The Genetics And Physiology Of Abiotic Stress Disorder In Swede (Brassica Napus Var. Napobrassica), Faiz Fadhel
The Genetics And Physiology Of Abiotic Stress Disorder In Swede (Brassica Napus Var. Napobrassica), Faiz Fadhel
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Swedes are extremely common as a root vegetable in Europe, USA, and Canada but are affected by the occasional presence of Brown Heart (BH) disorder affecting the marketable swede root. The incidence of BH has been reported worldwide however it is very difficult to breed resistance due to its sporadic occurrence with no external symptoms to select for. BH has been attributed to boron availability but attempts to link BH appearance definitively with boron deficiency have been difficult. Anecdotal evidence from breeders and growers highlighted the recent co-appearance of BH and frost injury in the field and it was postulated …

Implementation Of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy For The Rapid Typing Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli., S. E. Dawson, T. Gibreel, N. Nicolaou, H. Alrabiah, Y. Xu, R. Goodacre, M. Upton
School of Biomedical Sciences
In this paper, we demonstrate that Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is able to discriminate rapidly between uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) of key lineages with only relatively simple sample preparation. A total of 95 bacteria from six different epidemiologically important multilocus sequence types (ST10, ST69, ST95, ST73, ST127 and ST131) were used in this project and principal component-discriminant function analysis (PC-DFA) of these samples produced clear separate clustering of isolates, based on the ST. Analysis of data using partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), incorporating cross-validation, indicated a high prediction accuracy of 91.19% for ST131. These results suggest that FT-IR spectroscopy …

The Implications Of Co-Locating Marine Protected Areas Around Offshore Wind Farms, Matthew Ashley
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Offshore wind farm (OWF) construction in the UK is progressing rapidly alongside increasing spatial pressures on marine ecosystems and social and economic activities. A need for increased protection of habitats, species and ecological processes that support environmental and economic benefits is being met by designation of marine protected areas (MPAs). Mitigation and spatial planning solutions are required to enable protection of vital ecological habitats, features and processes and support sustainable economic development. A potential solution is to co-locate OWFs and MPAs. This study uses a multi-disciplinary approach to examine if evidence on the environmental effects of existing OWFs and associated …

Background: New effective treatments for metastatic melanoma greatly improve survival in a proportion of patients. However biomarkers to identify patients that are more likely to benefit from a particular treatment are needed. We previously reported on a multimarker approach for the detection of heterogenous melanoma circulating tumour cells (CTCs). Here we evaluated the prognostic value of this multimarker quantification of CTCs and investigated whether changes in CTC levels during therapy can be used as a biomarker of treatment response and survival outcomes. Methods: CTCs were captured by targeting the melanoma associated markers MCSP and MCAM as well as the melanoma stem …

Reducing Depression During The Menopausal Transition: Study Protocol For A Randomised Controlled Trial, Osvaldo P. Almeida, Kylie Marsh, Leon Flicker, Martha Hickey, Andrew Ford, Moira Sim
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: The menopausal transition (MT) is a biological inevitability for all ageing women that can be associated with changes in mood, including depressive symptoms. There is tentative evidence that women who develop depression during the MT have greater risk of subsequent depressive episodes, as well as increased health morbidity and mortality. Thus, preventing depression during the MT could enhance both current and the future health and well-being of women. This study aims to test the efficacy of a client-centred health promotion intervention to decrease the 12-month incidence of clinically significant symptoms of depression among women undergoing the MT.Methods/Design: This randomised …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: Microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) is abundant in neurons and functions in assembly and stabilization of microtubules to maintain cytoskeletal structure. Human MAPT transcripts undergo alternative splicing to produce 3R and 4R isoforms normally present at approximately equal levels in the adult brain. Imbalance of the 3R-4R isoform ratio can affect microtubule binding and assembly and may promote tau hyperphosphorylation and neurofibrillary tangle formation as seen in neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Conditions involving hypoxia such as cerebral ischemia and stroke can promote similar tau pathology but whether hypoxic conditions cause changes in MAPT …

Development Of Leaf Shape And Vein Homologies In Five Species Of The Genus Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae), Austin William Jones
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Angiosperm leaves are extremely variable in form while predominantly maintaining the function of the primary photosynthetic organ of the plant. Changes in leaf form can result from myriad physiological processes which may be influenced by ecology, physical stimuli, phylogeny, or other factors. In studying the development of divergent leaf forms among closely related species, conserved morphological elements may be identified that are not apparent in the mature form. The genus Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae) contains over 600 species and a wide range in leaf shapes. Five species, I. purpurea, I. coccinea, I. sloteri, I. quamoclit, and I. cairica show a range in …

Impact Of Small-World Topology On The Performance Of A Feed-Forward Artificial Neural Network Based On 2 Different Real-Life Problems, Okan Erkaymaz, Mahmut Özer, Nejat Yumuşak
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Since feed-forward artificial neural networks (FFANNs) are the most widely used models to solve real-life problems, many studies have focused on improving their learning performances by changing the network architecture and learning algorithms. On the other hand, recently, small-world network topology has been shown to meet the characteristics of real-life problems. Therefore, in this study, instead of focusing on the performance of the conventional FFANNs, we investigated how real-life problems can be solved by a FFANN with small-world topology. Therefore, we considered 2 real-life problems: estimating the thermal performance of solar air collectors and predicting the modulus of rupture values …

A Microscopic Approach To The Pedogenic Formation Of Palygorskite Associated With Quaternary Calcretes Of The Adana Area, Southern Turkey, Meryem Yeşi̇lot Kaplan, Muhsi̇n Eren, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r, Seli̇m Kapur, Jennifer Huggett
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Quaternary calcretes in the Adana area (southern Turkey) are widespread and occur in a variety of forms such as nodular, columnar/tubular, fracture-infill, laminated hardpan, and conglomeratic crusts. Palygorskite associated with calcrete nodules, tubes, and fracture-infills in the columnar horizon and adjacent host-rock mudstones suggests a cogenetic formation. The Beta-fabric (biogenic) constituents and stable isotope values of calcretes support a pedogenic origin for calcretes and also palygorskite. Extensions of palygorskite fibre and fibre bundles from euhedral to subhedral calcite crystals in calcretes and from smectite flakes in adjacent host-rock mudstone suggest an authigenic origin related to calcretisation in which precipitation and …

3D scanners offer many advantages to scientists and museum curators, such as a permanent digital archival record of the scanned object, the non-intrusive nature of 3D laser surface scanning, the ability to create and share a digital collection with other researchers, and the portability of recent scanners. With the purpose of determining the feasibility of creating a 3D research collection in mind, I have scanned and studied skeletal material from Wild Cane Cay and Moho Cay, Belize. I explore how the 3D model compares to the physical bone and the significance of 3D imaging to the anthropological community.
Assimilation, A Biological Nitrogen Removal Strategy For Freshwater Ornamental Fish Hatcheries, Fatemehsadat Fahandezhsadi
Assimilation, A Biological Nitrogen Removal Strategy For Freshwater Ornamental Fish Hatcheries, Fatemehsadat Fahandezhsadi
LSU Master's Theses
Freshwater ornamental fish production is a major component of aquaculture in the southeastern United States. Closed recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs) allow freshwater ornamental fish hatcheries to mimic native water quality conditions for sensitive species. Total ammonia-N (TAN) removal is the major concern for closed RASs. Biological nitrification is the common method to control TAN. However, the nitrification process might be impaired in acidic water condition with pH<7. Another issue of using the nitrification process for TAN removal is that the nitrification is not sufficient to compensate for the amount of ammonia released in larval production systems because of slow growth rate of nitrifying bacteria. To address these issues, this study suggests an aerobic assimilation strategy in which fast growing heterotrophic bacteria directly convert TAN into microbial biomass. The heterotrophic bacteria needs an external carbon source. This study employed polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) that is a solid insoluble bioplastic, as a carbon source in the aerobic assimilation process to avoid releasing carbon into the system. In order to understand the applicability of an assimilation process instead of nitrification, this study compared the ammonia-N removal rate by aerobic assimilation biofilters operating @ pH 8 and 6.5 in a batch system. The study also quantified the performance of an aerobic assimilation strategy under different continuous nitrogen loading regimes. This investigation can be used to establish the biofilter air pulsing frequency, which is the optimized air pulsing frequency that avoids clogging in the system. The results showed that there was no apparent release of carbon in the water tank. Unlike nitrification, assimilation strategy for TAN removal was not significantly different in two pH of 8 and 6.5 @ 28 ° C. The average consumption rate of the PHB was found as 21.93± 0.43 grams of PHB consumed per gram of TAN. The results from the continuous system, at a continuous feeding rate of 350 mg-N/d, suggested that the optimum air pulsing frequency through the PHB bed for releasing the excess biosolids was about 6-hour. In general, the study found that the aerobic assimilation using polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) as a carbon source is an applicable method for ammonia-N removal particularly for freshwater ornamental fish production systems. The drawback against this approach is that the PHB beads are expensive. However, our investigations show that the average cost of the PHB beads have been decreased dramatically during the last few years. This might indicate that the assimilation using PHB beads can be a reasonable choice for ammonia-N removal particularly for freshwater ornamental fish production systems.
Habitat Associations Of Lower Mississippi River Floodplain Fishes On St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge, Alonda Mccarty
Habitat Associations Of Lower Mississippi River Floodplain Fishes On St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge, Alonda Mccarty
LSU Master's Theses
Each year, floodplain habitats are inundated and dewatered throughout the lower Mississippi River during the flood pulse. Many organisms, particularly fishes, are facultative or obligate users of inundated floodplain habitats for foraging and reproduction. The abundance and distribution of these fishes are influenced by annual floods, ranging from weeks to months depending on intensity and duration of the pulse. One major consequence of anthropogenic alterations to the river has been the sequential loss of connectivity of floodplain habitats. In light of these changes, a concentrated effort has been made to restore the integrity of the LMR floodplain. An integral part …
Dgge Analysis Of Denitrifying Bacterial Diversity In Response To Nutrients And Oil Contamination In Salt Marshes, Catalina Restrepo
Dgge Analysis Of Denitrifying Bacterial Diversity In Response To Nutrients And Oil Contamination In Salt Marshes, Catalina Restrepo
LSU Master's Theses
Salt marsh ecosystems located at the Mississippi River delta are exposed to high levels of point and nonpoint sources of nutrients such as nitrate-based fertilizers and to oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico. However, there is little information on the effects of eutrophication and oil contamination on the bacterial diversity of denitrifying bacteria in salt marsh sediments of coastal Louisiana. The effects of excess nutrients on the bacterial diversity of denitrifiers were analyzed by injecting sediment cores with high concentrations of nitrate (100μM NO3- and 20,000μM NO3-) and carbon (0% and 20% C concentration from the original sample). After …
