Rules Of Disengagement: "Low Skill" Migrant Workers, Law And The Social Dimensions Of Exclusionary Inclusion, Brendan Breckman Jowett
Rules Of Disengagement: "Low Skill" Migrant Workers, Law And The Social Dimensions Of Exclusionary Inclusion, Brendan Breckman Jowett
LLM Theses
This thesis interrogates social exclusion among migrant workers under the NOC C & D (“low skill”) occupational stream of Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program, a relatively new, fast-growing, and highly diverse stream which brings migrant workers into industry sectors and social settings where they were never seen before. The author develops a framework for understanding law’s role in producing social exclusion, and applies it to ethnographic data collected through interviews with migrant justice advocates and migrant workers in Brandon, Manitoba. This thesis ultimately establishes that migrant workers need not face spatial separation, discrimination from the community, or a historically gendered …
Romantic Relationships In The Context Of Parenting Children With Autism, Amber A. Thompson
Romantic Relationships In The Context Of Parenting Children With Autism, Amber A. Thompson
Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences
This study examines the impact of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder on relationship quality using the double ABCX model of adjustment and adaptation. Respondents (N = 126) recruited through Autism Society listervs completed online surveys designed to measure three factors of relationship quality: satisfaction, positive perceptions, and negative perceptions. Results from hierarchical multiple regression models indicate that the double ABCX model accounted for 47% of variance in satisfaction, 72% in positive perceptions, and 50% in negative perceptions, for predicting the quality of couple relationships. Implications for clinicians working with couples are discussed, such as the need …
Phenotypic And Genotypic Analysis Of A U.S. Native Fine-Leaved Festuca Population Reveals Its Potential Use For Low-Input Urban Landscapes, Jack E. Staub, Matthew D. Robbins, Yingmei Ma, Paul Johnson
Phenotypic And Genotypic Analysis Of A U.S. Native Fine-Leaved Festuca Population Reveals Its Potential Use For Low-Input Urban Landscapes, Jack E. Staub, Matthew D. Robbins, Yingmei Ma, Paul Johnson
CWEL Publications
Continued reduction in limited natural resources worldwide increasingly necessitates the incorporation of low-maintenance and low-input plant materials into urban landscapes. Some fine-leaved Festuca grass species have been used in formal gardens and native urban landscapes because of their inherent tolerance to abiotic stresses, but native, ornamental types (tall and non-spreading with multicolored culms and panicles) are not common in landscapes of the western United States. A native fine-leaved Festuca collection made in Montana (designated FEID 9025897) by the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Services possesses such ornamental characteristics but has not been evaluated for its horticultural potential. Therefore, a study was …

Countless marine species are invading new environments with devastating effects on the ecosystem, the local and global economy, and on human health. The frequency of marine invasions has been increasing in recent decades with a respective raised interest of invasive species in the scientific community, and the general public. The Aquatic Invasive Species class (MAR442) at the University of New England offers an informative overview of invasive species, targeting educated readers with a general interest in invasive species biology. Students in the MAR 442 class have worked on identifying the most important topics on marine invasive species, have reviewed the …
Cycle Lengths Of Θ-Biased Random Permutations, Tongjia Shi
Cycle Lengths Of Θ-Biased Random Permutations, Tongjia Shi
HMC Senior Theses
Consider a probability distribution on the permutations of n elements. If the probability of each permutation is proportional to θK, where K is the number of cycles in the permutation, then we say that the distribution generates a θ-biased random permutation. A random permutation is a special θ-biased random permutation with θ = 1. The mth moment of the rth longest cycle of a random permutation is Θ(nm), regardless of r and θ. The joint moments are derived, and it is shown that the longest cycles of a permutation can either be positively or …

An Unusual Occurrence Of Arthrophycus Alleghaniensis(?) On The Shawangunk Ridge, Lower Mid-Hudson Valley, New York, Howard R. Feldman, Alexander Bartholomew, Beryl Kahn
Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research
The Shawangunk Formation is a medial Silurian conglomerate that crops out from near Rosendale, south through Wurtsboro, New York, High Point State Park and the Delaware Water Gap in New Jersey, and at Lehigh Gap, Pennsylvania after which it continues into Maryland and Virginia. The formation overall is interpreted to primarily represent a braided stream environment with flowage from mountains to the east that arose during the Taconic Orogeny into a basin toward the west. The trace fossil Arthrophycus was found in the upper-middle part of the formation on the Shawangunk Ridge at Mohonk, near New Paltz, New York. Arthrophycus …
Native American Oral Traditional Evidence In American Courts: Reliable Evidence Or Useless Myth?, Rachel Awan
Native American Oral Traditional Evidence In American Courts: Reliable Evidence Or Useless Myth?, Rachel Awan
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
American history is rife with conflict between Native American cultures and the Anglo-American legal system. When Native American groups bring claims in federal court, they face a host of biases that fail to consider their distinctive cultural background. One such bias concerns the use of oral traditional evidence as testimony at trial. Because Native American groups were largely non-literate prior to European contact, Native Americans often use oral traditional evidence as testimony if the matter requires evidence extending centuries into the past. Unfortunately, the law regarding Native Americans' use of oral traditional evidence as testimony has been particularly problematic because …

Knotted And Linked Products Of Recombination On T(2,N)#T(2,M) Substrates, Erica Flapan, Jeremy Grevet, Qi Li, Chen Daisy Sun, Helen Wong
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
We develop a topological model of site-specific recombination that applies to substrates which are the connected sum of two torus links of the form T(2,n)#T(2,m). Then we use our model to prove that all knots and links that can be produced by site-specific recombination on such substrates are contained in one of two families, which we illustrate.

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications
Morquio A syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis IVA) is an autosomal recessive disorder that results from deficient activity of the enzyme N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase (GALNS) due to alterations in the GALNS gene, which causes major skeletal and connective tissue abnormalities and effects on multiple organ systems. The GALNS alterations associated with Morquio A are numerous and heterogeneous, and new alterations are continuously identified. To aid detection and interpretation of GALNS alterations, from previously published research, we provide a comprehensive and up-to-date listing of 277 unique GALNS alterations associated with Morquio A identified from 1,091 published GALNS alleles. In agreement with previous findings, most reported GALNS …

Differences Between Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders: Rural Social Work Implications For Prevention, Assessment And Treatment, Susan M. Ryan, George S. Leibowitz, Jeanne M. Nauheimer, Paul Force-Emery Mackie
Social Work Department Publications
This literature review examined nine quantitative research studies published between 1992-2013 that compared children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to identify: (a) the differences between these children (e.g., intellectual, behavioral); and (b) the diagnostic tools that may be used to distinguish between them, thereby providing a differential diagnosis. Special focus was placed on rural treatment implications. These studies revealed differences between the intellectual, executive functioning, adaptive behavior, motor, and behavioral skills of children with FASD and ADHD. This review identified neurodevelopmental assessments used in these nine research studies that appear to support learning …

An Anatomical, Biochemical, Biophysical And Quantum Basis For The Unconscious Mind, James L. Oschman, Maurie D. Pressman
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This article suggests that it may now be possible to develop some theoretical and experimental bases for organic substructures involved in psychological phenomena including the unconscious. Our inquiry arose from mutual interest in the mechanisms involved in peak athletic and artistic performances and in deep therapeutic encounters. We are referring to a state of consciousness is often described by performers as “the zone.” This is a state in which individuals or groups function at an extraordinary level of perception and coordination; or a state in which therapists develop a deep connection with their clients’ repressed feelings or traumatic memories. Here …
The Seasons Of Wellbeing As An Evolutionary Map For Transpersonal Medicine, Donald M. Epstein, Simon A. Senzon, Dan Lemberger
The Seasons Of Wellbeing As An Evolutionary Map For Transpersonal Medicine, Donald M. Epstein, Simon A. Senzon, Dan Lemberger
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The four Seasons of Wellbeing (Discover, Transform, Awaken, and Integrate) refer to distinct rhythms, periods, and factors that influence the accessibility of an individual’s resources during the journey of life. Each season is explicitly and implicitly related to an individual’s experience, focus, and capacity for self-organizational states. Each can be used to understand, organize, and foster behavior change, positive growth, transformation, and human development. A genealogy of the seasons is described, emphasizing the empirical and theoretical foundations of Reorganizational Healing and its roots in models such as Grof ’s Systems of Condensed Experiences (or COEX Systems) and Wilber’s Integral Theory …
A Possible Mechanism Of Action For The Placebo Response: Human Biofield Activation Via Therapeutic Ritual, Marie G. Brook, Randy Fauver
A Possible Mechanism Of Action For The Placebo Response: Human Biofield Activation Via Therapeutic Ritual, Marie G. Brook, Randy Fauver
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The lack of an identified mechanism of action for the placebo response contributes to its perception as clinically unimportant in Western medicine and minimizes its value as a contributing factor to the effectiveness of both conventional and alternative medical treatments. The therapeutic ritual is one of the principle contributors to the placebo response. Two key elements predicting salutogenic outcomes in both the placebo response and therapeutic ritual are patient meaning making and the patient/healer relationship. A detailed examination of human biofield dynamics shows its role in storing, communicating, and regulating the flow of information associated with healing in Western and …
Ayurvedic Psychology: Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science, Daniel Rhoda
Ayurvedic Psychology: Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science, Daniel Rhoda
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Ayurveda is a holistic medical system based on ancient Indian texts that utilizes natural treatments, botanical medicines, and lifestyle and dietary practices to promote healing of the body, mind, senses, and spirit. Interest in Ayurveda has grown in the United States over the last two decades, as consumers, therapists, scientists, and health regulators have recognized its holistic and preventative benefits. According to Ayurveda, every human being is composed of a unique proportion of these elemental energies, a foundational theory in Ayurveda known as tridosha. The three doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) represent three psychobiological constitutional types that govern …

Structural Dynamics Of A Single-Stranded Rna–Helix Junction Using Nmr, Catherine D. Eichhorn, Hashim M. Al-Hashimi
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Many regulatory RNAs contain long single strands (ssRNA) that adjoin secondary structural elements. Here, we use NMR spectroscopy to study the dynamic properties of a 12-nucleotide (nt) ssRNA tail derived from the prequeuosine riboswitch linked to the 3′ end of a 48-nt hairpin. Analysis of chemical shifts, NOE connectivity, 13C spin relaxation, and residual dipolar coupling data suggests that the first two residues (A25 and U26) in the ssRNA tail stack onto the adjacent helix and assume an ordered conformation. The following U26-A27 step marks the beginning of an A6-tract and forms an acute pivot point for …

Planetary Heat Sink Uncouples Temperature Increase From Rising Co2: Climate Change Hiatus Explained, Monica Houweling, Megan Gavitt, Jean Kim
Featured Research
The current hiatus in terms of global climate change has been linked to a greater phenomenon of a change in climate than seen in previous historical trends. The globe was rising in temperature throughout the beginning of the 21st century, but has entered into a hiatus, a period where the CO2 levels continue to rise but the global temperature is remaining constant. It is predicted that temperatures will continue to rise once this hiatus passes. The main cause of this hiatus, known as planetary heat sink, is the concept that the ocean is absorbing more heat to offset the increasing …
