Potential Of Moringa Oleifera L. As Livestock Fodder Crop: A Review, Wasif Nouman, Shahzad Maqsood Ahmed Basra, Muhammad Tahir Siddiqui, Azra Yasmeen, Tehseen Gull, Maria Angelica Cervantes Alcayde

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Dairy and meat production in dry regions is very complex due to low quality and shortage of fodder, especially in dry periods. Livestock scientists are eager to explore and investigate good-quality fodders that can boost milk and meat production in an organic and economical way. Some organic meals like soybean, cotton seed cake, and range grasses are being utilized to overcome the fodder shortage. These have some limitations, however, like unavailability in December through May as currently green fodder is least available after wheat, alfalfa, brassica, and maize harvesting. This leads towards reduced livestock production and low-quality milk and meat …

Artificial Neural Networks In Online Semiautomated Pest Discriminability: An Applied Case With 2 Thrips Species, Peter Fedor, Eladia Maria Peña-Méndez, Halina Kucharczyk, Jaromir Vanhara, Josef Havel, Martina Doricova, Pavol Prokop

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Being faced with practical problems in pest identification, we present a methodical paper based on artificial neural networks to discriminate morphologically very similar species, Thrips sambuci Heeger, 1854 and Thrips fuscipennis Haliday, 1836 (Thysanoptera: Thripinae), as an applied case for more general use. The artificially intelligent system may be successfully applied as a credible, online, semiautomated identification tool that extracts hidden information from noisy data, even when the standard characters have much overlap and the common morphological keys hint at the practical problem of high morphological plasticity. Statistical analysis of 17 characters, measured or determined for each Thrips fuscipennis and …

Cereal cyst nematodes (CCNs) are plant parasites that significantly limit global cereal production. The most frequently reported pathogenic species are Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi, and H. latipons. One of the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and easily adopted control measures is the use of genetic host resistance, which maintains nematode populations below the economic damage threshold level. Many effective sources of resistance to CCNs have been identified in cereals; however, their effectiveness and usefulness is dependent on the interaction of the specific putative resistant accession and the CCN pathotype found in a specific region. In this study, 719 wheat lines from …

Comparison Of Life Experiences Of Men And Women In The Sciences, Tori Nicole Quist Jan 2014

Comparison Of Life Experiences Of Men And Women In The Sciences, Tori Nicole Quist

Honors Program Theses

A lack of sense of belonging and stereotype threat have been shown to contribute to women leaving the sciences (Seymour, 1997; Beasley & Fischer, 2012; Deemer et al., 2013). Contributing to this is the fact that most women find affirmation externally (through friends, family and professors) for their life decisions (Seymour, 1997; Zeldin, 2000). A set of comparative studies in 2000 and 2008 were done examining factors affecting women’s and men’s choices of majors and careers (Zeldin, 2000 and Zeldin, 2008). These studies concluded that men relied on achievements in science as the source of their career decisions to enter …

A Study Of Induction Pyrolysis Of Lignicellulosic Biomass For The Production Of Bio-Oil, Charles Edward Henkel Jan 2014

A Study Of Induction Pyrolysis Of Lignicellulosic Biomass For The Production Of Bio-Oil, Charles Edward Henkel

LSU Master's Theses

The increasing demand for energy coupled with a growing concern that the combustion of fossil fuels has on the environment, through the production of greenhouse gases, has created a demand for renewable energy sources. The demand for renewable energy, particularly liquid transportation fuels, can be met in part by the use of biomass based liquid fuels. There are several methods that can be used to produce biomass based fuels, but only thermochemical conversion (pyrolysis) can readily convert lignocellulosic biomass into a fuel-like liquid, bio-oil. The pyrolytic conditions for obtaining maximum liquid yields vary, but many of the criteria can be …

Silver Nanoparticle Oligonucleotide Conjugate For Targeted Gene Silencing, Alyson Nanette Moll Jan 2014

Silver Nanoparticle Oligonucleotide Conjugate For Targeted Gene Silencing, Alyson Nanette Moll

LSU Master's Theses

This project explored a gene-regulated chemotherapy using a silver nanoparticle (SNP) conjugated with deoxyribozyme (DNAzyme) oligonucleotides which target a mutated gene in select cancer cells, sensitize them to doxorubicin treatment. Light exposure to the SNP-DNAzyme conjugates disengages the oligonucleotides and permits specific cleavage of the Kirsten Rat Sarcomal Oncogene Homolog (K-RAS) mRNA. These conjugates could provide spatiotemporal specificity in killing only those photoexposed cells with the mutant gene. Synthesis, functionalization and characterization of citrate and hydroxypropyl cellulose SNP conjugates confirmed attachment and photolytic release of the thiol-modified 10-23 DNAzyme. Gel electrophoresis was used to demonstrate DNAzyme photoactivation, showing greater K-RAS …

Bioavailability Of Alpha-Tocopherol Entrapped In Poly (Lactide-Co-Glycolide) (Plga) And Plga-Chitosan Nanoparticles, Lacey Caroline Simon

LSU Master's Theses

Alpha-tocopherol (áT) is a hydrophobic, antioxidant molecule shown to prevent or retard the effects of free radicals associated with diseases. It is hypothesized that the bioavailability of áT can be improved when entrapped in PLGA (Poly lactide-co-glycolide) and PLGA-Chi (PLGA-Chitosan) nanoparticles and that the mucoadhesive properties of chitosan may enhance absorption more than PLGA alone. PLGA and PLGA-Chi NPs synthesized with PVA as surfactant were characterized by measuring entrapment efficiency, size, PDI, and zeta potential when suspended in DI water. Nanoparticle physical stability was evaluated via NP exposure to environmental pH ranging from 2.5-9. Chemical stability of entrapped áT was …

Avian Biogeography And Conservation In Eastern Indonesia, John C. Mittermeier Jan 2014

Avian Biogeography And Conservation In Eastern Indonesia, John C. Mittermeier

LSU Master's Theses

Evaluating the conservation status of threatened species requires a sequential process of 1) taxonomic classification, 2) distributional mapping, and 3) evaluation of species according to criteria established by the IUCN Red List. Knowledge gaps in the first two phases of this process have been termed the Linnaean and Wallacean Shortfalls, respectively. The Indonesian archipelago is one of the most biologically diverse areas of the planet, as well as one of the most threatened and poorly studied, and the Linnaean and Wallacean Shortfalls pose substantial challenges for conservation in the region. Here I address each of the three stages of categorizing …

Hamiltonian Approach To The Modeling Of Internal Geophysical Waves With Vorticity, Alan Compelli Jan 2014

Hamiltonian Approach To The Modeling Of Internal Geophysical Waves With Vorticity, Alan Compelli

Articles

We examine a simplified model of internal geophysical waves in a rotational 2-dimensional water-wave system, under the influence of Coriolis forces and with gravitationally induced waves. The system consists of a lower medium, bound underneath by an impermeable flat bed, and an upper lid. The 2 media have a free common interface. Both media have constant density and constant (non-zero) vorticity. By examining the governing equations of the system we calculate the Hamiltonian of the system in terms of its conjugate variables and perform a variable transformation to show that it has canonical Hamiltonian structure. We then linearize the system, …

Temporal Variability Of Particulate Organic Carbon Fluxes In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Somiddho Bosu Jan 2014

Temporal Variability Of Particulate Organic Carbon Fluxes In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Somiddho Bosu

LSU Master's Theses

There is limited data of Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) export from the Northern Gulf of Mexico and this work presents the first estimation of the efficiency of the “biological pump” in this region. In oligotrophic oceans like the Gulf of Mexico, POC is the main source of particles and POC flux is the key mechanism for the removal of particle reactive contaminants and pollutants from upper ocean water column. Particle-reactive, the naturally occurring radionuclides are useful tracers of the sinking flux of organic matter from the surface to the deep ocean. The disequilibrium between natural radioisotope pair 238U-234Th as well …

Optimizing Bioengineered Coastal Materials, Matthew Byrum Jan 2014

Optimizing Bioengineered Coastal Materials, Matthew Byrum

LSU Master's Theses

Developing materials that are environmentally friendly and capable of high performance is important to maximize the efficiency and success of coastal restoration projects. Louisiana is losing large amounts of coastal land each year, while suffering 90% of the United States’ coastal wetland loss. Some areas have begun to implement physical structures to dissipate wave energy and accrete sediment. Recent technological advances have allowed the transformation of these structures into engineered ecosystems, with a focus on oyster accumulation. These ecosystems support the growth of oysters, Crassostrea virginica, which serve to improve water quality and protect shorelines through filtration and wave energy …

Using Seed Recovery Methods To Determine Causes Of Failed Germination In Native Prairie Species, Paige Leytem Jan 2014

Using Seed Recovery Methods To Determine Causes Of Failed Germination In Native Prairie Species, Paige Leytem

Honors Program Theses

Prairie restorations are expensive and emergence rates as low as ten percent are often observed. This could be because seeds are exposed to dangers from microbial and fungal attack, as well as predation from granivores after planting. Our experiment aimed to determine the post-dispersal seed fates of four native prairie species after they had been planted in the soil and covered with an exclosure to limit vertebrate predation. It was performed in a prairie restoration on the University of Northern Iowa Campus in Cedar Falls, Iowa. I coated five sets of 100 seeds of each species (Elymus canadensis, Oligoneuron rigidum, …
