Chemopreventive Effects Of Pterostilbene In Metastatic Prostate Cancer Cells, Phillip A. Zook
Chemopreventive Effects Of Pterostilbene In Metastatic Prostate Cancer Cells, Phillip A. Zook
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Recent studies find that pterostilbene (PTS) exhibits more favorable drug properties and similar chemopreventive effects to its structural analogue resveratrol (RSV). However, few studies describe the activity of PTS in prostate cancer (PCa). Here, we conducted cell count experiments to assess the effects of PTS on metastatic PCa cell viability and to compare the potency of PTS to RSV in this respect. We also performed experiments to assess the effects of PTS on the androgen receptor (AR) and AR-mediated events. We used qPCR to measure the mRNA levels of the androgenresponsive gene (ARG), prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and Western blots to …
An Analysis Of Abnormal Electrocardiograms In First And Second Year Medical School Students, Molly Anne Kalish
An Analysis Of Abnormal Electrocardiograms In First And Second Year Medical School Students, Molly Anne Kalish
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
The high stress level placed upon medical school students, particularly during their first and second didactic years, may have a negative effect on their health. Although surveys and subjective questionnaires have been used to evaluate the effects medical school has upon a student’s cardiovascular health, there has been little clinical data obtained to confirm this notion. The aim of this longitudinal study was to demonstrate whether any abnormal cardiovascular parameters, specifically QTc wave interval, cardiac axis vector and blood pressure abnormalities, could be documented to occur in two different classes of medical students during their first two years. Such information …
Effect Of Heme Oxygenase-1 On Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 Expression In Human Fibroblasts, Theresa A. Stangl
Effect Of Heme Oxygenase-1 On Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 Expression In Human Fibroblasts, Theresa A. Stangl
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) is an enzyme that plays a very important role in the resolution of inflammation. HO-1-based therapies are effective in a number of disease conditions. However, HO-1 also increases tumor growth, angiogenesis, metastasis and chemoresistance. Matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) is an enzyme involved in physiological and pathophysiological tissue remodeling. Unbalanced expression of MMPs is a key feature of connective tissue destruction in chronic inflammatory conditions. Previously shown in this laboratory, the HO-1 inducer, hemin, increased MMP-3 mRNA expression in some HGF cultures. To assess whether HO-1 and/or its products regulate expression of MMP-3 in human fibroblasts, the effect of HO-1 …

Effect Of Tumor Necrosis Factorα On Expression Of Heme-Oxgenase1 In Human Gingival Fibroblasts, Jay Patel
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that is characterized by activation of gingival fibroblasts to produce matrix metalloproteinases and other inflammatory mediators that contribute to destruction of tissues surrounding the teeth. In the United States, 22% of adults have a mild form of periodontal disease and 13% suffer from a severe form of the disease. In addition to tooth loss, periodontitis is associated with increased risk of several conditions, including diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is activated by a wide variety of stressful stimuli and levels are increased in inflamed tissues. HO-1 degrades free heme, …

Estimating Photosynthetic Activity In Microbial Mats In An Ice-Covered Antarctic Lake Using Automated Oxygen Microelectrode Profiling And Variable Chlorophyll Fluorescence, Ian Hawes, Hilke Giles, Peter T. Doran
Faculty Publications
An automated oxygen microprofiler measured a positive flux of oxygen from microbial mats in ice-covered Lake Hoare, Antarctica, from noon, at a photon flux of 20 μmol m-2 s-1, through to midnight (< 2 μmol photons m-2 s-1). Daily average oxygen flux was 200 μmol m-2 h-1; and, whereas it was maximal at noon, when a 10 mm broad concentration peak was observed 5 mm below the mat surface, flux correlated only weakly with irradiance. In contrast, relative electron transfer rate, estimated from variable chlorophyll fluorescence, suggested a linear relationship between photosystem activity and irradiance. This contradiction arose because of the conjunction of photosynthetic production of oxygen deep into these transparent, gelatinous mats (diel oxygen change was observed to 17 mm depth) and oxygen diffusion rates too slow to allow equilibration of oxygen concentration profiles with instantaneous production and consumption of oxygen. To confirm this, we developed a mathematical simulation of oxygen dynamics that included diffusion, photosynthesis, and respiration. The simulation further indicated that (1) net oxygen evolution is light limited is and confined to the upper few millimeters of the mat, (2) below 5-7 mm, respiration balanced photosynthesis, (3) below 17 mm, respiration and photosynthesis approached zero, even though organic carbon and dissolved oxygen were present, and (4) photosynthesis deep into the mat was dependent on high light transmission through the gelatinous matrix. These conclusions are consistent with current understanding of mat growth dynamics and point to approaches for long-term analysis of microbial mat productivity. © 2014, by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, Inc.

Brine Assemblages Of Ultrasmall Microbial Cells Within The Ice Cover Of Lake Vida, Antarctica, Emanuele Kuhn, Andrew S. Ichimura, Vivian Peng, Christian H. Fritsen, Gareth Trubl, Peter T. Doran, Alison E. Murray
Faculty Publications
The anoxic and freezing brine that permeates Lake Vida's perennial ice below 16mcontains an abundance of very small (≤0.2-μm) particles mixed with a less abundant population of microbial cells ranging from>0.2 to 1.5 μmin length. Fluorescent DNA staining, electron microscopy (EM) observations, elemental analysis, and extraction of high-molecular-weight genomic DNA indicated that a significant portion of these ultrasmall particles are cells. A continuous electron-dense layer surrounding a less electron-dense region was observed by EM, indicating the presence of a biological membrane surrounding a cytoplasm. The ultrasmall cells are 0.192±0.065 μ, with morphology characteristic of coccoid and diplococcic bacterial cells, …

Listening To The Us Hispanic/Latino (Latina) Sermon Listener, Danny Román-Gloro
The Asbury Journal
This paper presents the findings of an ethnographic study on preaching within the US Hispanic/Latino (Latina) community.1 The study explored the preaching event from the experience of the listener. The US Hispanic/ Latino (Latina) sermon listener represents a unique group of individuals that have a particular experience of preaching, which can provide insights on how preaching constitutes a vehicle for shaping and re-shaping a religious and social community. Through the use of in-depth interviews of a diverse group of US Hispanic/Latino (Latina) sermon listeners a series of characteristics of a good sermon were identified.
Lessons Of The Jerusalem Council For The Church’S Debate Over Sexuality, Bill T. Arnold
Lessons Of The Jerusalem Council For The Church’S Debate Over Sexuality, Bill T. Arnold
The Asbury Journal
The Jerusalem Council (Acts 15) gets widespread attention today as a model for decision-making in the church, especially with regard to the changing cultural mores related to same-sex practices. This study investigates hermeneutical assumptions in two scholarly treatments of Acts 15 in light of the literary and historical context of the Jerusalem Council, including a few exegetical details. The study focuses especially on the specifics of the Apostolic Decree in verses 28-29. The aim of the investigation is to evaluate the chapter’s use in current debates over sexual ethics, and to propose appropriate lessons of the Jerusalem Council based on …
Bird Visitation In Native Vs Non-Native Windbreaks In Monteverde, Costa Rica, 2014, Kayla Smith, Sarah Hayden
Bird Visitation In Native Vs Non-Native Windbreaks In Monteverde, Costa Rica, 2014, Kayla Smith, Sarah Hayden
Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health
Reforestation in Monteverde, Costa Rica began in the 1980’s and 1990’s and initially used non-native tree species to form windbreaks. In our study we examined bird preferences between native versus non-native trees in windbreaks. We examined three different sites with both native and non-native windbreak tree species. We found that the average bird visitation for windbreaks with native trees (4.17 birds) was not statistically different from visitation in windbreaks with non-native trees (3.50 birds) (T-test p= 0.6). This is not what we expected or other studies would suggest. Future studies should include a larger sample size with more homogeneous ages …

An In Vivo Assay For Simultaneous Monitoring Of Neuronal Activity And Behavioral Output In The Stomatogastric Nervous System Of Decapod Crustaceans, Wolfgang Stein, Florian Diehl
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Central pattern generators (CPGs) generate rhythmic output patterns and drive vital behaviors such as breathing, swallowing, locomotion and chewing 1-10. While most insights into the rhythm generating mechanisms of CPGs have been derived from isolated nervous system preparations, the relationship between neural activity and corresponding behavioral expression is often unclear. The stomatogastric system of decapod crustaceans is one of the best characterized neural system for motor pattern generation 9-12 and many mechanisms of motor pattern generation and selection have been discovered in this system. Since most studies are limited to the isolated nervous system, little is known about the …
Biogeography And Nested Patterns Of Genetic Diversity In The Diatom Thalassiosira Rotula, Kerry A. Whittaker
Biogeography And Nested Patterns Of Genetic Diversity In The Diatom Thalassiosira Rotula, Kerry A. Whittaker
Open Access Dissertations
Diatoms are some of the most biogeochemically important organisms on our planet, responsible for up to 40% of primary production in the ocean. Diatoms are also the most diverse group of algae, exhibiting high levels of cryptic speciation, and remarkable clonal diversity nested within species and populations. As single cells within a dynamic fluid environment, diatoms possess the potential to disperse throughout the globe. Yet, despite the global dispersal potential of these ecologically important organisms, little is understood about the structure and distribution of diatom diversity throughout the globe, or its ecological significance. The goal of this work was to …

Colleges and universities continue to add diversity and internationalization as major components of their strategic planning efforts. Students from various racial, ethnic and national backgrounds are expected to live and work together in an intellectual environment while bringing with them various views of race and culture that are maintained through varying myths and misconceptions. This study looked at the technical and cultural definitions of what it means to be ‘Black’ in the U.S. and the stereotypes of being classified within that racial category.
The goal of this research study was to understand the experience of students from the African Atlantic …
Impact Of Phytoplankton Community Structure And Function On Marine Particulate Optical Properties, Malcolm Neil Mcfarland
Impact Of Phytoplankton Community Structure And Function On Marine Particulate Optical Properties, Malcolm Neil Mcfarland
Open Access Dissertations
Phytoplankton are an ecologically important and diverse group of organisms whose distribution, abundance, and population dynamics vary significantly over small spatial (cm) and temporal (minutes) scales in the coastal ocean. Our inability to observe phytoplankton community structure and function at these small scales has severely limited our understanding of the fundamental ecological and evolutionary mechanisms that drive phytoplankton growth, mortality, adaptation and speciation. The goal of this dissertation was to enhance our understanding of phytoplankton ecology by improving in situ observational techniques based on the optical properties of cells, colonies, populations, and communities. Field and laboratory studies were used to …
Application Of Polymer Systems To The Detection And Retention Of Explosives, Jonathan N. Canino
Application Of Polymer Systems To The Detection And Retention Of Explosives, Jonathan N. Canino
Open Access Dissertations
Obtaining, handling, and storing of explosives, especially primaries such as triacetonetriperoxide (TATP), presents significant obstacles to instrument manufacturers and K-9 trainers. Microencapsulation techniques were used to trap TATP in a plastic matrix rendering it safe to handle, store at room temperature, and release by heating. Detection of most explosive vapor is a challenge for current instrumentation. This work provides a study of polymer systems for the preconcentration of explosive vapor for use with portable explosive detection technologies, specifically molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs).

In recent years members of the tripartite motif-containing (TRIM) family of E3 ubiquitin ligases have been shown to both positively and negatively regulate viral defence and as such are emerging as compelling targets for modulating the anti-viral immune response. In this study we identify TRIM68, a close homologue of TRIM21, as a novel regulator of Toll-like receptor (TLR)- and RIG-I-like receptor (RLR)-driven type I IFN production. Proteomic analysis of TRIM68-containing complexes identified TRK-fused gene (TFG) as a potential TRIM68 target. Overexpression of TRIM68 and TFG confirmed their ability to associate, with TLR3 stimulation appearing to enhance the interaction. TFG is …

Comparison Of Semi-Automated And Manual Measurements Of Carotid Intima-Media Thickening, Oscar Mac Ananey, G Mellotte, V Maher
Articles
Carotid intima-media thickening (CIMT) is a marker of both arteriosclerotic and atherosclerotic risks. Technological advances have semiautomated CIMT image acquisition and quantification. Studies comparing manual and automated methods have yielded conflicting results possibly due to plaque inclusion in measurements. Low atherosclerotic risk subjects (n = 126) were recruited to minimise the effect of focal atherosclerotic lesions on CIMT variability. CIMT was assessed by high-resolution B-mode ultrasound (Philips HDX7E, Phillips, UK) images of the common carotid artery using both manual and semiautomated methods (QLAB, Phillips, UK). Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the mean differences of paired measurements (Bland-Altman method) were used …

Syntheses And Characterizations Of Linearly Extended Thiazinium Salts As Organic Semiconductors, Yanmei Rong
Master's Theses and Capstones
Organic semiconductors have been the subject of both academic and industrial interest due to their potential advantages over inorganic semiconductors. Based on the type of charge transporting (hole or electron), organic semiconductors can be categorized as n-type (electron transporting) or p-type (hole transporting). Most attention has been concentrated on the development of p-type organic semiconductors and their development has led to dramatic enhancements in the performance of hole transporting material. However, the investigation and application of electron transporting organic semiconductors has not drawn as much attention. In this project, we focus on the exploration, design, synthesis and characterization of novel …

Evaluating The Role Of Hypoglycemia & Comorbid Illness On Diabetes Management Behaviors, Saumitra Vijay Rege
Open Access Dissertations
Over the recent years, the incidence of diabetes has significantly increased. Use of preventive services and treatment with oral antidiabetic drugs (OAD) has remained cornerstone in the management of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Despite strong evidence that treating diabetes using these disease management strategies decreases morbidity, mortality and complications, glycemic control as well as other diabetes related outcomes remain unsatisfactory. The prevalence of diabetes in the United States has grown vastly in proportion over the last few years with the American Diabetes Association estimating that 9.3% of the population suffered from diabetes in the year 2012. These estimates are expected …
