that produced postcolonial culture and literature. This article proposes that postcolonialism is not restricted just to modern times; postcolonial literature often emerged where conflicts occurred. The study also hints at …

Model-Based 3-D Reconstruction Of Transparent Objects From A Single Image, Wiehrs Lewis Collier
Model-Based 3-D Reconstruction Of Transparent Objects From A Single Image, Wiehrs Lewis Collier
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation describes an interdisciplinary research project that spans computer-vision, imaging of biological nanoparticles via cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-tem), and bio-informatics / proteomics. This research introduces a new method for reconstructing individual biological particles imaged via cryo-tem with typical accuracies of 88% to 98%. This individual particle reconstruction (IPR) technique is based on a hidden Markov model derived from the underlying biological structure. The processing presented in this dissertation reconstructs each individual particle from a single image, which is in contrast to current approaches that can require tens of thousands of images to create an ensemble representation …
Characterization Of The Probiotic Mechanism Of Phaeobacter Gallaeciensis S4 Against Bacterial Pathogens, Wenjing Zhao
Characterization Of The Probiotic Mechanism Of Phaeobacter Gallaeciensis S4 Against Bacterial Pathogens, Wenjing Zhao
Open Access Dissertations
Infections by pathogenic marine bacteria are a major problem for both the shellfish and finfish aquaculture industries, causing severe disease and high mortality, which seriously affect aquaculture production and cause significant economic loss. Marine pathogens like Vibrio tubiashii and Roseovarius crassostreae frequently cause disease in a variety of shellfish. With the understanding that the use of antibiotics in large-scale aquaculture leads to the development and transfer of antibiotic resistance, investigation of probiotic approaches for the prevention of infectious disease has become important. In manuscript I, screening of bacterial isolates from Rhode Island marine organisms and environment using agar-based assay methods …

Barriers To Obstetric Fistula Treatment In Low-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Benjamin Bellows, Rachel Bach, Zoe Baker, Charlotte E. Warren
Reproductive Health
Obstetric fistula is a maternal morbidity condition that occurs in some low-income countries and is caused by prolonged obstructed labor that results in a hole between the vagina and the bladder or rectum through which urine or feces leak. Unrepaired fistula can lead to lifelong ostracism, stigma, and shame. Obstetric fistula is preventable and treatable, but women in these countries experience delays in seeking repair due to a number of factors including awareness of their condition as well as the potential for treatment, resources necessary for seeking care, lack of skilled fistula surgeons, and long hospital waiting times. UNFPA estimates …

Induced Abortions And Unintended Pregnancies In Pakistan, 2012, Population Council
Reproductive Health
The 2012–13 PDHS (Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey) shows that gains in contraceptive prevalence over the past decade have been small, and unmet need has remained high. Using data from a 2012 national study on post-abortion care, we estimate 2.2 million abortions occurred in Pakistan in 2012, and an annual abortion rate of 50 per 1,000 women. A previous study estimated an abortion rate of 27 for 2002. Even accounting for an underestimation of abortion incidence (private sector abortion services could not be included) in the prior study, the abortion rate in Pakistan has likely increased substantially between 2002 and …

Norwegian People's Aid Humanitarian Disarmament Strategy, Npa
Norwegian People's Aid Humanitarian Disarmament Strategy, Npa
Global CWD Repository
Beginning in 1992, Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) has implemented mine action programmes in more than 40 states and territories. The strategy presented here builds on our experience, accomplishments, and lessons learned. It identifies new directions and priorities, and expands our work from mine action to broader areas of humanitarian disarmament. By ‘humanitarian disarmament’ we mean all operations and advocacy which aim to reduce and prevent harm to civilians from the impacts of weapons and ammunition. It is disarmament motivated and guided by humanitarian and development imperatives, rather than strategic national interests and international stability, and where civil society plays a …

Report On The Field Test Of The Nvesd-Developed Underwater Explosives Sensor “Hammerhead” At Ordnance Reef, Hawaii, Marc D. Woodka
Global CWD Repository
The Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) has recently developed a sensor system, named “Hammerhead,” capable of discriminating between explosives and explosive-related compounds in water at concentrations of 10-100 parts per trillion. The sensor discriminates between different compounds using a biologically inspired fluorescent polymer sensor array, which responds with a unique fluorescence quenching pattern during exposure to various explosives.1 The sensor achieves sensitivities of 10-100 parts per trillion by employing a preconcentrator upstream of the sensor inlet, which traps explosives from water flowing over it, then releases the explosives at elevated concentrations during thermal desorption. NVESD recently packaged this …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A small library of new azomethine derivatives of 3-aryl-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones was synthesized. The key intermediates 2-thioxo-quinazolinones (3a--e), obtained in 2 steps from the corresponding anilines, were treated with methyl chloroacetate to afford S-substituted esters (4a,d), which were then converted into corresponding acetohydrazides (5a,d). Further, acetohydrazide (5d) was converted to the azomethines derivatives (6a--k) by reacting with a number of suitably substituted benzaldehydes. FTIR, ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, GC-MS, and elemental analyses were used to confirm the assigned structures of the synthesized compounds. Further, compounds 3a, 5, and 6j were also confirmed by X-ray diffraction data.

3-Substituted-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-amines 2a--c were synthesized by treating 5-aminopyrazole-4-carbonitriles 1a--c with formamide. The reactivity of compounds 1a--c towards some cyclic anhydrides was studied. The condensation of 5-aminopyrazole-4-carbonitrile 1b with triethylorthoformate gives imidate 7b, which reacts with a series of primary amines and leads to pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine-4-amines 9 and 10. The reaction of imidate 7b with ammonia and hydroxylamine afforded pyrazolopyrimidine 2b and pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-5-(4H)-ol 11, respectively. The synthesized compounds were completely characterized by ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, IR, and HRMS. The antibacterial activity of some new synthesized compounds was evaluated and appeared to be significant.
Alcohol Use, Misuse, And Abuse Among Nursing Students: A Photovoice Study, Julie Mcculloh Nair
Alcohol Use, Misuse, And Abuse Among Nursing Students: A Photovoice Study, Julie Mcculloh Nair
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Existing knowledge about alcohol misuse and abuse and nursing students is founded upon studies conducted primarily in the 1980's and 1990's, thus raising questions as to its relevance in 2014. The patterns of alcohol use and other substances over the past 30 years by students raise several questions concerning this phenomenon, which needs further explanation beyond just the high stress and demands of nursing education. The literature was examined first to identify existing knowledge on alcohol misuse and abuse among nursing students. From this review, we concluded that policy plays a vital role in this issue. Therefore, we next reviewed …
