An Implementation Plan For Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment, Mary Jean Dunn Jan 2014

An Implementation Plan For Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment, Mary Jean Dunn

Theses and Graduate Projects

Recovery from substance abuse or mental illness can be a long and difficult process. lndividuals attempting to recover from both issues face an even more complex road to healing. Research shows that treatment models, which address both illnesses simultaneously, in the same setting, have the best success. Treatment models that address both issues at once are called Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment (IDDT). There are a number of IDDT models around the country and Minnesota has recently finalized its framework for IDDT certification. This paper examines the most corlmonly used components of IDDT models and will study the process of implementation …

Healthy Choice, Healthy Life, Dawn M. Sanderman

Theses and Graduate Projects

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, unhealthy eating and inactivity cause any where from 310,000 to 580,000 deaths every year. How and what a child eats today will have a significant impact on his/her health throughout adolescence and adulthood. Consuming nutritious foods helps children grow, develop, do well academically and also prevents health issues, such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, nutrient deficiencies and poor bone health. A project to empower middle school children to make healthy food choices was designed. An after school educational “Health Fair” was created using the theoretical framework of Watson’s Theory of …

Violence Prevention In Schools: Safety & Security Measures, Timber L. Day Jan 2014

Violence Prevention In Schools: Safety & Security Measures, Timber L. Day

Theses and Graduate Projects

Media broadcasts of rampage school shootings can raise anxiety for parents, school officials and students. Violence prevention in schools is a national priority. It's time to take a closer look at what can be done to make schools safer. The results indicate that heightening school security and implementing zero tolerance policies are not the solution to the problem. Parent psycho-education, cognitive therapy, relaxation, self- monitoring and social skills training are more effective.

Parents' Perspectives On A Problem-Solving Approach In An Early Childhood Setting, Lisa Marie Hanson

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study attempts to gain insight into parent's perspectives on child- centered problem -solving skills, specifically the Thomas Gordon's Parent and Teacher Effectiveness Training Model. This is just one of the models currently being used across early childhood schools. When conflict arises in the classroom teachers are trained to guide the students through the problem solving process on a daily basis. This model is A Problem Solving Approach. The Problem Solving Approach is the model I interviewed parents of preschoolers in the Northwest Learning Center about. Through qualitative methods using narrative and descriptive approaches, this study investigated parents' perspectives on …

Mother Of A New World? Stereotypical Representations Of Black Women In Three Postapocalyptic Films, Karima K. Jeffrey Jan 2014

Mother Of A New World? Stereotypical Representations Of Black Women In Three Postapocalyptic Films, Karima K. Jeffrey

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

This essay explores three cinematic representations of Black matriarchs who play prophetic roles in redeeming humanity in the midst of apocalyptic change: Ika (Quest for Fire), Kee (Children of Men), and The Oracle (The Matrix trilogy). Not only do these courageous women resist the politics of domination, rebelling against a dying status quo, but they "give birth" to the leaders needed to rebuild a world in chaos and decay. One film ends with a pregnant woman rubbing her belly as she stands on the precipice of evolutionary change; another positions a mother and newborn adrift, waiting to be found by …

Threads Of Feeling: Embroidering Craftivism To Protest The Disappearances And Deaths In The “War On Drugs” In Mexico, Maureen Daly Goggin

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Since 2006, at least 130,000 men, women, and children have been killed and another 27,000 have disappeared in the “War on Drugs” in Mexico. This violence affects all “socio-economic levels [who are being] plagued by kidnapping, extortion and murder.” Many connected to those who have gone missing or died have been demanding that authorities locate their loved ones. Frustrated with the lack of action, a Mexican activist group of artists called Fuentes Rojas Red Fountains came together in January 2011 to “raise the visibility for the victims of the US-Mexico Drug War” by, among other things, dying fountains red. Later …

Intergenerational Transmission Of Emotion Dysregulation Through Parental Invalidation Of Emotions: Implications For Adolescent Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors, Kelly E. Buckholdt, Gilbert R. Parra, Lisa Jobe-Shields

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

We examined parent emotion dysregulation as part of a model of family emotion-related processes and adolescent psychopathology. Participants were 80 parent– adolescent dyads (mean age = 13.6; 79 % African-American and 17 % Caucasian) with diverse family composition and socioeconomic status. Parent and adolescent dyads self-reported on their emotion regulation difficulties and adolescents reported on their perceptions of parent invalidation (i.e., punishment and neglect) of emotions and their own internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Results showed that parents who reported higher levels of emotion dysregulation tended to invalidate their adolescent’s emotional expressions more often, which in turn related to higher levels …

Balancing Preservation And Promotion Of Natural Resources: A Case Study Of Newaygo County, Michigan, Jeffrey Koch Jan 2014

Balancing Preservation And Promotion Of Natural Resources: A Case Study Of Newaygo County, Michigan, Jeffrey Koch

Student Research – Stevenson Center

Natural resource management (NRM) involves a multitude of levels and interests. Options for sustainable management must involve all stakeholders and balance levels of decision-makers, whether local, regional, or national. No one-size-fits-all approach applies to NRM; instead, co-management of resources and multi-stakeholder collaborations assist in achieving sustainable solutions, given the multiple interest groups involved in the commons. Through good governance, flexibility to change, and community engagement efforts, NRM has a better chance for success and sustainability.

Clearly, natural resources cross governmental boundaries and jurisdictions, and NRM strategies must compensate for this dynamic. The region of West Michigan contains a wealth of …

Test-Based Accountability Systems: Concerns For Indiana’S Multilingual Learners And Their Teachers, Kathryn Brooks, Brooke Kandel-Cisco Jan 2014

Test-Based Accountability Systems: Concerns For Indiana’S Multilingual Learners And Their Teachers, Kathryn Brooks, Brooke Kandel-Cisco

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

Indiana’s current test-based accountability system grew, in part, out of decades of federal-level educational reform initiatives. This article reviews the history of Indiana’s test-based accountability system for schools and details how the system calculates evaluative ratings for Indiana teachers and schools. Additionally, the article analyzes how the Indiana accountability system contradicts what is known about appropriate measurement of English language learners and lists psychometric and validity concerns such as valid assessment, non-random assignment, norming groups, and ceiling/bottom effects. This article calls for a system in which multiple assessments offer rich data for school and teacher evaluations.

Size, Shape And Spatial Arrangement Of Mega-Scale Glacial Lineations From A Large And Diverse Dataset, Matteo Spagnolo, Chris D. Clark, Jeremy C. Ely, Chris R. Stokes, John B. Anderson, Karin Andreassen, Alastair G. C. Graham, Edward C. King

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Mega-scale glacial lineations (MSGLs) are a characteristic landform on ice stream beds. Solving the puzzle of their formation is key to understanding how ice interacts with its bed and how this, in turn, influences the dynamics of ice streams. However, a comprehensive and detailed characterization of this landform's size, shape and spatial arrangement, which might serve to test and refine formational theories, is largely lacking. This paper presents a detailed morphometric analysis and comparison of 4043 MSGLs from eight palaeo-ice stream settings: three offshore (Norway and Antarctica), four onshore (Canada), and one from under a modern ice stream in West …

Confronting The Spectacle Of The Other (Than Human): Posthumanism And The Convergence Of Art, Aesthetics, And Ethics, Matthew Lerberg Jan 2014

Confronting The Spectacle Of The Other (Than Human): Posthumanism And The Convergence Of Art, Aesthetics, And Ethics, Matthew Lerberg

English Dissertations - Archive

This project argues that humans should recognize the intersection of aesthetics and ethics in literature, film, and art that use or represent nonhuman animals. Too often, the right of artists to express their "message" trumps the ethical obligations humans should have to nonhumans. In this scenario, the materiality of nonhumans becomes subjugated to their role as semiotic content--as signs not bodies. Generally, this process of signification ignores the rich entanglements of history, biology, semiotics, materiality, and shared places. Also, this process can lead to negative consequences for nonhuman animals. In order to address these issues I posit a theory of …

A New Multiscale Approach For Dynamic Modeling And Simulation Of Micro-Nano Biomolecular Systems Characterized By A Low Reynolds Number, Mahdi Haghshenas-Jaryani

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In this dissertation, a new multiscale computational framework was developed in order to model and simulate motility of micro-nano-sized objects in fluid environments, characterized with a low Reynolds number. Especially, it has been used for studying the dynamic behavior of biomolecular systems such as motor proteins inside cells.Long simulation run time is one of the most important issues in modeling of cellular and biomolecular systems at the nanoscale due to the multiple time and length scales involved in the dynamics of these systems. These multiscale features are caused by either structure-structure (e.g. flexibility in biological structure or contact) or structure-fluid …

Plasmonic Nanostructures For Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Ruiqian Jiang Jan 2014

Plasmonic Nanostructures For Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Ruiqian Jiang

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In the last three decades, a large number of different plasmonic nanostructures have attracted much attention due to their unique optical properties. Those plasmonic nanostructures include nanoparticles, nanoholes and metal nanovoids. They have been widely utilized in optical devices and sensors. When the plasmonic nanostructures interact with the electromagnetic wave and their surface plasmon frequency match with the light frequency, the electrons in plasmonic nanostructures will resonate with the same oscillation as incident light. In this case, the plasmonic nanostructures can absorb light and enhance the light scattering. Therefore, the plasmonic nanostructures can be used as substrate for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy …

Polymeric Nano/ Microparticles For Management Of Pulmonary Diseases, Jyothi Unnikrishna Menon

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Drug delivery via pulmonary route has emerged as an attractive area of study in the past two decades. This method of administration has multiple advantages for both systemic and local drug delivery due to the availability of a large surface area for drug absorption and higher solute permeability in the lung. Most importantly, inhalational drug delivery provides direct accessibility to the lung via a noninvasive route of administration. Recent literature has shown a surge in the use of nano/micro particles for a wide range of pulmonary applications ranging from targeted and controlled drug delivery to drug screening and tissue regeneration. …

Ultrasound-Modulated Fluorescence Techniques, Yuan Liu Jan 2014

Ultrasound-Modulated Fluorescence Techniques, Yuan Liu

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Ultrasound-modulated fluorescence (UMF) imaging has been proposed as a novel imaging modality by combining ultrasound and optical imaging techniques for early cancer detection. In UMF, a focused ultrasound beam is used to modulate the diffused fluorescence photons in the acoustic focal region, and by specifically analyzing the modulated photons, one can isolate and quantify the fluorescence properties within the ultrasonic focal area. Therefore, UMF is able to provide fluorescence contrast while maintaining ultrasound resolution in tissue. The major challenge of UMF is to extract the weakly modulated fluorescence signal from a bright and unmodulated background, i.e. the low modulation efficiency. …
