Study Of The Formation And Control Of Disinfection By-Products Originating From A Surface Water Supply On The Volcanic Island Of Guam, Erica Laberge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three oxidants have been evaluated for use as alternative chemical pretreatments for Fena Lake, a surface water that supplies the U.S. Navy's Public Water System (PWS) on the volcanic island of Guam. The study consisted of two investigative components. The first and primary component included a bench-scale evaluation to study the effects of different pre-oxidant chemicals on the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs). The second and ancillary component included a series of water treatment and distribution system management studies that analyzed DBP formation within the treatment plant and water distribution system. The goal of this research was to reduce …

An Unsupervised Consensus Control Chart Pattern Recognition Framework, Siavash Haghtalab Jan 2014

An Unsupervised Consensus Control Chart Pattern Recognition Framework, Siavash Haghtalab

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Early identification and detection of abnormal time series patterns is vital for a number of manufacturing. Slide shifts and alterations of time series patterns might be indicative of some anomaly in the production process, such as machinery malfunction. Usually due to the continuous flow of data monitoring of manufacturing processes requires automated Control Chart Pattern Recognition(CCPR) algorithms. The majority of CCPR literature consists of supervised classification algorithms. Less studies consider unsupervised versions of the problem. Despite the profound advantage of unsupervised methodology for less manual data labeling their use is limited due to the fact that their performance is not …

Automatic Detection Of Brain Functional Disorder Using Imaging Data, Soumyabrata Dey Jan 2014

Automatic Detection Of Brain Functional Disorder Using Imaging Data, Soumyabrata Dey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is getting a lot of attention mainly for two reasons. First, it is one of the most commonly found childhood behavioral disorders. Around 5-10% of the children all over the world are diagnosed with ADHD. Second, the root cause of the problem is still unknown and therefore no biological measure exists to diagnose ADHD. Instead, doctors need to diagnose it based on the clinical symptoms, such as inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, which are all subjective. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data has become a popular tool to understand the functioning of the brain such …

Nano-Pipette As Nanoparticle Analyzer And Capillary Gated Ion Transistor, Yauheni Rudzevich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to precisely count inorganic and organic nanoparticles and to measure their size distribution plays a major role in various applications such as drug delivery, nanoparticles counting, and many others. In this work I present a simple resistive pulse method that allows translocations, counting, and measuring the size and velocity distribution of silica nanoparticles and liposomes with diameters from 50 nm to 250 nm. This technique is based on the Coulter counter technique, but has nanometer size pores. It was found that ionic current drops when nanoparticles enter the nanopore of a pulled micropipette, producing a clear translocation signal. …

A Spatial Analysis Of Chachapoya Mortuary Practices At La Petaca, Chachapoyas, Peru, Lori Epstein Jan 2014

A Spatial Analysis Of Chachapoya Mortuary Practices At La Petaca, Chachapoyas, Peru, Lori Epstein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diversity of Chachapoya mortuary practices is not well understood archaeologically, even though the region has received some attention for the monumental constructions and visually striking mortuary complexes located high on open cliff faces. This may be due to the difficult accessibility and often poor state of preservation consistent with many Chachapoya mortuary and occupation sites. This thesis reconstructs mortuary practices at La Petaca in the Chachapoyas region of Peru, applying paleodemographic and GIS methodological approaches to facilitate and improve the bioarchaeological study of commingled skeletal remains in an open, disturbed communal funerary context. Research focused on SUP CF-01, a natural …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hexavalent chromium is an extremely carcinogenic chemical that has been widely produced in the United States. This has led to major waste contamination and pollution throughout the country. According to the Environmental Working Group Hexavalent chromium has been found in 89% of city tap water. Most people believe they are safe using regular home filter systems however that is not true. A more expensive ion exchange water treatment unit is required. Therefore to protect yourselves from this carcinogenic metal a reliable test is required. In this study we have developed a Zinc Sulfide Manganese doped Quantum Rod technology to detect …

Serendipitous Data Following A Severe Windstorm In An Old-Growth Pine Stand, D. C. Bragg, J. D. Riddle

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Reliable dimensional data for old-growth pine-dominated forests in the Gulf Coastal Plain of Arkansas are hard to find, but sometimes unfortunate circumstances provide good opportunities to acquire this information. On July 11, 2013, a severe thunderstorm with high winds struck the Levi Wilcoxon Demonstration Forest (LWDF) near Hamburg, Arkansas. This storm uprooted or snapped dozens of large pines and hardwoods and provided an opportunity to more closely inspect these rare specimens. For instance, the largest tree killed in this event, a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), was 105 cm in diameter at breast height, 39.3 m tall, and if the tree …

Romantic Relationship Stages And Social Networking Sites: Uncertainty Reduction Strategies And Perceived Relational Norms On Facebook, Jesse Fox, Courtney Anderegg

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

Due to their pervasiveness and unique affordances, social media play a distinct role in the development of modern romantic relationships. This study examines how a social networking site is used for information seeking about a potential or current romantic partner. In a survey, Facebook users (N= 517) were presented with Facebook behaviors categorized as passive (e.g., reading a partner’s profile), active (e.g., ‘‘friending’’ a common third party), or interactive (e.g., commenting on the partner’s wall) uncertainty reduction strategies. Participants reported how normative they perceived these behaviors to be during four possible stages of relationship development (before meeting face-to-face, after meeting …

The Interplay Of Environmental Stressors On The Life History Traits In Daphnia Lumholtzi, Deirdre Leonard-Whittington Jan 2014

The Interplay Of Environmental Stressors On The Life History Traits In Daphnia Lumholtzi, Deirdre Leonard-Whittington

Biology Theses - Archive

In natural environments, organisms face multiple stressors that threaten their persistence. Aquatic organisms respond to a change in environmental conditions by adaptively modifying the expression of traits (i.e., phenotypic plasticity). Yet, our understanding of the interactive effects of multiple simultaneous stressors on the fitness of organisms is currently limited. This is because previous research has typically focused on the influence of environmental stressors in isolation thus ignoring the impacts that multiple variables may have on an organismal fitness. Here, I assessed the interactive effects of predator cues (Chaoborus) and low food quality (Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii) on key life-history traits in the …

New Methods For Trace Analysis Of Iodine And Perchlorate In Biological Fluids, Charles Phillip Shelor Jan 2014

New Methods For Trace Analysis Of Iodine And Perchlorate In Biological Fluids, Charles Phillip Shelor

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Iodine is an essential element necessary for the production of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. These hormones are necessary for metabolism and are especially important for brain development in infants and young children. Iodine is transported into the thyroid by the sodium iodide symporter. Perchlorate is known to inhibit iodine uptake into the thyroid by binding to the sodium iodide symporter, thus acting as a potential neurotoxicant for developing children. The research in this dissertation consists of two goals. The primary is the development of novel methods for measuring iodine and perchlorate and the second is performing analyses to determine …

We develop and validate a high-resolution three-dimensional model of light and air temperature for a tropical forest interior in Hawaii along an elevation gradient varying greatly in structure but maintaining a consistent species composition. Our microclimate models integrate high-resolution airborne waveform light detection and ranging data (LiDAR) and hyperspectral imagery with detailed microclimate measurements. We then use modeled microclimate and forest structural and compositional variables to explain variation in spatially explicit measurements of leaf traits, including gas exchange and structure. Our results highlight the importance of: (1) species differences in leaf traits, with species explaining up to 65% of the …

Effects Of Organic And Conventional Agricultural Practices On Soil Microbial Communities And Molecular Detection Of Soil Borne Disease, Holli K. Milner Jan 2014

Effects Of Organic And Conventional Agricultural Practices On Soil Microbial Communities And Molecular Detection Of Soil Borne Disease, Holli K. Milner

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Agricultural practices affect soil microbial communities and health through the input of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and cycling of crop rotation. By examining the microbial community structure, we analyzed how microbial species respond to the environment that individual farms create. Early detection of soil borne disease is essential for agricultural success. However, monitoring incidence of disease based on plant growth response to pathogenic inoculation may not reveal the amount of pathogenic DNA in soil. A comparative study of tomato production systems was conducted by analysis of soil microbial community structure from four farms in Southeast Georgia for the years 2012 and …

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Wing polymorphism is a powerful model for examining many aspects of adaptation. The wing dimorphic cricket species, Gryllus firmus, consists of a long-winged morph with functional flight muscles that is capable of flight, and two flightless morphs. One (obligately) flightless morph emerges as an adult with vestigial wings and vestigial flight muscles. The other (plastic) flightless morph emerges with fully-developed wings but later in adulthood histolyzes its flight muscles. Importantly both flightless morphs have substantially increased reproductive output relative to the flight-capable morph. Much is known about the physiological and biochemical differences between the morphs with respect to adaptations …

Plant Mediated Effects Of Earthworms On Aphid Dynamics, Nawzad Kadir

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The individual and combined effects of the endogeic and epigeic groups of earthworms on the growth of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa), and on the subsequent growth and development of the generalist sap-sucking herbivore Myzus persicae were determined in separate pot experiments. Many previous studies have investigated the relationship between soil biodiversity and aboveground plants, but few researches have considered the indirect interaction between soil biota and above-ground aphids. In this study the individual effects of Aporrectodea rosea and Allolobophora chlorotica and the combined effects of A. rosea and A. chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa and Satchellius mammalis, A. chlorotica and S. mammalis, …

Spatial Distribution Of Soil Insects In Grassland, Karzan D.Ahmed Jan 2014

Spatial Distribution Of Soil Insects In Grassland, Karzan D.Ahmed

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Recently, there has been interest in the study of soil biodiversity and its functional role in agricultural grassland due to the need to develop management strategies for soil biota to improve ecosystem self-regulation. In the UK, grasslands provide a habitat for several subterranean insect taxa some of which are pests - leatherjackets (larvae of Tipulidae: Diptera) and wireworms (larvae of Elateridae:Coleoptera). To provide an appropriate method of pest management, a systematic sampling of agricultural grassland over different sampling scales is crucial in order to understand their population distribution and distribution patterns. The spatial distribution and distribution patterns of soil insects …

Antibacterial Activity Of Organic Acids And An Aqueous Lime-Peel Extract Against Selected Foodborne Pathogens, Haider Naji Kazim Al-Khanaq Jan 2014

Antibacterial Activity Of Organic Acids And An Aqueous Lime-Peel Extract Against Selected Foodborne Pathogens, Haider Naji Kazim Al-Khanaq

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Food of animal origin contaminated with food-borne pathogens still concerns the public and food experts due to its harm toward public health. Using organic acids is one of the most important interventions for controlling the microbiological safety and quality of food and has been widely used. An increase of bacterial acid resistant species gave the motivation to find an alternative way to control foodborne pathogens in meat. Limited experimental studies have investigated the antibacterial activity of organic acids and an aqueous lime-peel extract combination on chicken meat against foodborne pathogens. The inhibitory effects of citric, propionic, acetic and lactic acid …
