Satyendra Nath Bose realized that there was a logical inconsistency in the derivation of Planck's radiation law since the derivation used to obtain the temperature-independent prefactor in the blackbody radiation law had been based in part on classical wave hypotheses, such as the number of degrees of freedom of the ether. Bose worked out a strictly quantum derivation by combining the quantum hypothesis with statistical mechanics to determine the number of states of each mode that would occupy a 6-dimensional phase space. Here I use the model of an extended photon to show that the temperature-independent prefactor of Planck's radiation …

Maternal Embryokines That Regulate Development Of The Bovine Preimplantation Embryo, Peter James Hansen, Anna Carolina Denicol, Kyle Bradley Dobbs
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Proper embryonic development depends upon regulatory signals from the reproductive tract called embryokines. This review uses the cow as a model to understand the developmental processes controlled by embryokines. The focus is on 3 embryokines that have been shown to increase competence of embryos to survive after transfer to recipients: CSF2, IGF1, and DKK1. Together, these molecules regulate key events required for development of the embryo to the blastocyst stage including proliferation (enhanced by IGF1), development of the inner cell mass (regulated by CSF2), control of differentiation (modified by DKK1), and inhibition of apoptosis and stress-mediated developmental arrest (IGF1 and …

Recent Advances In The Immunology And Uterine Microbiology Of Healthy Cows And Cows That Develop Uterine Disease, Klibs N. Galvao, Jose Eduardo P. Santos
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Uterine diseases are highly prevalent in dairy cows. Causes of uterine diseases are multifactorial. There is good evidence for the susceptibility of the host and for the role of pathogenic bacteria, and less evidence for the effect of the environment. Uterine and leukocyte immune response is impaired early postpartum in cows that develop uterine disease. The decrease in immune function is associated with a decrease in calcium postpartum and an increase in NEFA and BHBA. Both endometrial cells and granulosal cells possess toll-like receptors (TLR) that can recognize and mount an inflammatory response to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) such as …

Evaluation of sperm quality is important in order to understand the main biochemical processes occurring during motility of sperm, to determine the reproductive ability of fish species, and to optimize the environment for spermatozoa. Generally, once differentiated in the gonad the sperm remain there completely quiescent until they are released into an external medium. After activation, motility duration of fish spermatozoa is greatly affected by environmental factors such as pH, ion concentrations, and osmotic pressure. Investigating these factors in relation to fish sperm can help establish good activation or immobilizing media for improving artificial fertilization and preservation. This study aimed …

To study the effects of royal jelly (RJ) on performance and fatty acid profiles, 168 unsexed 8-day-old quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were assigned to 4 treatment groups. Groups were arranged as follows: control (LSD; 160 cm2/quail and no supplementation), high stocking density (HSD; 80 cm2/quail and no supplementation), HSD-RJ 250 [80 cm2/quail and 250 mg/kg body weight (BW) RJ given orally], and HSD-RJ 500 (80 cm2/quail and 500 mg/kg BW RJ given orally). Body weight gain decreased significantly in the HSD group at day 42 (P < 0.01). Feed intake (FI) and feed conversion rate (FCR) were also significantly affected in the HSD group (P < 0.01). FI and FCR were improved by both doses of RJ. Both RJ doses increased total polyunsaturated fatty acid ratios in the breast, kidney (P < 0.001), leg, and liver (P < 0.05). Total saturated fatty acid ratios in leg (P < 0.01) and kidney (P < 0.05) tissues increased in the HSD group but decreased in the livers of HSD-RJ 250 group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, RJ supplementation improved performance parameters and unsaturated fatty acid ratios in the examined quail tissues.

This study is the first to evaluate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics in cows with displaced abomasum (DA), which is an internationally recognized problem in dairy cows. Some biochemical parameters have been used for monitoring DA. However, to date, few data have been available on the blood metabolomic profile of dairy cows. Forty Holstein multiparous cows with DA (30 left, 10 right) and 10 clinically healthy Holstein multiparous cows were the subjects of the study. All the animals had similar dry matter intake. An NMR-based metabolomics approach and hematological and biochemical analyses were performed. Some changes in biochemical parameters were …

Severe Beak Deformity In Melopsittacus Undulatus Caused By Knemidocoptes Pilae, Pedro María Alarcón Elbal, Victor Jesus Carmona Salido, José Marín Sánchez Murillo, Rafael Calero Bernal, Javier Lucientes Curdi
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
An outbreak of knemidocoptic mange caused by Knemidocoptes pilae is described in caged Australian budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) in a public park in L´Eliana (Valencia, Spain). Five individuals (5 out of 70) displayed severe malformation of the beak, with the rhamphotheca, rhinotheca, and gnathotheca affected and a slight lateral deviation of the jawbone, which did not, however, impede feeding or grooming.

This study aimed to characterize the expression the GPRC5D gene in the skin of the Liaoning Cashmere goat. Initially, the GPRC5D gene sequence was subjected to bioinformatics analysis. Second, semiquantitative RT-PCR was used to detect GPRC5D gene expression in the tissues. Third, in situ hybridization was used to locate GPRC5D gene expression in the primary and secondary hair follicles. Functional site analysis showed that GPRC5D has 7 transmembrane domains. RT-PCR showed that GPRC5D was expressed only in the skin. In situ hybridization showed that GPRC5D was expressed in the inner root sheath only. We speculated that GPRC5D may regulate cashmere …

The calpastatin (CAST) gene has a major effect on muscle growth and meat tenderness after slaughter; it is located on the fifth chromosome in sheep. Blood samples were collected from 720 animals in total from Kıvırcık (KIV), Sakız (SZ), Karacabey Merino (KM), and Gökçeada (GA) sheep populations raised in West Anatolia. The PCR products were digested by the restriction endonuclease MspI. Allele frequencies for M and N alleles of the gene were found to be 0.85 and 0.15 in KIV, 0.80 and 0.20 in KM, 0.99 and 0.01 in GA, and 0.34 and 0.66 in SZ sheep, respectively. It was …

Immunohistochemical Localization Of Glutathione Peroxidase 1 Enzyme And Its Gene Expression By Rt-Pcr In The Liver Tissue Of Healthy And Diabetic Mice, Turgay Deprem, Nurhayat Gülmez
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The purpose of this study is to examine the gene expression level of glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) in the liver of healthy and diabetic mice, its localization in the tissue, and structural changes in the liver. In this study, 36 Swiss albino mice were divided into 3 groups: experimental (diabetic) (n = 15), sham (n = 15), and control (n = 6). Streptozotocin (100 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered to mice in the experimental group. While the gene expression level of GPx1 was determined using the RT-PCR method, its localization in the liver was determined using an immunohistochemical method. The GPx1 …

Pathotypic Characterization Of The Newcastle Disease Virus Isolated From Commercial Poultry In Northwest Iran, Elham Ahmadi, Seyed Ali Pourbakhsh, Malahat Ahmadi, Alireza Talebi
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Despite vaccination, outbreaks of Newcastle disease in commercial poultry flocks in northwest Iran have been regularly reported in recent years. This research was proposed in order to characterize, through a molecular approach, the genetic nature of strains of Newcastle disease virus isolated from commercial poultry flocks in northwest Iran. Ten Newcastle disease virus isolates were obtained from various districts of northwest Iran in 2010. The isolates were screened with F gene-targeting reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The amplified products of virulent strains were sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequence of the fusion protein cleavage site indicated the presence of …

Eşme District in Uşak Province has a special role in western Anatolia sheep husbandry due to its number of animals and large pastures. A genotype with the characteristics of the Kıvırcık breed has emerged and became common in the region in the last 20-30 years. This study aimed to determine the meat quality characteristics of Kıvrıcık lambs reared in the locality, which has a large market share. The study determined parameters about water and cooking loss and shear force in M. longissimus dorsi, M. longissimus thoracis, and M. semitendinosus muscles taken from the left half of lamb carcasses. Furthermore, meat …
