Memory Self-Efficacy And Beliefs About Memory Controllability In Late Life, Bethany A. Lyon
Memory Self-Efficacy And Beliefs About Memory Controllability In Late Life, Bethany A. Lyon
LSU Master's Theses
The Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) model for lifespan development (Baltes & Baltes, 1990) holds that as we age, our goals change from growth to maintenance. When people face difficulties, they work to minimize losses in order to maintain skills they already have physically, mentally, and socially. Thus, we compensate when possible in order to maintain the life we have established. In the case of memory people assume that there is little they can do when memory starts to fail and forgetfulness becomes more prominent. In the present research, we examine memory self-appraisals to provide new evidence on memory self-efficacy …
Cdom Optical Properties Near Dwh Site, Gulf Of Mexico: Pot Oil Spill, Zhi Li
Cdom Optical Properties Near Dwh Site, Gulf Of Mexico: Pot Oil Spill, Zhi Li
LSU Master's Theses
The Deep Water Horizon (DWH) oil spill resulted in the largest accidental release of crude oil in U.S. waters with both short- and long-term effects on the marine environment. Extensive studies conducted immediately following the oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico provided greater understanding of the physical processes influencing the distribution of the released oil, including the use of optical detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a toxic crude oil fraction in the northern Gulf of Mexico. In this study, the optical properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were …

Assessment Of Age At Weaning For Post-Contact Maya Of Tipu, Belize, Using Stable Carbon, Nitrogen, And Oxygen Isotope Ratios, Chaney Hiers
LSU Master's Theses
Age at weaning was assessed for a post-Spanish contact Maya population, the Tipu, by sampling 25 individuals (20 subadults less than seven years of age and five females from 18 to 45 years of age). Whole ribs, for younger subadults, and rib fragments, for older subadults and adults, were sampled for stable nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen isotope ratios. Five lines of evidence were used to assess age at weaning: stable carbon composition from collagen (δ13Ccol), stable nitrogen composition from collagen (δ15Ncol), stable carbon composition from apatite (δ13Cap), difference in collagen and apatite composition (Δ13Cap-col), and stable oxygen composition from apatite …
Evaluation Of Stromatolites From The 3.4 Ga Kromberg Formation, Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa, Corey E. Shircliff
Evaluation Of Stromatolites From The 3.4 Ga Kromberg Formation, Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa, Corey E. Shircliff
LSU Master's Theses
Silicified sedimentary rocks from the 3.4 Ga Kromberg Formation of the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa contain laminated structures that have been identified as possible stromatolites in the field. Morphological evaluation and a variety of chemical analyses are presented here, in an effort to describe the samples in a sedimentary context and consider biogenicity of these laminated forms. Two major types of laminated structures were identified in the field – domical laminates and flat-laminated samples with little to no synoptic relief. The domical sample presents the best morphological evidence for biogenicity. There are several characteristics that suggest the deposition …
The Adoption Of State Wetland Policies: How Do Wetlands Fit Within The Theoretical Framework Of Environmental Policy Determinants?, Rachel Bogart Krech
The Adoption Of State Wetland Policies: How Do Wetlands Fit Within The Theoretical Framework Of Environmental Policy Determinants?, Rachel Bogart Krech
LSU Master's Theses
Wetlands are an extremely important natural resource in the United States. They offer storm surge protection, sediment stabilization, groundwater recharging, carbon sequestration, and habitat for many species. Despite their values, wetlands have a long history of being misunderstood. It was not until the mid-1970s that scientific understanding helped transform policy from that of rapid conversion to that of conservation. By this time, the lower 48 states had already lost 53 percent of its total wetlands. The nature of wetlands and federal limitations make the management of this natural resource a primarily state-based responsibility. However, the way that states construct their …
A Diagnosis Feature Space For Condition Monitoring And Fault Diagnosis Of Ball Bearings, Ali Kahirdeh
A Diagnosis Feature Space For Condition Monitoring And Fault Diagnosis Of Ball Bearings, Ali Kahirdeh
LSU Master's Theses
The problem of fault diagnosis and condition monitoring of ball bearings is a multidisciplinary subject. It involves research subjects from diverse disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and in particular signal processing. In the first step, one should identify the correct method of investigation. The methods of investigation for condition monitoring of ball bearings include acoustic emission measurements, temperature monitoring, electrical current monitoring, debris analysis and vibration signal analysis. In this thesis the vibration signal analysis is employed. Once the method of analysis is selected, then features sensitive to faults should be calculated from the signal. While some of the …
Quantifying The Impact Of Hurricanes, Mid-Latitude Cyclones And Other Weather And Climate Extreme Events On The Mississippi-Alabama Barrier Islands Using Remotely Sensed Data, Rebekah Danielle Jones
Quantifying The Impact Of Hurricanes, Mid-Latitude Cyclones And Other Weather And Climate Extreme Events On The Mississippi-Alabama Barrier Islands Using Remotely Sensed Data, Rebekah Danielle Jones
LSU Master's Theses
Recent high-profile hurricanes have demonstrated the destructiveness of extreme events on coastal landscapes to the world. Barrier islands across the planet are disappearing, exposing vulnerable coastal cities to the damage caused by extreme events. Growing resolve among scientists regarding climate change's connection to tropical cyclones heightens the concern around intensifying extremes and landscape dynamics. This study uses more than 600 Landsat images to examine the role of extreme events on barrier island morphology on four of the Mississippi-Alabama barrier islands from 1972-2014. Each island, West Ship Island (WSI), East Ship Island (WSI), Petit Bois Island (PBI), and Sand Island, was …
Assessment Of Habitat Quality For Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus, In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico: Natural Vs. Artificial Reefs, Brittany Dawn Schwartzkopf
Assessment Of Habitat Quality For Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus, In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico: Natural Vs. Artificial Reefs, Brittany Dawn Schwartzkopf
LSU Master's Theses
Habitat quality of natural and artificial reefs for red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) is important as this area is home to the majority of the Gulf’s artificial reef system, in the form of oil and gas platforms, in addition to the largest extent of high vertical relief natural habitat. This study sought to assess habitat quality of natural reefs of varying habitat complexity and an artificial reef complex located on the LA continental shelf. Habitat quality was assessed by comparing red snapper diets and foraging patterns, and nutritional condition using the liver-somatic index (LSI) …

Growth And Mortality Of Spat, Seed, And Market-Sized Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) In Low Salinities And High Temperatures, Molly Marie Rybovich
Growth And Mortality Of Spat, Seed, And Market-Sized Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) In Low Salinities And High Temperatures, Molly Marie Rybovich
LSU Master's Theses
Changes in the timing and interaction of seasonal high temperatures and low salinity as predicted by climate change models could dramatically alter oyster population dynamics. Little is known explicitly about how low salinity and high temperature combinations affect spat (<25 mm), seed (26-75 mm), and market (>75 mm) oyster growth and mortality. Using lab and field studies, this project quantified the combined effects of extremely low salinities (< 5) and high temperatures (>30 oC) on growth and survival of spat, seed, and market-sized oysters. In 2012 and 2013, hatchery-produced oysters were placed in open and closed bags at three sites in Breton Sound, LA, along a salinity gradient which typically …25>
Antioxidant Activities And Phenolic Acids In Different Raw And Boiled Potatoes And Sweet Potatoes, Ya Gao
Antioxidant Activities And Phenolic Acids In Different Raw And Boiled Potatoes And Sweet Potatoes, Ya Gao
LSU Master's Theses
Antioxidants have attracted great interests from food industries and scientists in recent years, because they have the capacity to reduce the harmful oxidation reaction in human body. Phenolic compounds are the common antioxidants that are widely found in fruits and vegetables. In this study, three varieties of potatoes and four varieties of sweet potatoes were used to examine the profiles and contents of phenolics in the raw and boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes. The Red Garnet Sweet Potato (RGSP) was the richest in phenolic content and selected to study the changes of free phenolics, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity …
Oxygen Isotope Composition Of Phosphate Along Vertical Weathering Profiles That Developed On Igneous Rocks: Testing Modern Analogues For Identifying Terrestrial Life In Ancient Paleosols, Dustin Warn Boyd
LSU Master's Theses
Life on Earth began in its early oceans before moving on to land. Determining the exact timing of an established biosphere on land, however, has been elusive, due largely to the lack of either fossil or chemical evidence on land deposits. Here I test a hypothesis that the activity of land biota can be recorded in the oxygen isotope composition of phosphate in weathering profiles developed on igneous parent rocks. Igneous rock contains phosphate (PO43-), which is readily utilized for biological activities during soil development. The oxygen in PO43- does not readily exchange its oxygen …
Oyster Spat Survival In Response To Hydrocarbon Contamination And Predation In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Maria Louise Vozzo
Oyster Spat Survival In Response To Hydrocarbon Contamination And Predation In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Maria Louise Vozzo
LSU Master's Theses
Barataria Bay, in southeast Louisiana is home to productive oyster reefs that are both ecologically and economically important, but was threatened by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010. This study was designed to determine how the oil spill affected long- and short-term oyster recruitment, and spat (juvenile oysters) cellular health. I also investigated how predators in the bay affect spat survival. Four study sites were selected in Barataria Bay: two control and two oiled, each with a low and high salinity location. To determine whether there were long-term effects of the oil spill on oyster recruitment, tiles were …
Everything Is Alright: Parental Positive Impression Management In Assessment Of Anxious Youth, Megan Elizabeth Kirkpatrick
Everything Is Alright: Parental Positive Impression Management In Assessment Of Anxious Youth, Megan Elizabeth Kirkpatrick
LSU Master's Theses
Lifetime prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in youth are substantial and range from 6-15%. Valid evidence-based assessments are therefore of critical importance in screening pediatric clients. Assessment of childhood disorders requires multi-informant data (e.g., parents, teachers, child); however, this presents a host of obstacles not found in adult assessment. No single source represents the gold standard and it is therefore up to the judgment of the clinician to integrate often conflicting information. Parents’ reports of their children's symptomology may be marred by their own anxious or depressive symptoms as well as conflict due to differing motivations, values, and goals. This …
Adopting Star Plot For Visualization Of High Dimensional Multivariate Data, Shabana Sangli
Adopting Star Plot For Visualization Of High Dimensional Multivariate Data, Shabana Sangli
LSU Master's Theses
The Star Plot is one of popular methods for visualization of multivariate data. This method displays each data record as a star-shaped icon by mapping all variables (dimensions) on radiating rays (axes) originated from a single point. The number of such icons is equal to the number of data items (records). As the number of dimensions and the size of data set increase, Star Plot visualization soon becomes too cluttered because many rays have to be accommodated within small circular area and individual icons also become too small. To overcome these problems associated with visualization of high-dimensional multivariate data, we …
Effect Of The Bp Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Critical Marsh Soil Microbial Functions, Jason Paul Pietroski
Effect Of The Bp Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Critical Marsh Soil Microbial Functions, Jason Paul Pietroski
LSU Master's Theses
On April 20, 2010, the BP Deepwater Horizon (DWH) offshore oil platform exploded releasing ~ 795 million L of southern Louisiana (LA) light sweet crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Approximately 7.9 million liters of dispersant, Corexit EC9500A, were applied for remediation. The effect of BP DWH crude oil and Corexit EC9500A on two marsh soil microbial processes, (mineralizable nitrogen and denitrification), were examined in the laboratory. Surface soil samples were collected from an unimpacted salt marsh site proximal to areas that suffered light to heavily oiling in Barataria Bay, LA. Additions of oil were at a ratio of …
Comparison Of Land Building By Mississippi River Diversion Using One And Two Dimensional Numerical Models, Gyan Prasad Basyal
Comparison Of Land Building By Mississippi River Diversion Using One And Two Dimensional Numerical Models, Gyan Prasad Basyal
LSU Master's Theses
River sediment diversions have been identified as one strategy for creating new land and offsetting Mississippi River delta plain land loss. Numerical modeling is one tool for estimating the amount of land, geomorphic features and ecological benefits from diversions. There are a number of models proposed to estimate sediment diversion land building, ranging from simplistic approaches that provide bulk characteristics and use little computational resources to process-based models that require a large amount of input parameters and computing power. This thesis aims to compare and contrast two approaches to simulating the land building processes in a simplified receiving basin: a …
Adapting Resilience To A New Hazard: Oil And Oysters In Coastal Louisiana, Audrey Maass
Adapting Resilience To A New Hazard: Oil And Oysters In Coastal Louisiana, Audrey Maass
LSU Master's Theses
Inherently resilient practices are one mechanism that communities engage in to cope with disruptive events. A community retains and passes down the practices associated with inherent resilience in their collective memory. The inherent resilience of a community is developed over time, yet the explanation provided by Colten et al. lacks a genesis of how this process developed particularly in relation to the oil industry’s entry into Louisiana. The foundations of these practices will be explored through historic court documents to find encounters between oystermen and oil spills. In addition to legal resources, I also investigate newspaper articles and other historic …
Natural Isoscapes Of Louisiana: Stable Isotope Analysis Of Oxygen, Carbon, And Strontium, Miley Jackson
Natural Isoscapes Of Louisiana: Stable Isotope Analysis Of Oxygen, Carbon, And Strontium, Miley Jackson
LSU Master's Theses
Stable isotope analysis has been used by archaeologists and anthropologists to better understand time, provenience, and diet of past humans, but the utility of stable isotope analysis in modern humans has not been fully explored. Forensic anthropologists today primarily identify human skeletal remains, and stable isotope analysis of bone may narrow down the possible identities of an individual. Determining the natural variability within the state of Louisiana is the first step in determining whether individuals from different areas of the state are distinguishable from one another. This thesis investigated the natural isotopic variability in Louisiana with respect to oxygen (δ18O), …
Inferences Of Subsistence Activities Using Musculoskeletal Stress Markers Of Humerii From Two Louisiana Archaeological Populations, Brian M. Thibodeaux
Inferences Of Subsistence Activities Using Musculoskeletal Stress Markers Of Humerii From Two Louisiana Archaeological Populations, Brian M. Thibodeaux
LSU Master's Theses
Wolff’s Law states that bone is laid down where it is needed; therefore, mechanical factors, including subsistence-based activity patterns, play a role in bone biology. One of bone’s responses to strain is the development of musculoskeletal stress markers (MSMs) at entheses, or the sites in which soft tissues, including tendons and ligaments, attach to bone. MSMs have been used by bioarchaeologists to make inferences about past population’s activity patterns and subsistence behaviors. The following study scores eight MSMs of the proximal humerii from the Tchefuncte (16ST1) and Greenhouse (16AV2) sites in Louisiana. The MSMs were segregated into muscle groups and …
Understanding Skinning Resistance Inheritance And Differential Gene Expression In Sweetpotato [Ipomea Batatas (L.) Lam.], Reeve Daniel Legendre
Understanding Skinning Resistance Inheritance And Differential Gene Expression In Sweetpotato [Ipomea Batatas (L.) Lam.], Reeve Daniel Legendre
LSU Master's Theses
Burgeoning demand for sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] is being driven by strong consumer consumption of fries and robust fresh market sales. Acreage has rebounded to meet needs, but increased supply has weighed negatively on fresh market prices, and processing sweetpotato is generally at a low price point. Growers are challenged with increasing production costs and labor is the most expensive input; reducing labor costs through mechanized harvest is critical. Many popular varieties of sweetpotato are highly susceptible to skinning damage and the problems that are associated with exposed root flesh such as rotting, weight loss, and sunken areas. The …
Biogeochemical Controls On Biodegradation Of Mc252 Crude Oil In Coastal Wetland Systems, Matthew Paul Rodrigue
Biogeochemical Controls On Biodegradation Of Mc252 Crude Oil In Coastal Wetland Systems, Matthew Paul Rodrigue
LSU Master's Theses
Weathering of MC252 oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill is taking place in coastal Louisiana marsh and mangrove wetland systems. Alkylated phenanthrenes and dibenzothiophenes, which are the most prominent PAHs found at MC252 contaminated sites, are weathering at rates up to 5% per year relative to alkylated chrysenes 3 years after initial oiling. Flux chambers at marsh locations trapped CO2 that exhibited δ13C signatures lower than indigenous organic matter signifying hydrocarbon mineralization to CO2. Weathering rates at each of these locations are heavily influenced by the biogeochemistry of the surrounding environment. High-resolution nutrient profiles were obtained at different locations …

Prevalence Of Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Diseases, Parasites, And Symbionts In Louisiana, Holly Rogers
LSU Master's Theses
Research on blue crab diseases, parasites, and symbionts has been sporadic in the Gulf of Mexico. Understanding the prevalence of diseases, parasites, and symbionts is important for managers to set informed regulations for the commercial industry and to understand the impacts of environmental disasters on aquatic animal health. The objective of this research was to determine the prevalence of Lagenophrys callinectes, Urosporidium crescens, Hematodinium perezi, Loxothylacus texanus, reo-like virus (RLV), shell rot, and Vibrio spp. in crabs collected from four coastal locations and four shedding facilities in 2013 and the beginning of 2014. Additionally, I determined the prevalence of white …

Characterization Of Cry1f Resistance In Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda (J.E. Smith) Obtained From Puerto Rico And Florida, Vikash Dangal
LSU Master's Theses
The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)) is a major pest targeted by transgenic corn expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins in both North and South America. The objective of this study was to characterize the inheritance and fitness costs of the Cry1F resistance in two fall armyworm populations collected from Puerto Rico (RR-PR) and Florida (RR-FL). To determine the inheritance of the resistance, besides RR-PR, RR-FL, and a Cry1F-susceptible population (Bt-SS), 14 other populations were developed by reciprocal crosses, F1 by F1 crosses, backcrosses, and crosses between RR-PR and RR-FL. Diet-incorporated bioassays were conducted to determine the Cry1F susceptibility …

An Efficient Approach To Epid Transit Dosimetry, Bart Alan Morris
LSU Master's Theses
Introduction: In order to maintain uniform standards in the accuracy of fractionated radiation therapy, quantification of the delivered dose per fraction accuracy is required. The pupose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a transit dosimetry method using the electronic portal imaging device (EPID) for dose delivery error detection and prevention. Methods and Materials: In the proposed method, 2D predicted transit images were generated for comparison with online images acquired during treatment. Predicted transit images were generated by convolving through-air EPID measurements of each field with pixel-specific kernels selected from a library of pre-calculated Monte Carlo pencil kernels …
Direct Marketing Of Louisiana Shrimp: A Cost-Earnings Analysis, Jill Christoferson
Direct Marketing Of Louisiana Shrimp: A Cost-Earnings Analysis, Jill Christoferson
LSU Master's Theses
Secondary data on cost and earnings from a 2012 survey of inshore Louisiana shrimpers was used as the foundation this partial budget analysis examining the feasibility of supplementing direct marketing (DM) strategies for Louisianan shrimp harvesters. Refinement of key variables for the analysis was conducted using supplemental surveys in 2014 of DM shrimp harvesters and DM consumers. The DM harvester survey (n= 72) produced information on actual price per pound for DM shrimp, as well as catch grade distribution, product marketing mix, and labor estimates. The DM consumer survey (n=255) yielded information on participants’ preferences for DM shrimp, including actual …
Application Of Tubular Crossflow Microfiltration In Harvesting Microalgae, Mostafa Khademi
Application Of Tubular Crossflow Microfiltration In Harvesting Microalgae, Mostafa Khademi
LSU Master's Theses
Separation of microalgal cells from culture medium is a challenging phase of algal production. Application of microfiltration as Stage 1 harvesting technology to pre-concentrate algal suspension from 0.2 g-dry/L to 10 g-dry/L (1% solids) prior to the final dewatering stage by centrifugation (Stage 2) was studied in this research. A bench-scale filtration setup with three tubular crossflow membrane modules (pore sizes: 0.05 µm, 0.1 µm, 0.5µm) equipped with data acquisition systems was constructed. In phase-1 experiments, the influence of algal species and the size of particles in the culture media on the filterability of microalgae were studied. It was found …
Production, Discard, And Urban Life At The Early Horizon Center Of Caylán, Coastal Peru, Jacob Pate Warner
Production, Discard, And Urban Life At The Early Horizon Center Of Caylán, Coastal Peru, Jacob Pate Warner
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis I examine material production, discard, and trash flow at the Early Horizon urban center of Caylán (800 – 1 cal. BC) on the Peruvian North-Central coast. Trash (or garbage, refuse, litter, or waste) is a central source of information for archaeologists examining prehistoric lifeways in Peru. Despite frequent use of trash as a source for radiocarbon samples, cultural material, and dietary evidence, few studies utilize the transportation and concentration of trash to examine human behavioral patterns. The Early Horizon, as a transitional period in Peruvian prehistory, presents an opportunity to test the utility of trash deposits in …
Effects Of Salinity And Temperature On Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Of Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Shea A. Miller
Effects Of Salinity And Temperature On Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Of Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Shea A. Miller
LSU Master's Theses
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has been proposed as an easy and accurate technique for a non-lethal index of condition in fish; however, factors affecting its accuracy have yet to be properly identified. The technique uses the resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) of water and lipids in contiguous tissues to estimate lipid content. Studies have investigated the use of BIA on fish, but with mixed results, possibly caused by unrecognized sources of influences. Our study explored possible sources of variance for BIA measurements in gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, through laboratory feeding and fasting experiments, and experimental exposures to acute changes in …
Determination Of Predominant Species Of Oil-Degrading Bacteria In The Oiled Sediment In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Lauren Nicole Navarre
Determination Of Predominant Species Of Oil-Degrading Bacteria In The Oiled Sediment In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Lauren Nicole Navarre
LSU Master's Theses
The effects of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill on the bacterial communities in coastal sediments are relatively known but few studies have been published evaluating the impacts of the spill on oil-degrading bacterial populations in the salt marsh sediments of Barataria Bay, Louisiana. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of the oil spill on the microbial community in Barataria Bay, Louisiana through the determination of predominate species of oil-degrading bacteria in marsh sediments, and to determine how well certain bacterial isolates can degrade crude oil in the region by taking samples from three areas of …
