Demographics And Seasonal Diet Composition Of Shovelnose Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus Platorynchus Rafinesque) In Wabash River, Vaskar Nepal
Masters Theses
Shovelnose sturgeon Schaphirhynchus platorynchus Rafinesque, one of the only sturgeon species that support a sustainable commercial harvest, are fished in a substantial caviar fishery in the lower Wabash River. However, ecological information on the population is sparse. In this thesis, I present information on the status and seasonal diet characteristics of the population. A 14-year long shovelnose sturgeon monitoring survey conducted by Illinois Department of Natural Resources shows that the population is in relatively good condition, faces low mortality rates, and has a high potential for recruitment. Study of the seasonal composition of diet suggests that shovelnose sturgeon generally get …

Personality Traits And Character Strengths As Predictors Of Well-Being, Carissa Johnsen
Personality Traits And Character Strengths As Predictors Of Well-Being, Carissa Johnsen
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of how character strengths (i.e., positive characteristics about a person that can be developed) can predict subjective well-being above and beyond personality. Although the relationship between personality and well-being is well-understood, there is little research done comparing personality and character strengths and how character strengths may provide added value in predicting subjective well-being. Thus, the present study sought to examine whether character strengths will predict subjective well-being above and beyond personality. Two-hundred and thirty seven participants responded to scales measuring each person's personality traits, character strengths, satisfaction with life, …
Exploration Of The Relationship Between Schizotypal Traits And Well-Being, James Ciulla
Exploration Of The Relationship Between Schizotypal Traits And Well-Being, James Ciulla
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the construct of schizotypy and whether or not it may have benefits within different conceptions of psychological health, or well-being. Schizotypy is a construct that emerged around the turn of the 20th century. It had historically incorporated aspects later reclassified under other areas of dysfunction, or relegated to social value judgment, and is currently the cause of some debate in the field (Acar & Sen, 2013; Carson, 2011; Farias, Underwood & Claridge, 2013; Kendler, 1985; Tsakanikos & Claridge, 2005; Vollema & van den Bosch, 1995). There has been little research done on …
Substance Abuse In Older Adults: An Exploratory Study, Rachael Hawn
Substance Abuse In Older Adults: An Exploratory Study, Rachael Hawn
Masters Theses
The increasing number of older adults in the United States, due in part to the Baby Boomer generation, means that there is also an increase in the number of older adults dealing with substance abuse problems. The compounded effects of multiple legal medications with alcohol, illicit drugs, or abused prescription drugs on the withdrawal process are likely to make delineating between legitimate medication side effects and withdrawal symptoms incredibly difficult for medical professionals working with older adults. With the average older adult legally using 17 medications from nine different medical professionals, the physical effects of substance abuse might easily go …
Differences In Mental Health Treatment Recommendations For Older And Younger Adults, Michelle M. Smith
Differences In Mental Health Treatment Recommendations For Older And Younger Adults, Michelle M. Smith
Masters Theses
Failure to meet geriatric mental health needs is increasingly problematic. Research indicates that the problem is not simply a matter of insufficient numbers of mental health practitioners (MHPs), but also ageist attitudes and lack of knowledge about and training with older adults. The current study reviews the literature regarding knowledge about older people, education and training that mental health professionals receive, and the attitudes that are held by mental health professionals. The study also assessed for differences in treatment recommendations that MHP made for older versus younger clients, investigated whether MHP knowledge about the mental health of older adults, attitudes …
Aspects Of The Trophic Ecology Of An Invertivorous Snake Community, Meagan Amanda Thomas
Aspects Of The Trophic Ecology Of An Invertivorous Snake Community, Meagan Amanda Thomas
Masters Theses
Understanding the significance of trophic links has been of interest to ecologists for decades, likely because food web studies have the potential to reveal a considerable amount of information in the fields of ecosystem and community ecology. Despite the intrinsic benefits that come from elucidating food web structures, doing so is often problematic because of the complex and dynamic nature of ecological communities. The dietary ecology of small-bodied invertivorous snakes remains relatively understudied compared to other snake species. Many of these species are abundant throughout their range, making them ideal organisms for studying community-level questions. I employed a combination of …
Wastewater Influent And Effluent Concentrations Of 17 Beta-Estradiol: A Study Of The Influence Of A University Community And The Risk To Environmental Health, Kyle Heffron
Masters Theses
The concentration of 17β-estradiol (E2) was measured through stages of wastewater treatment at a central Illinois wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). E2 concentration was quantified using a competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The concentration of E2 was compared with demographic effects of a university, physical parameters of the wastewater (dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature) and daily influent and effluent flow rates. Effluent concentrations ranged from 0 to 25.3 ng L-1 with an average discharge of 3.6 ng L-1. E2 concentration was shown to increase at the start of each university semester, however, this trend was not observed …
Examining The Nutritional Requirements Of Acidophilic Archaea "Ferroplasma Acidarmanus" Strain Fer1, Yudong Qu
Examining The Nutritional Requirements Of Acidophilic Archaea "Ferroplasma Acidarmanus" Strain Fer1, Yudong Qu
Masters Theses
Ferroplasma acidarmanus strain fer1 (fer1) is an archaeal microaerophilic acidophile (pH 0 to pH 3) with a chemolithotrophic metabolism. As an efficient consumer of sulfate, fer1 plays an important role in the biogeochemical process of pyrite dissolution at acidic site. Confirming the genomic prediction of metabolic gene functions in this organism requires functional assays, which cannot be carried out until a defined medium is obtained. The objective of the current study was to replace the 0.1% (w/v) yeast extract component in the growth medium, mfer, with defined components for carbon, nitrogen, and vitamin needs. In order to replace the 0.1% …
The Effects Of 1, 3, & 7 Trisubstituted And 8-Cyclopentyl Alkylxanthines On Respiration In Newborn Rats, Nathan Creel Davidson
The Effects Of 1, 3, & 7 Trisubstituted And 8-Cyclopentyl Alkylxanthines On Respiration In Newborn Rats, Nathan Creel Davidson
Masters Theses
Methylxanthines have been shown to be promising respiratory stimulants in newborns suffering from recurrent apnea. The respiratory stimulant effects of methylxanthines are most likely due to their antagonism of adenosine receptors. These drugs have been shown to stimulate respiration in newborn rats in doses in excess of 10 mg/kg body weight. Structure-activity studies have shown that methylxanthines not only differ in the antagonism of A1 and A2 adenosine receptors but also, as a consequence of their different chemical structures, differ in potency as respiratory stimulants. To assess this, two potent A1 adenosine receptor antagonists, 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX) and …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The molecular characteristics of aerosol organic matter (OM) determines to a large extent its impacts on the atmospheric radiative budget and ecosystem function in terrestrial and aquatic environments, yet the OM molecular details of aerosols from different sources are not well established. Aerosol particulate samples with North American-influenced, North African-influenced, and marine (minimal recent continental influence) air mass back trajectories were collected as part of the 2011 trans-North Atlantic US GEOTRACES cruise and analyzed for their water soluble OM (WSOM) molecular characteristics using electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Principal component analysis (PCA) separated the samples into …
Where Does Electronic Aggression Fit?: A Comparison Of Dimensional And Categorical Models Of Adolescent Aggression, Krista R. Mehari
Where Does Electronic Aggression Fit?: A Comparison Of Dimensional And Categorical Models Of Adolescent Aggression, Krista R. Mehari
Theses and Dissertations
Electronic aggression is a rapidly growing focus of research, but it lacks a unifying theoretical framework that is necessary to advance the field. The lack of a theoretical framework has led to inconsistencies in measurement of electronic aggression, making it difficult to draw conclusions across studies. In general, researchers have assumed that electronic aggression constitutes a new form of aggression, a counterpart to physical, verbal, and relational aggression, due to unique features surrounding the perpetration of electronic aggression. Furthermore, researchers have treated electronic aggression as a categorical variable based on the assumption that “cyberbullies” constitute a distinct group of adolescents. …

Treatment-Induced Breast Cancer Dormancy And Relapse, Rebecca Keim
Treatment-Induced Breast Cancer Dormancy And Relapse, Rebecca Keim
Theses and Dissertations
When breast tumor cells encounter stress due to cancer therapies, they may enter a dormant state, escaping from treatment-induced apoptosis. Dormant cells may eventually regain proliferative capabilities and cause recurrent metastatic disease, which is the leading cause of mortality in breast cancer patients. We sought to determine if a high dose of radiation therapy (RT) or combined chemo-immunotherapy, with and without the blockade of autophagy by chloroquine (CQ), could overcome treatment-induced tumor dormancy or relapse. We found that autophagy contributes in part to treatment-induced tumor dormancy. We also found that three therapeutic strategies were successful in inhibiting or preventing tumor …

Fathering And Child Maltreatment: A Grounded Theory Study, Jennifer Shadik
Theses and Dissertations
Literature related to fathers and child physical abuse and neglect is lacking (Guterman & Lee, 2005; Lee, Bellamy, & Guterman, 2009). The purpose of this study was to better understand several pertinent aspects of fathering related to maltreatment. Three research questions were examined: 1.What are the attitudes, behaviors and contexts of fathers who have abused or neglected a child that relate to maltreatment? 2. What are the resources and capacities of these fathers which could be capitalized on? 3. How does goodness-of-fit or a poor fit between the father and child impact the parenting relationships of these fathers? Fifteen fathers …
Present With An Uncertain Future: Dispositional Mindfulness, Covariation Bias, And Event-Related Potential Responses To Emotional Stimuli In Uncertain Contexts, Robert J. Goodman
Present With An Uncertain Future: Dispositional Mindfulness, Covariation Bias, And Event-Related Potential Responses To Emotional Stimuli In Uncertain Contexts, Robert J. Goodman
Theses and Dissertations
Uncertainty represents a robust threat that can amplify aversive experiences and exaggerate negative expectations about uncertain future outcomes. Mindfulness – an open and receptive attention to present moment experiences -- has been shown to facilitate adaptive regulation when faced with a variety of distinct emotional threats. Reduced experiential avoidance and equanimity in the face of unpleasant emotional experiences have been theorized as central to these emotional regulatory benefits. The present study explored whether dispositional mindfulness would promote adaptive responses to uncertainty during the anticipation of, and after exposure to emotional stimuli, as indicated by self-reports and neural (event-related potential) markers …
Epigenetic Alterations Of Toll-Like Receptors By Tet2 In Spontaneous Preterm Labor, Anuja Chumble
Epigenetic Alterations Of Toll-Like Receptors By Tet2 In Spontaneous Preterm Labor, Anuja Chumble
Theses and Dissertations
Increasing evidence implicates the presence of bacteria in intrauterine tissues as an important risk factor for spontaneous preterm labor. Epigenetic alterations of innate immunity genes may increase the mother’s sensitivity to subclinical levels of bacteria. This study examined the presence of TET2, TLR-2, and TLR-9 in intrauterine tissue, and evaluated whether epigenetic alterations of these genes, as well as IL-8, changed their expression in human decidual tissue and a macrophage cell culture. Immunohistochemicalstaining was used to detect the presence of these proteins in intrauterine tissue. Gene expression changes were evaluated in stimulated monocytes and macrophages. Fluorescence immunohistochemistry was used to …
Application Of Marginal Structural Models In Pharmacoepidemiologic Studies, Shibing Yang
Application Of Marginal Structural Models In Pharmacoepidemiologic Studies, Shibing Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Inverse-probability-of-treatment-weighted estimation (IPTW) of marginal structural models was proposed to adjust for time-varying confounders that are influenced by prior treatment use. It is unknown whether pharmacoepidemiologic studies that applied IPTW conformed to the recommendations proposed by methodological studies. In addition, no previous study has compared the performance of different analytic strategies adopted in IPTW analyses. Objectives: This project aims 1) to review the reporting practice of pharmacoepidemiologic studies that applied IPTW, 2) to compare the validity and precision of several approaches to constructing weight, 3) to use IPTW to estimate the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin in treating osteoarthritis. …

Evidence For Permafrost Thaw And Transport From An Alaskan North Slope Watershed, Kathryn M. Schreiner, Thomas S. Bianchi, Brad E. Rosenheim
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Burial of organic carbon (OC) in marine sediments is one of the most important linkages between the short-term biologic carbon cycle and the long-term geologic carbon cycle. Yet much is still unknown about the fate of terrigenous OC in marine coastal margins. Here the delivery of particulate OC (POC) to the Colville River deltaic region in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea by particulates of varying densities is studied through the use of ramped temperature pyrolysis and radiocarbon analyses. The Colville River is the largest river in North America whose watershed is underlain completely by high Arctic permafrost tundra. A variety of …
Pursuing The Roles Of Non-Invasive Biomarkers In Chronic Renal Allograft Dysfunction, Mba Uzoma U. Mba
Pursuing The Roles Of Non-Invasive Biomarkers In Chronic Renal Allograft Dysfunction, Mba Uzoma U. Mba
Theses and Dissertations
Kidney failure affects over 600,000 people in the United States with over 100,000 new cases of kidney failure diagnosed every year. Chronic allograft dysfunction (CAD), a disease state highlighted by a decreased eGFR and a histo-pathological diagnosis interstitial fibrosis and renal tubular atrophy, has emerged as one of the leading causes of kidney transplantation. Gene expression analysis can identify reproducible patterns of disease in ribonucleic acid (RNA) expression and may provide insights into the quality of kidney donations heretofore overlooked by current clinical analytical methods. Additionally, genetic expression profiles can be obtained from patient blood or urine samples, diminishing the …
Identification Of Micro-Rnas And Their Messenger Rna Targets In Prostate Cancer And Biological Fluids, Kanika Sharma
Identification Of Micro-Rnas And Their Messenger Rna Targets In Prostate Cancer And Biological Fluids, Kanika Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in the United States that affects men today. To better treat this disease accurate biomarkers and successful therapeutic treatments are needed. A novel approach to understand the mechanisms behind prostate cancer tumor formation lies in identifying dysregulated micro-RNAs (miRNAs), which are a class of small (18-24 nucleotides) non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression posttranscriptionally by either inhibiting protein synthesis or signaling messenger-RNA for degradation. Multiple miRNAs were discovered in our highly tumorigenic and metastatic prostate cancer progression model M12 cell line compared to its weakly tumorigenic P69 parental cell line. Various analyses …
Characterization Of Putative Porphyromonas Gingivalis Rna-Binding Proteins, Holly Dwyer
Characterization Of Putative Porphyromonas Gingivalis Rna-Binding Proteins, Holly Dwyer
Theses and Dissertations
Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is a gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium recognized as a major player in progression of periodontal disease. P. gingivalis survives in the oral cavity while being exposed to dynamic environmental conditions such as pH, temperature, nutrient availability and host immune responses such as oxygen tension and nitrosative stress. Survival and pathogenesis of P. gingivalis in the oral cavity require mechanisms to regulate gene expression in response to the extracellular signals. Little is known about the regulatory mechanisms of P. gingivalis in the oral cavity, so it is important to investigate and characterize these regulatory mechanisms. Adaptation to environmental …
