Evaluating The Application Of Multipollutant Exposure Metrics In Air Pollution Health Studies, Michelle Oakes, Lisa Baxter, Thomas C. Long Jan 2014

Evaluating The Application Of Multipollutant Exposure Metrics In Air Pollution Health Studies, Michelle Oakes, Lisa Baxter, Thomas C. Long

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Background: Health effects associatedwith air pollution are typically evaluated using a single pollutant approach, yet people are exposed to mixtures consisting of multiple pollutants that may have independent or combined effects on human health. Development of exposure metrics that represent the multipollutant environment is important to understand the impact of ambient air pollution on human health. Objectives:We reviewed existing multipollutant exposure metrics to evaluate howthey can be applied to understand associations between air pollution and health effects. Methods: We conducted a literature search using both targeted search terms and a relational search in Web of Science and PubMed in April …

Microbial Diversities (16s And 18s Rrna Gene Pyrosequencing) And Environmental Pathogens Within Drinking Water Biofilms Grown On The Common Premise Plumbing Materials Unplasticized Polyvinylchloride And Copper, Helen Buse, Jingrang Lu, Xiaozhen Mou, Nicholas Ashbolt

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Drinking water (DW) biofilm communities influence the survival of opportunistic pathogens, yet knowledge about the microbial composition of DW biofilms developed on common in-premise plumbing material is limited. Utilizing 16S and 18S rRNA gene pyrosequencing, this study characterized the microbial community structure within DW biofilms established on unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) and copper (Cu) surfaces and the impact of introducing Legionella pneumophila (Lp) and Acanthamoeba polyphaga. Mature (> 1 year old) biofilms were developed before inoculation with sterilized DW (control, Con), Lp, or Lp and A. polyphaga (LpAp). Comparison of uPVC and Cu biofilms indicated significant differences between bacterial (P …

Institutionalized Cooperation And Resilience In Transboundary Freshwater Allocation, Olivia Odom Green, Charles Perrings Jan 2014

Institutionalized Cooperation And Resilience In Transboundary Freshwater Allocation, Olivia Odom Green, Charles Perrings

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Of all the expected impacts of climate change, the most significant is likely to be the change in the availability of freshwater associated with changing precipitation. The most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report notes that all regions of the world are expected to experience a net negative impact on water resources and freshwater ecosystems. The impact is likely to be highly variable, with some regions experiencing declining runoff and others experiencing increasing runoff. Many areas are projected to experience increased variability in precipitation and hence. in water supply, water quality, and flood risks (IPCC 2007). Individual countries …

Assessment of potential risks of complex contaminant mixtures in the environment requires integrated chemical and biological approaches. In support of the US Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the US Environmental Protection Agency lab in Duluth, MN, is developing these types of methods for assessing possible risks of aquatic contaminants in near-shore Great Lakes (USA) sites. One component involves an exposure system for caged fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) adults suitable for the wide range of habitat and deployment situations encountered in and around the Great Lakes. To complement the fish exposure system, the authors developed an automated device for collection of composite …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Predicting the success of a species' colonization into a novel environment is routinely considered to be predicated on niche‐space similarity and vacancy, as well as propagule pressure. The role genomic variation plays in colonization success (and the interaction with environment) may be suggested, but has not rigorously been documented. To test an hypothesis that previously observed ecotype‐specific polymorphisms between anadromous and landlocked alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) populations are an adaptive response to osmoregulatory challenges rather than a result of allele sampling at founding, we examined multiple anadromous and landlocked (colonized) populations for their allelic profiles at a conserved region (3’‐UTR end) …

Projecting Future Grassland Productivity To Assess The Sustainability Of Potential Biofuel Feedstock Areas In The Greater Platte River Basin, Yingxin Gu, Bruce K. Wylie, Stephen Boyte, Khem Phuyal

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

This study projects future (e.g., 2050 and 2099) grassland productivities in the Greater Platte River Basin (GPRB) using ecosystem performance (EP, a surrogate for measuring ecosystem productivity) models and future climate projections. The EP models developed from a previous study were based on the satellite vegetation index, site geophysical and biophysical features, and weather and climate drivers. The future climate data used in this study were derived from the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Climate System Model 3.0 ‘SRES A1B’ (a ‘middle’ emissions path). The main objective of this study is to assess the future sustainability of the potential …

Anatomy Of The Lamprey Ear: Morphological Evidence For Occurrence Of Horizontal Semicircular Ducts In The Labyrinth Of Petromyzon Marinus, Adel Maklad, Caitlyn Reed, Nicolas Johnson, Bernd Fritzsch Jan 2014

Anatomy Of The Lamprey Ear: Morphological Evidence For Occurrence Of Horizontal Semicircular Ducts In The Labyrinth Of Petromyzon Marinus, Adel Maklad, Caitlyn Reed, Nicolas Johnson, Bernd Fritzsch

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In jawed (gnathostome) vertebrates, the inner ears have three semicircular canals arranged orthogonally in the three Cartesian planes: one horizontal (lateral) and two vertical canals. They function as detectors for angular acceleration in their respective planes. Living jawless craniates, cyclostomes (hagfish and lamprey) and their fossil records seemingly lack a lateral horizontal canal. The jawless vertebrate hagfish inner ear is described as a torus or doughnut, having one vertical canal, and the jawless vertebrate lamprey having two. These observations on the anatomy of the cyclostome (jawless vertebrate) inner ear have been unchallenged for over a century, and the question of …

Grassland is one of the widespread biome types globally, and plays an important role in the terrestrial car-bon cycle. We examined net ecosystem production (NEP) for the temperate grasslands in northern China from 2000 to 2010. We combined flux observations, satellite data, and climate data to develop a piece-wise regression model for NEP, and then used the model to map NEP for grasslands in northern China. Over the growing season, the northern China’s grassland had a net carbon uptake of 158 ± 25 g C m−2during 2000–2010 with the mean regional NEP estimate of 126 Tg C. Our results showed …

Fitting Statistical Distributions To Sea Duck Count Data: Implications For Survey Design And Abundance Estimation, Elise Zipkin, Jeffrey Leirness, Brian Kinlan, Allan O'Connell, Emily Silverman

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Determining appropriate statistical distributions for modeling animal count data is important for accurate estimation of abundance, distribution, and trends. In the case of sea ducks along the U.S. Atlantic coast, managers want to estimate local and regional abundance to detect and track population declines, to define areas of high and low use, and to predict the impact of future habitat change on populations. In this paper, we used a modified marked point process to model survey data that recorded flock sizes of Common eiders, Long-tailed ducks, and Black, Surf, and White-winged scoters. The data come from an experimental aerial survey, …

Adverse Outcome Pathway And Risks Of Anticoagulant Rodenticides To Predatory Wildlife, Barnett A. Rattner, Rebecca S. Lazarus, John E. Elliott, Richard F. Shore, Nico Van Den Brink

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Despite a long history of successful use, routine application of some anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) may be at a crossroad due to new regulatory guidelines intended to mitigate risk. An adverse outcome pathway for ARs was developed to identify information gaps and end points to assess the effectiveness of regulations. This framework describes chemical properties of ARs, established macromolecular interactions by inhibition of vitamin K epoxide reductase, cellular responses including altered clotting factor processing and coagulopathy, organ level effects such as hemorrhage, organism responses with linkages to reduced fitness and mortality, and potential consequences to predator populations. Risk assessments have led …

The genus Macavirus of the subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae includes viruses that infect lymphoid cells of domestic and wild ruminants and swine, causing asymptomatic latent infections in reservoir hosts. Here, we describe the genome of bovine herpesvirus 6 (BoHV-6), a

macavirus ubiquitous in healthy cattle populations. The BoHV-6 genome exhibited architecture conserved in macaviruses, including a repetitive H-DNA region and unique, 141 kilobase pair L

DNA region predicted to encode 77 genes. BoHV-6 encoded in variable genomic regions a novel complement of genes relative to other characterized macaviruses, likely contributing to distinctive aspects of BoHV-6 infection biology and host range. Most notably, …

Davenport, Elizabeth Bunting, Shawn Gray, Judith Galeota, Ivy Levan, Tracy Dubovos, Paul Shelton, Edward A. Hoover, Bruce Trindle

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy of deer, elk and moose, is the only prion disease affecting free-ranging animals. First identified in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming in 1967, new epidemic foci of the disease have since been identified in additional states, as well as two Canadian provinces and the Republic of South Korea. Identification of CWD-affected animals currently requires post-mortem analysis of brain or lymphoid tissues using immunohistochemistry (IHC) or an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), with no practical way to evaluate potential strain types or investigate the epidemiology of existing or novel foci of disease. Using …

Evidence For A Transketolase-Mediated Metabolic Checkpoint Governing Biotrophic Growth In Rice Cells By The Blast Fungus Magnaporthe Oryzae, Jessie Fernandez, Margarita Marroquin-Guzman, Richard A. Wilson

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae threatens global food security through the widespread destruction of cultivated rice. Foliar infection requires a specialized cell called an appressorium that generates turgor to force a thin penetration hypha through the rice cuticle and into the underlying epidermal cells, where the fungus grows for the first days of infection as a symptomless biotroph. Understanding what controls biotrophic growth could open new avenues for developing sustainable blast intervention programs. Here, using molecular genetics and live-cell imaging, we dismantled M. oryzae glucose-metabolizing pathways to reveal that the transketolase enzyme, encoded by TKL1, plays an essential role …
