VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Four librarians at Virginia Commonwealth University teamed up with faculty in mathematics and biomedical engineering to receive an NIH informationist administrative supplement. The supplement supports a research team developing a mathematical model of ventilator-induced lung inflammation. Our goals are to develop workflow strategies to enhance team communication, provide information and data management services, assist with dissemination of the research results, and assess the impact of the grant. We are currently examining the team’s workflow to find data management and communication gaps and are evaluating tools for group annotation and sharing of articles and references.

Effects Of River Current Inflow On Dissolved Oxygen And Temperature Of Refuge Zones For Cisco In Lake Bemidji, Bryant C. Swenson Jan 2014

Effects Of River Current Inflow On Dissolved Oxygen And Temperature Of Refuge Zones For Cisco In Lake Bemidji, Bryant C. Swenson

Journal of Earth and Life Science

The objectives of this study were to (1) determine if the inflow current from the Mississippi River affects temperature and dissolved oxygen in Lake Bemidji, (2) determine how the amount of suitable cisco Coregonus artedi habitat changes over the summer in Lake Bemidji, and (3) predict how much cisco habitat would be available under a climate warming scenario. Summer fish kill of cisco occurs in most years on Lake Bemidji resulting from low dissolved oxygen in the hypolimnion and high water temperatures in the epilimnion. Dissolved oxygen and temperature profiles provided evidence to suggest the north basin is more suitable …

The Effect Of Barometric Pressure On Feeding Activity Of Yellow Perch, Daniel Vanderweyst Jan 2014

The Effect Of Barometric Pressure On Feeding Activity Of Yellow Perch, Daniel Vanderweyst

Journal of Earth and Life Science

This is the first study to our knowledge that has attempted to relate feeding activity of fish to barometric pressure. This study was conducted with the expectation that a difference in food ingestion would occur in a game fish species at different barometric pressures. The overall objective of this study is to determine if barometric pressure influences the feeding activity of a popular game fish. Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were collected by seine and trap net from Lake Bemidji 12 September through 24 October 2013. The range in size and weight of yellow perch used for this study …

Use Of Cast Nets And Seine Hauls To Estimate Abundance Of Age-0 Yellow Perch, Michael Vaske Jan 2014

Use Of Cast Nets And Seine Hauls To Estimate Abundance Of Age-0 Yellow Perch, Michael Vaske

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Knowledge about fish population dynamics is essential for developing management plans and evaluating management success. In many lakes, yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are the main forage for many upper level predators and recreational fish species. To better manage recreational fisheries, an accurate estimate of prey abundance is necessary. The objectives of the study were to sample the littoral and limnetic zone to better estimate population of age-0 yellow perch, and obtain an estimate of the proportion of yellow perch being missed by traditional littoral seining methods. Littoral seines were conducted at three randomly selected locations in the south …

Flexible Imaging Payload For Real-Time Fluorescent Biological Imaging In Parabolic, Suborbital And Space Analog Environments, Matthew T. Bamsey, Anna-Lisa Paul, Thomas Graham, Robert J. Ferl

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Fluorescent imaging offers the ability to monitor biological functions, in this case biological responses to space-related environments. For plants, fluorescent imaging can include general health indicators such as chlorophyll fluorescence as well as specific metabolic indicators such as engineered fluorescent reporters. This paper describes the Flex Imager a fluorescent imaging payload designed for Middeck Locker deployment and now tested on multiple flight and flight-related platforms. The Flex Imager and associated payload elements have been developed with a focus on ‘flexibility’ allowing for multiple imaging modalities and change-out of individual imaging or control components in the field. The imaging platform is …

Distribution And Habitat Associations Of Juvenile Common Snook In The Lower Rio Grande, Texas, Caleb G. Huber, Timonthy B. Grabowski, Reynaldo Patino, Kevin L. Pope

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Common Snook Centropomus undecimalis were once abundant off the Texas coast, but these populations are now characterized by low abundance and erratic recruitment. Most research concerning Common Snook in North America has been conducted in Florida and very little is known about the specific biology and habitat needs of Common Snook in Texas. The primary objective of this study was to describe the habitat use patterns of juvenile Common Snook and their role in the fish assemblage in the lower portion of the Rio Grande, Texas. Secondarily, we documented the relationship between age and juvenile reproductive development. Fish were collected …

Fitness In Animals Correlates With Proximity To Discontinuities In Body Mass Distributions, David G. Angeler, Craig R. Allen, Anna Vila-Gispert, David Almeida Jan 2014

Fitness In Animals Correlates With Proximity To Discontinuities In Body Mass Distributions, David G. Angeler, Craig R. Allen, Anna Vila-Gispert, David Almeida

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Discontinuous structure in landscapes may cause discontinuous, aggregated species body-mass patterns, reflecting the scales of structure available to animal communities within a landscape. Empirical analyses have shown that the location of species within body mass aggregations, which reflect this scalespecific organization, is non-random with regard to several ecological phenomena, including species extinctions. The propensity of declining species to have body masses proximate to discontinuities suggests that transition zones between scaling regimes ultimately decreases the ecological fitness for some species. We test this proposition using vulnerable and unthreatened fish species in Mediterranean streams with differing levels of human impact. We show …

Reduced Order Unsteady Aerodynamic Modeling For Stability And Control Analysis Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Mehdi Ghoreyshi, Adam Jirasek, Russell M. Cummings

United States Air Force: Publications

Recent advances and challenges in the generation of reduced order aerodynamic models using computational fluid dynamics are presented. The models reviewed are those that can be used for aircraft stability and control analysis and include linear and nonlinear indicial response methods, Volterra theory, radial basis functions, and a surrogate-based recurrence framework. The challenges associated with identification of unknowns for each of the reduced order methods are addressed. A range of test cases, from airfoils to full aircraft, have been used to evaluate and validate the reduced order methods. The motions have different amplitudes and reduced frequencies and could start from …

Fashion Or Proof? A Challenge For Pacific Anthropology, A. Keith Thompson Jan 2014

Fashion Or Proof? A Challenge For Pacific Anthropology, A. Keith Thompson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This article is a call to Pacific anthropologists to write the story of the origin of mankind in the Pacific a bit larger and perhaps to look scientifically for additional explanations. Is it possible that the early diffusionists may have gotten some things right, albeit for the wrong reasons?

The Book With The Unintentionally Self-Referential Title, Brant A. Gardner Jan 2014

The Book With The Unintentionally Self-Referential Title, Brant A. Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Earl M. Wunderli has written a book that works through the reasons he fell out of belief in the Book of Mormon. These are combined with issues that he has added to his original reasons. His presentation is clearly intended to suggest that what he found compelling will also be compelling to other readers. Should it? This review looks at how his arguments are constructed: his methodology, the logic of the analysis, and the way he uses his sources. Although he argues that it is the Book of Mormon that is the imperfect book, his construction of the arguments makes …

Is Decrypting The Genetic Legacy Of America’S Indigenous Populations Key To The Historicity Of The Book Of Mormon?, Ugo A. Perego, Jayne E. Ekins Jan 2014

Is Decrypting The Genetic Legacy Of America’S Indigenous Populations Key To The Historicity Of The Book Of Mormon?, Ugo A. Perego, Jayne E. Ekins

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon claims to be an ancient record containing a summary of a now-disappeared civilization that once lived in the American continent but originated in the Middle East. DNA studies focusing on the ancient migration of world populations support a North-East Asian origin of modern Native American populations arriving through the now-submerged land bridge that once connected Siberia to Alaska during the last Ice Age, approximately 15,000 years ago. The apparent discrepancy between the Book of Mormon narrative and the published genetic data must be addressed in lieu of generally accepted population genetic principles that are efficient in …

Differential Expression Of The Nuclear-Encoded Mitochondrial Transcriptome In Pediatric Septic Shock., Scott L Weiss, Natalie Z Cvijanovich, Geoffrey L Allen, Neal J Thomas, Robert J. Freishtat, Nick Anas, +11 Additional Authors

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence supports a role for mitochondrial dysfunction in organ injury and immune dysregulation in sepsis. Although differential expression of mitochondrial genes in blood cells has been reported for several diseases in which bioenergetic failure is a postulated mechanism, there are no data about the blood cell mitochondrial transcriptome in pediatric sepsis.

METHODS: We conducted a focused analysis using a multicenter genome-wide expression database of 180 children ≤ 10 years of age with septic shock and 53 healthy controls. Using total RNA isolated from whole blood within 24 hours of PICU admission for septic shock, we evaluated 296 nuclear-encoded …

Review Of Hyperuricemia As New Marker For Metabolic Syndrome, Laura Billiet, Sarah Doaty, James D. Katz, Manuel T. Velasquez Jan 2014

Review Of Hyperuricemia As New Marker For Metabolic Syndrome, Laura Billiet, Sarah Doaty, James D. Katz, Manuel T. Velasquez

Global Health Faculty Publications

Hyperuricemia has long been established as the major etiologic factor in gout. In recent years, a large body of evidence has accumulated that suggests that hyperuricemia may play a role in the development and pathogenesis of a number of metabolic, hemodynamic, and systemic pathologic diseases, including metabolic syndrome, hypertension, stroke, and atherosclerosis. A number of epidemiologic studies have linked hyperuricemia with each of these disorders. In some studies, therapies that lower uric acid may prevent or improve certain components of the metabolic syndrome. There is an association between uric acid and the development of systemic lupus erythematosus; the connection between …

Using A Theory Of Change Approach To Analyze Global Health Diplomacy Practice In Myanmar, Sangeeta Mookherji, Holly Greb, Rebecca Katz Jan 2014

Using A Theory Of Change Approach To Analyze Global Health Diplomacy Practice In Myanmar, Sangeeta Mookherji, Holly Greb, Rebecca Katz

Global Health Faculty Publications

The current picture of global health diplomacy (GHD) is one of increasing complexity, with multiple actors striving for multiple objectives, using a multitude of strategies and activities. Analysis and documentation of GHD practice is urgently needed to help identify the opportunities GHD provides for jointly improving global health and international relations, as well as possible unintended consequences. Systematic analysis of GHD practice is challenging without a conceptual framework. We identified a Theory of Change approach as one way to conceptualize GHD practice and potential impacts that could also depict its complexity and identify relationships and pathways for measuring success. We …

Teacher Education That Works: Preparing Secondary-Level Math And Science Teachers For Success With English Language Learners Through Content-Based Instruction, Margo Dellicarpini, Orlando B. Alonso Jan 2014

Teacher Education That Works: Preparing Secondary-Level Math And Science Teachers For Success With English Language Learners Through Content-Based Instruction, Margo Dellicarpini, Orlando B. Alonso

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Little research exists on effective ways to prepare secondary mathematics and science teachers to work with English language learners (ELLs) in mainstream mathematics and science (subsequently referred to as STEM) classrooms. Given the achievement gap that exists between ELLs and their native-speaking counterparts in STEM subjects, as well as the growing numbers of ELLs in US schools, this becomes a critical issue, as academic success for these students depends on the effectiveness of instruction they receive not only in English as a second language classes (ESL), but in mainstream classrooms as well. This article reports on the effects of a …

Forgiveness And Power In The Age Of Atrocity: Servant-Leadership As A Way Of Life: A Review, Chadron Hazelbaker Jan 2014

Forgiveness And Power In The Age Of Atrocity: Servant-Leadership As A Way Of Life: A Review, Chadron Hazelbaker

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert Greenleaf pioneered the concept of servant-leadership in his work Servant-Leadership in 1970. Since then, various essays, studies, and books have explored different aspects of Greenleaf's ideas. Larry Spears, building on Greenleaf's work, presented his well-known and often used ten characteristics of servant-leadership. Throughout the refinement of the articulation of servant-leadership, difficult questions addressing how servants lead in situations of violence, coercive power, and aggression have arisen. In the book Forgiveness and Power in the Age ofAtrocity: Servant-Leadership as a Way of Life (published by the scholarly press Rowman & Littlefield/Lexington in 2012), Shann Ray Ferch addresses these questions utilizing …

Got A Better Idea?: Promoting Greenhouse Gas Regulations Through Solution-Based Informal Rulemaking, Lorraine J. Baer Jan 2014

Got A Better Idea?: Promoting Greenhouse Gas Regulations Through Solution-Based Informal Rulemaking, Lorraine J. Baer

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

In September 2013, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rule regulating greenhouse gas emissions from newly constructed, coal-fired power plants. Coal industry lawyers immediately began preparing for litigation. Like many industry-led arbitrary and capricious challenges, their goal is to stop the regulations from moving forward. This Note analyzes the new rule, concluding that although the EPA's rule is legally sound, it does have some potential weaknesses. Rather than merely blocking the regulations through litigation, however, this Note proposes that interest groups should instead submit their own solutions during the notice-and-comment rulemaking process, which would reduce regulatory gridlock and …

Scientific Research, Technological Innovation And The Agenda Of Social Justice, Democratic Participation And Sustainability, Hugh Lacey Jan 2014

Scientific Research, Technological Innovation And The Agenda Of Social Justice, Democratic Participation And Sustainability, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Modern science, whose methodologies give special privilege to using decontextualizing strategies and downplay the role of context-sensitive strategies, have been extraordinarily successful in producing knowledge whose applications have transformed the shape of the lifeworld. Nevertheless, I argue that how the mainstream of the modern scientific tradition interprets the nature and objectives of science is incoherent; and that today there are two competing interpretations of scientific activities that are coherent and that maintain continuity with the success of the tradition: "commercially-oriented technoscience" (CT) and "multi-strategy research" (MS). The greater part of this article is devoted to discussing what is involved in …
