Responses Of Predatory Invertebrates To Seeding Density And Plantspecies Richness In Experimental Tallgrass Prairie Restorations, Kristine T. Nemec, Craig R. Allen, Stephen D. Danielson, Christopher J. Helzer

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

In recent decades, agricultural producers and non-governmental organizations have restored thousandsof hectares of former cropland in the central United States with native grasses and forbs. However, the ability of these grassland restorations to attract predatory invertebrates has not been well docu-mented, even though predators provide an important ecosystem service to agricultural producers bynaturally regulating herbivores. This study assessed the effects of plant richness and seeding density onthe richness and abundance of surface-dwelling (ants, ground beetles, and spiders) and aboveground(ladybird beetles) predatory invertebrates. In the spring of 2006, twenty-four 55 m × 55 m-plots wereplanted to six replicates in each of four …

Modification Of Plasmonic Nano Structures' Absorption And Scattering Under Evanescent Wave Illumination Above Optical Waveguides Or With The Presence Of Different Material Nano Scale Atomic Force Microscope Tips, Gazi Mostafa Huda

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

The interaction of an evanescent wave and plasmonic nanostructures are simulated in Finite Element Method. Specifically, the optical absorption cross section (Cabs) of a silver nanoparticle (AgNP) and a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) in the presence of metallic (gold) and dielectric (silicon) atomic force microscope (AFM) probes are numerically calculated in COMSOL. The system was illuminated by a transverse magnetic polarized, total internally reflected (TIR) waves or propagating surface plasmon (SP) wave. Both material nanoscale probes localize and enhance the field between the apex of the tip and the particle. Based on the absorption cross section equation the author …

Let’S Play: Understanding The Role And Significance Of Digital Gaming In Old Age, Julie A. Skalsky Brown Jan 2014

Let’S Play: Understanding The Role And Significance Of Digital Gaming In Old Age, Julie A. Skalsky Brown

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

Despite a marked increase in the use of digital games among older persons, there is insufficient research that provides insight into the gaming experiences of this population. A major demographic shift within the senior gaming market has ushered in a new perspective on the use of digital games as a tool for physical and cognitive health, and improved socialization. It is proposed that individual notions of play, which are developed over the life course, influence digital game play engagement and interaction preferences, and contribute to well-being. This study explored how self-perceptions of play over the course of the senior gamer’s …

Modeling Effective Shade To Prioritize Riparian Restoration Efforts In The Johnson Creek Watershed, Or, Brittany Sahatjian Jan 2014

Modeling Effective Shade To Prioritize Riparian Restoration Efforts In The Johnson Creek Watershed, Or, Brittany Sahatjian

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

The influence of stream temperature on the survival and reproductive success of anadromous salmonid populations has become an increasingly concerning issue in the Pacific Northwest. Enhancing the height, density and extent of riparian vegetation is widely accepted as one of the most effective strategies for reducing stream temperatures, while also providing numerous ancillary benefits. Effective shade is defined as the percentage of direct beam solar radiation attenuated and scattered by riparian vegetation before reaching the stream surface and is a commonly used criterion for choosing where to restore riparian vegetation. This project aims to prioritize sites for riparian restoration through …

Of Phds, Pirates, And The Public: Three-Dimensional Printing Technology And The Arts, Lucas S. Osborn

Texas A&M Law Review

The confluence of three-dimensional printing, three-dimensional scanning, and the Internet will erode the dividing line between the physical and the digital worlds and will bring millions of laypeople into intimate contact with the full spectrum of intellectual property laws. One of the areas most affected by 3D printers will be three-dimensional art. This Article analyzes several ways in which 3D printing technology will affect the creation, delivery, and consumption of art. Not only does 3D printing offer great promise for creative works, but it also presents a problem of piracy that may accompany the digitization of three-dimensional works. As 3D …

Understanding Whites' Colorblind Racial Attitudes : The Role Of Intergroup Anxiety And Psychological Flexibility, Alexa Hanus Jan 2014

Understanding Whites' Colorblind Racial Attitudes : The Role Of Intergroup Anxiety And Psychological Flexibility, Alexa Hanus

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Colorblind racial attitudes are described as the denial or minimization of race and racism (Neville et al., 2000), which may silence accounts of racial discrimination and lead White Americans to ignore their racial privileges, ultimately supporting and reproducing racial inequality in the US (Bonilla-Silva, 2001). Alarmingly, colorblind attitudes are the dominant racial ideology among White Americans (Lewis, 2004), and inform the way White adults talk to their children about race (Schofeild, 2007). The current study explored the development and maintenance of Whites' colorblind attitudes, using ideas from Stephan and Stephan's (1985) theory of intergroup anxiety, Helm's (1995) theory of White …

Monitoring Ligand-Induced Nucleic Acid Conformational Changes Using Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry, Bill Kenneth Redick Jan 2014

Monitoring Ligand-Induced Nucleic Acid Conformational Changes Using Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry, Bill Kenneth Redick

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Three-dimensional structures of biopolymers frequently dictate the biological role those molecules play. As such, investigation into structure of nucleic acids can provide important information pertaining to how those nucleic acids work. Many nucleic acid species, especially single-stranded RNA, fold into unique structures that allow them to function properly. Metals, and other cationic species, are often bound to the nucleic acid to make folding into the proper structure more favorable by neutralizing the negative charge on the nucleic acid imparted by the phosphate group. This investigation explores tertiary structure of nucleic acids that have been folded in the presence of ligands …

Development Of Antifouling Surfaces To Reduce Bacterial Attachment, Mary Viola Graham Jan 2014

Development Of Antifouling Surfaces To Reduce Bacterial Attachment, Mary Viola Graham

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Bacteria are exceptionally good at adhering to surfaces and forming complex structures known as biofilms. This process, known as biofouling, can cause problems for infrastructure (eg, clogging and damaging pipes), for the food industry (eg, contamination of processing surfaces and equipment, and for the medical industry (eg, contamination of indwelling medical devices). Accordingly, multiple strategies have been explored to combat biofouling, including chemical modification of surfaces, development of antibiotic coatings, and more recently, the use of engineered surface topography. When designed properly, engineered surface topographies can significantly reduce bacterial surface attachment, ultimately limiting surface colonization. In this work, we hypothesized …

The Gendering Of Space In Colonial Burma : Race, Sex, And Power On The Road To Mandalay 1888-1948, Michael Zaborowski Jan 2014

In this dissertation, I combine population genetic and demographic history analyses of autosomal, mitochondrial and Y-chromosome genetic markers with spatially explicit modeling techniques to study the biogeographic mechanisms responsible for shaping patterns of genetic diversity among chimpanzees in Cameroon and eastern Nigeria. I also describe a new software tool, TESS Ad-Mixer, that I developed early on in this study to help visualize the geographic distribution of demes recovered from population cluster analyses.

Examining The Relations Between Disgust, Fear, And Eating Disorder Symptomatology, Lisa Marie Anderson Jan 2014

Examining The Relations Between Disgust, Fear, And Eating Disorder Symptomatology, Lisa Marie Anderson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Exposure interventions for eating disorders typically identify fear as a key treatment target (i.e., fear of fat) and integrate a hierarchical list of the patient's fears into treatment. Recently, research has suggested that the disgust emotion may be equally important for exposure efficacy, as it appears to be more resistant to extinction than fear. Currently, the independent contributions of fear and disgust to eating pathology are unknown, which may limit our ability to develop and implement the most effective exposure interventions. Thus, the current study employed hierarchical multiple regression analyses to evaluate each emotion's relative contribution to eating disorder symptoms …

Regulation Of Immune Response Genes By Vitamin D In Mammary Epithelial Cells With An Emphasis On Cd14, Katrina Marie Simmons

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Vitamin D is primarily known for its role in bone health, however recently vitamin D has been identified as a potent immunomodulator. Most research studying the effects of vitamin D on immune properties have focused on immune cells. Few have evaluated how vitamin D affects the immune functions of barrier epithelial cells, such as human mammary epithelial (HME) cells, that are exposed to pathogens both locally and systemically. The goals of the studies described in this thesis were to comprehensively and mechanistically evaluate the immune effects of vitamin D metabolites, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25D), on HME cells. …

Roughened Random Forests For Binary Classification, Kuangnan Xiong Jan 2014

Roughened Random Forests For Binary Classification, Kuangnan Xiong

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Binary classification plays an important role in many decision-making processes. Random forests can build a strong ensemble classifier by combining weaker classification trees that are de-correlated. The strength and correlation among individual classification trees are the key factors that contribute to the ensemble performance of random forests. We propose roughened random forests, a new set of tools which show further improvement over random forests in binary classification. Roughened random forests modify the original dataset for each classification tree and further reduce the correlation among individual classification trees. This data modification process is composed of artificially imposing missing data that are …

Regulation Of Ty1 Retrovirus-Like Transposon Rna Localization And Translation, Ryan Joseph Palumbo Jan 2014

Regulation Of Ty1 Retrovirus-Like Transposon Rna Localization And Translation, Ryan Joseph Palumbo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Replication of the Ty1 retrovirus-like transposon of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is stringently regulated to reduce the frequency of deleterious retrotransposition events. However, under stress conditions, Ty1 retrotransposition can lead to adaptive genomic alterations. To characterize host regulation of Ty1 retrotransposition, I analyzed ribosome profiling data and showed that Ty1 RNA is efficiently translated. Moreover, the ribosome biogenesis factors BUD21, DBP7, HCR1, LOC1, MRT4, and PUF6 are required for optimal expression of the Ty1 protein Gag.

Ph Regulation And The Assessment Of Renal Injury Biomarkers In A Warm Perfusion Renal Allograft Preservation System, Aaron Meyer

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A shortage of viable kidneys available for transplantation exists today, as the number of individuals waiting for a kidney transplant continues to grow while the number of kidneys available each year for transplantation has remained stagnant. The development of technology that will allow for transplantation of organs that currently may be considered too damaged for transplant will provide access to a large number of donors who have experienced traumatic injury deaths resulting in loss of cardiac function. These potential donors account for the majority of all traumatic injury deaths in intensive care units, however their organs have experienced a degree …

Mechanisms Of Dna Synthesis And Fidelity By Y-Family Translesion And C-Family Replicative Polymerases, Purba Mukherjee Jan 2014

Mechanisms Of Dna Synthesis And Fidelity By Y-Family Translesion And C-Family Replicative Polymerases, Purba Mukherjee

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Since the discovery of the DNA polymerase by Arthur Kornberg nearly 60 years ago, there have been great advances in understanding the involvement of polymerases in replication and repair. Years of genetic, biochemical and structural studies have lead to the classification of DNA-dependent DNA polymerases into six families: A, B, C, D, X and Y. In this work, I have focussed on two different families, C and Y. Hence this work is divided into two parts. Part one discusses the studies on Y-family polymerases. All Y-family polymerases are involved in replicating past DNA lesions. The ability to tolerate unnatural nucleotides …
