Dynamics, Stability, And Actuation Methods For Powered Compass Gait Walkers, Koray Kadi̇r Şafak Jan 2014

Dynamics, Stability, And Actuation Methods For Powered Compass Gait Walkers, Koray Kadi̇r Şafak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, methods to achieve actively powered walking on level ground using a simple 2-dimensional walking model (compass-gait walker) are explored. The walker consists of 2 massless legs connected at the hip joint, a point mass at the hip, and an infinitesimal point mass at the feet. The walker is actuated either by applying equal joint torques at the hip and ankle, by an impulse applied at the toe off, immediately before the heel strike, or by the combination of both. It is shown that actuating the walker by equal joint torques at the hip and ankle on level …

Frequency-Emulated Uniform Cellular Automata, Hürevren Kiliç Jan 2014

Frequency-Emulated Uniform Cellular Automata, Hürevren Kiliç

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The notion of a frequency-emulated (f-emulated) uniform cellular automata (CA) that enables the behavior emulation of some elementary CA via memory usage is introduced. An algorithm that generates f-emulated uniform CA sets is developed and an upper bound for its output size is given. It is observed that traffic rule 184 together with its 2-emulator version, which generates the behavior of the known majority rule 232, performs the density classification task perfectly. Moreover, it is possible to use a 2-emulated uniform CA for the solution of the parity problem.

Temporal Evolution Of The Water Characteristics In The Bays Along The Eastern Coast Of The Aegean Sea: Saros, İzmir, And Gökova Bays, Canan Eronat, Erdem Sayin

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The seasonal and interannual variability of the local hydrography in 3 bays (Saros, İzmir, and Gökova bays) along the eastern coast of the Aegean Sea are investigated using data sets collected from 1991 to 2010. The data cover the last major deep-water formation episodes and the Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT) relaxation period. Aegean Sea hydrology and water mass characteristics influence the water properties of the bays. The data suggest that Saros Bay (North Aegean Sea), İzmir Bay (Central Aegean Sea), and Gökova Bay (South Aegean Sea) have different physical processes and water characteristics. They have their own dynamics independent from …

Cytological Evidence For Gametophytic Self-Incompatibility In The Genus Veronica, Romain Scalone, Dirk Albach Jan 2014

Cytological Evidence For Gametophytic Self-Incompatibility In The Genus Veronica, Romain Scalone, Dirk Albach

Turkish Journal of Botany

The self-incompatibility (SI) of 3 Middle East Veronica species (V. filiformis, V. gentianoides, V. teucrium) is studied, for the first time, by pollination and pollen tube growth experiments. Cytological observations of the self-pollen tubes within the pistils permit a conclusion about the presence of a gametophytic SI system in the first 2 species. The investigated population of the third is self-compatible and confirms the facultative trait of its self-sterility. The presence of a gametophytic SI system in 2 of them suggests the putative conservation of this SI system within the genus Veronica (Plantaginaceae) and could be related to the well-known …

Plasticity And Within Plant Sex-Ratio Variation In Monoecious Emex Spinosa, Regina Berjano, Montserrat Arista, María Talavera, María Jesús Ariza, Pedro Luis Ortiz

Turkish Journal of Botany

Understanding how phenotype trait expression varies at different levels of biological organization is crucial to understanding the fundamental ecological, evolutionary, and developmental issues that contribute to adaptive plasticity. This is particularly important in plants because of their modular organization. Here, we study plasticity in flower production in response to light intensity at 3 levels of biological organization (between populations, among individuals, and within individuals) in Emex spinosa (L.) Compd., a Mediterranean amphicarpic annual. Plants exposed to high light intensity grew faster and produced more flowers than plants at low light intensity. Female flower production was the most labile trait. Within …

Chilling Tolerance Of Cicer Arietinum Lines Evaluated By Photosystem Ii And Antioxidant Activities, Özlem Turan, Yasemi̇n Ekmekçi̇

Turkish Journal of Botany

Two chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) lines (AKN 87 and AKN 290) that have different chilling susceptibilities were exposed to 2 chilling temperatures (4 and 2 °C), either cold-acclimated (10 °C) or nonacclimated (25 °C), in order to understand and compare physiological and biochemical changes at the vegetative stage. Chilling temperatures resulted in reduced growth parameters, particularly in cold-acclimated lines, whereas nonacclimated plants exhibited the lowest water contents. Cold acclimation treatment led to protective changes of increased flavonoid, proline, and antioxidant enzyme activities, mostly superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), in the lines. However, the 10 °C treatment did not …
