Development Of Fad7-1 Single Mutant Arabidopsis Thaliana Plants That Are Resistant To Aphids, Kaleb L. Vaughn, Carlos A. Avila, Carmen S. Padilla-Marcia, Fiona L. Goggin

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Aphids are a group of sap-feeding insects that attack most of the world’s crops. The loss of function of fatty acid desaturase7 (FAD7) in Solanum lycopersicum (tomato plant) induces aphid resistance that is dependent upon the accumulation of plant defense hormones such as salicylic acid (SA). Tomato lacks most of the genetic resources found in the model plant Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). There is an analogous fad7-1 line of Arabidopsis; however, the line has a background mutation, the glabra-1 (gl1), that causes the absence of trichomes (small hairs), which are essential to plant defense. In order to study aphid resistance, a …

Access And Benefit Sharing Of Marine Genetic Resources From Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction: Intellectual Property--Friend, Not Foe, Eve Heafey Jan 2014

Access And Benefit Sharing Of Marine Genetic Resources From Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction: Intellectual Property--Friend, Not Foe, Eve Heafey

Chicago Journal of International Law

The applicable international legal framework for the governance of marine genetic resources from areas beyond national jurisdiction is difficult to sort out- at best, it is unclear under which regime such resources fall, and at worst, there is no applicable regime. Despite the ambiguity, the bioprospecting of these resources is ongoing and increasingly being undertaken for commercial purposes. It follows that intellectual property claims, such as patents on inventions and copyrights on publications describing discoveries, are being sought in relation to inventions and publications deriving from these bioprospecting efforts. As a result, nation states are raising important questions regarding the …

Segmentation And Spatial Depth Ridge Detection Of Unorganized Point Cloud Data, James Clark Church Jan 2014

Segmentation And Spatial Depth Ridge Detection Of Unorganized Point Cloud Data, James Clark Church

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual 3D data are of interest to a number of fields: medical professionals, game designers, graphic designers, and (in the interest of this paper) ichthyologists interested in the taxonomy of fish. Since the release of the Kinect for the Microsoft XBox, game designers have been interested in using the 3D data returned by the device to understand human movement and translate that movement into an interface with which to interact with game systems. In the medical field, researchers must use computer vision tools to navigate through the data found in CT scans and MRI scans. These tools must segment images …

Honors Theses and Capstones

High water quality and natural buffers exist on Kingswood Lake located in Brookfield, New Hampshire. A comprehensive lakes inventory (CSI) was recorded and health of the land, wildlife, and waterways were observed. Educational outreach was taken to inform the local community and to instruct them on proper stewardship of the land. A completed watershed management plan was constructed including key recommendation of limiting nitrogen loading in the area, checking septic systems for leaching, stabilizing shoreline from erosion, and establishing man-made rain gardens to help preserve water quality. The Kingswood watershed management plan acts as a guide for the town of …

Developing Genetic Tools For Geobacillus, Brittany Artale Jan 2014

Developing Genetic Tools For Geobacillus, Brittany Artale

Honors Theses and Capstones

Bacillus and Geobacillus are the primary bacterium used in biotechnology industries due to their ability to excrete extracellular materials such as proteins, enzymes and other byproducts. Bacillus subtilis, has a well-characterized competence machinery, giving way to characterized genetic tools. However, a significant problem associated with working with Bacillus is the regulation of endospore formation. An alternative to Bacillus is Geobacillus, a thermophilic bacterium. Thermophiles offer significant advantages over other bacteria as host organisms in biofuel, bioremediation, and biocatalyst processes. However, the genetic tools and competency associated with Geobacillus is still unknown. Through, genetic engineering the ability …

The “Surgical” Legitimacy Of Drone Strikes? Issues Of Sovereignty And Human Rights In The Use Of Unmanned Aerial Systems In Pakistan, Alcides Eduardo Dos Reis Peron Jan 2014

The “Surgical” Legitimacy Of Drone Strikes? Issues Of Sovereignty And Human Rights In The Use Of Unmanned Aerial Systems In Pakistan, Alcides Eduardo Dos Reis Peron

Journal of Strategic Security

The Revolution in Military Affairs had an important role in providing the United States Armed Forces the technical instruments necessary to conduct high-risky operations in the context of Irregular Warfare. The development of these instruments, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), allowed the emergence of a discourse of surgical and lean wars by the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, whose legitimacy of the interventions were related to the accuracy and technical superiority of the UAVs. Focusing in the case of the U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan, this article seeks to debate the legal limits of the employment of …

© 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved. Soft-tissue fossils capture exquisite biological detail and provide our clearest views onto the rise of animals across the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition. The processes contributing to fossilization of soft tissues, however, have long been a subject of debate. The Ediacaran Gaojiashan biota displays soft-tissue preservational styles ranging from pervasive pyritization to carbonaceous compression, and thus provides an excellent opportunity to dissect the relationships between these taphonomic pathways. Here geochemical analyses of the Gaojiashan fossil Conotubus hemiannulatus show that pyrite precipitation was fuelled by the degradation of labile tissues through bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR). Pyritization …

Effect Of Hydrologic, Geomorphic, And Vegetative Conditions On Avian Communities In The Middle Rio Grande Of New Mexico, Sarah G. Hamilton Jan 2014

Effect Of Hydrologic, Geomorphic, And Vegetative Conditions On Avian Communities In The Middle Rio Grande Of New Mexico, Sarah G. Hamilton

LSU Master's Theses

Anthropogenic regulation of the Middle Rio Grande (MRG) of New Mexico has altered the hydrogeomorphology of the system and led to a rapid decline in breeding riparian-obligate birds as native riparian forests are replaced by exotic tamarisk stands. In this study, I evaluated the relationships among hydrogeomorphology, vegetation structure and composition, and avian communities of the San Acacia Reach (SAR) of the MRG. I conducted avian point count surveys and collected habitat data to determine avian community structure and abundance, geomorphic feature, surface flooding, and vegetation structure and composition along 44 transects throughout the SAR. A total of 999 point …

Antidepressants And Melanoma: Is There A Link?, Stephanie Douglas Jan 2014

Antidepressants And Melanoma: Is There A Link?, Stephanie Douglas

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND MELANOMA: IS THERE A LINK? Stephanie R. Douglas, Deepak Narayan. Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT.

Cutaneous melanoma is the sixth most common cancer in the United States, and its incidence continues to rise steadily at a rate of 2-3% per year. Meanwhile nearly 11% of the general population is treated with antidepressant medication. Laboratory studies suggest a number of theoretical links between antidepressants and melanoma. Serotonin is a growth factor for melanocytes, and antidepressants upregulate components of the Wnt/beta-catenin, mTOR, and MAP kinase signaling pathways, all …

Eph-B4 Activation Reduces Neointimal Hyperplasia In Human Saphenous Vein, Daniel James Wong Jan 2014

Eph-B4 Activation Reduces Neointimal Hyperplasia In Human Saphenous Vein, Daniel James Wong

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Despite the rise in percutaneous interventions, bypass surgery is an essential therapy for patients with advanced coronary and peripheral artery disease. Nearly half of the saphenous vein grafts used in these operations are eventually complicated by pathologic remodeling known as neointimal hyperplasia (NIH). Recent work in animal models has shown that the development of NIH can be reduced by stimulation of the receptor tryrosine kinase Eph-B4 by systemic injections of its ligand ephrin-b2. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the reduction of intimal hyperplasia observed with Eph-B4 stimulation in animal models translated into human tissues. Specifically we …

Thermohaline Staircases In The Western Mediterranean Sea, Harry L. Bryden, Katrin Schroeder, Stefania Sparnocchia, Mireno Borghini, Anna Vetrano Jan 2014

Thermohaline Staircases In The Western Mediterranean Sea, Harry L. Bryden, Katrin Schroeder, Stefania Sparnocchia, Mireno Borghini, Anna Vetrano

Journal of Marine Research

Thermohaline staircase structures are commonly observed in the western Mediterranean Sea within the halocline-thermocline connecting the Levantine Intermediate Water at about 400 m depth with the western Mediterranean deep waters below 1,500 m. In this halocline-thermocline where warmer, saltier waters overlie colder, fresher deep waters, salt finger mixing processes are thought to be active and produce staircases with layers of order 75 m thickness containing nearly constant properties separated by sharp steps of order 6 m thickness with jumps in properties between the layers. While the layers have nearly constant salinity, potential temperature, and potential density, each property decreases very …

A Constraint On The Thickness-Weighted Average Equation Of Motion Deduced From Energetics, Kunihiro Aoki Jan 2014

A Constraint On The Thickness-Weighted Average Equation Of Motion Deduced From Energetics, Kunihiro Aoki

Journal of Marine Research

This study reviews the system governed by the thickness-weighted average (TWA) equation of motion, considering energetics. It is known that the TWA equation of motion based on the primitive equation describes the fluid motion with the residual mean velocity defined as the TWA velocity and is written in the same form as the nondissipative primitive equation, except that the eddy momentum fluxes (the interfacial form stress and Reynolds flux associated with eddy motion) are embedded in this equation. Also, incompressibility and density (buoyancy) conservation in the adiabatic condition hold in this system. In this study, considering that the TWA system …

On The Structure And Distribution Of Thin Anticyclonic Lenses In The Southeast Pacific Ocean, T. Rossby Jan 2014

On The Structure And Distribution Of Thin Anticyclonic Lenses In The Southeast Pacific Ocean, T. Rossby

Journal of Marine Research

The velocity structure of an anticyclonic lens in the southeast Pacific centered at 300–400 m depth was scanned in detail with a 75 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler on the RV Atlantis during a February 2010 transit along 20° S. Embedded in the main thermocline with a vertical span of ∼500 m, the lens had an overall diameter of ∼150 km with a peak speed of 0.33 m s–1 at ∼35 km radius. Knowledge of the velocity field permitted determination of energetics and vorticity properties in detail. The ratio of potential to kinetic energy was ∼14, and the relative …

Pursuing Justice For The Child: The Forgotten Women Of In Re Gault, David S. Tanenhaus

Scholarly Works

In this article, I first draw on my recent book The Constitutional Rights of Children to introduce the facts of the case and place the case in the larger context of the history of American juvenile justice. I then focus specifically on the role of four remarkable women in the history of this landmark decision: Marjorie Gault, Gerald's mother; Amelia Lewis, Gerald's lawyer; Lorna Lockwood, an Arizona lawyer who became the first woman to serve as the Chief Justice of a State Supreme Court; and Getrude "Traute" Mainzer, who assisted in the litigation of Gerald's case before the U.S. Supreme …

How Masculinities Distribute Power: The Influence Of Ann Scales, Ann C. Mcginley, Frank Rudy Cooper Jan 2014

How Masculinities Distribute Power: The Influence Of Ann Scales, Ann C. Mcginley, Frank Rudy Cooper

Scholarly Works

Ann Scales's scholarship on masculinities in relation to sexual assault and militarism prompted us to consider exactly how power is distributed by assumptions about what is masculine. For instance, men privileged by association with hegemonic masculinities — those most dominant and preferred — are sometimes excused for acts of violence against people who are denigrated as unmasculine or excessively masculine. In one set of examples, communities excuse football players for sexual assaults on grounds that "boys will be boys." The implication is that boys should be allowed to act out before taking on adult responsibilities, and that they need to …

Lost In The Shuffle: How Health And Disability Laws Hurt Disordered Gamblers, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2014

Lost In The Shuffle: How Health And Disability Laws Hurt Disordered Gamblers, Stacey A. Tovino

Scholarly Works

Gambling disorder is not a legally sympathetic health condition. Health insurance policies and plans have long excluded treatment for gambling disorder from health insurance coverage. Individuals with gambling disorder who seek disability income insurance benefits from public and private disability income insurers also tend not to be successful in their claims. In addition, federal and state antidiscrimination laws currently exclude individuals with gambling disorder from disability discrimination protections. This Article is the first law review article to challenge the legal treatment of individuals with gambling disorder by showing how health insurance and antidiscrimination laws hurt problem gamblers. Using neuroscience, economics, …

Warmer Temperatures Increase Disease Transmission And Outbreak Intensity In A Host-Pathogen System, Bret D. Elderd, James R. Reilly Jan 2014

Warmer Temperatures Increase Disease Transmission And Outbreak Intensity In A Host-Pathogen System, Bret D. Elderd, James R. Reilly

Faculty Publications

Summary: While rising global temperatures are increasingly affecting both species and their biotic interactions, the debate about whether global warming will increase or decrease disease transmission between individuals remains far from resolved. This may stem from the lack of empirical data. Using a tractable and easily manipulated insect host-pathogen system, we conducted a series of field and laboratory experiments to examine how increased temperatures affect disease transmission using the crop-defoliating pest, the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) and its species-specific baculovirus, which causes a fatal infection. To examine the effects of temperature on disease transmission in the field, we manipulated baculovirus …
