Review On The Application Of Modified Iron Oxides As Heterogeneous Catalysts In Fenton Reaction, S.R. Pouran, Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman, Wan Mohd Ashri Wan Daud
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Heterogeneous Fenton reaction is an advanced oxidation process which has gained wide spread acceptance for higher removal efficiency of recalcitrant organic contaminants under wide range of pH compared to homogeneous reactions. Conventionally, iron oxides are used as heterogeneous catalysts for Fenton oxidation system because of their abundance, easy separation and lower cost. This paper reviews the substitution of iron in an iron oxide with other transition metals as a mean to improve the properties of the iron oxide towards higher performance for contaminant degradation. Several studies have reported enhanced performance resulted from this substitution based on two possible mechanisms. First …

The objective of this study was to evaluate conventional (CONV) and natural (NAT) beef production systems from annual pasture through finishing through grazing. Beef steers (n = 180, initial BW = 250 ± 19 kg) were assigned randomly to 2 treatments in the pasture phase. Steers were implanted with 40 mg of trenbolone acetate (TBA), 8 mg estradiol, and 29 mg tylosin tartrate (CONV), or received no implant (NAT). Steers on the 2 treatments grazed wheat or cereal rye for 109 d. Conventional steers had an 18.5% improvement in ADG (1.22 vs. 1.03 kg/d, P < 0.01) and a heavier final BW (385 vs. 366 kg, P < 0.01) compared with NAT steers. Following the pasture phase, steers (n = 160 steers, 5 steers/pen, 8 pens/treatment) were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial in the feedlot phase. Production system (NAT vs. CONV) was maintained from the pasture phase, and the second factor was 7 vs. 12% low-quality roughage (DM basis, LOW vs. HIGH). During finishing, CONV steers were given 120 mg of TBA and 24 mg estradiol at processing, fed monensin and tylosin, and fed zilpaterol hydrochloride for the last 20 d of the experiment. There were no program × roughage level interactions (P > 0.07). The CONV steers ate …

Western Immunoblotting In Avian Shell Gland Sample Immunoblotting Methods1, K.K. Hansen, R.J. Kittok, Gautam Sarath, Mary M. Beck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Avian shell gland tissue was subjected to Western blot analysis using anti-human estrogen receptor- α antibody H222. Initial attempts to obtain consistent, high-quality blots were unsuccessful because, as it turned out, excessive lipid in tissue preparations interfered with protein separation. Incremental additions of acetone eventually proved to be the critical step in solubilizing lipids and allowing consistent separation of bands on gels. A detailed description of the methodology is presented.

The African Conception Of Death: A Cultural Implication, Lesiba Baloyi, Molebogeng Makobe-Rabothata
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
From an African perspective death is a natural transition from the visible to the invisible spiritual ontology where the spirit, the essence of the person, is not destroyed but moves to live in the spirit ancestors’ realm dead. It signifies an inextricable spiritual connection between the visible and invisible worlds. This chapter focuses on how traditional Africans conceive and deal with the bereavement process. We adopt the African worldview and philosophy as our framework. We dispute the often held view in mainstream psychology that behavior, in this case the concept of death and the bereavement processes have universal applicability, articulation, …
High Prevalence Of Dissociative Amnesia And Related Disorders In Immigrated People, Angelica Staniloiu, Hans J. Markowitsch
High Prevalence Of Dissociative Amnesia And Related Disorders In Immigrated People, Angelica Staniloiu, Hans J. Markowitsch
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Across various cultures, dissociative amnesic disorders have been shown to be triggered by psychological stress or trauma. In immigrant populations, stressful experiences can arise during pre-emigration, migration or post-migration phase. Preliminary data suggest that stresses related to various phases of migration and acculturation could trigger dissociative amnesic disorders via a dysregulation of hormonal stress responses. These findings are highly relevant in the era of increased globalization and call for culturally sensitive approaches, in order to accurately diagnose and optimally manage these conditions in the future.

Evaluation Of Three Herbicide Resistance Genes For Use In Genetic Transformations And For Potential Crop Protection In Algae Production, Andrew J. Bruggeman, Daniel Kuehler, Donald P. Weeks
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Genes conferring resistance to the herbicides glyphosate, oxyfluorfen and norflurazon were developed and tested for use as dominant selectable markers in genetic transformation of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and as potential tools for the protection of commercial-scale algal production facilities against contamination by organisms sensitive to these broad-spectrum herbicides. A synthetic glyphosate acetyltransferase (GAT) gene, when fitted with a strong Chlamydomonas promoter, conferred a 2.79-fold increase in tolerance to the EPSPS inhibitor, glyphosate, in transgenic cells compared with progenitor WT cells. A mutant Chlamydomonas protoporphyrinogen oxidase (protox, PPO) gene previously shown to produce an enzyme insensitive to PPO-inhibiting herbicides, when genetically engineered, …

A Model Of The Effect Of Uncertainty On The C Elegans L2/L2d Decision, Leon Avery
Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations
Abstract
At the end of the first larval stage, the C elegans larva chooses between two developmental pathways, an L2 committed to reproductive development and an L2d, which has the option of undergoing reproductive development or entering the dauer diapause. I develop a quantitative model of this choice using mathematical tools developed for pricing financial options. The model predicts that the optimal decision must take into account not only the expected potential for reproductive growth, but also the uncertainty in that expected potential. Because the L2d has more flexibility than the L2, it is favored in unpredictable environments. I estimate …

Purpose: Extracellular proteins are easily accessible, which presents a subproteome of molecular targets that have high diagnostic and therapeutic potential. Efforts have been made to catalog the cardiac extracellular matridome and analyze the topology of identified proteins for the design of therapeutic targets. Although many bioinformatics tools have been developed to predict protein topology, topology has been experimentally validated for only a very small portion of membrane proteins. The aim of this study was to use a glycoproteomics and MS approach to identify glycoproteins in the extracellular matridome of the infarcted left ventricle (LV) and provide experimental evidence for topological …
